CLC to host first Graduation Job Fair

Recent college graduates, as well as community members, can explore career opportunities and meet representatives from more than 30 area employers at the College of Lake County’s first annual Graduation Job Fair. The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Thursday, June 6 on the Student Street hallway of CLC’s Grayslake Campus.

The fair is co-sponsored by the Job Center of Lake County, the local one-stop center that connects employers and job seekers, as well as Lake County Partners, a nonprofit corporation that drives local economic development in Lake County. Recruiters from employers, including Baxter International, Inc., Walgreens and RR Donnelley, will be present to discuss opportunities for recent graduates in both full-time and part-time positions. Industries include healthcare, manufacturing, business, engineering, hospitality, automotive and more. Graduates from all majors are invited to attend.

Friends of MCC to host golf invitational

Magic, merriment sure to please at upcoming Wizards Weekend Day

Mark your calendars and dust off your golf clubs for the Friends of MCC Foundation Golf Invitational on Monday, June 10 at Crystal Lake Country Club, 721 Country Club Road in Crystal Lake.

All proceeds raised from this premier event help to further the Foundation’s mission to provide financial support to MCC students, making education accessible and attainable through student scholarships.

The event will open at 7:30 a.m. with a continental breakfast, followed by a shotgun start at 9 a.m.

Students, community partner together to restore disaster relief trailer Twenty-seven students from the College of Lake County’s automotive collision repair program have helped improve area disaster-relief efforts, donating time and materials to restore and paint an equipment trailer used by a volunteer disaster-response team from locally-based Journey Church.

The newly restored trailer, known as the Response Unit, received a makeover that went beyond a new paint job.

For several weeks this spring, CLC students replaced old, rusty bolts with new ones, and they sandblasted away the old paint before giving the trailer a new coat of white, said Octavio Cavazos, chair of CLC’s automotive collision repair department. Besides upbeat graphics, the tagline, “Hope in Every Storm,” appears in large capital letters.

“We could not have done this without CLC,” said Jeff Berard, response-team director for Journey Church, which has congregations in Kenosha,

Burlington, Wis. and Beach Park, Ill. “The trailer becomes someone’s hope, announcing that help has arrived, whether getting water out of a flooded basement or gathering belongings after a tornado. The students did a wonderful job of turning an old trailer into a work of art. They also expanded their knowledge and learned a little more on how to navigate successfully in life by serving their fellow human beings.”

The trailer houses generators, power tools, safety equipment and other items used by Journey’s newly formed response team. Designed to serve communities in southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois, the team so far has helped families in Madison, Wis. recover from flooding, and they have assisted a Racine family whose house was destroyed by fire.

The pool of about 100 volunteers will be trained by area fire and emergency-management professionals in basics

of helping local authorities in any disaster, working in shifts of about 20 to 25 per disaster. “After the first responders have finished their work during and immediately after a disaster, our volunteers come in and help with the recovery process and longterm support for individuals and families who have been affected,” said Ray Knight, a leader of the team. “We coordinate our efforts with emergency-management professionals, and the work of our team fills a definite gap.”

CLC President Lori Suddick, Ed.D., said, “This joint effort between Journey Church and our automotive collision repair program is a great example of the college’s core principles, to deliver high-quality, accessible learning opportunities to advance student success and strengthen the diverse communities we serve.”

Offering students a practical, service-learning opportunity to apply their skills is

a “win-win” for all parties, noted Dr. Richard Ammon, dean of CLC’s Engineering, Math and Physical Sciences division. “Our college is in the transformation business,” he said. “Students who learn practical career skills are more valuable to themselves, their families and their community.”

One student who found the trailer-restoration project rewarding is Alexander Arce, a Wauconda resident majoring in automotive collision repair. “It was really cool to work with others, represent the college and make a difference,” said Arce, who plans to earn an A.A.S. degree in 2020 and find a job in a collision repair shop. “It was also pretty fun.”

Liking and loving develop at different times, in different ways I love my family. We all do. Or most of us at least – on most days, at least.

Loving your family is a given. You anticipate loving your spouse even before you meet him or her. This is exponentiated with your children. You love them fully and completely well before they are born. There is nothing that could keep you from loving them. You count the days until you can love them face to face.

You understand, in the core of your being, that this love will fill your heart and theirs.

You anticipate loving them.

Constantly. But you probably don’t give much thought to the concept of liking them.

Like does not always precede love. Sometimes it does. You might like a friend and then grow to love them.

You probably liked your significant other before loving them. But with kids it is just the opposite.

You love them first and – in the best of circumstances

– like them later. Love is one thing. Like is another. Both are good. Both are great.

Loving your son is wonderful.

Liking him is a bonus. Ditto that for your daughter. Double ditto for a granddaughter.

My life is filled with bonuses (sigh of contentment).

For years (decades) I never really thought about liking my husband. I loved him, of course. But I didn’t contemplate the like factor.

He’d probably admit the same. We were too busy to dwell upon the likes of like.

