Local water ski teams finish in top four in national competition

Bring the whole family and join University of Illinois Extension for a “Farm Stroll”.

A “Farm Stroll” is a free, self-guided driving tour of multiple farms holding open houses in Lake and McHenry County.

Diverse family farms producing local food, fiber and fun will open their farm gates to the public so people can learn about how they produce everything from apples to zucchini.

There is no charge for the Farm Stroll but individual farmers will have products and produce available for purchase. Participants must follow the rules of each farm and be respectful of the animals. Pets are not allowed during this event.

On the weekend of Aug. 10 through Aug. 12, local water ski teams the Wonder Lake Water Ski Team, of Wonder Lake, and the Aquanuts, of Twin Lakes, Wisconsin, arrived in Janesville, Wisconsin, to participate in the 44th Indmar Marine Engines Division 1 Show Ski National Championships. The event was presented by Polk County Tourism and Sports Marketing. The competition was held along the Rock River at Traxler Park.

There were 14 teams that participated in the event for a total of 1,500 athletes. Each team prepared to show their best work. Each of the teams competing had one hour to present a theatrical performance, complete with elaborate costuming. Each act is staged and includes music and fast action by the skiers. The team competition is judged on originality, presentation and execution of the performance.

Over the years, both the Wonder Lake Ski Team and the Aquanuts have done well in competitions, bringing home various titles including national titles. This year, both teams finished well, Twin Lakes receiving fourth place and Wonder Lake finishing third. First place was captured by the home team the Rock Aqua Jays of Janesville while the Mad-City Ski Team from Madison, Wisconsin, finished second.

About the Wonder Lake Ski Club The Wonder Lake Ski Club was formed in 1955 by eight local teenagers. Within a year, the membership increased to 40. While they were actively skiing from that time, they did not put on shows for the community until Labor Day of 1959. In 1962, the club put on a ski show for neighboring McHenry’s Marine Days Festival, now known as Fiesta Days.

Engaging in competitive tournaments began in 1986. They have been very successful bringing home a number of first place finishes in regional, state and national competitions. They have continuously placed in the top five at nationals and succeeded in winning the title in 1996, 2000, 2001 and 2010.

While they enjoy competition, their favorite activity is to provide active and exciting shows for the community.

During the summer, free shows are provided on Friday evenings at Center Beach in Wonder Lake. Donations are always appreciated.

Currently, the club has a membership of approximately 140 members although only about 60 are actually skiers.

Others provide support such as driving boats, spotting and organizing fundraisers. Many of the support members are former skiers and family members of the current team.

About the Aquanuts The Aquanuts, who are based just over the state line in Twin Lakes, Wisconsin, began performing in 1975. They were dependent on sponsorships and donations from the public and commercial businesses such as Munson Marine, Dr. Pepper and Mercury motors. Their first equipment included a hydro dyne boat purchased used from the Min-aqua Bats in Minocqua, Wisconsin, for $300.

According to the team, they were the first to utilize background musical soundtracks, which were quickly copied by other teams. In their first state competition in 1975, they placed eleventh and that same year finished eighth at nationals. Their competition status continued to improve along with their innovative routines. This year’s Aquanuts show director Chad Hart was a former Aquanuts ski team member along with his brother and sister. His daughter is currently on the team.

The Aquanuts provide shows to the community on Wednesday and Saturday evenings at Lance Park throughout the summer. These shows are free to the public but donations are gratefully accepted.

Each year, the best male wins the Skip Gilkerson Award and the best female skier wins the Willa Cook award at nationals. The award for the best skier of each sex is determined by the tournament judges. This year, Aquanuts skier Kailey Koehler received the Willa Cook award. In her performances this year, Kailey presented a number of highly skilled routines including skiing barefoot, circles, swivel, doubles and was on the pyramid team.

Three of the Aquanuts team members were named to Team USA. They will compete at Show Ski Worlds this year in Ontario, Canada. The three skiers who will represent their team and the USA are swivel star Grace Gurda, barefoot champion Kailey Koehler and wake boarder/trick skier and Wisconsin State Freestyle Jump Champion Ethan Shukla.

Congratulations to both the Wonder Lake Water Ski Team and the Twin Lakes Aquanuts for their fine performances this year.

