Let it snow!

As fall moves into winter we begin to see those beautiful white flakes falling gently from the sky. They come down coating tree branches and suddenly fall to the ground creating a wonderful world of white. They turn the area into a magical winter wonderland.

Winter certainly is the most wonderful time of the year when fresh snow covers the ground. There are so many fun outdoor activities, most of which can be enjoyed by the entire family to get you out of the house and ready to enjoy winter at its best.

“Winter activities don’t have to be elaborate or expensive to provide a great opportunity for the whole family to enjoy. Put all that fresh snow to good use, bundle up, get active and discover the great outdoors,” said Wendy Kummerer, Director of Marketing and Communications McHenry County Conservation District. “And don’t forget to bring a thermos of hot chocolate to enjoy when you are finished with your activity.”

Some winter activities require very little extra equipment. Start with heading outside with children in tow and begin to build a snowman in the front yard.

Kids who enjoy the Frosty the Snowman shows will be excited to have their own Frosty. When finished enjoy a cup of hot chocolate topped with a marshmallow.

Build a snow fort and have a snowball fight if the snow is not so icy that the snowballs could hurt someone. Getting the kids out of the house and away from the electronic games and participating in physical activities is both fun and healthy, not only for the children but also for the adults.

Ways to get out and enjoy winter

Sledding Many of us remember sledding as children. Grabbing our sled and heading to the nearest hill to slide down. Sometimes they were just small hills in your own or your neighbor’s back yard, while other times a trip to the local park or forest preserve added to the height and fun of a swift ride down the slope. Family activities such as these will make memories.

Snowshoeing Looking for something a little more active? Snowshoeing is becoming more popular in this area.

Originally found in the far north regions of the U.S., Canada, and the Scandinavian countries, who are known for their deep snow, snowshoeing came to the Midwest with the arrival of the Norwegian immigrants. Snowshoeing, along with cross country skiing, were the main means of traveling in the winter when snow covered all in this arctic region.

Snowshoeing requires a pair of snowshoes and a pair of poles to guide you on your way. They traditionally have a hard wood frame with rawhide lacings.

When attached to your boots they allow for distribution of your body weight over a bigger surface, thus allowing you not to sink all the way into the snow.

Both adults and children will enjoy the feeling of walking on the snow rather than in the snow. Snowshoeing is considered a way to hike. When there is 5 inches or more of snow on the ground, snowshoes can be rented at the Lost Valley Visitors Center, Glacial Park. They have both adult and children’s sizes.

The Too Good For program is a more modern version of Dare. Instead of dealing with drugs only, the Too Good For program incorporates many real-life social perspectives designed to help children prepare themselves for reallife situations. Too Good For focuses on helping kids be better people.

Some of the topics the children learn are respect for themselves and others, how to say no, how to pick friends and approaches how to prevent bullying. Defendant pleads guilty to assault of a minor Patrick D. Kenneally, McHenry County state’s attorney, announced on Dec. 23 that 37-year-old Lorentino MartinezTejeda, formerly of McHenry, was sentenced to eight years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for the offense of Predatory Criminal Sexual Assault of a Child, by the Honorable Judge Robert Wilbrandt on Dec. 20, 2019. The defendant will be required to be followed by a three-year to natural life period of mandatory supervised release.

Martinez-Tejeda pled guilty to sexually

assaulting a minor victim who was under 13 years old from November 2017 to August 2018. He must serve his sentence at 85 percent with no day-forday credit. Upon release from custody, MartinezTejeda will have to register as a lifetime sex offender and be subject to a three year to natural life period of mandatory supervised release.

This case was investigated by Sgt. Clesen and Det. Kinney of the McHenry Police Department. The case was prosecuted by Assistant State’s Attorney Sharyl Eisenstein.

Let it snow!

As fall moves into winter we begin to see those beautiful white flakes falling gently from the sky. They come down coating tree branches and suddenly fall to the ground creating a wonderful world of white. They turn the area into a magical winter wonderland.

Winter certainly is the most wonderful time of the year when fresh snow covers the ground. There are so many fun outdoor activities, most of which can be enjoyed by the entire family to get you out of the house and ready to enjoy winter at its best.

“Winter activities don’t have to be elaborate or expensive to provide a great opportunity for the whole family to enjoy. Put all that fresh snow to good use, bundle up, get active and discover the great outdoors,” said Wendy Kummerer, Director of Marketing and Communications McHenry County Conservation District. “And don’t forget to bring a thermos of hot chocolate to enjoy when you are finished with your activity.”

