Lovin’ Oven could come to Antioch By Gail Peckler-Dziki CORRESPONDENT
Ken and Matt Slove, proprietors of Lovin’ Ovens, appeared at the July 26 Village of Antioch Committee of the Whole meeting to seek a grant to help the move into the downtown area. Ken and his wife, Betty, are the owners and son Matt serves as the general manager. The site is the former Hannah’s site on Lake Street. Antioch Mayor Larry Hanson said he had been working on helping Lovin’ Ovens to move its headquarters to Antioch for several months. The plan calls for the renovation of the 39,000-square‐foot space including the roof, which was an unexpected cost. The original price was $1.1 million, but the building was in bad repair. Slove, who negotiated a lower price, said the realtor told him that the roof was only five years old. The roof report, however, turned out to be false after an inspection revealed the roof wasn’t valid. Slove, who told the board the original plans were pared down to refit and repair the structure, but came up $250,000 short. “There are a number of changes we would like to make that can wait a few years,” said Slove, who seeks a grant. Without the grant, the Sloves can’t move the Lovin’ Oven Cakery to Antioch. The Sloves, who graduated from Antioch Community High School, reportedly want the busi-

ness in their hometown. “This is our hometown community,” he said, “and we want to locate here.” Slove said 35 of his full-time employees would move to the new location and retain their jobs. If they move, five new full-time jobs with annual salaries of $30,000 and 15 part-time jobs with a starting salary of $11 would be created. “We love this community,” Slove
said. “We support Open Arms Mission and we donate pancake batter to all non-profits for pancake breakfast fundraisers.” Hanson said that this project would jumpstart the revitalization of the downtown and have a positive impact on other downtown businesses. “Mr. Slove has been upfront and honest about his difficulties. The building has so many problems.” Village administrator Jim Keim
said there was enough money in the budget to allow for the grant. During discussion, all board members seemed to agree that it was a good idea to give the grant to Slove. They were assured that Slove intended to stay long-term in Antioch. Keim said he believed that through sales tax, the village would recoup the grant amount. The grant was needed immediately, since Slove intended to close on the property at the end of July.