Turner spent nearly a year in the field, including time just south of the DMZ, or demilitarized zone, which separated North from South.

He was among those assigned to the 101st Airborne Division as replacements for troops lost in the battle for Hamburger Hill, a costly and controversial confrontation near the Laos border in May 1969.

Turner was the leader of a 10-man infantry squad, which also worked with two so-called Kit Carson Scouts, former North Vietnamese combatants who had changed sides. He didn’t lose a man, and they all returned home unscathed – at least physically.

“We worked and we drilled and we knew what was expected of us,” Turner said. “We depended on each other with our lives. It was a good bunch of guys. We were all very fortunate to get out.”

And he wants Turner to experience and enjoy those feelings as a reward for his service.

“Dave is one of those ‘what you see is what you get’ types of people,” Johnson said. “He feels strongly about family, community and most of all, country. He has a family history in Palmyra and stays involved in the community.

He is a compassionate guy who probably doesn’t want anyone to know how much. He believes in helping neighbors and friends in time of need and doesn’t expect anything in return. He’s a good friend.”

Turner, whose Army stint ended at age 26, returned to finish graduate work at La Crosse. He went into business for a couple of years with three other veterans before working for J.I. Case Company as a merchandising analyst and administrator for North American distribution centers and an operations manager of the Atlanta distribution center.

He joined two other companies and worked in distribution in Nashville until retiring in 2005.

That’s when he returned to Palmyra and his grandparents’ house, later moving next door into his uncle’s home that has been in the family since 1911.

He took an active role in the Palmyra Historical Society and in local government as a village trustee (2010-2012) and village president (2012-2018).

He putters in his shop and enjoys spending as much time as possible with his daughter and her family in Tennessee.

However, the time he spent in Vietnam is never far from his mind. Turner won’t talk on the

record about certain things that happened in Southeast Asia. And like many other veterans who have witnessed the horrors of war, he understandably keeps other experiences, and how they have affected him, to himself.

“I don’t know, but I think I understand people of other cultures and those with other ways much better,” he said about how those months overseas have changed him. “I became so much more aware and observant of things, my surroundings, because life depended on it.

“There’s no doubt Vietnam changed me … I don’t know how things would have turned out otherwise.”

One man he could confide in after returning home was his uncle, Paul W. Turner, who served as a combat engineer in World War II. “He would sit down with me and talk … we could do that because we knew what each other had been through. We had that common bond.”

Those thoughts and emotions no doubt will drift through his mind as he takes part in the Honor Flight.

“I didn’t know if I wanted to go, and I wasn’t going to go unless Dan did … I didn’t think it was any big thing, but to see these guys’ enthusiasm and all the effort it takes to get them there …” said Turner, whose ancestors came to the area in 1854. “It’s going to be very emotional for me, but I’m looking forward to it.”

driven even more by the poverty and suffering that abounded.

I was driving a few hours south of O’Hare Airport to pick up a dog for my family and came upon Pembroke Township. My then 7-year-old son and I drove past many shacks that could not possibly have people living in them.

At least that was what we thought, until my son pointed out that there were indeed people living in these shacks, many of them senior citizens and children.

Here we were, miles from home and in the middle of nowhere, in an area that I would never have gone before. Little did I know it must have been God’s plan. My biggest quest to help people began in that place.

I returned the next day and met with the local pastor. I learned there were more than 2,000 people living in these rundown shacks. Most of them were there because for decades they had been hired as farm laborers; it was all they knew. Then the advent of large combines and big equipment meant they were no longer needed. They were uneducated and had nowhere else to go, so they remained in the rural farm community.

That is, until the children became adults and left for jobs in the city. Some never returned and left behind their children with grandparents to raise them. It was like stepping back in time to the Depression. People were living with no roofs or indoor plumbing and on dirt floors.

Children were dressed in rags and most times hungry. They were tough people who didn’t trust outsiders.

Working with the pastor, I found they had a food pantry but no food. I began to bring truckloads of food. Then I brought mattresses. So many people were sleeping on floors or whole families were sharing one bed. I brought in cases of diapers, toilet paper, toothbrushes, shoes and toys for the children.