Some winter activities require very little extra equipment. Start with heading outside with children in tow and begin to build a snowman in the front yard.

Kids who enjoy the Frosty the Snowman shows will be excited to have their own Frosty. When finished enjoy a cup of hot chocolate topped with a marshmallow.

Build a snow fort and have a snowball fight if the snow is not so icy that the snowballs could hurt someone. Getting the kids out of the house and away from the electronic games and participating in physical activities is both fun and healthy, not only for the children but also for the adults.

Ways to get out and enjoy winter

Sledding Many of us remember sledding as children. Grabbing our sled and heading to the nearest hill to slide down. Sometimes they were just small hills in your own or your neighbor’s back yard, while other times a trip to the local park or forest preserve added to the height and fun of a swift ride down the slope. Family activities such as these will make memories.

Snowshoeing Looking for something a little more active? Snowshoeing is becoming more popular in this area.

Originally found in the far north regions of the U.S., Canada, and the Scandinavian countries, who are known for their deep snow, snowshoeing came to the Midwest with the arrival of the Norwegian immigrants. Snowshoeing, along with cross country skiing, were the main means of traveling in the winter when snow covered all in this arctic region.

Snowshoeing requires a pair of snowshoes and a pair of poles to guide you on your way. They traditionally have a hard wood frame with rawhide lacings.

When attached to your boots they allow for distribution of your body weight over a bigger surface, thus allowing you not to sink all the way into the snow.

Both adults and children will enjoy the feeling of walking on the snow rather than in the snow. Snowshoeing is considered a way to hike. When there is 5 inches or more of snow on the ground, snowshoes can be rented at the Lost Valley Visitors Center, Glacial Park. They have both adult and children’s sizes.

Cross country skiing Cross country skiing is to me the best outdoor activity in the wintertime. Dress in layers, pick up your cross country skis and head for the trails.

Both the McHenry County Conservation District and the Lake County Forest Preserves have a variety of trails to accommodate skiers from beginners to advanced.

Cross country skiing can be enjoyed by yourself or with friends or family. Being out on the trail alone, with the snow glistening in the winter sunlight is a peaceful experience.

The silence of the woods is enjoyable with only the sounds of the skis swishing along the trail and sometimes the sound of a bird in the distance.

When skiing with the family, the laughs and giggles of the children will make it a special experience.

One way to enjoy cross country skiing is to join in McHenry County Conservation District’s Candlelight Ski/hike.

Each month there is a special candlelight ski on Friday and Saturday from 5 to 9 p.m. If there is not 4 inches of snow, enjoy a candlelit hike instead.

After your ski/hike sit around the campfire and enjoy some hot refreshments while experiencing the allure of the winter woods.

Ice fishing Are you a fisherman? Do you restrict your fishing to summer or do you join the many ice fishermen that can be found on the chain of lakes, when the measurable ice is 4 inches thick?

Ice fishing is another winter activity that can be enjoyed alone or with family or friends.

As the ice continues to thicken, groups of small huts appear on the lakes. Fishermen with their augers, drill a hole in the ice to lower their

fishing lines.

Some groups can be seen on the lake with their grills, much like tailgating at a football game. They bring hamburgers or brats or they grill the fish they catch.

Walk carefully on the ice watching for fishing holes that have been cut out that are easily stumbled into.

Snowmobiling Just as boats cover the Chain O’Lakes in the summer, when the ice on the lakes is more than 5 inches thick the sight and sound of snowmobiles racing across the chain of lakes takes on a life of their own.

If the winter is cold enough to sustain the thickness of the ice, snowmobile activities on the lakes will continue through the winter.

Because the snowmobile trails and the horse trail overlap in the forest preserves, they are weather dependent on opening.

The horse trails close when they become icy for the safety of the horses according to Wendy Kummerer.

“When the trails are right for snowmobiling that is 4 to 6 inches of snow on frozen ground and it is after December 10th the horse trails close for horses,” Kummerer said.

“But if we have a mild winter and the snow melts and there is no snow prediction, the trails open again for horses and close for the snowmobiles.”

So it is necessary to check for conditions on a daily basis.

hen Tracy Beck was looking to adopt a rescue dog a few years back, she had a vision of what she wanted.

