Lake County State’s Attorney Michael G. Nerheim has announced a Zion man was sentenced to 27 years in prison for attempted murder of a police officer.

Olvan Quezada, 22, of the 2900 block of 30th Street, was sentenced to 27 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections on charges of attempted first degree murder of a peace officer for his role in a shooting in the 3000 block of Arthur Court in Waukegan on June 17, 2016.

He was also sentenced to 19 years in prison on charges of aggravated discharge of a firearm involving a peace officer, 10 years in prison for unlawful possession of a firearm by a gang member, and 5 years for possession of a defaced firearm. The prison sentences will be served at the same time.

Quezada was also ordered to serve 3 years of mandatory supervised release after completing his prison sentence.

“We need to do everything in our power to protect those who are sworn to protect us, and we are extremely fortunate this event did not end in a more tragic way,” State’s Attorney Nerheim said. “I’d like to congratulate the officers and police departments in Waukegan and Park City and the attorney’s in my office for all their hard work on this case.”

Healing Tree provides a natural approach to healing

he National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health has reported more adults and children are using mind and body approaches to bolstering wellness in recent years.

The report was revealed through a complementary health questionnaire developed by the NCCIH, part of the National Institutes of Health, and by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Health Statistics.

The survey, which is conducted every five years, is part of an annual study interviewing thousands of Americans about their health- and illness-related experiences.

“The survey data suggest that more people are turning to mind and body approaches than ever before, and the research we support at NCCIH is helping to determine the impact of those approaches on health,” Dr. David Shurtleff, of NCCIH, wrote in a news release.

Mind and body approaches include yoga, meditation, chiropractors, acupuncture, among other avenues.

Healing Tree LLC, of Burlington, offers many of these services and more.

Nikki Burd operates the Healing Tree with business partner Chantry Kerkman.

“We offer massage therapy, acupuncture, yoga, hypnosis, reiki intuitive counseling and we have meditation,” she said. “We have something that everybody can use to help with their natural healing process.”

Burd, noting recent trends, believes some people are looking for natural approaches because they find them more effective.

“It is important to have other options. Sometimes the natural approach is better for people,” she said. “Some people don’t want to go and do aggressive treatments.”

Holistic vision

Burd, a massage therapist for 22 years, launched the business in June 2016 on Milwaukee Avenue and recently moved to a larger facility at 148 E. State St. Burd, who has worked for chiropractic offices before, indicates her vision for the Healing Tree began more than a decade ago.

“My vision was to have everything housed under one roof because I feel like we can network with each other,” said Burd, adding each service operates as a separate business entity but shares the same vision.

“We all come together as one unit because we think it is important to have that same vision.”

The same vision, she said, has

allowed her establishment to thrive because many clients use more than one service.

“They may need a massage, they may need acupuncture, they may need a meditation class, they may need yoga,” she said.

The Healing Tree typically sees anywhere from 50 to 75 people weekly and serves as a safe place for clients to come, according to Kerkman, who has been a massage therapist for more than a decade.

Kerkman’s experience includes working with athletes, notably triathletes, on improving their overall health.

“We provide a safe space for people to come. Our approach is relaxing and therapeutic,” Kerkman said.

“A lot of people are ready to spend more time working on themselves, working on their bodies instead of going to a clinic to get a quick fix.”

Continuous growth

Meanwhile, Burd reports the Healing Tree has shown positive growth since opening in June 2016.

Growth included a location change, which offered a larger space, as well as adding more services.

“We actually went from a smaller space to this space in October. We were there for 3 1/2 years,” she said.

“We knew we wanted to add more to the office. We wanted to add yoga, we wanted to have a room for every one of our therapists because we had too many people in the office, but not enough rooms.”

Additionally, unlike the previous facility, yoga instructors are on hand to offer classes because of more space.

However, Burd said the Healing Tree looks to increase services in the future.

“I think it is going to be great for everybody to come and check us out.

We have a lot of things that we want to do down the road, too.”

Since opening, Burd and Kerkman have seen many people from around Southeast Wisconsin come to seek services, including Waterford, Wind Lake, Elkhorn, Bristol, Delavan and Twin Lakes.

“We do have clients that come from 30 to 50 miles away,” Burd said.

Kerkman, meanwhile, added that some customers have traveled from Illinois.

features such as cupping, tuina and herbal consultations.

