Move Over Law takes effect in July

Anderson’s Candy Shop celebrating 100 anniversary th

Anderson’s Candy Shop was founded in 1919 by Arthur and Gertrude Anderson in Chicago. By 1926 they were driven out of the city by rising rent costs and the promise of suburban growth, so they moved to Richmond. Now in its fourth generation, the shop has been located at 10301 N. Main Street since before Route 12 was paved. Anderson’s Candy Shop is famous for its handmade chocolates – from their English toffee and molasses sponge to their marshmallow and butter creams, each piece is taken from scratch to finish in the shop on Main Street. Anderson’s has been consistently ranked among the best candy makers in the nation since the 1960’s with honors including: endorsements by the David Susskind Show, Dean Richards of WGN Radio, and officially ranked among the best in America by the LA Times and best in North America by Consumers Digest. To celebrate all these accomplishments, a twoday celebration of their 100th anniversary will take place in the village of Richmond on Saturday, June 29 and Sunday, June 30. The celebration will be a two day ChocolateFest that will include live music, a corn roast, vintage car display, free BINGO, a pancake breakfast, community church service, chocolate themed biergarten, historical displays, free mini donuts, a bounce house for kids and more! The local conservation district is also getting in the celebratory spirit with a special scavenger hunt through Glacial Park. Just as making quality candy is a fourthgeneration tradition in the Anderson family, giving and enjoying Anderson’s has become a multigeneration tradition for people all over the country. The Anderson’s invite their friends and fans to attend the Anniversary Party Weekend and to join in on Sunday, June 30 at 11:15 a.m. when the staff and fans will sing “happy birthday’ and share a giant cake. At that time the Anderson family also plans to honor several longtime employees. For more information about the event of the Anderson’s history contact Katie Anderson-Tedder by email at AndersonsCandyShop@gmail.com.

Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White is again calling on drivers to stop driving while distracted—with a special emphasis on moving over when approaching a stopped emergency vehicle or any stopped vehicle displaying flashing lights. The Move Over Law, also known as Scott’s Law, is designed to protect law enforcement, emergency responders and others who are stopped on the side of roadways. “Motorists need to focus on driving when they are behind the wheel,” said White. “Stop driving distracted and stop texting. If you see an emergency vehicle stopped on the side of the road, reduce speed and change lanes if possible. Protect those who protect us.” White announced his office is undertaking efforts to enhance public education on the Move Over Law. This includes: • Adding a reminder about the Move Over Law to driver’s license renewal notices. The office is required by state law to mail these notices. • Adding a reminder about the Move Over Law to vehicle registration renewal notices. • Adding a test question on the Move Over Law to the written driving exam. • Creating a pamphlet on the Move Over Law for distribution at all Driver Services facilities statewide.

Above: A girl admires the customer favorites in the candy case, candy bars. Anderson’s makes 30 kinds of candy bars, and fans know that red printing means milk chocolate and blue printing means dark chocolate. Anderson’s candy bar packaging has been the same for most of its 100-year history. Right: Leif Anderson, third generation owner and manager of Anderson’s Candy Shop, makes fritters on the big marble table in Anderson Candy Shop’s candy cooking room. Fritters are one of Anderson’s original candy recipes dating back to the founder, Leif’s grandfather Arthur Anderson. See more photos on page 3. SUBMITTED PHOTOS Hi-Liter
