An historic Antioch home is now the village’s first bed and breakfast establishment, Dragonfly Bed and Breakfast, which originally had been the Brogan House.

The new bed and breakfast, 1024 Main St., was built in 1885 and bought by hometown woman Sheri Gronert and her husband Kyle in 2009.

“I love Victoriana, and we had talked about some day opening a Victorian-style bed and breakfast,” she said.

“We looked in Galena, but that was too far away. We also looked at a property in Richmond, but it was too expensive.”

Sheri and Kyle enjoyed living in the Brogan House but made no move toward the bed and breakfast dream.

Life just happened. At one point, they cared for their daughter, Jessica, when she recuperated twice from cancer.

When Kyle passed in 2014, Sheri felt at a loss and lost.

“I talked to my counselor and told her that I felt something was left undone.

Something needed to be finished,” Sheri recalled.

Her counselor asked her about any dreams Sheri and her husband had talked about.

“I remembered the bed and breakfast idea,” she said. “So I got to work.”

She painted walls, had tin ceilings installed and highlighted all the authentic Victorian features.

The dining room walls are covered with old photos of both original Brogan family and Sheri’s family. Some of the photos of Sheri’s family are more recent.

The downstairs sitting room and bedrooms upstairs are a mix of antique and some reproduction furniture.

Authentic features like original pine floors have been retained.

There are four bedrooms upstairs. The Harbor Suite features a king bed, an en suite bathroom with a claw foot tub and fireplace.

The Geranium Room has two beds that overlook the backyard and has a door to outside stairs that leads to the back porch.

The Daffodil Room and Jessica’s Room feature queen beds and share a bathroom with the Geranium Room.

Dragonfly is open Friday and Saturday nights and breakfasts are gourmet.

“One morning the meal may be sweet and the next, savory,” Sheri said.

One morning, caramel

French toast bake, chocolate chip muffins, sausage, yogurt with granola and strawberries may be on the menu.

The next morning it might be spinach Gruyere quiche, crispy bacon, glazed apple oat bread and smoothies.

Refreshments are served in the afternoon, organic hand and body soaps are offered in the rooms and bedding and bath towels are laundered in pure, natural detergent.

Low-cost pet vaccination clinic offered in April The Lake County Health Department and Community Health Center’s Animal Care and Control program will offer a low-cost pet vaccination clinic from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday at Lake County Fair Grounds, 1060 E. Peterson Road, Grayslake.

Standard vaccine, tag and microchip costs for the clinics are based on if the pet is spayed/neutered or not.

For pets that are spayed or neutered, prices are as follows: • One-year rabies vaccination and

Bridge rehabilitation project to cause long-term lane closure Bay Road Bridge construction starts in April

With construction targeted for Bay Road Bridge over the Lily Lake Drain, the McHenry County Division of Transportation has started placing signing and temporary traffic signals at the bridge this week, according to county officials.

“The existing structure will undergo a major rehabilitation consisting of removal and replacement of all deck beams and deck surface,” the Division of Transportation states.

“Work also includes structural con-

crete repairs at the abutments, as well as new approach pavement and landscaping to restore work areas.”

The project, according the Division of Transportation, will have an effect on traffic, notably between Chapel Hill and Cuhlman roads.

Officials said starting April 2, the affected road will be reduced to one lane, and run through October 26.

“Temporary traffic signals will be utilized to control traffic through the con-

struction zone,” officials state.

In early April, workers will begin the first stage of construction, which involves the north side of the bridge with the south lane open to traffic.

The first stage, which will run through July, also involves removing existing pavement and deck surfaces, replacing the north half of bridge beams and applying new concrete to the bridge deck.

Lake County Sheriff’s Office announces results of St. Patrick’s Day weekend enforcement

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office announced the results of a three-day St. Patrick’s Day DUI and Seat Belt Enforcement Weekend.

Results included four drunken driving arrests, 48 seat belt citations, 34 traffic citations and one nontraffic citation. A total of 86 traffic citations were written.

