‘Just In’ at the Antioch Public Library Venue continues to draw in community

The Antioch Public Library, 757 N. Main St., has been part of the community for decades, and has offered a variety of resources through the years.

The library staff strives to bring entertaining and informative programs to members year after year, with 2019 being no exception.

Upcoming events include a meet and greet with special needs rescue dog, Sadie. She has inspired the world with her motto, “All of us have special needs, but all of us have special abilities too.”

There is a documentary film and book about Sadie, and the event will be held 2 p.m.

March 31 and is open to all ages.

Stay tuned for National Library Week. Activities will include “book face” selfies, APLD’s first ever seed exchange, and all day drop-in events for patrons to learn about downloadable resources and how to install them on their electronic devices.

For comic book fans, the library will be hosting its first ever Mini-Con on May 4 in conjunction with Free Comic Book Day. Families are welcome to pick up a free comic book and participate in a multitude of fun activities.

The annual Summer

Reading Program will launch on June 8 to kick off summer, followed by a community wide scavenger hunt.

The Antioch Public Library offers many programs for all age groups. The children’s program provides activities for ages 0-12, and has seen substantial growth in the last 10 years.

“While some feel that libraries are a thing of the past, this couldn’t be further from the truth,” Jane Friess, head of Children’s Services said. “Now, more than ever, the community looks to the library as a gathering and learning space.”

The children’s program offers story time, math, language, science programs and much more.

Teens tune in For teenagers, there are book clubs, yoga, and computer programming classes. Teens can explore computer and game development programs as well as gaming and crafting clubs.

After hours gaming tournaments are held every other month, with the next one, a Super Smash Bros Tournament, on Friday, April 19. Xtreme Games of Antioch hosts a Pokemon league the second Saturday of each

Antioch spring cleanup day announced Event held May 16 only for village residents

The Village of Antioch Spring Clean‐up day will be held on Thursday, May 16, according to an announcement, indicating the event applies specifically to village residents.

“This service only applies to addresses located within the Village limits included in the Groot contract and does not include Antioch Township or Unincorporated Antioch areas,” the village states.

Items must be curbside by 6 a.m. and should be broken down so that any one person can handle the item and lift it into a truck.

Solid waste agency hosts oneday event

The Solid Waste Agency of Lake County (SWALCO) will be hosting a one day only special electronics recycling collection event for broken and unwanted electronics.

This one-day special event will be held on Tuesday, April 9 from 8:00 a.m. to noon at the Village of Lindenhurst Village Hall, 2301 E. Sand Lake Road, Lindenhurst.

Recycling fees will be assessed for televisions and cathode ray tube monitors ($35 for TV’s 21” and larger, $25 for TV’s 20” or smaller, and $25 for each cathode ray tube monitor) all other acceptable electronics will be collected at no cost.

Cash, check or major credit cards are accepted for payment of applicable recycling fees.

SWALCO routinely provides no cost opportunities for Lake County residents to recycle their broken or unwanted electronics from their homes through a network of drop off locations operating around Lake County.

However, State law limits these locations to accepting only residentially generated electronics.

County Gardenfest to feature moss garden expert Dale Sievert Learn new gardening tips

with a one-hour lecture on “The Sievert Moss Gardens— From 1970 until Today” by moss garden expert and author Dale Sievert, who is the keynote speaker at the 2019 McHenry County Gardenfest.

The Gardenfest takes place from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 6 at McHenry County College, 8900 U.S. Route 14, Crystal Lake.

Sievert, who grew up on a dairy farm in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, began constructing his gardens in 1970 and added mosses in 2005.

He writes for Sukiya Living magazine. His gardens appeared in Country Gardens, Chicagoland Gardening, and The American Gardener magazine. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in agronomy and a Master of Science in economics. He taught economics at Milwaukee Area Technical College for 29 years and simultaneously operated a part-time nursery/ landscape firm.

Chicago-based author Jessica Anne will read from her multi-genre book, “A Manual for Nothing,” at 7 p.m.

Thursday, April 4 in Room A013 at the College of Lake County’s Grayslake campus.

Anne also will offer a free, creative writing workshop on the same date from 3-4:30 p.m. in Room T332.

“A Manual For Nothing” (Noemi Press), which incorporates fiction, nonfiction, poetry and drama, is the story of a young girl who sets out to paint a portrait of her sexual identity and her artistic ability.

A nonfiction editor for MAKE Literary Magazine, Anne also serves as an artistic director for the magazine’s biannual Lit & Luz Festival, a celebration of literature and language held in Chicago and Mexico City.

She also co-produces Lit Crawl Chicago, a yearly festival in Andersonville showcasing Chicago’s literary scene.

