Festival-goers also brought about 50 bags of non-perishable food as well as toiletries and other items for the college’s SHARE market, which helps economically disadvantaged students, said Tammy Burns, student services specialist in the college’s Women’s Center. The market, located in Room B013 in the lower level on the Grayslake Campus, is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays during the summer.

Sheriff’s Office and A Safe Place form partnership to reduce domestic violence

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office and A Safe Place–Lake County are excited to announce a new partnership in an effort to reduce domestic violence.

With this new program a crisis responder from A Safe Place will spend one day a week working with Sheriff’s Office staff, following-up with victims of domestic violence stemming from incidents that Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to.

The purpose of this program is to provide victims of domestic violence with additional resources on the order of protection process, providing victim advocacy, safety planning, information on victims’ rights under the Illinois Domestic Violence Act, and options for other resources.

Additionally, the crisis responder will provide resource options for families dealing with domestic-related issues, even when no criminal act occurred.

Pat Davenport, CEO/Executive Director of A Safe Place-Lake County said, “A Safe Place is very grateful to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office for this collaboration in our fight against domestic violence and human trafficking.

Watching hundreds gather July 25 at the College of Lake County’s Grayslake Campus to enjoy snacks, a live band, car show and more as part of the college’s Community 50 Fest, Sylvia Landree, 83, reflected on CLC’s five-decade role in enhancing Lake County’s quality of life.

“The college always makes life better because it give more opportunities for people of all income levels,” said Landree, who earned an accounting certificate in the early ‘70s and advanced from bookkeeper to accountant for local construction companies.

She also has worked as a tutor at the Lakeshore Campus in Waukegan. In her retirement, Landree said she “loves” the college’s noncredit Discovery program, providing the 50+ age group with courses on diverse topics, from authors to current events.

Besides Landree, other attendees who came to celebrate CLC’s golden anniversary included Martha Mena, a Round Lake resident who earned an A.A.S. in early childhood education in 2014. Now an assistant director at a preschool, Mena said the “short commute” and CLC’s economical tuition attracted her. “Having this event, with all these attractions for the family, plus fireworks, is a great way to celebrate CLC’s

Sheriff’s Office wins Traffic Safety Challenge

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office was recognized on August 14 by the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police for first place in the Sheriff 101-250 sworn category in the Illinois Traffic Safety Challenge. This recognition occurred at the annual Illinois Traffic Safety Challenge Awards Ceremony in Tinley Park, Illinois.

The Illinois Traffic Safety Challenge, coordinated by the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police, is designed to challenge police departments to address traffic safety concerns in their jurisdictions in unique ways. Departments are judged in the following categories: policy, training, recognitions, public education, enforcement, and effectiveness. After reviewing the individual department’s accomplishments, the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police recognizes the law enforcement agencies in the state that were able to demonstrate exemplary traffic safety and enforcement programs.

“The Traffic Safety Challenge reaffirms just how important traffic safety education and enforcement are in protecting those on our roadways. We are very proud of the efforts of not only the traffic unit but the entire department as well.” Sheriff Bill Prim remarked.

Slices of life

We must all battle with the agony of ‘de-feet’ I enjoy going barefoot and dipping my feet into the lake during the summer. My husband and I experience our own version of a pedicure when we wade in a shallow sandbar and the minnows nibble on our toes.

It scared me at first – and grossed me out to be honest – to think they were eating on our toes. But it only tickles and is actually pleasant once you get used to the idea of a small fish treating your skin like a smorgasbord.

During the summer I become more aware of feet. It’s probably because they are more available and viewable during the height of sandal season.

This can be good or bad,

depending on the overall state of the feet within question or within view.

Feet are as different as the people walking atop of them. Some are short, some long. Some are wide, some narrow. Some are hairy, some bald. Some have polished toenails; others go for a more natural look.

Some are rather cute, others eye averting (ahem).

Like many things in life, my husband and I differ on

foot stance. We definitely are not feet twins; our toes are not even distantly related.

The height of my toes decreases from the tallest big toe to the shortest little toe in a uniform fashion. I am able to trim my toenails straight across because they grow straight and end straight. I have very neat and orderly feet. I wish the same could be said about the rest of my body and my life in general, but that’s another topic.

The length of my husband’s toes conjures up a one-word description: anarchy. There is no law, no order, no pattern of tidiness; it’s simple disarray. His toenails are not cut neatly straight across because they

do not grow neatly straight across. They are jagged and curved in places where jags and curves are unneeded and unwanted.

Yet he doesn’t care and is basically unaware of the chaos living under his ankles.