“I had lost another rescue dog and was looking to replace it,” she recalled. “We saw Amber at a rescue in Huntley, Illinois, but I was looking for a bigger dog for the farm. But my husband really liked the look of her, so we went to check her out.”

The couple drove down to Illinois from their Elkhorn, Wisconsin farm to meet Amber.

“I wasn’t sure,” Beck said. “She was way too small and I wanted a big farm dog. But he was adamant on her and said a dog didn’t need to be big to bark if something was wrong on the farm, which was what we wanted.”

So, they brought Amber home.

“And, boy, did she have a lot of energy,” Beck said. “I mean a lot.

She was rearranging the furniture all over the house!”

Beck said she knew they were going to have to find a way to harness that energy, and a friend told her the dog needed a job.

“She needed something to drain her mind and her body,” Beck said.

“You could run her all day, but she needed mental stimulation as well.”

Beck’s friend suggested agility training and she figured it was worth a try and signed up for a class.

“She just loved it and caught on really fast,” she said. “I started to like it, too.”

Teen arrested in ‘Swatting’ incident

and checked the specific apartment, but again, there were no signs of anyone in distress.

At approximately 5:45PM, the Lake County Sheriff’s Emergency Communications Center received another 911 call, this time the caller said they were about to be shot. The caller then hung up and again shut off their phone.

Through advanced software, sheriff’s telecommunicators were able to pinpoint the exact apartment number the caller was calling from, which was different than the initially reported apartment.

When sheriff’s deputies entered the apartment that telecommunicators determined was the origin of the calls, they found a 16-year-old male. The 16-year-old admitted to making prank telephone calls to 911. He was arrested and is being petitioned to the juvenile court system on two counts of false reporting to 911 (class 4 felonies).

All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.

Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested a 16-yearold male of unincorporated Grayslake after calling 911 to report a fake crime in progress, known as “swatting.”

On January 8, 2020, at approximately 2:20PM, Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies initially responded to a 911 hang-up call at an apartment complex in the 33600 block of North Royal Oak Lane, unincorporated Grayslake. The call was made by a cellular phone, and the caller shut the phone off immediately after calling. Sheriff’s Deputies checked numerous apartments and there was no indication of anyone needing any help.

At approximately 4:30PM, another cellular 911 call was received by the Lake County Sheriff’s Emergency Communications Center. This time, a caller indicated they were being held against their will, were injured, and observed a firearm. The caller provided an apartment number, hung up, and shut off their phone. Sheriff’s Deputies responded back

2020 brings a higher minimum wage, legalization of marijuana Hundreds of state laws took effect this month

The state’s minimum wage increased by $1 hourly, recreational marijuana has gone on sale to those over 21 years of age and some state taxes and licensing fees increased when the calendar hit January.

The changes are among hundreds resulting from laws passed during a busy legislative session which adjourned in early June.

Minimum wage: The minimum wage will increase by $1 to $9.25 hourly on Jan. 1, the first such increase since 2010. The wage will increase to $10 hourly in July before increasing $1 each January until it hits $15 by 2025.

Marijuana legalization: With the legalization of adult-use marijuana in the state, Illi-

nois residents will be allowed to possess 30 grams of cannabis flower, 500 milligrams of a marijuana-infused product and five grams of cannabis concentrate. Non-residents can possess half those amounts.

Consumption of marijuana will still be banned in public places, however, unless a licensed marijuana facility or certain lounges obtain local government clearance for allowing use at their facilities.

Marijuana legalization will also provide for the expungement of low-level cannabis convictions and criminal records in the state, the first of which were filed in Chicago this month.

New taxes, fees for Capital Plan: Some new taxes and fees which will help fund a multi-year $45 billion capital infrastructure plan will also take effect starting in January.

Registration fees for passenger vehicles will increase

to $151 from $101, while electric vehicle registration fees will increase to $251 annually from $34 every other year.

The licensing fee for a trailer weighing less than 3,000 pounds will increase to $118 from $18, with every weight class above that also seeing a $100 increase.

A new tax on parking garages will also take effect next month, with a 6 percent rate applied to hourly and daily garages and a 9 percent rate applied to monthly.

The state will also begin taxing the value of traded-in vehicles starting after $10,000 of value, down from $20,000.

Other new laws • The maximum fine for a hitting a construction worker with a vehicle will increase to $25,000 from $10,000.

