State’s Attorney educates students on drug use dangers As part of Lake County’s anti-drug initiative, State’s Attorney Mike Nerheim delivered a presentation about available resources to students at Grass Lake School, where the school looks to take a proactive approach. The program, which was held on April 20, had fourth through eighth graders rotate among four 30-minute sessions. They covered a variety of drug-related topics, including the Lake County Opioid Initiative, the anonymous TextA-Tip youth crisis hotline, the link between vaping and marijuana and the health dangers of vaping and tobacco use. Nerheim also fielded a number of questions from students. School Principal Donna Plath sought to become proactive in combating the drug epidemic afflicting all levels of education and contacted Lake County to arrange the event. In addition to the presentation to students, a special Parent University was held on April 23, at which the above topics also were discussed from an adult perspective. Plath said her goal was “to provide our parents with information and signs to look for so they can actively

Fire Chief Jon Cokefair of the First Fire Protection District issued a report to the Antioch Township Board at the April 12 meeting. In his presentation, Cokefair explained the challenges his department faces, including staff retention. “I hope this will be an annual event,” he told the board and half dozen residents that attended the meeting. Cokefair reported that he, along with administrative assistant Lori Kikos, are the only full-time employees of the district. The district operates on a parttime, contract model for employees. Cokefair said the board recently raised wages from $13.80 to $17.80 per hour. He hopes the wage increase can help with retention of 107 part-time staff who work at the district’s three fire stations. “It takes about three years for someone to get fully trained and then they move on.” Cokefair said. “I can’t blame them. They leave for full-time work with benefits and a pension.” The difficulty, he said, comes when the full-time employers include a clause that prevents employees from