“The streets were a little safer during the St. Patrick’s Day holiday because of the local, state and federal DUI and Seat Belt enforcement campaign. Keeping drunk drivers off the roads and keeping

drivers and passengers buckled up saves lives,” Sheriff Mark Curran said.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office joined forces with other state and local law enforcement and highway safety partners in the Illinois St. Patrick’s Day crackdown.

The law enforcement campaign was funded by federal highway safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation as part of the statewide Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over and Click It or Ticket campaigns.

Gusty weather more winterlike than that of spring, due largely to wind chill temperatures in the low 20s, saw more participants wearing parkas and mittens than Easter bonnets. March 5 and continue to follow her north on Highway 67 into Fontana where the car rammed the back of her vehicle. Staver said she sped up to get away from the car, which also sped up, tailgated her through Fontana and then rammed her car again just past Wild Duck Road, according to the complaint.

Staver said she called 911 as she continued to drive on Highway 67 toward Williams Bay, and police advised her to go to the Mobil gas station where an officer would meet her, according to the complaint. Staver said when she approached the Mobil station, the other car blocked her from entering and she was able to

see the driver was her ex-husband, Nick Staver.

When an officer arrived, Nick Staver fled the scene in his car, and Williams Bay police pursued him. A Fontana officer also joined the pursuit, but the officers terminated the chase when Staver reached 107 mph at West Geneva Street and Theater Road, according to the complaint.

Slices of life

Crushing it in the world of aluminum cans My family goes through a few aluminum cans – OK, more than a few.

And even though we’ve always recycled and attempted to condense the cans the barehanded way, surplus metal was impacting our recycle bin in an overflowing manner. When the excess wouldn’t fit into the bin, the bags started piling up in the garage. I knew we were at a crossroads.

I was not a contributor to the pileup. I don’t drink carbonated beverages. But that fact had nothing to do with the issue confronting us. Even though I didn’t create the problem, it obviously was mine to solve. I knew we could do one of two

things: quit using aluminum cans or find a better way to compress them.

I choose door number two and fulfilled my destiny by ordering an industrialstrength can crusher.

The tool arrived and sat in its box on the kitchen table for a couple of days. I was busy with other things.

Besides, usually any household task requiring the word “installation” falls under my

husband’s authority.

On day two after crusher’s arrival, son number three removed it from its box and promptly lost or tossed the installation instructions.

(We’ll never know which.)

The next day, my observant husband spied the crusher.

I was right in the middle of making dinner – browning hamburger on the stove for chili. But matter that not!

We had a crusher to install, and everyone knows there’s no time like the present.

Besides, installation trumps supper prep any day of the week.

My husband’s first choice of location for the crushing station was in the garage, next to the doorway leading

into the house. He showed me the spot. Good choice.

Approval granted. I went back to my ground beef.

Less than a minute later he called my name. I begrudgingly left the halfbrowned meat to join him and his newest dilemma. He didn’t disappoint.

My stud hadn’t been able to find a wall stud, which hindered him from initiating the installation. He pointed to the half-dozen empty nail holes in the garage sheetrock to prove his point.

Then he suggested an alternate location for the installation: the wall on the opposite side of the garage.

How about over there?

I shook my head. I know

my boys, and as much as I anticipated them embracing the act of annihilating aluminum cans in a crusher, I knew the act had to be convenient. They weren’t going to take 10 extra steps to walk all the way across the garage just to crush a can.

I’m not being cruel, only honest.

My husband agreed.

Occasionally that happens between the two of us. Hamburger on hold and priorities in order, we explored our options. I decided to think outside the box – or in this case, the garage.

We went inside to the stair landing that leads to our basement. There was a spot on the wall that would work. My husband’s enthusiasm was reinvigorated. He embraced the new location.

I returned to dinner prep – for approximately three seconds. Then I was summoned. Again.

I took a deep breath because sometimes after lots of years of marriage you understand taking a deep breath
