Big Idea contest offers up to $1,000 prize for students College of Lake County students will present their creative, leading-edge ideas for products or services in CLC’s fourth annual Big Idea contest and awards ceremony from 7-9 p.m.

Monday, April 15 at the Grayslake Campus. The public is welcome to attend.

The competition is designed to foster entrepreneurship, innovation and partnership with local businesses, according to Patty Clark, CLC business professor and main organizer of the event. In a format similar to ABC-TV’s popular “Shark Tank” program, the students will pitch their ideas to a panel of five judges with entrepreneurial expertise.

The locally-based panel includes a patent attorney and members of the college’s business administration advisory committee.

Other panelists include a representative from The Hub, an entrepreneurial support program of the nonprofit Greater Waukegan Development Coalition, and a representative from CLC’s Small Business Development Center.

Students were given a deadline of March 17 to submit a two- to threeminute video summarizing

their idea to solve a problem, harness an opportunity or change the world. No financials or business plans were required. From the submissions, the $1,000 grand prize will be awarded to the first-place winner, with $500 for second place and $250 for the third-place finisher.

“We are excited about the range of new products, services and social entrepreneurship ideas this year. It shows how creative CLC students are,” said Clark, noting that entries have come from students majoring in several fields, including computer science, engineering, business, communications and economics. “We are also excited this year to be able to collaborate on Big Idea with sponsor Suzy’s Swirl Company (a Lake Bluffbased frozen yogurt/treat shop), students from our Entrepreneurship (BUS 131) course, our student Business Club and CLC’s Baxter Innovation Lab.” Edith Perez, a digital media and design major who took third place in last year’s competition, said the experience helped her polish her writing and presentation skills. Perez, who has since been focusing on her courses and a 2019 CLC graduation rather than refining her idea, said she is nevertheless grateful for the college promoting entrepreneurship. “All the innovations that improve and positively impact our lives start with a person

thinking about a solution to address a problem,” said Perez, a Lake Villa resident.

“I’m happy that CLC has the Big Idea competition to encourage entrepreneurship while we’re still in school.

It provides an alternative platform for students to grow their business ideas and build their confidence as well as communication skills, all of which are valuable when we join the workforce.”

Antioch man guilty of enticing underage girls

An Antioch man pleaded guilty last week to federal criminal charges for enticing underage girls to engage in sex acts with him.

Casey Ireland, 36, pleaded guilty to one count of enticement of a minor to engage in criminal sexual activity, and one count of attempted enticement of a minor to engage in criminal sexual activity. Each count carries a mandatory minimum sentence of ten years in prison, and a maximum sentence of life in prison.

U.S. District Judge Rebecca R. Pallmeyer set sentencing for June 24, 2019, at 11:30 a.m.

The guilty plea was announced by John R. Lausch, Jr., United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois; and Leo Lamont, Special Agent-in-Charge of the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, Resident Agency Great Lakes.

Valuable assistance was provided by the Antioch Police Department and law enforcement authorities in Wisconsin. The government is represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney A.J. Dixon.

Johnsburg man dead after being hit by car

On March 31, at approximately 12:41 p.m., officers of the McHenry Police Department responded to the Home Depot store, 2461 N. Richmond Road, for a reported crash involving a vehicle and a pedestrian.

The investigation determined a 71-year-old male, identified as William F. Dammeyer of Johnsburg, Ill., had been struck by a 2008 GMC Sierra HD pickup truck that had been traveling near the entrance of the store.

Due to the injuries suffered

by Dammeyer, he was transported by the McHenry Township Fire Protection District (MTFPD) to Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital and then flown to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.

On April 1, the McHenry Police Department learned Dammeyer succumbed to his injuries and passed away. The driver of the vehicle, Christian J. Zientko, 19, of McHenry, Ill., was cited for Disobeying a Stop Sign, 625 ILCS 5/111204(b).

McHenry County mourns loss of K-9 Sage

In early March, just before he was about to retire from service, McHenry County Sheriff’s K-9 Sage passed away because of health complications.

K-9 Sage, the partner of Sheriff’s deputy Jeremy Bruketta, served the region with honor, according to the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office.

“K-9 Sage was a wellknown and respected cadaver locating dog in Northern Illinois and Southern Wisconsin during his career,” the Sheriff’s Office said.

“K-9 Sage was known for being a police K-9 that had all around ‘top notch’ skills.”

K-9 Sage, who died on March 8, partnered with Bruketta in April 2010 and graduated from Police K-9 Training two months later.

The Sheriff’s Office said Sage was trained in narcotics detection, handler and civilian protection, tracking, article searches, crowd control, area/building searches and advanced cadaver location.

“Deputy Bruketta and K-9 Sage were a very dedicated and hard-working

team which helped developed their great reputation in the area,” the Sheriff’s Office said.

During K-9 Sage’s 8 plus years of service, his detections led to seizures in excess of $650,000 and 11 vehicles.

K-9 Sage was instrumental in helping remove over $8,332,460 worth of dangerous drugs off the streets of McHenry County in his career.

K-9 Sage was credited with 43 subject finds through tracks, area searches, build-

ing searches, and at least 7 cadaver finds. K-9 Sage also made countless appearances in K-9 demonstrations at the McHenry County Fair, schools, and other special events.

“Sage made me a better person in many areas of my life. Sage was so special and unique. He will never be replaced. He was one in a million,” Bruketta said.

The Sheriff’s Office, meanwhile, credited Animal Hospital of Woodstock for the care of K-9 Sage throughout his career.