• Those violating “Scott’s Law” by failing to reduce speed or change lanes when an emergency vehicle is

stopped on the side of the road will see increased fines in the new year as well. The minimum fine for a first offense will increase to $250 from $100, while the minimum for a second offense will be $750.

Money collected from such violations will go to a Scott’s Law Fund to produce driver education materials.

The maximum fine will remain at $10,000. The law also increases the severity of violations that result in the death or harm to a first responder to a class 2 felony.

• Passing a stopped school bus that has its “STOP” arm extended will now result in a $300 fine, up from $150 for the first offense. The second offense will cost drivers $1,000, up from $500.

• Public locations must convert single-occupancy restrooms into all-gender restrooms and designate them for use by no more than one person at a time, or for fami-

lies or assisted use. Public locations must change exterior signage as well.

• Public buildings will be required to have baby changing facilities in any of their public restrooms.

• The burial benefit for a firefighter, state police or local law enforcement officer killed in the line of duty will increase to $20,000 from $10,000.

• The Illinois secretary of state will be required to allow applicants to choose between “male,” “female” or “nonbinary” when designating the applicant’s sex on their driver’s license or ID card.

• Any report received by the Department of Children and Family Services alleging the abuse or neglect of a child by a person who is not the child’s parent or immediate family must immediately be referred to the appropriate local enforcement agency and state’s attorney for consideration of criminal inves-

tigation or other action.

• Diesel trucks will be prohibited from idling for more than 10 minutes within one hour if the vehicle is within 200 feet of a residential area.

• Graduate assistants will no longer be classified as “students,” but rather as “employees,” which grants them the right to collectively bargain.

• Insurers in the state will be required to cover the costs of medically necessary epinephrine injectors, commonly referred to by the brand name EpiPen, for persons under 18 years old.

• Hospitals must post information on how to enroll in health insurance through the Illinois health insurance marketplace.

Slices of life

Sweet Saturdays should be unencumbered Monday morning comes along almost every seven days or so and the workweek looms ahead. Five. Long.

Days.

Standing at the end, however, is Saturday. Sweet, unencumbered, unscheduled Saturday. A day to sleep in.

A day of freedom.

On Monday morning, I think about the evening and the chores I will accomplish.

I will get things done that can’t get done during the workday. Errands. Home repairs. A need to clean the fridge. My list is long, but I figure I can knock a project or two out of the park.

Saturday seems like a great big expanse of time – 24 whole and long hours – when it is three or four days away. I can get so very, very much done on Saturday. No need to worry about procrastination on the weekdays. Sweet unencumbered Saturday can conquer anything.

By Friday I am feeling the heat. I realize I have stacked activity and chore and task one on top of the other in anticipation of Sweet Saturday, and there is no way, no how I will be able to get all the tasks on my to-do list checked off

as done. I realize sleeping in may be a dream because my Saturday is no longer unencumbered.

Sigh.

So on Friday I kick it into top gear. I attempt to dive into the tasks I’ve been putting off all week so that Saturday can remain sweet.

I launder. I make muffins out of the brown bananas so they don’t go to waste. I vacuum and make a partial attempt at cleaning out the junk drawer. I even make dinner.

By the end of the day (evening) I am exhausted.

It’s been a week.

And then Saturday rolls around. Sweet Saturday. I still have a lengthy to-do

list, but I decide to sleep in anyway. Besides, who’s going to see my dirty fridge?

And junk drawers are so named for a reason.

Saturdays are meant to be Saturdays. Encumbering them with anything other than an empty to-do list is more bitter than sweet, and I’ll take sweet any day of the week, but especially on Saturday.

Jones was transferred on Nov. 24 from the county jail in Dubuque, Iowa, to the county jail in Walworth County, Wisc., due to the home invasion charges stemming from the Lake Geneva incident. Jones then posted bond in Walworth County on Nov. 25, but was taken into custody by Waukegan detectives immediately after he was driven back to Waukegan. He was charged with the Sept. 13 residential burglary of the Cook home, and ordered held in Lake County Jail on $500,000 bail.

Waukegan detectives and investigators from the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office were informed on Dec. 23 that DNA evidence placed Jones in contact with the victim. The Lake County Coroner’s Office then changed the victim’s death to homicide on Jan. 7.

On Jan. 7, the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved charges of first degree murder for Jones. Jones appeared in bond court early Wednesday, Jan. 8, where he was ordered held on $2 million bail.

