Grass Lake opens Pre-K registration In preparation for the 201718 school year, the Grass Lake School District No. 36 in Antioch is accepting registrations for the school’s Pre-K program, and has scheduled an open house next week. The open house set for Wednesday, May 10 from 1-3 p.m. is for prospective parents looking to enroll their children in the school’s program. “We are in the little schoolhouse,” a district press release states.

According to the press release, the program offers 2-1/2 hour classes five days per week with supervision from a teacher and instructional aide. The two-year program for 3to 4-year-old students plans to meet the goal of Illinois Early Learning Standards. The Children’s Department where the portrait will hang, was dedicated in honor of LaBuda who retired last year after serving as Library Director for 34 years. She was overseer of the library’s expansion which included three locations and the growth in the number of books housed at the library from 60,000 to over 180,000. She was also the first director to face the transition from the analog world of books to the digital media of the computer age. The public was invited to attend the ceremony.

A former Grass Lake School student and her family plan to offer a variety of crops from their farm in Saturday’s Plant Sale and Student Activity Day held from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. at Grass Lake School District, 26177 W. Grass Lake Road. The event held annually looks to offer students an opportunity learn the art of agriculture, according to a Grass Lake School District press release. “In continuance of our summer school garden class, students are provided with hands on opportunities to learn how to plant, grow and maintain a vegetable garden,” the release states. “All the plants for our summer school gardening program are generously donated from Jennifer Patton, a former GLS Graduate, through her

family owned farm, Crooked Pine Farm and Garden.” In addition, there will be painted pots available for purchase from Pots by Sue to brighten up and decorate your patio and several stations for students to attend and learn about gardening. The following plants are accessible through the sale: • 25 varieties of tomato plants (i.e. cherries, plum, medium to large and heirloom) • 13 varieties of green, orange, yellow, and several mild to super-hot peppers • Variety of herbs (i.e. oregano, rosemary, thyme, basil and lemon basil) • Broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage plants • Flowering baskets and individual flowers • Variety of succulents
