Artwork transforms downtown Fox Lake wall What was just another unremarkable brick business sidewall has metamorphosed into a largerthan-life American White Pelican against a lakefront backdrop dappled with blue, gray and green hues.

It’s the eye-catching work of veteran muralist Elaine Poulos Sinclair of McHenry. Motorists can see the great Audubon-inspired bird boldly gazing at oncoming traffic as they head west on Grand Avenue just east of the Route 12 intersection. The 13-foot4-inch-high, 26-foot-wide artwork is painted on the western wall of the Lakes Realty building, just across from the Whistle Stop Café in Fox Lake, Illinois.

“It is color-matched to a John James Audubon painting,” said Sinclair, a 1980s fine arts graduate of Northern Illinois University. “The village was looking for a vintage postcard vibe.”

Sinclair started working on the mural July 8 after her concept was approved by the Village of Fox Lake, which has procured grants and hired several artists to create public works downtown. Working carefully to avoid high-humidity hours as well as direct sunlight as she dipped her brushes into Benjamin Moore exterior paints, she completed the mural July 26. “Paint does not adhere well in high humidity,” she explained, adding that the business owner, Pat Smarto, invested in prepping the wall.

“This is very cool what Fox Lake and local business owners are doing, investing in the arts for all to enjoy,” Sinclair said. “I would love to do more of this.”

Sinclair has been creating murals for residential and business clients since the early 1990s. Her work adorns doctor’s and dentist’s offices as well as corporate professional spaces, including a largescale work for Paylocity’s Arlington Heights offices.

Another outdoor work — a fierce American Eagle — graces an outdoor storage building at McHenry VFW Post 4600.

“The nicest part is the reactions of people,” Sinclair said. “What I love hearing is ‘It’s better than what I thought it would be,’ or ‘It’s just what I wanted.’”

Department and Community Health Center is pleased to announce that 1,234 Lake County community members have been trained in Mental Health First Aid, an 8-hour course that helps people identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. Both the Health Department and community partners contributed to accomplishing this milestone.

In October 2018, the Health Department received a grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to help expand and improve Lake County’s Mental Health First Aid training initiatives. Through the grant, the Health Department is training 30 individuals per year to become Adult Mental Health First Aid instructors. In turn, those individuals will train 2,250 community members over a three-year period.

“Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S. and in Lake County—this issue touches us all,” said Sam Johnson-Maurello, the Health Department’s Director of Behavioral Health. “Through Mental Health First Aid, we can help end the stigma around mental health and equip members of our community with resources to help their neighbors, friends, and loved ones before it’s too late.”

The weekend gets under way on Friday, Sept. 6 with the Black Light Bean Bag Toss. Registration begins at 5 p.m. and the tournament gets started at 7 p.m. Registration fee is $10 per person.

Wear something that will stand out in the black lights and have some fun!

Lion’s Club Banjo and Beer night will be Saturday, Sept. 7. Gates of the Johnsburg Community Club Fest Grounds open at 5 p.m. and live music starts at 6 p.m.

Food, beverages and a beer garden will be available.

Sunday kicks off with the Saufen und Spiel parade at noon starting at the Johnsburg Village Hall and ending at The Community Club.

The fest grounds will be filled with many local clubs and organizations serving all kinds of foods, treats and drinks. There will be rides, games and fun for the entire family.

Music starts at 1 p.m. and stick around for the Cow Drop Raffle at 4:00 p.m.

Slices of life

Watching birds could teach us many things about daily life I never used to consider myself a bird watcher.

But this summer I’ve had various species of birds cross my path. And while they all fly (I haven’t seen any ostriches or penguins), the manner in which they fly differs greatly from bird type to bird type.

Ducks are great swimmers; the same can’t be said about flying. Oh, sure, they do fly, but they work very hard at it. The effort required is great.

They stick their necks out (literally) and flap their wings with rapid voracity in order to stay air-bound.

Watching them fly – and expend such great energy – requires energy. When they land on the water and re-enter their element of swimming, I nearly breathe a sigh of relief.

Like ducks, loons do quite a bit of swimming – and diving at depths up to 200 feet in order to secure

supper (fish). They fly at speeds up to 80 mph, but taking off is difficult, in part because their bones are not hollow, like most other birds.

Hummingbirds, on the average, flap their wings about 50 times per second.

You read that right. They work hard to stay in-flight, but you wouldn’t know it. They make it look effortless. They hover more than fly.

Ostriches don’t fly, but they can run. Oh boy can they run – at speeds of over 40 mph. That’s faster than a camel, but who’s counting?

