The second Continental Congress chose the bald eagle to be on the emblem of the United States on June 20, 1782, and since then, it has been a prominent symbol for American citizens.

The eagle symbol has appeared on both the presidential seal and the great seal of the United States.

The eagle was chosen to appear on the national emblem because of its unique qualities, including great strength, majestic looks and its propensity to live a long life.

Originally, the eagle was found flourishing in the Midwest, where they have chosen to live along rivers. They are opportunist feeders with a diet consisting mostly of fish.

Because they prefer fish, eagles are often seen around dams or where the water body is shallow, which allows them to swoop down and catch the fish with their claws.

When they swoop down, according to National Geographic, they reach speeds of up to 100 mph to attack.

While fish is their favorite food, they will also eat small mammals, waterfowl and dead animals. Small prey are swallowed whole, while with larger food they tear small pieces off larger prey with their beaks.

Eagles build large nests near the top of the highest trees to protect their young eaglets

from being attacked by other predators. The nests are about 4-feet wide and 3-feet or more deep and weigh hundreds of pounds.

Eagles, which are believed to mate for life, lay one to four eggs between February and March. The eggs are incubated for 35 days before hatching, and in turn, the eaglets leave the nest in 12 weeks. Eagles have a life span of 20 to 30 years.

While known as the bald eagle, they actually have white-headed fur. Mature birds are brown with white feathers on their heads and tails.

Bird watchers enjoy searching for bald eagles, especially at this time of year, when they are seen mostly around the dams. They weigh between 8 to 14 pounds with a wingspan of up to 6 feet.

Area group explores Annually, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Friends of Hackmatack Wildlife Refuge, Illinois Department of Natural Resources, the McHenry Audubon Society and the McHenry Conservation District sponsor a morning of eagle watching at various spots.

On a recent Saturday morning, volunteers from these agencies could be found at stations along the Fox River and at a beach in Fontana.

The second Continental Congress chose the bald eagle to be on the emblem of the United States on June 20, 1782, and since then, the bald eagle has been a prominent symbol for American citizens.

The eagle symbol has appeared on both the presidential seal and the great seal of the United States.

The eagle was chosen to appear on the national emblem because of its unique qualities including great strength, majestic looks, and its propensity to live a long life.

Originally, the eagle was found flourishing in the Midwest, where they have chosen to live along rivers. They are opportunist feeders with a diet consisting mostly of fish.

Since they prefer fish, eagles are often seen around dams, or where the water body is shallow, which allows them to swoop down and catch the fish with their claws.

When they swoop down, according to National Geographic, they reach speeds of up to 100 mph to attack.

While fish is their favorite food, they will also eat small mammals, waterfowl, and dead animals. Small prey are swallowed whole, while with larger food they tear small pieces off larger prey with their beaks.

Eagles build large nests near the top of the highest trees to protect their young eaglets

from being attacked by other predators. The nests are about 4-feet wide and 3-feet or more deep and weigh hundreds of pounds.

Eagles, which are believed to mate for life, lay one to four eggs between February and March. The eggs are incubated for 35 days before hatching, and in turn, the eaglets leave the nest in 12 weeks. Eagles have a life span of 20 to 30 years.

While known as the bald eagle, they actually have white-headed fur. Mature birds are brown with white feathers on their heads and tails.

Bird watchers enjoy searching for bald eagles, especially at this time of year, when they are seen mostly around the dams. They weigh between 8 to 14 pounds with a wingspan of up to 6-feet long.

Area group explores Annually, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Friends of Hackmatack Wildlife Refuge, Illinois Department of Natural Resources, the McHenry Audubon Society and the McHenry Conservation District sponsor a morning of eagle watching at various spots.

On a recent Saturday morning, volunteers from these agencies could be found at stations along the Fox River and at a beach in Fontana.