Anne also is also an alumna of the Chicago NeoFuturist ensemble, an experimental theatre company.

During her tenure, she wrote, performed and directed more than 300 two minute plays for the late night smash, “Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind (30 Plays in 60 Minutes).”

Additionally, Anne is the creator, writer and performer of her one-woman show, “Mike Mother.”

A life-long Chicagoan, Anne holds a B.A. in English, creative writing emphasis, from North Park University and an M.F.A. in creative writing from Roosevelt University. For more information visit www.jessicaanne. me.

We are often asked what happens to the people we have helped. There are many answers to that question. Our hope is that our assistance provides a helping hand they need to be independent and successful in this world.

While that is not the case for everyone, it is for a good percentage of them. This week I thought we should revisit a few of these people to see how they’re doing.

• Eight years ago we helped a family living in a mobile home without heat.

The windows were broken and boarded, and the family huddled around the open oven on cold days to stay warm.

The children were sleeping together in deteriorated beds and lacked the daily necessities many of us take for granted. Yet, these kids were happy because they had loving parents and never felt they were lacking compared to what other families had.

An anonymous stranger wrote to us about them.

When I visited, this family they were humble and embarrassed. While the children had worn clothes and lived in rooms patched together, they did their best to stay clean. They did not have a washing machine or dryer. Clothing was hand washed in the bathtub with cold water after their utilities were disconnected. Clothing was drying on lines strung through several rooms of the trailer because it was too cold outside.

At first glance I knew their living conditions were not acceptable. It was impossible to maintain an acceptable level of hygiene without proper windows, hot running water and heat.

All of their belongings had been sold to try and prevent eviction, but even that drastic measure didn’t prevent them from becoming homeless.

The wife was cleaning motel rooms to help pay for their rent in addition to her part-time job. She was struggling with poor health and the physical labor from working seven days a week.

The stress was apparent when I met them. They cried when talking about the tragic chain of events that had created this situation. All they had left were several boxes of photos and their personal items. They had not been able to save anything else because they couldn’t afford a storage unit. The wife told me how sad she had been when driving past their previous rental several days after their eviction and seeing all of their belongings piled by the curb. She shared her great shame about getting out and taking a few items.

However, they are selfsufficient once more. After our help in getting them into a proper rental and finding a full-time job for the wife, the husband received the desperately needed surgery when he was eligible for Medicare the next year.

She continues to work and he does side jobs when he feels up to it. They have been enjoying the blessings of renewed health and living without the pains of poverty.

Their sad days of living in a motel are a dim memory.

We pray daily for the many people we help each year. Our hope is that they also can count themselves as success stories due to our assistance.

Gov. JB Pritzker, Acting IEMA Director Gen. Alicia Tate-Nadeau (ret) and several local elected officials and law enforcement representatives toured flooded areas of Winnebago and Stephenson counties, underscoring the state’s commitment to help communities rebuild.

“These are some of the highest river levels this area has seen in more than three decades, and I commend local emergency managers, law enforcement, fire and the volunteer organizations that have come together to keep people safe and preserve property,” said Gov. JB Pritzker.

“Here in Winnebago and Stephenson counties, we see how much good happens when neighbors help neighbors. For downstream communities that will be impacted by flooding in the days and weeks to come, I know that many groups are already preparing to help their neighbors. While we know that rebuilding will take a lot of time and work, we are committed to being your partners for the future.”

The State of Illinois continues to monitor fluctuating river levels up and down our state. These communities are no strangers to season flooding. Emergency crews in Winnebago and Stephenson County have been preparing for and fighting back floodwaters for several weeks.

As the rivers began to swell, nearly 200 residents heeded the warning of local officials to seek drier ground.

The American Red Cross continues to operate shelters for affected residents and serve meals to first responders working in the area.

On March 13, Gov. Pritzker directed the Illinois Emergency Management Agency to move the activation level of the State Emergency Operations Center to a Level 2 in order to expedite any state assistance or resource requests from local governments as they fight to protect their communities from rising floodwaters.

“While the rivers have crested, it will be several days before the water begins to recede,” said Acting IEMA Director Alicia Tate-Nadeau. “We will be working with local emergency management officials to assess the impact and determine how we can help them deal with this flooding.”

Emergency Management officials urge residents who have evacuated to wait for instructions from local officials before returning home. For more information on what to do before, during and after a flood, visit www.ready.illinois.gov.

PM&L Theatre to hold open auditions for ‘Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike’

Open auditions for “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike,” a comedy by Christopher Durang, will be held on Monday, April 8, and Tuesday, April 9 at 7 p.m. at PM&L Theatre’s Tribute Hall, 877 Main St., Antioch.