We would take our convoy of trucks and go from shack to trailer and deliver these muchneeded items. I found senior citizens living in the dark who had never known the luxury of indoor plumbing. That was when I began to help with utilities. I had propane tanks filled so they could cook and have heat in the winter.

I continued to look for more people to help and found myself visiting other good organizations like Jesus People and the Salvation Army. I learned so much about how good organizations are run by their examples, and I supported their efforts.

Then my cousin took me to where he worked, the North Center for the Handicapped.

It provided care for multiple handicapped children and adults so their low-income families and caregivers could go to work.

These handicapped individuals lived in terrible poverty but were well cared

We have changed and modified with the times. We did not have social media or a website when we began.

There was no such thing as online donations. Yet the simple act of helping someone in need is timeless.

We encounter hunger and poverty almost daily. Lack of utilities continues to plague people in our communities.

Homelessness is still frightening and dangerous.

These things will never change with the times.

That is where Time Is Now remains steadfast in our goals.

The same work we did 29 years ago is still relevant and necessary today.

After several months of coaxing, I agreed. But I insisted on remaining anonymous, so I used the pen name W.C., which stood for With Christ, because he is at the center of all I do.

Remaining anonymous lasted for several years until we began to receive matching grant opportunities from Richard Driehaus.

Richard advised me to make myself tangible to our donors, so my first public picture was he presented our matching funds donation check.

Thousands of letters requesting assistance have been opened since that time.

In 2011, I was nominated along with thousands of other organizations as a CNN Hero.

I did not feel comfortable with this nomination but finally agreed because it would bring much-needed publicity to the issue of poverty in America.

“Fox News,” “CBS Evening News” and “Sunday Morning” all did stories about Time Is Now. That was also our best year as we helped over 1,000 people. The story of how a small-town newspaper column brought help to thousands of people was good news for many.

And we have continued our good works together. We have many wonderful supporters, volunteers, matching grant donors and service providers.

Our charity efforts are felt by many thanks to you and your continued faith and support.

I was one of five given the Realtor Good Neighbor award last year out of 1.2 million Realtors. Being acknowledged by others in my trade for the charity work I do was an honor.

Others were propped up in ill-fitting older wheelchairs with all kinds of makeshift modifications. Many were on feeding tubes and unable to speak.

The director of this wonderful organization pointed out that many of these individuals had fully functioning minds but were trapped in bodies that could not function. They could only communicate their needs or emotions by using facial expressions or limited body movements. But I learned the subtlety of a smile and how easy it was to bring some relief and happiness to them despite their suffering.

New wheelchairs were ordered, while clothing, food and other supplies were provided. I often left North Center for the Handicapped with tears in my eyes and a renewed urgency to bring even more poverty relief to our handicapped fellow creations.

Our works were featured in People magazine in 2000. It was our first public acknowledgment of the poverty relief we were providing as a family. Around this time, my family moved to Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.

Anonymously, I began to help people living in shacks and falling-apart trailers.

I soon found handicapped who were living without wheelchairs and ramps. Dark houses often indicated a lack of utilities. Hungry children at schools showed me there was a lack of food at home.

As I made more connections in the area, our organization began to find more and more people in need. One day my neighbor found out about what I was doing. It turned out he was

Dear readers, Many people have been asking me how The Time Is Now to Help began and wanting to know the history of our charity work.

Why and how did I begin this journey helping povertystricken senior citizens, veterans, the handicapped, working poor families and single mothers and children?

When I was a boy, I lived in poverty. I did not always understand why my mother was crying or why I was hungry or why my clothing was too small or why we had no lights. All I knew was my mother was suffering, and at times I was, too.

She worked hard but could not afford the expense of raising three children on her own. My father was often gone for weeks at a time and did not provide much financial support for his family because of his gambling addiction.

When I got a little older — a malnourished 12-year-old — I got my first job. I looked like a child, but I persuaded my first boss to hire me due to my determination to help my mother. I made a vow to God that when I was an adult and made more money, I would help others who were suffering just like my beloved mother.

Years later I remembered that vow when I began to help people with each paycheck I received. Soon I was giving to many organizations, but I became discouraged when I read their financial statements.

