Blue Chip Regatta returns home Pistakee to host event this weekend
By Sandra Landen Machaj CORRESPONDENT
On Saturday Sept. 16, Pistakee Lake expects to see some of the best sailors guiding their sailboats around the buoys placed strategically in the lake to designate the race route. For members of the Pistakee Yacht Club, the sight looks to bring more than 50 years of memories, when the Blue Chip Regatta was held here yearly on the second weekend after Labor Day. The Blue Chip Regatta was the brainstorm of Rear Commodore John Looze and Drs. Alex and Ralph Pomierski in 1960. They approached the Board of the Pistakee Yacht Club, which the three were long-term members, and suggested that the club sponsor a post season regatta inviting only a limited number of top sailors from that season.
To be certain that the Board would look favorably on their suggestion, they offered to underwrite any losses that might occur, and if the regatta was profitable, the profits would go to the Club. Thus, it was quickly approved and the Regatta has been held annually on the second weekend after Labor Day. Since then, Looze made adjustments to the sailors who would be invited to the regatta. It was an invitational regatta with invitations issued to the top sailors of the Inland Yachting Association (ILYA) sailing C-Scows and other prestigious races specifically for C-scows. Invited sailors were limited to 25. The C-Scow was the popular sailing boat of the time. Originally developed in 1905 by the Johnson Boatworks of White Bear Lake, Minn., it was built of wood, had a flat bottom and measured 20-feet