Slices of life

Familiarity breeds contempt – or confusion I saw someone familiar at the store today. I knew that I knew her, or at least that I’d had cause to interact with her on several or perhaps a few occasions.

Problem is, I couldn’t pinpoint exactly which occasions. I was at the grocery store and she wasn’t a person from the grocery store. I hadn’t seen her there before. She definitely didn’t live at the grocery store, much less work there. I was 100 percent positive of that conclusion.

Still, I wasn’t sure, exactly, how well I knew her or from where. Were our kids on the same team? Was she someone from my recent past or more distant and long ago? Was I better acquainted with her husband and perhaps acquainted with her via osmosis? Were we on first name terms? Did I know her from work?

situation – seeing someone you know you know, but you don’t know from where because they are out of place.

I’m sure no one reading this can in any way relate. But I hope so.

Perhaps I’ve even been out of place myself at some times. I wouldn’t know, but it’s probable – someone seeing me and knowing me but not knowing me all at the same time. I do have one of those easy to forget faces.

One of my own first instances of this sort of out-of-placeness happened when I was in first grade. My teacher was Mrs. Corrigan.

I assumed, like most first graders do, that she lived at the school. Why wouldn’t

she?

Imagine my consternation when I ran into her at the grocery store. To make matters worse (much worse) she was with a man! They were shopping together!

Laughing and talking. Like a married couple. Exclamation point.

I was floored. Mrs. Corrigan had a life outside of school. She was out of place, but to my credit, I recognized her and where I knew her from: Evergreen Elementary, Room 102.

This phenomenon has continued throughout the rest of my life. I don’t expect it to stop.

So when I saw the familiar woman who I sort of didn’t really recognize today at the grocery store, I did what I normally do; I wracked my brain to attempt to figure out where her correct location might be.

And I came up at a loss.

I couldn’t figure it out. Not uncommon.

However, I move forward

toward tomorrow with optimism. I know I will solve this puzzle because I will run into her again and most likely it won’t be at the grocery store or any other location that lacks the familiarity I seek. Most likely she will be exactly where she is supposed to be (for me).

And likewise I will be where I am supposed to be (for her) and neither of us will be confused (again or anymore) and all will be right with the world and we will recognize each other and smile and exchange pleasantries and life will go on. I look forward to it.

PM&L to host audition workshops Antioch spring PM&L Theatre will be holding two free auditioning workshops from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on April 20 and April 27 in the building’s Tribute Hall.

While the April 20 workshop will cover auditioning for non-musical productions, the April 27 event will be about auditioning for musicals.

Chris Riter and Rebecca Zellar will lead the April 20 Workshop. This workshop will cover tips on how to prepare for auditions, and make a memorable impact during cold readings and monologues, which will help set participants up for being called back and cast in a production. Participants should be prepared to cold read materials provided.

Riter graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Theatre from West Virginia University and was a part of the school’s acting studio.

He was a co-founder and co-artistic director of The GreyZelda Theatre Group, a Jeff-nominated storefront theatre company that ran for eight years in Chicago.

Flashlight Egg Hunt for Teens 11-16 years old The Antioch Parks and Recreation Department is sponsoring its fourth Annual Flashlight Egg Hunt from 8 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, April 18 at Centennial Park, 601 Anita St., Antioch.

While the department will provide the bags, teens are asked to bring their own flashlight, and cannot use backpacks.

Cost of a wristband is $5 per person and must be purchased in advance.

Antioch Easter parade The Village of Antioch Parks and Recreation will be hosting its 27th annual Easter Parade and Eggcellent Egg Hunt on Saturday, April 20.

The Egg Hunt will be at the Williams Park Pavilion following the parade, roughly 11 a.m. starting with the 1- to 2-yearold hunt, then the 3-5 year hunt, then the 5 -7-year hunt ending with the 8 to 10 year hunt.

McHenry man sentenced for delivery of alprazolam Patrick D. Kenneally, McHenry County State’s Attorney, announces that Jacob N. Reis, 22, of McHenry, Illinois, was sentenced to four years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for Unlawful Delivery of a Controlled Substance.

On May 14, 2018, Reis de-

livered alprazolam to Rachel Ramirez, which caused her death.

This case was investigated by members of the Cary Police Department. This case was prosecuted by Robert Ladd of the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Family Foundation matching grant creates $60,000 in poverty relief We recently received the final donation that successfully matched the 2019 Family Foundation $30,000 matching grant, which allowed us to distribute those funds to the needy.

That is why we are so happy to share with you more than 90 senior citizens, veterans, children, working poor families, the handicapped and single mothers suffering in poverty in our communities received aid.

Rent/shelter ($38,591.92) This was the largest area of assistance as over half of the funds went to preventing homelessness and providing safe shelter.

A husband and wife struggling to work due to poor health and caring for an adult son with multiple handicaps were provided two months’ rent to prevent their eviction.

This will give them the time they need for the husband to recover from his major surgery.

A single mother with two children was saved from homelessness when her job loss caused them to fall behind in their rent. They were on the verge of eviction until we stepped in to help them through this difficult time. Now she has a new job and does not have to worry about going through these many difficulties.

A woman who took in her three nieces after their mother was being abusive and neglectful was helped in paying for her first month’s rent and security deposit on a required two-bedroom apartment. This prevented the children from having to go through foster care and kept them all safely sheltered this past winter. Now the aunt can file for custody of the children.
