Student proposing ‘seizure patch’ wins CLC’s fourth annual Big Idea contest A College of Lake County student’s idea of an adhesive patch, which detects seizures from epilepsy and other conditions, won $1,000 and first place at CLC’s fourth annual Big Idea contest held April 15 at the Grayslake Campus.

Mikaela Cleveland, a biomedical engineering major, presented her idea before a panel of five judges in a format similar to ABC-TV’s popular “Shark Tank” program. Cleveland, a Winthrop Harbor resident, said she came up with the idea after thinking about service dogs that can detect seizures. “I thought, if a dog can predict a seizure, surely we can invent a device that does the same thing,” she said.

Students were given a deadline of March 17 to submit a two- to three-minute video summarizing their idea to solve a problem, harness an opportunity or change the world. No financials or business plans were required.

At the April 15 contest, each of the five finalists was allowed four minutes to pitch their idea, followed by a four-minute Q & A session. From the five, the panel decided on the top three finishers.

Patty Clark, a former McDonald’s marketing executive who currently is a CLC business professor and main organizer of the Big Idea contest, said, “Mikaela’s idea took first place because she was passionate about making a difference for

those affected by the life-altering condition of seizures.”

Finishing second in the contest, for a $500 prize, was Scott Stetz, a business administration major who proposed Change App, a smartphone app that manages change received from cash purchases at retail stores. “Instead of the cashier giving you coins back, the change gets loaded into the app,” said Stetz, a Crystal Lake resident. “Over time you can see how much change you accumulate and save.”

The third-place winner, for a $250 prize, was Emma Uren, a Gurnee resident planning on transferring to Northern Michigan University and majoring in entrepreneurship. Her product, “Doodles to Da Vinci,” is a tutoring and language-learning platform staffed by people doing full-time non-profit work in Central America.

With plans to attend the University of WisconsinMilwaukee in the fall, Cleveland said she was “thrilled” to win the contest and build her portfolio.

“CLC is a pretty incredible school to have events like this, which encourage creativity and entrepreneurial thinking,” she said.

“The college has prepared me well for a four-year university.”

Antioch Garden Club to hold plant sale May 18

The Antioch Garden Club will hold its perennial plant sale on Saturday, May 18, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Williams Park Pavilion, 741 Main St., Antioch.

The club will offer hundreds of member-grown perennials and annuals, woodland plants, vegetable seedlings, ground covers, houseplants and garden décor as well as homemade bake sale treats. You will also be able to purchase locally made honey products and soaps at the sale.

Mother’s Day Pie & Plant Sale Saturday

The Altar & Rosary Society-CCW of St. Joseph’s Church in Richmond, IL, will be holding its 12th Annual Day Before Mother’s Day Pie & Plant Sale on Saturday, May 11, beginning at 8:30 a.m.

The pies are baked by parishioners of St. Joseph’s, and some of last year’s choices included apple, cherry, pecan, and rhubarb. The sale of homebaked pies will continue until all pies are sold. Stop in early for the widest selection.

Friend’s letter helps woman leave abhorrent living conditions Dear W.C., I was talking to my friend on the phone and she told me the home she was renting is being condemned. When she told me about her living conditions, I drove over to see if there was anything I could do to help. What I saw has kept me up at night ever since. I have been so worried and did not know what I could do for her until I thought of you.

I cannot help her because I care for my disabled husband full time and live on a tight budget. My friend is elderly.

She has no living family left.

She moved into the home about eight years ago and it was in bad shape then. Her landlord keeps reducing the rent but does not do any repairs. The roof has leaked for years and so has the plumbing.

My friend told me that she only has two weeks left until she has to get out. Someone called and complained about how bad the home looks, so the building inspector came out and said it was beyond repair.

Mold is growing everywhere, and the smell is terrible. There is a gaping hole in the ceiling where the leak came through, causing all the drywall to fall down in her bedroom. There are broken windows and buckets under all the sinks.

I still am in shock that this is how my friend has lived for the last few years and I did not know. She has not invited me over, always using the excuse

that I am too busy caring for my husband. She was right, but now I know she was too embarrassed for me to see her house. I encouraged her to apply for assistance, but there is a long waiting list. She does not have the time to wait. She needs a place to go that she can afford now. I would be so grateful if you could help my friend during this difficult time.

Dear readers, I have seen the elderly living in such poor conditions many times during my 30 years running The Time Is Now to Help. Oftentimes they have lived like this for so long that it is hard for them to comprehend moving and find it physically and financially impossible to do so.

This leaves them in a state of fear and uncertainty. I know of no other organization that gives the guidance and physical and financial assistance that lifts these kinds of burdens like Time Is Now. The complexity of such a problem was taking its toll on this elderly widow, who needed our experienced, heartfelt help to see her

through.

