‘Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike’ running for two more weekends “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike” by Christopher Durang, directed

by Mark Badtke (director of PM&L Theatre’s productions of “Steel Magnolias” and “Meet Me in St. Louis”), opened last weekend and will run Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays until June 16th.

“Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike” won the 2013 Tony Award for Best Play. It tells the endearing and hilarious story of Vanya (Romeo Sobrepena) and Sonia (Lynn Homeier), two middleaged siblings who share a home in Pennsylvania with their psychic housekeeper, Cassandra (Renee Johnson), and spend their time bickering and complaining about their lives. They’re visited by their glamorous sister, Masha (Sara Shalom), who visits with her hunky new boyfriend, Spike (Michael Farca). Masha worries about the presence of the lovely Nina (Jamie Lee Cortese), an aspiring actress.

“Vanya and Sonia and

Masha and Spike” will run Fridays and Saturdays, June 7th, 8th, 14th, and 15th at 8 pm. Sunday matinee performances will be June 9th, and 16th at 2:30 pm.

Lake County property taxes first installment due June 6

The deadline to pay the first installment of Lake County property taxes is Thursday, June 6. Property owners are encouraged to learn more about their tax bill and become aware of the different ways to pay.

Each tax bill contains information that is used to determine the total amount due.

There is also information about tax distribution which shows property owners where their property tax dollars are going.

It’s important for property owners to familiarize themselves with their property tax bill so they can make sure it accurately reflects their property information and any exemptions they may qualify for.

While more than 99.7 percent of the 289,000+ tax bills Lake County sent were accurate this year, a few hundred taxpayers received inaccurate tax bills in early May. Working in partnership with property owners, the Chief County Assessment Office notified those that were

Four-month narcotics investigation leads to arrest

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Task Force arrested Raymundo Gomez, 23, of Woodstock on multiple drug charges after a four month narcotics investigation.

On May 22, 2019, the Narcotics Task Force, the U.S. M a r s h a l ’s Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force, the Raymundo Drug EnGomez forcement Administration (DEA) Rockford Office arrested Gomez on a warrant at his residence in the 1000 block of Greenwood Circle in Woodstock.

During the course of his arrest, illegal drugs were observed which led to a search warrant of his residence. As a result, additional charges were filed against Gomez. At

I exude power and control — while in the garden I look forward to getting out into the garden each spring.

I’ve never been able to define why or where the pull comes between Mother Earth and me, until this year. And it’s about more than dirtying my hands in her soil.

Last week I was outside in one of my gardens, pulling the weeds that always seem to trump the wanted plants at this time of year, or any time for that matter.

After pulling a very long and very satisfying taproot, the truth hit me. I felt happy. And in that moment, I finally knew why.

Gardening makes me feel strong. And I love that.

I don’t consider myself a weak person in any aspect of life. But I’m not necessarily strong either. I certainly don’t possess the biggest muscle mass or strength factor within my family. In that regard I am near the bottom. Heck I am at the bottom.

But not when it comes to gardening. There, I wield power. I am strong. Not only

strong, but the strongest, with an emphasis on the “est.”

Considering all the guys I live with, that’s saying something.

When I garden I move earth. I nurture plants and pull weeds. I fertilize. I make life and death decisions; I decide which plants will flourish where. That’s fairly powerful.

Minus the fairly.

I grab the shovel from the garage. The wooden handle feels solid and comfortable in my grip. It is smooth from years of use. I plunge the blade into the earth and pull forth dirt with the prowess of a garden pro. I sift it through my hands to remove the wheat from the chaff – or in this case, weeds from the dirt. I see the earthworms and am glad for their presence. Slugs – not so

much. They are relegated to the slug pile.

Confidence exudes from my dirty fingernails. It is simple business, but it is important, especially if you are a plant or a slug.

I fill the wheelbarrow with heaps and pounds of weeds and cart them to the mulch pile, dumping the refuse with a bold determination of a woman who knows how to handle a wheelbarrow and looks forward to harvesting asparagus later this week and raspberries later this summer.

I work carefully around the iris rhizomes and the oriental lilies emerging from the soil. I point them out to my husband.

He thinks the lilies look like asparagus. He isn’t wrong.

We look on Wiki and, indeed, asparagus was once classified in the lily family. But that has since changed and now has its own classification. (What did we do before the internet?)

The sun is shining and I appreciate the warmth. Later that evening I will be reminded of the sun again, as I look in

the mirror and see tan lines on my shoulders and arms. A farmer’s tan – the best kind there is.

When we are in the garden, my husband and sons – who are stronger than me in most of the ways we normally measure strength – look to me for direction. Pull this. Plant that.

Not here.

I provide guidance and supervision when they trim trees or scatter mulch. They follow my lead. Listen to the details as I describe them. It feels good. It feels powerful and there’s nothing wrong with that.

I am the CEO of the garden and I kind of like it that way – in the garden, in the spring, with my shovel in hand and dirt under my fingernails.

Antioch Public Library summer reading program offered through July 31

All ages are eligible and encouraged to participate in The Antioch Public Library District’s Summer Reading Program as we explore “A Universe of Stories.”

Registration will be available online at www.apld. info or at the library, starting June 1 at www.apld. info. Readers can log their progress with Beanstack, an interactive software that allows participants to earn badges while they read and complete program activities.

The library also provides a paper log that will be available at the library starting June 1.

Adults and teens can choose between reading by the minute or by the book to earn their points while children can earn points for various reading practices.

Everyone who completes the program will be eligible to win some great prizes.

The Summer Reading Program is supported by the Antioch Library Friends and contributing Antioch businesses. You can register to participate in this free program by visiting Antioch Public Library District after June 1 or online at www. apld.info.

The Solid Waste Agency of Lake County (SWALCO) will be hosting a one-day only special electronics recycling collection event for broken and unwanted electronics.

This one-day special event will be held on Tuesday, June 11 from 8:00 a.m. to noon at the Mundelein Public Works Facility located at 440 East Crystal in Mundelein.

Recycling fees will be assessed for televisions and cathode ray tube monitors ($35 for TV’s 21” and larger, $25 for TV’s 20” or smaller, and $25 for each cathode ray tube monitor) all other acceptable electronics will be collected at no cost.

SWALCO routinely provides no cost opportunities for Lake County residents to recycle their broken or unwanted electronics from their homes through a network of drop off locations operating around Lake County. However, State law limits these locations to accepting only residentially generated electronics. SWALCO has recognized there is a need to offer electronics recycling opportunities to Lake County businesses, schools, non for profits and units of government whose electronics do not apply to the residential generated definition of the Law. To address this need, SWALCO has partnered with eWorks Electronics Services Inc., to provide a service called the Business Concierge Program.

Indoor displays and activities will get you ready for an outdoor exploration and each month features a new topic.
