Antioch police department joins A Way Out program

CLC Theatre presents its fall children’s show ‘The Little Prince’ The College of Lake County Theatre department presents its fall children’s play “The Little Prince,” at 10 a.m. Thursday and Friday, Sept. 26 and 27; at 4 and 7 p.m.

Saturday, Sept. 28; and at 2 p.m.

A beloved children’s classic, “The Little Prince” has enchanted both children and adults alike for 75 years. It is the story of a world-weary aviator whose malfunctioning plane strands him in the middle of the Sahara Desert.

There, he meets an imaginative boy who claims to hail from an unknown star. The Little Prince delights the aviator with stories of his adventures and teaches him the secret of what is really important in life.

The play, by Rick Cummins and John Scoullar, is adapted from the book of the same name by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. “There

is good reason why ‘The Little Prince,” has become such a lasting and beloved novel over the decades, worldwide, for children and adults alike,” said Alicia Hall, adjunct theatre professor who is directing the play. “There is a truth that children know but adults all too often forget, that ‘what is essential is invisible to the eye’. This is at the heart of this classic novel and loving stage adaptation. Come with us as we go on an imaginative journey through the desert and the stars with a young guide who reminds us all of the transformational power of seeing the world, and one another, through our hearts.”

Two more police departments have signed on as participants in Lake County’s A Way Out program to help individuals with substance use disorders access the care they deserve.

Police departments in Antioch and Wauconda have become the latest law enforcement agencies to join in “A Way Out.” People struggling with a substance use disorder may now go to those police departments to ask for help and get connected to treatment and recovery resources.

Lake County State’s Attorney Michael G. Nerheim said, “We are extremely honored and proud to have police departments in Antioch and Wauconda join us in this important program. It shows they are committed to reducing substance use across their communities.”

Moraine Hills State Park will be hosting the Run for the Hills races on Saturday, Sept. 28. The run traverses beautiful rolling terrain through woodland, prairie, and marsh of the state park south of McHenry, Illinois.

Three marked courses – 5K, 10K and half marathon are set completely within the park on crushed limestone, and occasional asphalt, trails.

Friendly volunteer course marshals and water station attendants are along the course to cheer and support the runners.

Walkers are welcome in the 5K & 10K. The half marathon is runners only. Course support closes at 11:30 am.

Established in 2010, the run supports the park through Friends of Moraine Hills State Park, a 501(c)(3) membership organization.

Enjoy nature at its finest Chain O’Lakes State Park offers fun for all

Looking to take advantage of the beautiful summer weather and spend time enjoying a mini vacation? Chain O’Lakes State Park offers a variety of activities for your whole family, so close to home it makes a single day outing or weekend camping trip easily accessible.

Located in the northeastern corner of Illinois in both Lake and McHenry counties, and bordered by Wilmot Road and Illinois Highway 173, the 2,800-acre state park with its adjoining 3,200-acre conservation area makes it large enough that there is always some interesting activity to enjoy.

The park became a state park, named in 1946 with an initial purchase of 849 acres.

By 1957, it was able to expand its size with the incorporation of land that was the home of the Civilian Conservation Corps camp founded in the 1930s.

Further growth occurred in 1969 when the Department of Conservation purchased the acreage, which was known as the Stevens Farm. The Stevens family originally received the property in 1843 as a land grant.

The park contains a diverse blend of open prairie, and heavily wooded areas with beautiful trees that form canopies over the trails and roads through the area, including the 44-acre Turner Lake.

Imagine a day at the park with a variety of outdoor activities for every member of the family to enjoy. Start by bringing a picnic lunch and enjoy one of the pleasant picnic areas to enjoy time with family or friends while you enjoy your lunch.

There are seven picnic areas each equipped with tables, water, grills, and toilets. Three of the areas – Oak Grove, Maple Grove and Oak Point – have playground equipment on site that will keep the kids busy for hours.

Four of the groves – Oak Point, Deer Path, Oak Grove and Catfish Cove – have picnic shelters that will protect from sun or rain. The use of these shelters requires a reservation, and a $25 fee, which can be made on line at www. reserveamerica.com.

Groups of 25 or more who wish to picnic in the park must secure advanced written permission from the Park Office.

Fox Waterway Agency’s user fees. There is no horsepower limitation on boats using the Chain O’Lakes. Only trolling motors may be used on Turner Lake.

Don’t have a boat? Rent a kayak or a canoe at the rental station and enjoy time on the water while getting in some exercise. The concession stand will supply boats, fishing equipment, bait and camping supplies along with soft drinks and everyone’s favorite summer treat – ice cream.

Fishing is a favorite activity on the Chain because of the variety of fish found in the lakes. The most popular fish include bluegill, large mouthed bass, walleye, crappie, Muskie, northern pike, catfish and yellow and white bass.

“We offer guided trail rides for those seven years of age and older ranging from 40 minutes to 2 hours in length. The horses and riders are paired to accommodate the rider’s ability, size, and horse’s temperament. We also offer pony rides for children under 7 years of age,” Weringer said.

“With 28 horses available, no horse is ever overworked.

There are enough horses to allow a rest between rides,” she added.

In the past there were also wagon rides available.

“We don’t offer wagon rides at the present time but we are looking for an appropriate wagon that can be used for the rides. Hopefully by next season we will be able to institute these rides,” Weringer said.

Camping While a day trip to the park is enjoyable, spending a night or two at the campgrounds makes the experience a vacation. The Chain O’Lakes Park offers a large number of campsites, which can be as rustic or as high end as one wishes it to be.