Such a large percentage of my donations were going toward administrative costs and expenses. I decided to begin my own 501(c) 3 nonprofit and put in the articles of incorporation that no part of any donation would be used for any salaries or expenses.

I wanted 100 percent of all funds to go to poverty relief and would pay for the charity’s expenses from my own business.

In 1989, Time Is Now was recognized as a 501(c) 3 charity. Lake Geneva Area Realty, which I own, presently is paying for business expenses. It pays for our telephone, website, accounting, office supplies, insurance, office space, printing and postage so your donations go only to providing poverty relief.

After months of planning, my charity was in place and I set out to help as many people as I could. I wanted to focus on the children, elderly and handicapped because they are the most helpless. They really cannot fend for themselves, especially kids who are born into poverty.

I found many elderly to whom rent, food and utilities were considered a luxury.

These seniors usually ended up on the street or in a rundown apartment with no heat or food.

From the start, I was overwhelmed by the need.

I found people suffering everywhere I went. So, with the help of family and volunteers, I began helping throughout Illinois and Wisconsin.

I was shocked by the heartless greed I found in many of these fraudulent organizations. My determination to help was

This international health equity initiative aims to end the dual epidemics of HIV and HIV-related stigma, and this resolution affirms Lake County’s commitment to dismantle HIV stigma and barriers to diagnosis and treatment for

people living with HIV. “Scientific evidence shows that people living with HIV on antiretroviral therapy with an undetectable viral load in their blood do not transmit HIV to their sexual partners,” said Executive Director of the Lake County Health Department and Community Health Center Mark Pfister. “By amplifying the U=U message, we can make new HIV infections a thing of the past.”

Reducing HIV stigma encourages those living with HIV to initiate and adhere to a successful treatment regimen, closely monitor their viral load and stay in regular medical care. For those people who are not infected with HIV, the HIV prevention pill, pre-exposure prophylaxis, reduces the risk of becoming infected with HIV by more than 90 percent.

The Health Department is part of the “Illinois Getting to

Zero” initiative, which aims to see zero new HIV infections in Illinois and zero people living with HIV who are not on treatment by 2030.

First 2018 human case of West Nile virus found in Lake County The Lake County Health Department and Community Health Center has reported the first human case of West Nile virus in Lake County for 2018. A Waukegan resident in her 60s became ill in mid-August.

“Take precautions to protect yourself from mosquito bites and West Nile virus,” said the Lake County Health Department’s Executive Di-

rector Mark Pfister. “Even though the weather is getting cooler, mosquitoes will remain active until the first hard frost.”

To date, 61 pools or batches of mosquitoes and two birds have tested positive for West Nile virus in 2018.

Since 2002, there have been 66 human cases of West Nile virus in Lake County, as well as two confirmed deaths.

Residents should follow the “4 Ds of Defense” to protect themselves and their family from mosquitoes: • Drain: Drain standing water from items around a home, yard and business.

• Defend: When outdoors, use an insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, 2-undecanone or IR3535 and reapply according to label

directions.

• Dawn and Dusk: Residents should protect themselves all day and night, and wear repellent outdoors during these prime times for mosquito activity.

• Dress: Residents should wear long sleeves, pants and closed toe shoes when outdoors to cover their skin.

Most people infected with West Nile virus have no

symptoms of illness. However, some may become ill usually three to 15 days after the bite of an infected mosquito. Common symptoms include fever, nausea, headache and muscle ache. In some individuals, severe illness including meningitis or encephalitis, or even death, can occur. People older than 50 and individuals with weakened immune systems

are at higher risk for severe illness from West Nile virus.

Residents can call the Health Department’s West Nile hotline to report areas of stagnant water, report locations of dead birds and obtain more information on the signs and symptoms of West Nile virus at 847-377-8300.

Say what you mean, mean what you say How are you? What’s up?

What’s new? How about this crazy hot (cold, rainy, dry) weather we’ve been having? Have a great day!

Small talk. We’ve all participated in the chatter, often not even thinking about what we’re saying.

It’s rote communication.

Blah, blah, blah.

But what do people mean – really – when they engage in this routine conversation?

And what do they expect as a response?