County clerk offers voting options for April 2 election With the April 2 election approaching, Lake County Clerk Robin O’Connor has reminded voters to exercise their constitutional rights by casting a ballot, according a news release.

“It’s never been easier to cast a ballot as you can choose the way you want to vote - by mail, early, or on Election Day - without any qualifying reasons or excuses,” the news release states.

Voting by Mail is an ideal choice for everyone as busy schedules or bad weather could stop people from getting to the voting site. Since a ballot can be mailed to any address, this option is especially helpful for snowbirds, students away at school, and those with little free time because of long hours at work.

Voters only need to walk as far as their mailbox to cast your ballot. Submit a simple electronic or paper application form to the Lake County Clerk’s office by noon Thursday. The ballot must be returned with a postmark no later than Election Day, and is trackable through a Lake County Clerk’s receipt online.

Early Voting continues through Saturday at all 16 early voting sites.

The Lake County Forest Preserves is looking for volunteers who enjoy fishing and spending time with children for the summer.

“We are seeking volunteers to assist with our popular summer fishing camps,” said Mark Hurley, volunteer coordinator at the Lake County Forest Preserves.

The 8-week camps, beginning

in June, are held in the mornings at Independence Grove Forest Preserve in Libertyville. Campers are eager to learn more about fish, bait, lures and techniques.

Hurley said he is looking for volunteers who have a passion for the sport and want to share their experience with children. Volunteers will be provided training on how the

camps are run and what they should be teaching the campers.

“The fishing camps are a tremendous opportunity for volunteers to share their knowledge with young, eager children wanting to learn the skill,” Hurley said.

Antioch police arrest one for drunken driving during safety campaign

While the Village of Antioch Police Department arrested one for drunken driving, according to a news release, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office did not during the St. Patrick’s Day weekend traffic safety campaign.

The Antioch Police Department, meanwhile, issued five seat belt citations in the same campaign.

For the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, deputies arrested seven people for driving with revoked or suspended driver’s licenses, issued 30 citations for speeding, and issued 52 seat belt citations.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office, along with the Village of Antioch Police Department, joined forces with state and local law enforcement and highway safety partners in the St. Patrick’s Day enforcement campaign.

The law enforcement campaign was funded by federal highway safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.

The orientation, physical agility test and written exam will take place on April 20.

Check in will begin at 8 a.m. and the orientation will begin at 9 a.m.

The exam will take place at Woodstock North High School, 3000 Raffel Road, Woodstock, Illinois. You will be required to show a State issued photo ID to check in.

For those planning to take the test, candidates must submit their application, $25 non-refundable application fee (checks made payable to County of McHenry), and required paperwork by 4:30 p.m. March 29.

Authorities arrest sex offender in Ingleside

The Lake County Sheriff’s Warrants Team along with the U.S. Marshals Service arrested an alleged noncompliant sex offender in Ingleside on March 19.

Daniel P. Pemrick, 63, a convicted sexual offender, previously of the 36300 block of Route 41, uninDaniel P. corporated Pemrick Gurnee, had an active arrest warrant ($250,000.00 bail) for failure to register as a sexual offender after he moved without notifying authorities.

An investigation led the authorities to a residence in the 35600 block of North Louise Place, Ingleside, where they located Pemrick.

He was arrested without incident, but found to be living in a home with a nine-yearold child.

In addition to the warrant, Pemrick was charged with another count of failure to register as a sexual offender (class 2 felony), for failing to disclose he was living with a child under the age of 18.

Sheriff’s K-9 team tracks, rescues hypothermic area woman

The Antioch Public Library District, 757 Main St., Antioch, unveiled a new feature to its children’s department earlier this month – a giant Connect Four game – and the library is inviting families to bring their children to join in.

Lake County Sheriff’s K-9 Dax and his partner, deputy John Forlenza, rescued a woman who had hypothermia following an extensive search on March 15.

The search, according to the Sheriff’s Office, happened after the woman was reported as missing and endangered by her family, who said she was in a severe mental health crisis.

K-9 Dax, along with Forlenza, were requested at around 11:20 p.m. to an address in the 200 block of North Route 12, Volo, to search for the missing endangered adult.

Further information revealed approximately one-hour prior to receiving the call, a 51-year-old female of Volo, had been in an argument with a family member, and was in a severe mental-crisis.

The argument occurred in a vehicle and she exited the vehicle in the 200 block of Route 12. After not walking home to her residence her family became concerned and contacted the Sheriff’s Office.

The temperature at the time

was approximately 37 degrees and the female was only wearing a sweatshirt, light-weight pants, and shoes.

Forlenza and his K-9 partner Dax arrived to conduct a track in an attempt to locate the female.

The family wasn’t able to remember the exact place the female exited the vehicle, which made the track difficult.