Looking for a campsite with as many amenities as possible? The Class A Premium areas are just the campsites for you. Located in Honey Suckle Hollow and Fox Den, there are a total of 151 sites which rent at a cost of $25 per night except for holidays.

Memorial Day, Independence Day (July 4), and Labor Day weekends the fee is raised another $10. The sites have electricity, disposal stations, flush toilets and shower houses. Pitch your tent or bring in your camper.

A more economical and

more rustic way to camp is to stay at one of the three Class B Premium camp areas. The park has 87 of these campsites at Turner Lake South, Prairie View, and Mud Lake East.

The sites have water available, vault toilets and access to showers. They are more economical renting at $12 each per night.

For Pat and Al Harrison, camping with their family is a frequent summer event.

“We try to come out every few weeks for a day or two either here or at one of the other campgrounds we enjoy,” Pat Harrison said. “Disconnecting and spending time with nature is good for all of us.”

Bringing a group of youngsters to camp in the park? The youth group camp area, which accommodates up to 150 youth, is available at only $2 per person per night. Adults must accompany the group. Advance registration is needed for the youth group camp.

If you are new to camping, try one of the three cabins available. Each cabin has two bunk beds and a double bed.

The cabin includes electricity, a table and six chairs, a picnic table, a charcoal grill, a dustpan and broom and a fire extinguisher. No restroom facilities are provided in the cabin.

Dogs and other pets are not allowed at the cabin site. The cabins cost $50 per night.

Childhood difficult no matter if you’re oldest, youngest or in the middle By

purchased. Parents worry and fret about anything and everything. They hover sometimes incessantly. This can cause stress for parents and baby.

Oldest children have to pave the way for others.

They must be courageous and brave. They are the first to climb the big steps of the school bus – alone. When they mess up, and all kids do, it is a first for their parents and treated like it is the end of the world, or at least the end of a good day.

They have the responsibility of training new parents, and just when things are getting comfortable, another baby comes along and divides the parental attention the first-born finally has gotten used to.

Perhaps being the oldest child isn’t easy at all. Maybe it’s the hardest spot to own.

The logic is obvious then; the middle child has it the

easiest.

The middle child does not have to experience the hovering and overattentiveness of newbie parents. No one stresses over sanitizing everything, even and especially the pacifier. Daily activities are more streamlined. Seasoned parents realize they don’t need every baby gadget and gizmo available on Amazon.

This actually makes life easier for everyone.

Mom and dad understand this baby thing and have learned to trust their gut with the middle child. They have learned to work together and are more relaxed, and baby picks up on this. Relaxation is a good thing for both parents and baby.

The middle child has an older sibling to watch and learn from physically, socially and emotionally.

There are lots of interesting toys in the house because of said older sibling.

Then again, while interesting to watch, the new baby has to share parent time with their older sibling. And older siblings might express jealously on occasion. Parents might not notice because they are in the new state of experienced and

relaxed parenting. Pacifiers get misplaced and even lost.

This isn’t easy for baby.

Perhaps being the middle child isn’t the easiest at all.

Perhaps it’s better described as hard.

So then, we are left with the one option: The youngest child has it the easiest.

Life for the youngest child is never boring. He has two or more siblings to entertain him day and night.

They’ve already paved the way and he has the easy job of following in their footsteps.

Parents are now outnumbered, which makes them too tired to helicopter, much less restrict.

It’s likely there are treats in the house not available to prior children, and the youngest is introduced to Twinkies and chocolate chips at a much earlier age than older siblings.

However, the activities and abilities of older siblings could make a baby frustrated: “Why can’t I do those things, too?” Outnumbering your parents means someone has to wait for their pacifier to be cleaned. (Who cleans pacifiers anymore at this point?) Parents no longer jump out of bed because of a

whimper. They have learned the importance of having babies sleep through the night.

The last-born child wears hand-me-down clothes that may be well-worn and not-quite perfect anymore.

Toys are far from new and sometimes broken or not in working condition. Older siblings pave the way; this can be good or bad. It’s hard to live up to a firstborn’s stellar performance or the opposite of that. Older siblings can serve to define the youngest child, and that could feel restricting.

Perhaps being the youngest child isn’t easy after all. Perhaps it is hard.

Which leaves me confused. I can see the pros

and cons of each place in the birth order. Who has it best?

Who has it worst?

Depends on who you are and how you see it. It’s the whole glass half something dilemma – full or empty, take your pick. None of us chooses our birth order, but whether firstborn, middle child or youngest, we all have the power to choose how we perceive it.

Operation Drop Box, a campaign to gather household goods for veterans, began collecting donations September 9. McHenry County Department of Health (MCDH) is joining forces with partners Country Financial, McHenry County Division of Transportation (McDOT), McHenry County Veterans Assistance Commission (VAC), TLS Veterans, and volunteers from the McHenry County Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) in asking community members to donate requested items that will help give county veterans a boost.

Beginning September 9 and continuing until October 21, new and unused items such as non-perishable food and new socks can be dropped at locations throughout the county. Volo Bog is looking for volunteers to haunt the wood for their Ghost Stories event on Saturday, Oct. 12.

Haunting volunteers will be needed from 3-7:15 pm which includes set-up and cleanup time. Volunteers must also attend one orientation session by appointment before the event.

Trail guardians and group leaders are also needed to help regulate the flow of participants.