I called the concerned friend to get more details. She told me about their long friendship and some of the difficulties her friend had endured, which included the loss of a child when she was in her 30s, the husband who passed away in her 40s, the struggle to work on her feet all day until retirement while needing both knees replaced and then trying to afford living on Social Security while paying for prescriptions, car repairs and life in a disintegrating home.

“She has the mind and ability of a woman half her age. I wish I could be that independent.”

That was what I was hoping to hear because it meant the woman could continue to live on her own.

“There is no one else I know that is as deserving of help as my friend. She is such a good person. She has no idea I wrote to you. When you call her, it will be a surprise.”

I called the elderly woman, and after a moment of confusion when I introduced myself, she realized who I was and began to cry. I told her a friend had written to us on her behalf and she immediately said the friend’s name, knowing who would do this for her.

“She was so upset when she saw the house I’m renting. She and the building inspector told me I need to move out right

away, but I have nowhere to go.”

“That is why I’m calling. I want to see if we can help you through this.”

“You can help me? I haven’t had anyone help me in years.”

“Why didn’t you write me a letter yourself?”

“I never thought of myself as being like one of the poor people you write about. Now that I think about it, I should have written you a letter a while ago. I have known I have to get out of this house for a long time, but I did not know how I could do this on my own. It’s all so overwhelming and scary.”

I asked about her landlord, and it was clear he was not interested in doing any remodeling. He had hung onto it as an investment for years but did not have the money for upkeep.

We went over her tight budget. I made suggestions about expenses she could reduce or eliminate. She confessed to collecting things for too many years. It is so hard for them to let these items go as they move into smaller apartments.

As I made my list of assistance, I told her I couldn’t come over but I would like to have volunteers visit. She was embarrassed to have strangers come to her home but agreed it would be necessary.

I made a few calls to see what arrangements could help her.

I told her I would call her back after hearing from the volunteers.

Volunteers agreed to go later that day and would report back to me. I then inquired about rentals.

“I had no idea how bad this was going to be,” one volunteer told me. “We need to help this woman now. I talked to a friend and they told me about a first floor rental in an apartment building, but I’m not sure if she can afford the rent.”

When he told me the price and the landlord’s name, I called to see if we could secure the apartment. After the landlord heard about the woman’s age and living conditions, he agreed to an even more affordable price.

I had the volunteer bring an application over for the woman to fill out, and once that was completed we could plan to move her.

She would no longer have to live with buckets, mold and leaks.

The volunteers took over boxes so she could pack her necessary belongings for her new but smaller apartment.

Even with volunteers helping, every time they came over she had a box or two of things to throw out or give away. Over the course of a few days, her items were all packed and carried to her new apartment.

Most of her furniture was too worn or moldy to move so we replaced it with donated items.

A new bed also was delivered.

The elderly woman is doing much better. She never realized how detrimental her living conditions had been to her health. The mold had been causing endless allergy symptoms and headaches that she no longer suffers from. She also does not have the financial stress of being overextended each month. The budget we put together has allowed her to eat healthier. Now that she is not spending all of her time emptying buckets and drying wet floors, she enjoys time with her friend.

The last time I spoke to the woman she said, “I had no idea how bad things were for me.

Thank God my dearest friend came by to see how I was living and then your wonderful volunteers helped me get rid of years of stuff I didn’t need and helped me move.

“I can’t believe I’m finally out of that house and all of you have given me my life back.

The constant fear I was living in is gone. How can I ever repay all of you?”

“Just pray for all the people that still need our help and that they too have a good friend like yours that cares enough to get them help.”

Donation of body armor received for K-9 Boomer

Lake County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Boomer has received a bullet and stab protective vest thanks to a charitable donation from non-profit organization Vested Interest in K-9s, Inc. The vest was sponsored by Yorkville Paws & Claws and embroidered with the sentiment “Honoring those who served and sacrificed.”

Sheriff John Idleburg said, “We are very grateful for the generous donation from Vested Interest in K-9s. Because of their generosity, Boomer joins our other canines in being protected against a violent attack. We value our four canines very much, and want to do everything we can to ensure they are safe while serving the Lake County Community.”

Vested Interest in K-9s, Inc. is a 501c(3) charity located in East Taunton, MA whose mission is to provide bullet and stab protective vests and other assistance to dogs of law enforcement and related agencies throughout the United States.

The non-profit was established in 2009 to assist law enforcement agencies with this potentially lifesaving body armor for their four-legged K-9 officers. Since its inception, Vested Interest in K-9s, Inc. provided over 3,300 protective vests in 50 states, through private and corporate donations, at a value of $5.7 million dollars.

The program is open to dogs actively employed in the U.S.

with law enforcement or related agencies who are certified and at least 20 months of age.

New K-9 graduates, as well as K-9s with expired vests, are eligible to participate.