Penguins don’t run and they don’t fly. I’ve

never seen a penguin in the wild but find them fascinating. Their strengths (as I see it) are loyalty and steadfastness. A daddy penguin goes months without eating in order to protect and keep the egg holding his baby warm.

Eagles don’t swim, but they also don’t fly – not exactly. They mostly soar, which is an upgraded version of flying. They flap their wings, occasionally but they are situated so high in the sky that the wind currents aid their airborne existence.

Ducks flap-fly, loons are good fliers once air bound, hummingbirds hover, ostriches and penguins never leave the ground and eagles soar. We all can see the analogy here.

Some people are like ducks. They expend great amounts of energy in order to do something they weren’t really meant to do,

while ignoring the skill set they were born with – in the case of ducks, swimming.

They can fly, but they’ll never be great at it. It always will require great flapping, great energy and great sticking out of one’s neck.

Some people are like loons. They have difficulty taking off, but when they do they can move forward at great speeds. In addition, they shouldn’t ignore their real skills (in the case of the loon diving) because that’s where the food comes from.

Some people, like hummingbirds, may appear small, but in reality they are capable of great things – like making flight look as effortless as hovering.

Hummingbirds think outside the box. I admire this creativity. Hummingbirds could see themselves as tiny and relatively powerless; instead they maximize their potential.

Ruck March of Lake County planned for Sept. 7

To honor our fallen Veterans, there is a patriotic 22-kilometer march carrying a 20+ pound ruck (backpack). The weight in the rucksack symbolizes the daily loss of life as well as the emotional and physical weight carried by those struggling with a lack of hope.

Registration check in is at 8:00 a.m. with the walk starting at 10:00 a.m. from Daisy’s Artish Care, 216 North Milwaukee, Lake Villa.

Funds from the event will be donated to the Lake County Veterans and Family Services Foundation, a local nonprofit dedicated to reducing the amount of time it takes for a service member to ask for help.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office is pleased to announce the graduation of Telecommunicator Brendhan Sears from the prestigious Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) Registered Public-Safety Leader certification course.

This intense year-long program, broken into sixmodules, provides advanced levels of instruction on how to supervise and manage public safety telecommunicators. The curriculum included communicating with clarity, managing organization and change, developing the talent pool, building connections and consensus, fostering teamwork and collaboration, exploring APCO the organization, and a mandatory service project.

Telecommunicator Sears’ service project, Humanizing the Headset, is a blog/ Facebook Page he created where telecommunicators can share their personal experiences so the community can better understand the daily joys and stresses associated with the emergency telecommunicator profession.

Telecommunicator Sears received his certification at the 2019 APCO 85th Annual Conference. He will put his skills to use as a Telecommunications Training Officer, as he instructs new Telecommunicators on the essentials of the job and service to the community.

Nippersink Middle School is hosting a Color Fun Run and Fun Fair on Sunday, Sept.

This intense year-long program, broken into sixmodules, provides advanced levels of instruction on how to supervise and manage public safety telecommunicators. The curriculum included communicating with clarity, managing organization and change, developing the talent pool, building connections and consensus, fostering teamwork and collaboration, exploring APCO the organization, and a mandatory service project.

Telecommunicator Sears’ service project, Humanizing the Headset, is a blog/ Facebook Page he created where telecommunicators can share their personal experiences so the community can better understand the daily joys and stresses associated with the emergency telecommunicator profession.

Telecommunicator Sears received his certification at the 2019 APCO 85th Annual Conference. He will put his skills to use as a Telecommunications Training Officer, as he instructs new Telecommunicators on the essentials of the job and service to the community.

Resource tables from Lake County agencies covering topics such as mental health, physical health, counseling, aging, and community services will be available from 9:00 a.m.

Separation and divorce are painful and stressful experiences. It is a confusing time when you feel isolated and have many questions about issues you’ve never faced before.

The Divorce Care group at Faith Lutheran Church will meet Tuesdays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. beginning September 3 through November 19, to help you face these challenges and move toward rebuilding your life.

Session 1 on September 3 will help you answer the question, “Why do I feel the way I do?” You’ll leave the session with an overview of the Divorce Care program and an appreciation for the benefits of a support group environment.

Sheriff’s office hosting free Boating Safety Certification Class

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office will be hosting a free Boating Safety Certification Class on Saturday, Aug. 31 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Woodstock.

Illinois Boating Laws state that a Boating Safety Certificate is required for all boaters born on or after January 1, 1998, and who will be operating a vessel powered by a motor of more that 10 HP. After successfully passing this class, attendees will receive an Illinois Department of Natural Resources Boating Safety Certificate.

