Late supervisor devoted to community
Smouse, 65, held post since 1999 By Gail Peckler-Dziki CORRESPONDENT
Due to overcast skies and chilly temperatures, Lindenhurst officials brought Saturday’s Veterans Day observance indoors, but there was still plenty of activity inside the Public Works Building near the Veterans Memorial, 2301 E. Sand Lake Road, Lindenhurst. Top: Guest speaker Capt. James D. Hawkins, Commanding Officer of the Naval Station in Great Lakes delivers an address. Left: First graders from B.J. Stephen D. Smouse was 65 years old when he passed away suddenly on Nov. 6 at Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital in Milwaukee. He was born to the late Kenneth and Elizabeth “Betty” Smouse on May 22, 1952 in Ottawa, Ill., his obituary Steve Smouse read. In 1952, the family, which included brother Jeff, moved to Antioch. He attended Antioch Grade School and graduated from Antioch Community High School in 1970. Smouse attended Millikin University, Decatur, Ill. and Carthage College in Kenosha, Wis. before graduating in 1978 from Worsham College of Mortuary Science in Chicago. He worked for Strang Funeral Home, becoming manager. Steve was also president of the Hillside Cemetery and maintained it. Smouse earned his pilot’s license in 1982 and kept it until just recently. He also maintained his paramedic license.
He was elected Antioch Township trustee in 1997. He ran for supervisor in 1999, won that election and held the position until his death. As Township supervisor, Smouse was instrumental in building the Antioch-Lake Villa Township Center in cooperation with the two townships and Antioch Community High School District 117. Steve also obtained several grants from the state of Illinois to purchase property to develop Tim Osmond Sports Park in Antioch. His careful managing of township finances assured money was available for matching grants. He began the tri-township bus with Lake Villa and Grant Townships that provided senior transportation. He held several FEMA certifications through the command and general staff levels. Smouse was a member of several professional organizations, including Illinois Township Officials Association, Illinois Township Supervisors Association, Antioch Hillside Cemetary Association, Antioch Historical Society, Antioch Rotary Club,
