While coffee or tea can be obtained anywhere, from the local fast food stop to a high- end restaurant, where one stops to purchase their beverage may have a direct effect on how the person savors the coffee break. When Nicole Hayes and her husband started to consider developing a special café targeted for downtown Antioch, they envisioned a place where people would gather, relax and unwind from the stress of their days. Other visions included a meeting place for friends and co-workers, gathering to share life’s ups and downs over a friendly cup of coffee or a light lunch. “The concept of Café Book was actually partially formed in the pages of a book,” Hayes said. ”There is a Nora Roberts book where a character works at a coffeehouse/ bookstore named Café Book. This fictional shop fit our vision for our own brick and mortar store and the name stuck.” In 2007, after months planning, the Café

Book opened its doors at 395 Lake St. This coffee shop is unique, offering a combination of luncheon restaurant and quick stop coffee shop, bookstore and antique shop. While coffee shops have a cookie cutter look, Café Book is uniquely designed. The inside space offers versatility, which can suit anyone’s needs, whether they are looking for a quiet spot to relax, a space to work on the computer, or a table to gather with friends, the right space is available. This space is divided by bookshelves, walls and seating groups to allow a variety of people to have privacy. One of the larger rooms has space for a business meeting, a book club to meet or family members to gather. The smallest room holds antique and gift items for purchase. Books on the bookshelves are arranged according to interests and also by ages. Visitors to Café Book are greeted by smiling baristas ready to prepare one’s favorite beverage. Most of them are frequent customers who are greeted by name.

The choices of gourmet coffee drinks, hot or cold, fine grade teas or chai lattes, and freshly baked munchies make that morning or afternoon break special. Bakery items are made in-house while breads and bagels arrive fresh from Turano Bread Company.

The Antioch township assessor, Heather Kufalk-Marotta, moved her office to 1490 Main St. in Antioch, between Johnny’s Chophouse and Main St. USA Car Wash in July. Lee Perry, an assessor staff member, said the move was for taxpayer convenience. “The new location is centrally located and there is better parking for seniors,” he said in a recent telephone interview. Perry answered The Hi-Liter’s questions because the assessor was out in the field and unavailable. There is less distraction in the new location, Perry said. “We don’t have to answer the phone for township questions or clerk questions,” he said. “And the parking is better for seniors since the parking spaces are closer to the building.” It was noted that the Antioch Township clerk, Anita Merkel Dyer, has an office at the new location. The website for the assessor’s office states that voter registration is one of the services available at the new assessor’s office.
