Fatal pedestrian traffic crash in Antioch

K-9 Dax places at regional canine competition, finds suicidal man Deputy John Forlenza and K-9 Dax traveled to Sterling Heights, Michigan in August to participate in the United States Police Canine Association (USPCA) Region #19 Patrol Dog Trial. The duo brought home several regional titles following the certification/ competition course.

The first two days, K-9 Dax completed his annual/ national certifications in tracking, narcotics searches (rooms and vehicles), and cadaver detection. For the final two days, K-9 Dax participated in a trial where he competed in the areas of obedience, agility, scent work (suspect and article searches), apprehension, and apprehension with gunfire.

Deputy Forlenza and K-9 Dax brought the following regional titles home to Lake County:

Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to the area of Route 173, west of Hunt Club Road, unincorporated Antioch on Aug. 23 at approximately 11:15 p.m., for a pedestrian struck by a vehicle. Sheriff’s Deputies arrived and found a 44-yearold man of Woodridge deceased in the roadway.

Preliminary investigation shows a 2009 Volkswagen Jetta, driven by a 33-yearold female of Lindenhurst, was traveling westbound on Route 173, just west of Hunt Club Road. The pedestrian, for an unknown reason, was standing in the westbound lanes of traffic. The pedestrian was struck by the westbound Volkswagen and sustained fatal injuries. The pedestrian was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The driver of the Volkswagen was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with non-life-threatening injuries.

Bavarian Pride Deck out in Lederhosen for area Oktoberfests

here are plenty of opportunities for people to burst with Bavarian pride, even if they are not German, with a handful of Oktoberfest celebrations approaching.

Oktoberfest is celebrated worldwide and features Germaninspired food, beverages and several activities.

Just over the state line, the area has four Oktoberfest events on tap, starting with Old Settlers Oktoberfest in the Village of Paddock Lake on Saturday, Sept. 14, followed by Oktoberfests in Twin Lakes, Lake Geneva and Elkhorn.

Old Settlers Oktoberfest, meanwhile, enters its ninth year with all proceeds going toward financing a band shelter at the Kenosha County Park.

Rebecca Lancour, owner of Westosha Floral, has coordinated the day’s activities since it started.

The annual event was founded by Heidi Schuerstedt, who succumbed to leukemia in 2017, but Lancour and other business leaders plan to keep the event going in her memory.

“It started as a customer appreciation party back in the day.

Her vision was to just celebrate this little town, celebrate some local businesses, celebrate our customers and that is what we try to do,” she said. “In her memory, we try to keep it as traditional as possible.”

In keeping with the tradition, Old Settlers Oktoberfest, which will run from noon until 8 p.m., features the Ed Wagner Brass Band, German dance group D’Oberlanders, Dachshund Dash, a stein hoisting competition, German street organs, among others.

In addition, the event offers children’s games, German beer and wine, a classic car show, kids tractor train rides along with three new features in 2019.

The new features include a noon Hofbrau ceremonial keg tapping, a magician and chainsaw carving demonstrations.

While Lancour indicates the keg tapping ceremony is a great way to open the event, the magician came after feedback from patrons who sought more activities for older children.

“I had asked some people in the crowd last year what they would like to see; they had said they would want more things for children that aren’t so young, so something for the tween age,” Lancour said about the

As for other activities, Lancour said the stein hoisting competition and Dachshund Dash always brings a large crowd, adding winners receive prizes in both contests.

The Dachshund Dash, which is a race featuring wiener dogs, is sponsored by Kenosha County Park.

“People just love it. It is just packed. Everyone goes over there for the races and is a huge draw,” Lancour said about the Dachshund Dash.

The huge crowd, however, would not be possible without community sponsors and volunteers who help make Oktoberfest a free event.

“I think the most important would be the sponsors, because they are what keep the event going,” said Lancour, noting they contribute raffle prizes.

“We can’t do it alone, that is for sure. Volunteers do a little bit of everything. There are people that help with parking to keep everybody safe. We have volunteers that run the children’s games. Volunteers are really important.”

Lancour, however, estimates anywhere from 4,000 to 5,000 attend annually, and it has grown every year.

“It gets a little bigger every year,” she said. “The people are really great.

It is such a fun day. As long as we have good weather, you can’t beat it.”

Oktoberfest continues…

Oktoberfest fun continues with the Twin Lakes Area Chamber and Business Association hosting its event Oct. 12 in the pavilion of Twin Lakes Country Club, 1230 Legion Drive, Twin Lakes.

The second annual event features a Hammerschlaggen contest and an opportunity to win up to $1,500 based on how many tickets are sold, costume contest, music, beer stein holding contest as well as a scarecrow contest.

Cost to attend is $50 and includes

a raffle ticket.

In Walworth County, Wis. the streets of Lake Geneva plan to deliver Oktoberfest for two days, running from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12, and Sunday, Oct. 13.