After approximately twohours of searching, the female was located sleeping outside, next to a business in the 31600 block of North Route 12, Lakemoor.

Authorities said she was confused and appeared to be suffering from the initial stages of hypothermia. The female was transported via ambulance to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment.

“With the delay in reporting and initial uncertainty of the path taken by the female, this tracked proved to be extremely difficult – but that certainly didn’t stop Deputy Forlenza and K-9 Dax,” said Sheriff John Idleburg.

I thought about all the things that are easy now but were hard, if not nearly impossible, 20 or 25 years ago. I came to the conclusion that I was glad to have the knowledge acquired over the years. I was glad to be where I am now – the who I am now instead of the who I was then.

This surprised me – this contentedness about time because I’ve always been one to fight time. I remember I didn’t want to be 30 because I didn’t want to grow older. Same goes for 40 and each year after that. I fought the number that defined my age because I didn’t like the direction it was going. I knew I was being irrational. But a girl feels what a girl feels and that’s where I was at.

I realize now at least part of it was because I didn’t want to be defined by merely age. Most of us measure our time on this earth by the number of days and months and years that we are living and breathing on it.

I propose we try something different. A change in perspective, you might say.

Instead of being 35 for the 15th consecutive year, how about we describe the measurement of our lifespan in the number of sunsets we’ve shared with our spouse? Or the vastness of the love we feel for our children? The number of lives we have nurtured? The pounds of strawberries we’ve eaten throughout a lifetime?

How many breakfasts we’ve made for our kids

before school so they will start the day out right? The number of dogs (or cats or guinea pigs) we’ve had the privilege of loving? How the taste of chocolate never gets old? The sum total of compliments we’ve received – ever? Double ditto that for compliments given?

The times when we offered kindness to a stranger and it literally made our heart gush? The simple but miraculous act of breathing in and out? How many doors we’ve held open for others?

The good we’ve done. Life connections we’ve made?

Waking up and feeling good?

The fact that this life never gets old?

I’ve always run from my age because I guess I think age is limiting. I don’t want to be defined by something that is limiting.

But yesterday, in the kitchen, while I was practically up to my elbows in meatball goo, I realized I’m only limiting myself. It’s my choice. And I choose meatballs, among other things.

If you want to put a number on me, I figure I’ve made upward of at least 5,000 meatballs over the last two decades. Let’s go with that. It has a nice and even ring to it.

Lake County announces $134 million in projects for 2019 construction program

Spring has officially started and that means it’s time to start road construction here in Lake County.

The Lake County Division of Transportation (LCDOT) has already begun working on a few of the 29 projects identified for this road construction season.

In 2019, Lake County will have nearly $137 million in road projects under construction, some are carried over from last year, and the program includes 22 new projects such as: Weiland Road: Project limits are north of Lake Cook Rd to south of Deerfield Pkwy in Buffalo Grove. This is a reconstruction and widening of Weiland Road. Starting later in the year, LCDOT will kick off the next piece of Weiland

Road construction from Deerfield Parkway to Aptakisic Road.

Hunt Club Road at IL 132 (Grand Ave): Intersection improvement to add right turn lanes from eastbound IL 132 to southbound Hunt Club Rd, and from southbound Hunt Club Rd to westbound IL 132, as well as dual left turn lanes from Hunt Club Rd to IL 132.

Old McHenry Road at US 12: Intersection improvement to add dual left turn lanes from southbound US 12 onto eastbound Old McHenry Rd. “The County Board understands that investing in transportation is a quality-of-life issue for residents and that it contributes to economic development and the efficient movement of goods and services for our businesses,”

Lake County Board Chairperson Sandy Hart said.

“We are investing more than $500 million in the transportation system over the next six years, which includes bike paths and other non-motorized investments, not just roads. We also continue to advocate for the state to invest in needed capacity and repairs on the state highway system here in Lake County.”

In addition to the new projects, work will continue on the Old McHenry Road project, the Wilson Road and Nippersink Road project, the Quentin Road project, and the Millburn Bypass.

The Old McHenry Road project includes pavement reconstruction and resurfacing and a new signalized intersection, along with pedestrian ac-

commodations and drainage improvements.

At Wilson Road and Nippersink Road, work includes pavement reconstruction and a new signalized intersection, along with a shared-use path and a retaining wall.

The Quentin Road project will reconstruct and widen the road from White Pine Rd to IL 22 and include a noise barrier wall and bike path. Construction will also continue on IDOT’s Millburn Bypass project, which is funded by LCDOT. Also on the schedule for this year, there will be several operational improvement projects, including intersection improvements, traffic signal work, and additional bike path and pedestrian accommodations.