Assistant Lake County State’s Attorney Russell Caskey said in bond court that DNA test results showed Jones’s blood was found on Cook’s face and Jones’s

DNA was discovered under the fingernails on both of the victim’s hands.

Jones is due back in court on Jan. 29 for a preliminary hearing.

burglaries, was transported to the Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division and sheriff’s detectives obtained a search warrant for Grabowski’s residence. While conducting the search warrant, sheriff’s detectives located over 100 items stolen during vehicle burglaries in Lake, McHenry, and Cook counties.

The property of several victims who previously filed reports with their respective sheriff’s office/police departments was recovered at Grabowski’s residence.

The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved the charges of two counts of burglary (one class 2 and one class 3 felony). Additional charges are pending.

Grabowski remains held in the Lake County Jail pending an initial court hearing.

Sheriff John Idleburg said, “Breaking into someone’s home or vehicle and stealing their hard-earned property is despicable and a complete violation of their privacy. I am happy our detectives recovered a significant amount of property and they will eventually be able to reunite the valuables with their owners.”

All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.

Police reports Lake County man charged with firstdegree murder

A Waukegan man has been charged with one count of first degree m u r d e r for killing Chad B. Jones an elderly Waukegan woman in her home in September, 2019.

Chad B. Jones, 41, of the 2500 block of Garrick Avenue in Waukegan, was ordered held in Lake County jail on $2 million bail during a bond hearing early Wednesday by Lake County Associate Judge Paul D. Novak.

The three month old case ends a significant investigation that resulted in charges in three different states.

Officers from the Waukegan Police Department responded to a single family residence in the 2700 block of Evergreen Road on Sept. 15 at the request of the family of Ms. Marlyn Cook, 74. The Cook family had located the victim deceased inside the residence.

Officers located the victim and signs of forced entry. Waukegan Police were also informed by family

members she was last seen alive on Sept. 12.

Based on that information, the Waukegan Police Department Major Crime Unit was activated to process the scene for possible foul play, and the Criminal Investigations Division (CID) responded to conduct the investigation.

Detectives determined during the course of the investigation that Jones and his vehicle was in the area on Sept. 13.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office conducted an autopsy on the victim on Sept.

16 and classified the death as undetermined, pending further lab results.

On Sept. 18, Jones was arrested by police in Lake Geneva, Wis., for a home invasion. Jones was taken into custody after he attempted to flee from officers during that incident. Jones arrived to that home invasion in his silver 1997 Mercury Grand Marquis. This arrest was posted on the Lake Geneva Wisconsin Police Facebook page.

A Cook’s family member was contacted by a friend and told about the Jones arrest on Sept. 19. That family member contacted detectives with the Waukegan CID who were assigned to the case. The family member said Jones was a former neighbor of the Cook family, lived on an ad-

jacent street, and had moved from the area approximately one year earlier. The family member also remembered Jones drove a silver Mercury Grand Marquis.

Waukegan detectives went to Walworth County Jail on Sept. 20 in an attempt to speak with Jones.

On Sept. 21, Jones posted $10,000 cash bond and was released from Walworth County jail. Jones returned to Waukegan, then drove to Dubuque, Iowa, where he was again taken into custody for fleeing from a traffic stop. Jones was taken to the Dubuque County Jail.

The Lake County Illinois State’s Attorney’s Office, in conjunction with Dubuque County Attorney’s Office, issued a search warrant for DNA from Jones, and detectives with Waukegan CID traveled to Iowa on Sept. 25 to execute the warrant.

On October 11, Waukegan CID detectives were informed that DNA owned

by Jones was located on the victim’s body. In addition, Waukegan detectives executed a search warrant on Nov. 7 on Jones’s 1997 Mercury Marquis, which was still in the custody of the Lake Geneva Wisconsin Police Department. During that search warrant, evidence was collected regarding the Cook

Man arrested in connection with burglaries in Lake, McHenry and Cook counties

On January 8, 2020, Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies and Detectives arrested a Lake Barrington man in Hunter connection Grabowski with numerous burglaries.

Members of the Sheriff’s Warrants Team served an arrest warrant on Hunter Grabowski, 24, at his residence in the 500 block of Beacon Drive, Lake Barrington. Grabowski was wanted on a $50,000.00 failure to appear arrest warrant for theft. While serving the warrant, warrants deputies located property which was recently stolen in a nearby burglary.
