Floral club brightens local community Program seeks to share knowledge By Sandra Landen Machaj CORRESPONDENT
In every community, there are groups created to bring like-minded people together for their own benefit, along with the community they serve. One group in McHenry is the McHenry Garden Club, which launched in 2004 by Marita Sension. The club started with a few friends who came together to share garden tips, and now has a membership of close to 40. A member is involved in a variety of activities that add beauty to the community, teach others of all ages about gardening, and bring the joy of flowers to those suffering from illness. As a social group, the members hold monthly meetings and host speakers who share their knowledge of gardening with the group. Community dedication Among the club’s programs are the formation of a Garden Club at McHenry West High School, acknowledging a garden of the month from the community, providing flowers for those in Hospice, and planting a tree for Arbor Day. president, that was a very rewarding program and was appreciated by the veterans and enjoyed by the volunteers. One of the largest planting programs that the club has undertaken was installation of plants around the historic Colby-Petersen Farmhouse, where bright flowers revived the historic site in the summer. They have been involved in the planting of vegetable gardens on site, including the historic Three Sisters Garden, where they planted beans, corn and squash together. For those who have noticed the plantings around the signs entering McHenry on Highway 120, they were the work of the Garden Club, which is now maintained by the city of McHenry. Other sites are also being pursued, Schiller said.

Late Sunday afternoon, Steve Smouse, who served as Antioch Township Supervisor since 1999, died from an aggressive cancer at Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital in Milwaukee. He was surrounded by family. Liz Heffernan, Smouse’s s e c r e t a r y, said the town supervisor was well liked. “I have received many phone calls today. Steve was muchloved,” Hef- Steve Smouse fernan said. On Oct. 19, Smouse went to see his cardiologist at Columbia St. Mary’s for what he thought was a heart issue. Instead, doctors discovered a particularly aggressive form of cancer. Smouse never left the hospital. He was re-elected as Antioch Township supervisor last spring. It was common to see Smouse manning a snowplow in the winter and mowing the