The LGSO will host its annual Gala at the Riviera Ballroom in Lake Geneva at 6:30 p.m., Feb. 10, with the theme, “Set the Stage.” The evening features music, dancing to a live big band, hors d’oeuvres, wine and beer, a photo booth, and a silent auction.

During this year’s Gala the LGSO will perform a short concert of selections from movies, Broadway, TV, ballet, and opera, including music from Les Miserables, Star Trek, Game of Thrones, and Tchaikovky’s Sleeping Beauty.

Adding to the fun of the evening, the LGSO Swing Band will make its once-a- year appearance, with vocalist John Puleo.

Included among the activities of the LGSO are live performances in elementary schools, the sponsorship of educational programs by visiting musicians, and an annual Young Artist Competition.

Verdict came down to who jury believed Schoonover brothers found guilty of sexually assaulting boy

With no physical evidence, the jury’s decision in a sexual assault case against two Lake Geneva brothers came down to who jurors believed was telling the truth, attorneys said. “(The victim) is not lying,” assistant district attorney Diane Donohoo said in her closing arguments Jan. 24.

“Someone else is the one who is.”

A guilty verdict on five felony counts, returned less than two hours after the jury began deliberating, indicated jurors agreed.

They found Brady T. Schoonover, 22, and Tayler A. Schoonover, 24, guilty of five counts of sexually assaulting a now-16-year-old boy in Pell Lake five to seven years ago.

“The Illinois sites were the McHenry Dam, the Algonquin Dam, and in Carpentersville,” said David Miller, a volunteer at the McHenry County Conservation Center and with the Friends of Hackmatack.

The volunteers stationed at each site are equipped with a telescope and some binoculars for the spectators to observe not only the eagles but also other birds in the area.

“Here at the McHenry Dam only one eagle made an appearance about 8:15 a.m. before most of the visitors who came to observe arrived.

It flew into the McHenry dam area along the Fox and then headed down toward Algonquin,” Miller said.

The eagles head south from upper Wisconsin as the rivers freeze up for the winter.

According to Miller, they head south following the frozen waterways until they come to a dam.

“The water around the dam is open water and the fish are closer to the surface, easier to pick them out,” he said.

They continue traveling

south until the weather begins to warm and the ice melts, then they make their way north again and disperse throughout the area, Miller added.

Miller said larger eagle sightings have occurred further south, including 20 near Starved Rock, and 125 to 150 near the armory in Rock Island.

While eagles have started to flourish, it was not the case in the late 20th century, when the birds were on the brink of extinction.

The population decline is attributed to hunting and persistent pesticides, like DDT. Since then, DDT usage was banned, along with shooting and hunting of the birds.

With new restrictions, the bald eagle started increasing around the 1970s.

In 1995, officials removed the eagle from the endangered list and placed the bird on the threatened list.

About 12 years later, the population showed improvement and was taken off the threatened species list.

Defense attorneys argued that the victim could not be believed because two points in his testimony couldn’t be rectified – his assertion that he was physically, mentally and sexually abused by the Schoonover brothers until he

Annual musical event brings feeder schools together Band-O-Rama packed Westosha Central Saturday

Before a packed Westosha Central High School gymnasium, more than 400 students from five schools performed music ranging from the National Anthem to pop during Saturday’s annual Band-O-Rama.

The multiple school performance, according to Westosha Central band director Adam Scheele, has been a fixture for at least 25 years.

Along with Westosha Central’s Jazz Central and CSS Wind Ensemble, students in grades 5 through 8 from schools in Bristol, Brighton, Salem and Paris participated.

Scheele, who said about 436 total students were involved, believes the annual event bolsters the bond between Westosha Central and the feeder schools.

“I like the fact that I get to work with the grade schools,” Scheele said. “Also, it is great to see all of the other feeder schools come together.”

In the later performance, which followed the production by students in grades 5 and 6, the 5:30 p.m. presentation kicked off with a pre-performance by Westosha Central’s Jazz Central.