“There is something for everyone at this family-friendly event – bounce houses, pony rides, craft fair, live entertainment, a free pumpkin giveaway, cider donuts and plenty more,” the VisitLakeGeneva.com website states.

The event is located in the heart of downtown Lake Geneva near the 200 block of Broad Street.

A week later, the Elkhorn Area Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Center Inc. is hosting its 13th annual Oktoberfest from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Veterans and Pocket parks.

In addition, Elkhorn will have an enhanced wine and beer-tasting event from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Pocket Park on Wisconsin Street.

“The kids will have plenty to keep them occupied with games, bounce house, slides and more,” the Elkhorn Chamber website states. “Enjoy all the different live entertainment acts from local groups like Toe to Toe Ballet, the Walworth County Cloggers, Elkhorn Flying Dragons, Dreams Studio of Performing Arts and music from our Live Band.”

Close to fruition

Old Settlers Oktoberfest, a nonprofit organization since 2014, is close to achieving its goal of financing a band shelter.

The organization currently has about $70,000, just $30,000 short of achieving its objective.

“We are getting close,” Lancour said, adding that construction costs are not included in the projection.

The band shelter, according to Lancour, was an idea conceived by Schuerstedt and former Kenosha County Parks Director Jonathan Rudie.

“She just thought it would be a great thing to have something that would be in the community for a long time,” said Lancour, adding it will be available to any group willing to deliver music.

Thousands attend

Because the event does not charge admission, including parking, organizers said accounting for attendance is difficult.

The Lake County Health Department’s Animal Care and Control program is offering its final low-cost pet vaccination and microchip clinics of 2019. The clinics provide a convenient and affordable way for Lake County residents to keep their pets up to date with shots, rabies tags, and microchips.

• Grayslake Police Department Vaccination Clinic: September 7, 9:00 a.m. to noon at Village of Grayslake Building (10 South Seymour Avenue, Grayslake).

• Beach Park Vaccination Clinic: October 5, 9:00 a.m. to noon at Milton C. Jensen Public Works Facility (40185 Glendale Avenue, Beach Park).

discovered one of the parties involved in the dispute, Brian O. Harper, 45, of the 3100 block of West Grandville Avenue, Waukegan, had an active felony arrest warrant for driving on a revoked driver’s license and a felony failure to appear arrest warrant for aggravated fleeing and eluding.

As Sheriff’s Deputies approached the residence, Harper barricaded himself inside. The female who dialed 911 regarding the dispute, was able to exit the residence before Harper barricaded himself. As Sheriff’s Deputies communicated with Harper from outside the residence, he taunted them, telling Sheriff’s Deputies to kick in the door and come get him.

After two hours of negotiating with Harper, he agreed to open the door and surrender. He was then observed

by Sheriff’s Deputies opening a garage service door, but quickly shut it and retreated back into the house. Sheriff’s Deputies breached the door and Harper continued to resist. Harper was tased and taken into custody without

further incident.

Harper was transported to the Lake County Jail where in addition to his arrest warrants, he was charged with: Criminal Damage to Property and Resisting a Peace Officer.

Harper is currently being held at the Lake County Jail on $150,000 bail.

On September 1, at approximately 11:05 a.m., Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to 5 Star Firearms, 41666 North Sheridan Road, Unincorporated Zion, for a report of a man shot.

Preliminary investigation shows an individual, believed to be a 49-year-old man of Riverdale, Georgia, entered the facility, rented a firearm, and proceeded to the on-site range. Video surveillance shows the man then shot himself, in what appears to be an intentional act. His injuries were life-threatening, and he was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Deputy Brian Kilpatrick and Explosive Detection K-9 Boomer returned home from a national canine competition with five first-place national titles and one third-place national title.

The 20th annual Vohne Liche Kennels Certifications and Trials, also known as the ‘K9 Olympics,’ took place from August 18-23 in Denver, Indiana. Each year, canine teams from as far away as Brazil, and as close to home as Arlington Heights, including Department of Defense Special Forces, State and local police departments, sheriff’s offices, and private contract K-9 teams, come together to test the handler’s abilities and the K-9’s skills in explosive detection and patrol work.

While at the largest ‘K-9 Olympics’ in the country, canine teams were able to complete the mandated canine certification recognized by the State of Illinois. 130 individual canine teams participated in this five-day

Convicted felon indicted after selling firearms to undercover detectives

The Lake County Sheriff’s Special Investigations Group (SIG) recently concluded a five-month investigation which led to the arrest of a documented street gang member, who is a convicted felon, Damond Martin, 28, of the 1000 block of West Losey Road, Galesburg.

In November of 2018, Martin sold an undercover SIG Detective a semi-automatic firearm with an obliterated serial number. In April of 2019, Martin sold an undercover SIG Detective a MAC-11 semi-automatic firearm. Both sales occurred in Waukegan.