He and I spent many years in the trenches. Creating a family. Raising kids. Putting Band Aids on boo boos and wiping noses and bottoms. It

was hard work. Quite literally 24/7. Sleep deprived doesn’t even begin to describe it.

We are now on the tail end. We can sleep when we want. Everyone at our house can do their own wiping. I am overjoyed.

It’s been a more than few years I guess and a gradual process – this decrease in parental workload and responsibility. My husband and I have found ourselves alone in the house on more than a few occasions.

Sometimes we eat dinner – just the two of us. Other times we watch a movie without interruption. We have the opportunity for extended conversations. We’ve established a cadence to our days and weeks.

We’ve created a new routine without really thinking about it. And in the midst of this I’ve discovered something pretty powerful: We still like each other.

We get along. We talk. We laugh. We share stories. We

remember. We plan for the future. We like being together.

We are friends.

I’ve always loved him, but I think maybe, perhaps, for a time I forgot that I really like him. Now I remember and it is an insight worth pondering.

It is a reason for gratitude.

People get married because they are in love. People stay married because they are in like as well as love. It’s not enough to love someone.

Not really. You have to enjoy them as well. You have to like them.

You have to be friends.

Best friends in the best of circumstances. Glad to be living in that and ready for the next chapter.

Aid helps couple bounce back from husband’s stroke Dear W.C., My husband and I have been struggling since he had a stroke three months ago. He is only 56, so he never thought he was having a stroke when he started having symptoms. He was under a lot of stress, and I am convinced that was a reason why he had such a devastating stroke.

I care for him full time because he is weak and struggling to walk and speak.

He is trying to be independent and I take him to therapy, but it is going to be a long time before he can do most basic tasks unaided.

I have taken a leave of absence from my job and filed for disability for him, but there is no way I can keep up with our bills. My main concern is our car payment is two months behind. I can’t lose our car, which only has six payments left.

We have family, including our married daughter who lives several hours away, but they cannot help us financially. They want us to move in with them until my husband is more independent.

This would help because I could work again and have help with his care. A friend of mine is buying our home, which will help us get out from under our mortgage. It’s a fair price, but we will not make anything on the sale.

I guess I am asking if you can help us with the car payments and utilities. If I can get these bills up-to-date we can move with a clean slate.

Dear readers, I recently received an update from them in the mail. I originally read their letter about 10 months ago, so when considering who to feature in this week’s column I pulled out their letter and my notes. This is how we helped them: I arrived to see the lawn needed mowing and the home needed minor repairs. I was relieved that it was going to be sold because it was easy to see the wife did not have the time or the energy to tackle outside maintenance.

A tired, disheveled woman answered the door, smiling when she recognized me. She shushed her dog and invited me in. The woman led me in the same direction the dog had gone and we entered the living room, where a man sat in a wheelchair with the canine at his feet. He held out his fisted hand and said a muffled hello.

I pulled up a chair next to him so we could talk. His wife told me more details about the stroke and the damage it had done. He was seeing physical therapists and speech pathologists. She knew he would never be 100 percent again, but therapists had given them hope that he would improve over the next six months.

“I can’t believe we are asking you for help, but we have no one else to turn to,” she said.

It seemed like a good plan because of the husband’s situation. The wife told me she was making arrangements to continue his therapy.

I watched as the husband pet his dog.

“Bailey is a big comfort to my husband. Isn’t she dear?”

The husband nodded and smiled.

The wife told me she had been teaching Bailey a few things to help her husband, picking up dropped items and getting her attention when he needed help.

“She’s by no means a service dog but definitely a devoted helper.”

The woman went to get their bills while I talked to her husband for a few minutes.

I understood him, but it was a slow process. He told me how much he wished he had listened to his body when he had his first symptoms.

“I thought it was just the stress I was under. I didn’t know I was having a stroke.”

We went over their overdue bills. After looking at the car I made a note to bring their payments up-to-date and pay an additional month. We also paid their overdue utilities so they did not risk disconnection before they moved.

The wife said she would be putting some of their furniture in hopes of moving into their own place. Her friend was going to buy the remaining furniture once she sold hers.

I walked through their kitchen and was saddened to see little food. I slipped some grocery gift cards to the wife and her eyes filled with tears.

“It will be nice to have a good dinner again. I just can’t leave my husband long enough to go to the food pantry.”

We finally talked about the move. Some of her friends from church had offered to help with packing and loading the trailer she planned to rent. I told her to contact me if she needed extra help and she promised she would.

By now her husband was fatigued. The wife excused herself to help him to the bathroom and to bed for a nap. While I waited, sweet Bailey kept me company. The wife returned and also looked exhausted.

I went over the list of assistance. I had added new tires for their car and gas gift cards. She began to cry as I was packing up my bag.

“I am thinking positive and praying my husband will be walking and much better in six months. I don’t want to be a burden to you or my daughter.”

I assured her she was not a burden to Time Is Now to Help because helping people in need is what we do. I assured her that their daughter did not view them as burdens either.

