Corn is a favorite summer crop in Illinois. It is easily grown throughout the state and has been for the entire 200 years of Illinois’ existence. It is enjoyed by young and old people alike, especially when eating it directly off the cob after it is cooked on the outdoor grill. A summer outdoor barbecue is not complete without some fresh sweet corn cooked in its husk on the grill. Add some butter, salt and pepper and enjoy. For the very young and the elderly, it may be necessary to cut the kernels off the cob for easier eating but for those in between, it is the pleasure of eating it directly from the cob that adds to its enjoyment. The corn we know today is far different than the corn of old having been cultivated and developed over centuries. It is a human invention that is planted and grown which does not exist naturally in the wild. It survives by being planted each year and cultivated by farmers and gardeners. The story of corn goes back about 7,000 years, when it is believed that the people in Mexico developed it from a wild grass known as Teosinte. The early Mesoamericans turned this grass into a far different plant, which became known as maize, by selective breeding and cultivation. It took some time for botanists, archaeologists and

Celebrate Halloween with a haunted hayride and bonfire The Lindenhurst Parks District

will have its “Haunted Trail and Bonfire” event from 3 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13, at Lindenhurst Park District’s Lippert Community Center, 2200 East Grass Lake Road, Lindenhurst. There will be train rides, costume contests, performers, food, games and more during the event. The little ones will enjoy the inflatable pumpkin bounce house, games and face painter, while the brave ones can walk through the haunted trail. Times and costs of each activity are as follows: • Train rides will be from 3 to 7 p.m. and the cost is $2 or four tickets. • Costume contests will be at 3:30 p.m. and prizes will be awarded for age groups two to four, five to seven, eight to ten and 11 to 13. • Cornstalk Stage will have free performers throughout the whole evening including Kevin Farris, Chris Fascione, Balloon Dude Dale, Miss Jamie’s Farm and Jason the Juggler. • Haunted Trail will be open from 6 to 8 p.m. and is $1 or two tickets per person each time through. The Haunted Trail may be too scary for little children. Guests will enter the trail thorough the demon at the main entrance in the upper parking lot. The Witches Kitchen will have hot dogs, nachos and more. Tickets to the kitchen will be available at the ticket tent. For more information, go to www.lindenhurstparks.org.