Following the investigation, an arrest warrant was obtained, and Martin was arrested on August 2. At that time, he was charged with two counts of Unlawful Sale of a Stolen Firearm (Class 2 Felony and Class 4 Felony).

On August 28, the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office presented several charges to a Lake County Grand Jury regarding this case. The Grand Jury issued the following indictments on Martin: Armed Habitual Criminal (four counts – Class X Felonies); Unlawful Use of a Weapon by a Felon (six counts – Class 2 Felonies); Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon (two counts – Class 2 Felonies); Unlawful Delivery of a Firearm (one count – Class 2 Felony); Unlawful Delivery of a Firearm (two counts – Class 4 Felonies).

Martin remains held on $100,000 bail.

Officer injured during traffic stop On Tuesday, Aug. 27 a member of the Fox Lake Police Department was injured while conducting a traffic stop on Rollins Road and Maple Ave. A 65-year-old female driving a 2004 Hyundai traveling westbound

on Rollins failed to yield to a squad car which was conducting a traffic stop. This resulted in the female rear-ending the patrol car and injuries were sustained by both the driver of the Hyundai and the officer.

Both were transported to a local area hospital and the vehicles sustained substantial damage and were towed from the scene.

Lake County Sheriff’s Office was notified and is handling the crash investigation.

mental health and substance abuse. The keynote speaker will be Dese’Rae L. Stage, who is an artist, public speaker, and suicide education activist.

powers of Hope, Empowerment and Recovery.

Elderly widow accepts help during transition Dear W.C., I am worried about my elderly neighbor. I think she is having a hard time financially. Her home is rundown and needs upkeep.

She also has a cat that does not look well to me. I have offered to drive her and the cat to the vet, but she said she could not afford to go.

She really loves her cat, so I am worried that if she cannot afford her cat’s medical care she may be cutting back on other important things, too.

I offered to help her around the house, but the most she will accept is if I take out her trash or drop off an occasional plate of food. I told her about your organization and she told me she couldn’t ask anyone for help. From what I can tell she needs your help.

he had gotten lost after one episode. The elderly woman finally put him in a home and shared with the neighbor that his care had come at a high cost.

“I have seen a continual decline in the exterior of her home,” the letter writer said. “I think her gas may be off because she told me her oven is not working. I also am worried about her cat … it has become extremely thin and weak.”

The neighbor said the elderly woman knew she had written to The Time Is Now to Help. I told her about our veterinary assistance program and how some people donate specifically for pet care.

“But most of our donors donate to help people like you, people who are living on a fixed income and maybe are having a hard time paying their utilities or paying for food.”

Once she knew more about our charitable work she seemed ready to accept a helping hand. We went over her expenses and income.

She told me about her husband’s long, expensive battle with dementia.

She cried as she told me about how she missed his companionship and her feeling of loss when he no longer recognized her.

Then she told me about the terrible night he shoved

her aside and pushed his way out the door. He had become disoriented and lost outside.

When she and the neighbor finally found him, he was scared and didn’t know who they were.

He had been put in a memory care facility because she could not safely care for him any longer. The cost of for the remaining two years of his life emptied their savings account, leaving her only Social Security to live on. This was not enough for her property taxes, utilities, insurance, medical bills, food and veterinary care.

She told me she had agreed to sell her home to her nephew. Considering the necessary repairs the offer seemed fair.

She would have a small savings left to help pay future expenses once her debts were paid. But her nephew could not purchase the home for two months, so she still needed help.

She told me about a nearby apartment that allowed cats. She had filled out an application and had been on a waiting list for some time.

Her natural gas had been

disconnected two months ago when she had to choose between her prescriptions and her utilities. She also was struggling to pay for electricity.

I noted her food insecurity.

“When my neighbor drops off a plate I like to make it last a few days. If there is chicken or fish I share it with my cat. Then I have canned soup or cereal for a few days.”

I called a volunteer who picked up some food for this sweet woman. I also asked the volunteer to bring some cat food.

I called the veterinarian and they said they would see her cat for a reduced rate if Time Is Now was paying.

I asked the woman if she needed a ride but she said she would ask her neighbor.

I went over our list of assistance: We would pay her overdue gas utilities and have them reconnected and for her overdue electric bill. We would provide emergency food and grocery gift cards. We provided toiletries and promised a new bed when she moved into her new apartment. We also would provide her first month’s rent and security

deposit when she was ready to move to ensure she would get the apartment she had applied for.

By the end of the week the elderly woman’s utilities were restored and her food insecurity was a thing of the past. With the medications from the vet and a steady diet, her cat will live out the rest of her time in comfort.

Her application for the apartment was approved within six weeks and the first month’s rent and security deposit were provided.