Hypnotherapy, reiki and intuitive counseling are some of the other services Healing Tree offers.

Intuitive counseling, according to a Healing Tree brochure, promotes a safe atmosphere to treat some behavioral patterns.

“Experience a one-on-one spoken session in a safe, loving, confidential space,” the brochure states. “You’ll be able to discover, learn, choose,

heal and create your life.”

Products available to customers include, but are not limited to, young living oils, CBD oils, herbal teas, herbal supplements along with bath and body essentials.

Yoga, according to Burd, was one of the most recent features Healing Tree added and has helped the establishment achieve further growth.

“We have been here two months, give or take, so it has grown very well and now we want to let

everybody know what we have here because we just added yoga,” she said. “This facility is a great asset to the community.”

Healing Tree, 148 E. State St., operates Mondays through Fridays from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Drunk driver strikes auxiliary deputy blocking crash scene On December 23, 2019, at approximately 5:55 p.m., Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to Route 12 and Volo Village Road, Volo, for a traffic crash with injuries. When they arrived, they located three vehicles with heavy damage.

Preliminary investigation shows a 1995 Mazda convertible, driven by an 82-year-old male of Lake Zurich, was traveling southbound on Route 12 approaching Volo Village Road. For an unknown reason the driver of the Mazda crossed into the northbound lanes of traffic. The Mazda struck a northbound 2005 Toyota sedan, driven by a 20-yearold male of Lake in the Hills.

The first crash caused the Toyota to rotate into the path of a southbound 2008 Subaru SUV, driven by a 27-yearold male of McHenry. The Subaru struck the Toyota.

The driver of the Mazda was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the Toyota was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center with serious injuries. The driver of the Subaru was uninjured.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene and an autopsy is scheduled. The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit.

While crash investigators were conducting the investigation, a Sheriff’s Auxiliary Deputy was blocking southbound Route 12 at Molidor Road, Volo. To alert drivers that the roadway was closed there were eight traffic cones, numerous flares, and a marked squad car with its emergency lights activated parked perpendicular across the lanes of traffic.

At approximately 7:00PM, Chris L. Miller, 65, of the 29000 block of North Fairfield Road, Unincorporated Mundelein, was driving a 2016 Ford Pickup truck southbound. Miller disregarded the flares, traffic cones, and crashed into the squad car. The collision caused the squad car to

strike the auxiliary deputy, who was standing outside of the squad. The auxiliary deputy sustained serious leg injuries and was transported to a local hospital via ambulance.

Miller fled in his Chris Miller vehicle southbound from the scene. The Ford became disabled, likely due to its heavy damage, in the area of Route 12 and North Fox Lake Road, Lakemoor. Miller was located, found to be driving under the influence of alcohol, and taken into custody by sheriff’s deputies.

The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved the following charges for Miller: aggravated DUI involving an accident with injuries (felony), leaving the scene of an accident with injuries (felony), operation of a vehicle on approach of an emergency vehicle causing injuries (Scott’s Law) (felony), DUI (misdemeanor), operating uninsured vehicle, improper lane usage, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, failure to report an accident, failure to give aid following an accident.

Miller remains held in the Lake County Jail pending an initial court hearing.

Sheriff John Idleburg commented, “While I’m thankful our auxiliary deputy wasn’t killed or critically injured, I am very disappointed a drunk driver crashed into a scene we were working to keep secure, and injured one of our personnel. Then, rather than do the right thing and stop to see if the auxiliary deputy was okay, he fled. Driving under the influence is unacceptable to begin with, crashing into an emergency vehicle while intoxicated, then fleeing, is downright inexcusable.”

All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.

by police and charged later that morning, authorities said. The second person taken into custody during the event was not charged and released by police.

Quezada’s case went to trial and he was found guilty on Oct. 18, 2019.

Waukegan Police Chief Wayne Walles said, “I would like to thank the men and women from the Waukegan Police Department, who continuously choose to put themselves in harms way to keep residents safe.”

The two initially taken in to custody prior to the shooting were: Jonathan Cardona, 27, of the 3000 block of Arthur Court in Waukegan, pleaded guilty in 2017 to felony possession of a firearm and was sentenced to 2 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. William Serwin, 23, of the 1200 block of Victoria Street in North Chicago, is due to go to trial on Jan. 13 on charges of possession of a weapon without a FOID card and defacing a firearm.