My husband doesn’t give much thought to his toes, which is a good thing because pondering the subject would likely bring about frustration.

What can a person do to change their toes? Not much besides polish, and it’s highly unlikely my husband would ever go there. No, you’ve got to work with the hand — or in this case foot — you’re dealt.

Despite the fact that I’m OK with the overall look of my feet in sandals, I realize

The Lake County Division of Transportation (LCDOT) is currently looking for volunteers to help pick up litter and debris along Lake County highways and bike paths.

Volunteers adopt a section of a county highway and commit to cleaning it twice a year. LCDOT provides the equipment (safety vests and bags), we just need you to provide the manpower. When your cleanup is done, LCDOT will collect your garbage bags and recycling bags from the side of the road.

An Adopt-A-Highway group should have at least eight to ten people to help with the workload, but you can have as many as you like. Participants must be ten or older, and

Racial Justice: Cheryl Hudson-Jackson, YWCA Lake County. Cheryl will talk about systemic racism as told through her experiences as a woman of color while helping us understand what racism looks like. She will show us how to identify stereotypes and learn the differences between bias, discrimination, and racism while increasing our awareness of our cultural differences. Her story will focus on the double burden of race and gender discrimination placed on women of color.

Ending Violence Against Women: Sandra Bankston, Victim Advocate for Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office. Sandra will speak to the stories of her clients who are dealing with various forms of violence including domestic violence, sexual assault, sexual harassment, gender bias in our political system, and the violence of poverty emphasized by attacks on poor women and children.

Equal Rights Amendment: Lisa Cherry, Gender Equity Fund. Lisa will address how pay equality, job opportunities, political structure, social security, and education will remain an elusive dream without a guarantee of equality in legislation and the U.S. Constitution.

The Round Lake High School Ghostlight Readers Theatre will also be performing A LOT to SAY, a new piece that weaves through history to the present with the words of visionaries, pioneers, those who refused to move aside, those who marched in the streets, those who continue the fight, and those who still need our help The program is free and open to the public, but registration is required. While the LCWC has been on hiatus during the summer, it doesn’t mean they have been idle. The are busy putting the finishing touches on our annual Women’s Equality Day program. Their celebration will be held at Warren-Newport Public Library on Thursday, Aug. 29, beginning at 6:00 p.m.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th amendment granting women the right to vote. In celebration of this event, we have assembled a panel of outstanding women who will speak to current issues surrounding women’s equality.

While tremendous strides have been made, there is still a long way to go toward achieving true equality for women. From Elizabeth Cady Stanton’s electrifying call for women’s rights in 1848 to the passionate outcries of women involved in the Women’s Marches of today, this program endeavors to put the issue of Women’s Equality into a culturally, historically, politically, and socially relevant context within the United States and beyond.

The panel of guests includes multi-generational voices from our community, telling their own stories as they relate to specific topics and includes the following speakers: Economic Equity: Barbara Richardson, the first female Lake County Deputy Coroner.

Barbara will share how she became Deputy Coroner in 1976 and the path she followed to be accepted and respected by her male counterparts, focusing on job discrimination and pay equity. She will illustrate the journey women are making from the sticky floor of poverty to breaking through the glass ceiling.

LGBTQ Rights: Joanne Rae, a member of the LGBTQ community. Joanne will emphasize the issues of reproductive justice and transgender discrimination while discussing the rights of LGBTQ individuals to live their lives with dignity and security. She will touch on discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in the areas of employment, housing, public

McHenry County Health Department warns of rabid bats McHenry County Sheriff’s arrest bulletin A bat that tested positive for rabies was recently found at a home in Woodstock. No human exposure was reported, although potential exposure to several dogs found playing with the bat is being taken into consideration.

Keeping pets (even those who stay indoors) up to date with vaccinations will not only keep them from getting rabies but also provide a barrier of protection for people if a rabid animal bites a pet.

“Never touch a bat with bare hands. Using a shovel or plastic bag ensures no direct contact. If a bat is found inside, contain it in a room by closing the door. If you find a bat outside and think there

has been exposure to a person or pet or if the bat is injured, place an upside down bucket over the bat if possible,” said Maryellen Howell, Manager of McHenry County Department of Health’s Veterinary Public Health Division. Call Animal Control immediately (815-459-6222) if you, a family member, or a pet has had direct contact with a bat. To test bats for rabies, it is important the bat be in good condition (i.e. head is intact) and either alive or recently deceased.

Rabies is a fatal disease caused by a virus that attacks the central nervous system and can only be confirmed by laboratory testing. The best way to avoid rabies is to avoid