CLC, collaborators hosting PM&L Theatre holding auditions fall nature programs Explore nature, build creative writing skills and learn how a Midwestern nature lover broke gender barriers to become a renowned scientist in a series of fall events sponsored by the College of Lake County, in collaboration with local libraries and the Lake County Forest Preserve District.

Book discussions focus on “Lab Girl,” an award-winning autobiography of Hope Jahren, a Minnesota native who overcame gender stereotypes in science to become one of the world’s leading geobiologists. Growing up in Austin, Minn., Jahren was interested in trees, flowers, plants and soil since she was a child. “Lab Girl”tells the story of a young woman who finds friendship in odd places, battles bipolar disorder, perseveres through setbacks and becomes a respected scientist and passionate observer of the natural world. Jahren eventually earned a Ph.D. in soil science from the University of California at Berkeley in 1996 and now lives in Oslo, Norway. In 2016, “Lab Girl” was named a New York Times Notable Book and an Amazon

for the musical ‘Chess’

Auditions for “Chess,” the musical, will be held, by appointment, on Monday, Sept. 9, and Tuesday, Sept. 10, beginning at 7 p.m. Callbacks will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 10.

Auditions will be held at PM&L Theatre’s Tribute Hall, located at 877 Main Street in Antioch, IL. The director, Lorrie Ferguson (past PM&L credits include “Man of La Mancha” and “The Game’s Afoot”) is looking to cast a minimum of 19-20 cast members.

Principal characters (ages are stage ages): Florence – Strong belt voice (to E). Mid 30’s; Freddie – Rock tenor (to C). Mid 30’s; Anatoly – Baritone (to G -sharp). Early 40’s; Molokov – Bass (down to F-sharp). 50’s; Svetlana – Strong belt voice. Late 30’s; Walter – Bass-baritone (down to G-sharp). 50’s; Arbiter – Rock high baritone (up to A. 30 - early 40’s. Ensemble: Minimum 12 singers and dancers. Many will be multi-cast in various roles: Dancers, street people, press, waiters, patrons, conference vendors, etc.

The director is looking specifically for 4 strong dancers. Dancers will be seen at the callbacks on Wednesday.

Auditioners should prepare and memorize a 16 bar vocal selection in the style of the musical. Songs from the

show are encouraged. There may also be cold-readings from the script.

The collaborators on “Chess” are giants of rock music and rock musicals.

The music by Benny Anderson and Bjorn Ulvaeus (ABBA) of “Mamma Mia” fame, lyrics/concept by Tim Rice (“Evita,” “Aladdin,” “The Lion King”), and book by Richard Nelson. In Chess, the ancient game becomes a metaphor for romantic rivalries, competitive gamesmanship, super-power politics, and international intrigues. A love triangle forms: the loutish American chess star, the earnest Russian champion, and a Hungarian American female assistant who arrives at the international chess match in Bangkok with the American, but falls for the Russian.

From Bangkok to Budapest the players, lovers, politicians, and spies manipulate and are manipulated to the pulse of a monumental rock score that includes “One Night in Bangkok,” “Heaven Help My Heart,” and “I Know Him So Well.”

“Chess” opens on Friday, Nov. 8, and will run Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays until Sunday, Nov. 24. Actors should be available for four nights of rehearsal a week.

Treasurer Holly Kim worked with United Way of Lake County to help hundreds of Lake County school children be prepared with school supplies as they headed back to school through a drive called Stuff the Bus. Kim used the stipend she received from the State of Illinois to invest in our school children by purchasing 226 book bags.

The State of Illinois by statute is required to give each County Treasurer a stipend annually to compensate them for fulfilling duties required by the State. This stipend is in addition to the salary the County pays to the Treasurer.

“I did not run for this office to

increase my salary. When I received this stipend, I decided the best thing to do was to partner with United Way to help underserved children all over Lake County” Kim said.

Bobbi Selvik of United Way Lake County stated “This is our first year doing Stuff the Bus. We were hoping for 500 backpacks and to date have collected over 850!

Jazlyn and Treasurer Kim collected more back packs than any company, organization or individual.”

Joining Kim and the United Way in this effort was 10-year-old American Royal Spirit Hometown Ambassador Jazlyn Torres.

Jazlyn also collected supplies from four sites and collected an

additional $100.

United Way Lake County’s mission is to prepare children to succeed in a changing world by focusing on education and building safe and stable families.

The office of the treasurer collects property taxes from almost 300,000 parcels in Lake County and distributes them to local taxing bodies.

Newly elected Treasurer Holly Kim publicly believes in community reinvestment and was happy to partner with United Way Lake County.