I followed up with them a month later and was relieved to know all had gone as planned. The husband was making slow progress, but they were all doing much better living with their family.

As time went by and we moved on to helping many more people, my memories of them faded until we received a wonderful letter from the wife.

She was overjoyed to share the good news that her husband was walking unaided, his speech had improved greatly, he was swallowing solid food again and doing many other things that he had lost the ability to do.

She shared how they were planning to move into their own small apartment close to their daughter’s home because she had saved up enough for a security deposit and first month’s rent.

“This is all thanks to your help. My husband could not have made so much progress if it wasn’t for you taking away that stress of losing our car and making it possible for us to move. Thank you and God bless you.”

Dressed in your wizard or witch characteristic clothing, or perhaps as your favorite magical character, be ready to be involved in exciting mystical fun all day. Many of these activities are free.

Follow the map into the Wizard Village Shops, which will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Here once again enjoy more magical fun and a chance to use those SmartWands for unique photo opportunities. The map will contain all the information needed to participate in the Wizard scavenger hunt.

The Wizards After Party is open to wizards, witches and muggles from 5 to 99 years of age.

Crafts Faire will be held one day only this year on June 15, in conjunction with Wizards Weekend Day. The Faire will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in downtown Antioch.

“Moving forward, to protect against this increasing trend in precipitation, we need to make our county, communities, subdivisions, homes and ourselves more resilient, so we are able to withstand and recover more quickly from heavy rainfall and flood related events,” said Warner.

“One of the ways SMC is looking to help Lake County is by evaluating and revising the Watershed Development Ordinance (WDO) as a signif-

Recently Lake County has been experiencing more frequent and stronger rainfall events. In fact, in 2018, Lake County went above flood stage during six separate storm events. This was triple the average number of flood events that went above flood stage in Lake County over the previous 10 years, and it was a record for the county.

“According to the Fourth National Climate Assessment released in November 2018, the globe is getting warmer,” said Mike Warner, Stormwater Management Commission (SMC) Executive Director.

“Warm air not only holds more water, but it also has more energy, which leads to stronger storms. Over the last few years, Lake County has seen the results of this effect in the form of increased rainfall events, leading to a rise in flooding.”

In July 2017, Lake County was inundated by heavy rains.

Some communities received over seven inches of rain in a 24-hour period. The rain not

With current rainfall trends, Lake County could be on track to break 2018’s flood stage exceedance in 2019.

Rainfall events this year have already caused river levels to exceed flood stage four times.

The increased rainfall also impacts other Lake County operations, including the Lake County Division of Transportation and Public Works which has to factor rainfall into designs for infrastructure improvements, and the Lake County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) which is the lead on flood response efforts for the County.

Recently Lake County has been experiencing more frequent and stronger rainfall events. In fact, in 2018, Lake County went above flood stage during six separate storm events. This was triple the average number of flood events that went above flood stage in Lake County over the previous 10 years, and it was a record for the county.

“According to the Fourth National Climate Assessment released in November 2018, the globe is getting warmer,” said Mike Warner, Stormwater Management Commission (SMC) Executive Director.

“Warm air not only holds more water, but it also has more energy, which leads to stronger storms. Over the last few years, Lake County has seen the results of this effect in the form of increased rainfall events, leading to a rise in flooding.”

In July 2017, Lake County was inundated by heavy rains.

Some communities received over seven inches of rain in a 24-hour period. The rain not

Take steps to prevent theft around your home Local sheriff’s offices remind residents with the warmer months arriving not only are we out enjoying the weather, so are others such as thieves and burglars. Criminals have been targeting unlocked homes and vehicles.

Here are some helpful tips and ideas to prevent becoming a victim: • Establish a nightly routine to make sure your vehicle and home is locked up.

• Do not leave valuable items in your vehicle.

• If you are selling items like a lawnmower, dirt bike, or ATV do not leave them outside overnight.

• Record serial numbers and take photos of valuable and sentimental items.

• Install security cameras.

• Conduct periodic checks on security cameras already installed to make sure they are working and that nothing is obstructing their views.

• Outdoor lighting is important, so make sure any burnt-out bulbs are replaced.

• Install motion detection lights in dark areas.

• Trim your trees and bushes to prevent criminals from using them as hiding spots.

• If you will be away from your home for an extended period of time, please remem-

ber to have the post office hold your mail.

• Do not advertise on social media that you are gone. Save those posts and pictures for after you return home.

• Leave lights and a television on while you are not home. This gives the impression that someone is home.

Contact you local police agency and inquire if they have a vacation house watch program, which some sheriffs offices offer. These types of crimes can happen to anyone, any day of the week, at any hour of the day. If you see something, say something and report suspicious activity.

It’s Thursday Concert series kicks off on June 13 The Village of Antioch has announced the musical lineup for It’s Thursday Concert series.

The event will be held every Thursday starting on June 13, with the exception of July 4 and July 18 (Taste