Sheriff’s office hosting free snowmobile safety class The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office is hosting a free Snowmobile Safety Education Classes in Woodstock.

After successfully passing this class, attendees will receive a State of Illinois Snowmobile Safety Education Certificate of Competency.

Illinois requires any person without a driver’s license, or at least 12-years-old and less than 16-years-old, operating a

snowmobile to possess a valid Illinois Snowmobile Safety Education Certificate or be accompanied on the snowmobile by a person at least 16-years-old.

Attendees of this one-day, eight (8) hour course will learn the basics in maintenance and repair of snowmobiles, proper and safe operation, history of snowmobiling, first aid, protection of the environment

and the state laws.

The class is available on: Saturday, Jan. 11, 2020 from 8am-4:30pm.

Soul mates need to grow on each other

My husband and I met in driver’s training class when we were 15. We’ve been best friends ever since. How corny is that?

Friendship doesn’t always lead to romance, however, and for us that leap didn’t come until years after we’d declared our best friendship.

During the time after we met, but before we started dating, we helped each other out in the romance department.

I set him up with my friends.

He provided comfort when an unbelievably stupid boyfriend broke up with me. I often criticized his choice in women; he hardly ever liked the guys I went out with.

Each year, on our birthdays, we’d go out on a “date.” And on New Year’s Eve, if neither of us was in a relationship, it was agreed that we’d celebrate the night together. You know, sort of like best friends would do.

All the while I was in search of Mr. Right – my soul mate. The mere thought of him made me sigh with anticipation. I knew he was out there – somewhere – the guy who was born just for me, and I him.

Trouble was, this soul mate of mine wasn’t making himself easy to find. He had no distinguishing characteristics that I knew of. I couldn’t tell him from a hole in the wall – or a best friend.

CLC students document unknown ‘writing’ system during Costa Rica trip College of Lake County anthropology students who participated in a research project in Costa Rica last summer are among the first to document the existence of knotted string recording devices, a previously unknown “writing” system in the Americas.

Students Rebecca Rivera and Julia Marinescu accompanied Scott Palumbo, Ph.D., CLC anthropology professor, to southern Costa Rica last summer on a field study trip for an anthropology class. They conducted interviews in Spanish with elderly residents who recalled using these knotted cords in their youth. The knotted cords, typically made from plant fibers, were used by indigenous cultures as calendars and for many other tasks, ranging from conducting a census to counting cattle. They suspect

people still actively use these items in remote areas.

Palumbo’s work picks up where other researchers left off. Among them was William More Gabb, a naturalist who visited Costa Rica in 1873, gathered a collection of knotted cords and later deposited them in the Smithsonian Institution. He intended to learn more about the cords, but his life was cut short by malaria and tuberculosis, Palumbo said.

“We set off to determine if living people could still interpret the meaning of these items,” Palumbo explained. “I wanted my anthropology students to learn first-hand some of the practices we studied in class.”

Having led several anthropological field study tours at CLC, Palumbo said the college stands out from its peers

by offering students a greater variety of anthropology courses and providing field-research experience abroad. CLC’s affordable cost for the venture creates learning opportunities for a much wider range of students compared to four-year schools.

“A similar trip would often cost much more in program fees and travel expenses on top of tuition at a four-year public university,” he said. This cost is a significant barrier to working-class students and contributes to their underrepresentation in the social sciences. Rivera and Marinescu paid only the cost of tuition, a plane ticket and passport fees. The remainder of their in-country costs were subsidized.

Beyond cost savings, the practical field research yields many other benefits, Palumbo said. “It

provides firsthand exposure to a field, provides relevant, accredited training, offers a chance to work closely with mentors and builds professional networks,” he said.

The students found the venture as enriching as it was economical. Rivera reflected on her interview with a village shaman about the knotted cords: “He thanked us for coming and said we were the first group of non-residents to come to learn about their culture, as opposed to other visitors who wanted to take their land, develop it or change their culture in some way.”

The trip gave Rivera self-confidence in doing anthropological work. “You can only learn so much in classroom,” she said. “Shadowing an anthropologist at work equipped me with confidence in being an

ethnographer, practicing cultural anthropology, conducting oral interviews, observation and research. The trip further affirmed my passion in the field.” Rivera wants to work as an ethnographer serving the underprivileged.