Let’s start with “How are you?” It’s a common question we’ve all probably asked and fielded. Variations on the phrase include “How’s it going?” “How’ve you been?” and “How’s life?” to name just a few.

These conversation starters have a purpose rooted in politeness. They are not, necessarily, an

invitation to provide a detailed update on medical maladies, financial woes, job issues or family difficulties.

“Oh boy, let me tell you.

I’ve had this infected toe for weeks. And we aren’t sure if the medical insurance will pay for it. To top it off, I’ve been out of work because I can’t walk and they’re threatening to lay me off and my wife is mad as heck and threatening to leave me.

Otherwise things are good.

Thanks for asking. What was your name, again?”

Despite the innocence

of the question regarding “How are you,” people like to share. I think this may be exponentiated by our plugged-in, social medialaden society. People don’t get enough face time of the real facial variety and we are born to yearn it.

Typing onscreen doesn’t cut it. So people, if asked, will share – sometimes more information than the polite conversation starter predicted or intended.

When they do, I suggest one thing: listen. Even when they don’t know your name.

It’s the kind thing to do.

“What’s up?” is a close cousin to “How are you?”

When asked, I enjoy a clever response. I simply say, “The sky.” Practically genius, I know. My sons laugh every time. Not. Initial conversation that centers on the weather

indicates one of two things.

First, the person may have a legitimate interest in becoming a meteorologist.

This is unlikely.

Second, they may be attempting to avoid an awkward silence by filling it with a universal topic. Weather is a safe and politically uncharged subject – unless you are talking climate change, acid rain, hurricanes, flooding, droughts, tornadoes, tsunamis or blizzards. Then you better stay clear.

Maybe talking about the weather isn’t so safe after all.

“What’s new” could possibly be the most dangerous question of all. Asking such a risky question leaves you open to all sorts of unexpected and unforeseen responses.

Lake County Sheriff’s Office offers safety tips for motorists and parents during the school year School is in session and the Lake County Sheriff’s Office has provided a few safety tips for motorists and parents.

Illinois state law requires motorists to come to a complete stop when a pedestrian/runner or cyclist is in a marked crosswalk.

Reduce risks in a school safety zone by eliminating any distractions, including cell phone use. If someone is picking up a student and they need to use their cell phone to contact them, they should pull over, park and call.

School bus safety tips are as follows: • Illinois law states it is illegal to pass a school bus that is stopped and is displaying the stop sign arm.

• Motorists on a road with four or

more lanes that is at least two lanes of traffic away in opposite direction does not have to stop for a stopped bus traveling in the opposite direction.

However, motorists are required to stop if they are traveling the same direction as the stopped bus.

• Under Illinois law, school bus drivers can report the license plate numbers of vehicles that illegally pass them.

• First-time offenders can have their driver’s license suspended for three months and a repeat offender, within a five-year period, can have their license suspended for a year.

Man arrested after fleeing from deputy in Lake Villa Township A Lake County Sheriff’s Deputy in the area of North Cremona Avenue and West Verona Avenue, Lake Villa Township, observed what appeared to be a drug transaction between a driver of a vehicle and a pedestrian at approximately 3:20 a.m. on Aug. 30, 2018, according to a Lake County Sheriff’s Office press release.

The Sheriff’s Deputy activated his squad car emergency lights and attempted to stop both the vehicle and the pedestrian. The pedestrian retreated inside a residence in the 37400 block of North Cremona Avenue and the driver fled in the vehicle.

As the driver of the vehicle fled, he struck a curb and his vehicle became inoperable.

He then fled on foot from Reginald D. the Sheriff’s Deputy.

Satchell The driver of the vehicle was identified as Reginald D. Satchell, 33, of the 400 block of Hickory Street, Waukegan, according to the release.

“The Sheriff’s Deputy apprehended Satchell after a brief foot chase. A Lake County Sheriff’s Canine

Team responded and tracked the path Satchell ran. K9 Dax located a package containing over 30 grams of cocaine,” said the release.

Satchell was transported to the Lake County Jail and charged with: • Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance • Aggravated Fleeing and Eluding • Resisting a Peace Officer Satchell remains held in the Lake County Jail pending an initial court hearing.

Sheriff Curran reminds the public the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
