County volunteers to help the needy About 150 Lake County employees, elected officials and their family members volunteered their time to help undernourished children at Feed My Starving Children in Libertyville on March 5. Feed My Starving Children, founded in 1987, is a Christian non-profit organization that provides nutritionally balanced meals specially formulated for children in need. “Through God, FMSC will strive to eliminate malnutrition and starvation in children throughout the world by helping to instill compassion in a generation that hears and responds to the cries of those in need until all are fed,” the non-profit organization’s vision states. The non-profit organization used donation proceeds to fund the meal ingredients. From there, volunteers hand-pack the meals, which are donated to food partners worldwide. Meals include rice, soy, dried vegetables and a nutritionally complete blend of vitamins and minerals into bags, which are then sealed, boxed, placed on pallets and shipped to agencies. As for the volunteers, they filled 150 boxes, which will feed about 88 children for the entire year. The Libertyville site, which opened in November 2002, is one of several facilities in the United States. Other states include Arizona, Minnesota and Texas. Feed My Starving Children sends its boxed meals, known as MannaPacks, to Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Europe, Middle East, North and Central America along with South America. In 2017, the non-profit organization reports nearly 1.2 million volunteers packed more than 333 million meals. The cost of each meal is less than 25 cents and $80 can feed a child for a year, according to the organization.

Associate judge retires from the bench
Following a career of distinguished public service spanning more than half a century, Judge John J. Scully retired as Associate Judge from the Lake County Bench. “As Judge Scully retires from the bench after 10 years, his lifetime record of achievement speaks volumes about his character and his John J. Scully service in the public arena,” said Chief Judge Jay W. Ukena. “Judge Scully’s noteworthy body of work includes active duty with United States Navy, a Vietnam War veteran, a JAG Officer, a United States Naval Reserve Intelligence Officer and Analyst, an Assistant State’s Attorney with Lake County, an Assistant US Attorney prosecuting some of the most high-profile cases out of the Chicago office, a business law instructor at the College of Lake County, and finally an Associate Judge for the Nineteenth Judicial Circuit. John has provided exemplary service encompassing national, state, and local levels,” added the Chief Judge. Scully is a graduate of the United States Naval Academy and University of San Diego School of Law, graduating with honors in 1974. He was