Palumbo presented their research paper, “The Historic and Ethnographic Use of Knotted String Records in the IsthmoColombian Area” at an anthropology conference in Vienna, Austria this fall. It will soon be published in 2020.

Woman, granddaughter get fresh start for holidays Dear W.C., Christmas will be here soon, but it will be a difficult day for my 11-yearold granddaughter and me.

Her mother, my daughter, died from breast cancer last March and we have been just trying to get by ever since.

My daughter was sick for several years so I had moved into her apartment to care for her. She had more room and it made more sense at the time, but now I am struggling to pay the rent. Our only income is my Social Security; my granddaughter receives a small survivor’s benefit, but it does not go far. My daughter had a little saved but it went to pay for her funeral and all her medical bills. I have been trying to keep up with rent, food, utilities, school supplies, car repairs and clothes for my granddaughter.

She has no relationship with her father, who lives out of state. He sends child support when he is working, which isn’t often and usually is much less than what he’s supposed to pay. We are having a very hard time financially and spiritually this season. I pray you are able to help us so we do not have to deal with the added stress of becoming homeless.

volunteer to pick up food if needed and I brought gift cards.

I drove to the apartment and called the grandmother from the parking lot She answered and we talked for a few minutes.

After meeting everyone, including their dog, Sadie, the grandmother gave me a quick tour of the apartment.

The granddaughter showed us her room but the door to the second bedroom was shut.

“I haven’t been in here for a while,” said the grandmother, who slept on the couch. “This was the room I shared with my daughter until she went into hospice at the end. I haven’t been able to sleep in here since that day.”

She asked her granddaughter to go do her homework, Sadie following her.

“I try to not talk about my grief or our financial problems in front of her.

She has been having a hard enough time dealing with the loss of her mother.”

The grandmother began to cry while telling me how much help her

granddaughter had been.

“She is my whole reason for living now.”

We had an emotional conversation about the loss of her daughter before discussing their financial problems.

She gathered her paperwork, and I could see they were falling further behind each month. The rent was more than they could afford and they had several unexpected bills over the past few months, including a dentist bill for the granddaughter and several car repairs that had put them in an even more precarious financial position.

She admitted to cutting back or only eating two meals a day occasionally. I made her promise not to do that anymore.

“Who will take care of your granddaughter if something happens to you?”

“No one. I see what you are getting at. I need to take better care of myself.”

She said due to car repair issues she had not gotten to the food pantry for the past month but had been there several times over the summer. Now that her granddaughter was in school she was receiving the free/ reduced breakfast and lunch program.

I handed her several gift cards for groceries and texted the volunteer to pick up some food.

Meanwhile, she was a month behind on the rent

and utilities. Their income covered those items and food most months, but any unusual expenses left them short. The granddaughter had needed a trip to the dentist, and the grandmother had needed new glasses.

Then the two car repairs had set them back before Christmas. And I knew they needed to move into a more affordable rental.

I wanted a fresh start for them. The grandmother asked how she could move because she did not have enough money for rent and a security deposit. That is when I took the opportunity to tell her about all of our donors.

I knew of one building that could work and called the landlord. I was happy to hear they had a twobedroom that would be available in two weeks. We discussed the rent, which was within their budget, and she was willing to waive the pet fee when I told her how well-behaved Sadie was.

I told the grandmother about her new apartment.

She was shocked we could accomplish this so quickly and even more surprised when I told her we would pay the security deposit and first two months’ rent. We also would pay her overdue rent and bring her utility bill up-to -date.

“I can’t tell you how thankful I am to you for helping me move out of this apartment. I have

struggled with the memories of my daughter in her last few months while living in this apartment. I want to start making new happy memories with my granddaughter. I just don’t think we could ever make them here.”

The granddaughter was happy to run and greet the volunteer and her carry in the bags of food. We made arrangements for help with their packing and moving.

Then the volunteer looked around and said, “This apartment could use a little Christmas cheer.”

“We decided to skip Christmas this year. And we are moving soon anyway.”

But the volunteer and I both said, “There will be no skipping Christmas this year.”

And three weeks later the grandmother and granddaughter moved into their new apartment. It was smaller but it was all the space they needed. When they arrived they found the volunteer had decorated the apartment with Christmas cheer.