The donation to provide one protective vest for a law enforcement K-9 is $950.00.

Each vest has a value between $1,744 – $2,283, and a fiveyear warranty and an average weight of 4-5 lbs. There is an

estimated 30,000 law enforcement K-9s throughout the United States.

Fishing volunteers needed for summer If you enjoy fishing and want to share your knowledge with children, the Lake County Forest Preserves is looking for volunteers for the summer.

“We are seeking volunteers to assist with our popular summer fishing camps,” said Mark Hurley, volunteer coordinator at the Lake County Forest Preserves.

The 8-week camps, beginning in June, are held in the mornings at Independence Grove Forest Preserve in Libertyville. Campers are eager to learn more about fish, bait, lures and techniques.

Spring Grove burglary nets Kennebeck multiple charges by paramedics and released into the custody of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

James M. Kennebeck Kennebeck was transported to the Lake County Jail where he was subsequently charged with: Burglary (Class 2 Felony), Possession of Burglary Tools (Class 4 Felony), Resisting a Peace Officer (Class A Misdemeanor), Criminal Damage to Property (Class A Misdemeanor), Theft (Class A Misdemeanor). Kennebeck also had an active failure to appear arrest warrant out of McHenry County for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Sheriff Idleburg reminds the community all defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.

The post office letter carriers will be picking up food for local food pantries on Saturday, May 11 during the annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive.

On April 26, 2019 Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to Route 12 Bar & Grill, 37450 North Route 12, Spring Grove, for a burglar alarm.

When Sheriff’s Deputies arrived they began checking the exterior of the bar & grill and found a closed door which had fresh pry marks on it, indicating someone attempted to force entry into the establishment.

Additional units were called and as they were responding, a man, later identified as James M. Kennebeck, 29, of the 400 block of Rand Drive, McHenry, emerged from the building. The Deputy ordered Kennebeck to stop, but Kennebeck refused and fled on foot. Kennebeck was apprehended after a brief foot-chase.

Kennebeck was found to be in possession of several bottles of alcohol stolen from the bar & grill, and while fleeing, one of the bottles hidden in his pants shattered and cut him on the leg. He was evaluated

House OKs doubling of fines for drivers who pass stopped school buses

Drivers who don’t stop for school buses could see a doubling in ticket fines under a proposed state law that passed the House in April. House Bill 1873, sponsored by GOP Rep. Darren Bailey of Xenia, doubles the fine for first offenses to $300 from $150, and for second offenses to $1,000 from $500.

The bill passed the House on by a vote of 74-16, with 12 representatives voting present after extended and heated debate. Bailey called the bill a matter of “public safety, to protect school children as they load and unload off buses.”

Critics said increasing penalties don’t deter people from violating the law, and provide only extra hardship for those who already have the least ability to pay them.

Conyears-Ervin was the first to voice opposition, saying she could not support the bill if the public is not educated about it simultaneously.

“Residents that can’t pay it may lose their license, may in turn not be able to go to work, and may in turn not be able to put food on the table for their children. “There are people that will have no clue of this legislation, and all the bill will do is put them in a deeper hole,” Conyears-Ervin said.

Bailey said he’d be willing to work with her on educating the public about the change in fine structure, because education “is what will raise the awareness to protect our children.”

Others, like Jacksonville Republican C.D. Davidsmeyer, said a driver’s first violation of the law should be enough education.

HB 1873 changes only the fine structure for school bus

violations. It does not change other provisions of current law for drivers to have their licenses suspended for three months for first violations and for a year for second violations.

In those cases, drivers can apply to the Secretary of State’s office for a restricted driver permit, which allows them to drive to and from work.

Plainfield GOP Rep. Mark Batinick, one of the bill’s sponsors, said even with the doubled fines, Illinois’ laws for failing to stop for school buses are weak.

“I’m sitting over here stunned that we’re putting the price tag to say [an extra] $150 is too much for a school kid,” Batinick said. He referenced other states’ penalties, some of which include jail time and fines as much as $10,000. Minnesota, he said, has a $500 fine and 90 days of

jail time for a first offense.

“We’re at the low end of the fines on this, which is probably why it keeps happening, because nobody cares about the fine,” Batinick yelled.

Bailey said Illinois school bus drivers reported more than 20,000 instances where buses were passed while the “STOP” arm was out in 2017, according to a survey by ABC 7 in Chicago. Opponents maintained that doubling fines is regressive, and would result only in financial hurt for those who can’t pay it.

“This bill is based on a flawed premise,” said Democrat Will Guzzardi of Chicago. “The idea [is] that by raising penalties on certain types of behaviors, we will deter those behaviors. Raising the fines isn’t going to keep our kids any safer. It will just take more money out of the pockets of people who can least afford it.”