Her nephew and his wife came from out of town to help her pack and move her belongings before they purchased her home.

The elderly woman was relieved to no longer worry about the expense and stress of taking care of an older home. She didn’t have to skip meals or miss paying utility bills to pay her taxes.

She had access to weekly transportation for groceries and had a social life with other senior citizens.

Unassuming heroes fight many battles in life Many (lucky) daughters see their dad as heroes. I’m no exception.

He’s a modest guy, my dad. The polar opposite of ostentatious. A regular Joe – fitting because that’s his name. He wouldn’t like the idea of me calling him a hero, much less writing about it.

Good thing he doesn’t read this column.

He served in the military – as did each of his five brothers. He was the youngest of the boys in his family and a Marine. Some of his older brothers fought in World War II. He came along just in time

“You took what you needed,” my dad said.

And then he sighed and whispered, “War is hell.”

It is difficult for me to fathom, but it must have been a gruesome existence. And it lingers today. As of February 2019, 7,667 American soldiers lost in Korea are still unaccounted for.

Family folklore is an interesting thing. My sister and I never knew the story behind the Purple Heart, but somehow we came to believe our dad had been caught in the crossfire during battle and was hit by shrapnel in his leg.

I don’t remember anyone ever telling me this. It was a fact I somehow mysteriously knew. Family folklore. My dad didn’t talk about those times, and we followed suit because we understood it was a taboo subject so we continued to believe our own folklore.

Recently, however, he set the record straight.

“I wasn’t shot in the leg.”

My jaw must have dropped.

“It was in the head. It grazed me right here,” he said pointing to his temple.

“Half an inch difference and I would’ve been dead.”

And I never would have been born.

Between Korea and Alzheimer’s, my dad’s been through at least two wars in his lifetime. That’s two more than anyone should have to endure. Through it all he’s been steadfast, loyal and humble. Just a regular Joe. A hero. In my humble opinion we could use more like him.

Lake County Film Festival being hosted by CLC Film fans from throughout the Lake County and Chicago area are invited to the ninth Lake County Film Festival, hosted by the College of Lake County from Sept. 5-10.

This year’s festival features eight narrative features, seven documentary features and more than 70 short films.

The opening night features “QWERTY,” a 2010 romantic comedy, at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 5 in the Room A010 Auditorium on the Grayslake Campus. Filmed mostly in Lake County (including CLC), the story follows introverted “word-nerd” Zoe, whose life is turned upside down when she meets her emotional match in irascible weirdo Marty. Pronounced “charming, winning and sweet” by the late Chicago movie critic Roger Ebert, the film was produced by Nat Dykeman, who is also the festival organizer.

Viewing independent films

is an opportunity for area residents to see films that they don’t normally find at the multiplexes, Dykeman said.

“Indie films offer a chance to see things outside your normal prism and learn new things about other cultures,” he added. “Unlike mainstream films that cost millions to produce, indies typically are made for thousands of dollars, usually by people who have poured their heart, soul, energy and time into them.”

This year’s narrative features include “Olympia,” a struggling-artist drama; “Rendezvous in Chicago,” a comedic feature on the stages of a relationship; “Rich Kids,” a drama on low-income troubled teens pretending to be rich; and “Romance Analyst,” a romance/drama about a depressed filmmaker who becomes enamored with her therapist.

Documentary features include “Art Paul of Playboy: The Man Behind the Bunny,” a profile of the magazine’s founding art director; “The

City That Sold America,” a look at Chicago’s advertising industry in the early 20th century; and “Pizza, A Love Story,” an examination of the Italian-American heritage in New Haven, Conn. that includes three iconic pizza joints.

The festival’s diverse selection of short films range in length from four to 50 minutes, Dykeman said. These include “Swipe Right,” a humorous look at modern dating; “Hook Up 2.0”, a sarcastic look at contemporary gender norms; and “Hitchhiking to the Edge of Insanity,” in which an idealistic writer and photographer set out to find their purpose via a terrifying road trip across the Sahara Desert in the early 1970s.

Additionally, “Terrolun and Lunlun,” is a Japanese drama in which a socially withdrawn teenage boy who live in his parents’ garage meets a hearing-impaired, high-schoolage girl. The film’s director and producer, both from Japan, plan to attend the festi-

val, Dykeman noted.

The festival’s closing night features “5/25/77,” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10 in the Room A011 Auditorium at the Grayslake Campus.

Filmed in Lake County, the 2017 comedic drama chronicles filmmaker Pat Johnson’s epic story of growing up in rural Illinois, falling in love and becoming the first fan of the original “Star Wars” movie, now known as “Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope.”

Dykeman said the support from CLC has been critical to making the festival successful. “The college’s auditorium and lecture halls are designed for films, and having excellent facilities, with clear sight lines, is a key component to make the festival a success,” he said.