Scheele then directed the seventh and eighth grade bands in the “Star Spangled Banner” before the Brighton/Paris Jazz Ensemble presented “A Blues to Grow”

by Dean Sorenson under direction of Ben Warmuth.

Bristol’s band director John Murphy,

who directed the seventh grade band in performances of “Barn Burner” by Michael Story and Johnnie Vinson’s “The Incredibles”, also guided his school’s Advanced Jazz Ensemble in the group’s delivery of Justin Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop the Feeling.”

Scheele, meanwhile, worked with the eighth grade band in delivering two songs, John Prescott’s “Aliens Landing” followed

by Todd Stalter’s “Lightning!”

Additionally, Scheele directed Jazz Central in “Nola Roller” by Roger Schmidt and Westosha Central’s Wind Ensemble in a classic remix of Beethoven written by Randall Standridge.

For Salem’s Jazz Ensemble, the group presented “Hit the Road Jack” by Mike Lewis, which was directed by their school band director Heidi Anderson.

The annual collaboration, said Scheele, took at least two months to perfect.

“The students worked on this for a couple of months,” he said. “They worked and rehearsed together.”

The bands, however, intensified their efforts following holiday break.

“Once they got back from break, they worked on it more extensively,” Scheele said.

Meanwhile, before the older students showcased their skills, younger students made an appearance at the 4 p.m. production.

Including students, about 1,500 to 2,000 people were in attendance during both performances on Saturday.

The McHenry Township has opened its sledding hill for winter fun at McHenry Township Park, 3703 North Richmond Road, Johnsburg.

The sledding hill will be opened throughout the winter season until 10 p.m. as long as weather permits. There must be at least six inches of snow and no grass visible for the hill to be open. Signs will be posted if the hill is closed.

The Antioch village board unanimously approved an ordinance for the first amendment to the redevelopment plan and project area for the Antioch Corporate Center redevelopment area at a special meeting held at 7 p.m., prior to the Jan. 24 regular board meeting. Trustee Scott Pierce attended remotely and Ted Poulos arrived late.

The amendment changed the date of the 10 a.m. Feb. 6 meeting of the Tax Incremental Fund District meeting to 7 p.m. March 12.

Village Administrator Jim Keim also issued an update on village development, which will be given to area school districts. The report included both residential and commercial/light industrial and information about the tax incremental fund district developments.

The equalized assessed value (EAV) is frozen for 23 years and the taxing bodies receive taxes based on those frozen rates.

The increases in taxes on

the property is used for specific public improvements like roads, water and sewer infrastructure. At the end of the TIF, any remaining taxes are distributed to the taxing bodies and the taxing bodies will begin receiving the new, higher rate.

Keim reported that the new development in the Antioch Corporate Center TIF could generate more than $20 million in increment. Along with the current building as estimated total of over $35 million could be generated it that area.

Antioch Corporate Center building B is a new manufacturing and distribution building estimated at more than $73 million and could create 366 construction and 600 factory jobs.

The local and state taxes expected from this venture are estimated at $85 million over the next 10 years.

No estimates were available for those commercial/industrial districts were available. Those include the new TIF along North Grimm Road, the Ford expansion and Tractor Supply.

Sledding hill open for winter season

The McHenry Township has opened its sledding hill for winter fun at McHenry Township Park, 3703 North Richmond Road, Johnsburg.

The area includes a bunny hill for children, a path with railings for walking, fences around the sledding area and an enclosed winter shelter.

The sledding hill will be opened throughout the winter season until 10 p.m. as long as weather permits.

There must be at least six inches of snow and no grass visible for the hill to be open. Signs will be posted if the hill is closed.

This sledding hill is for people of all ages. Children must be supervised by an adult.

The area is patrolled by the Johnsburg Police.

NJHS donates to Children’s Hospital

In recent years, Lakewood School in Twin Lakes went without a dance, until a group of dedicated National Junior Honors Society students made one possible last December.

The dedication, which also involved raising funds during basketball games, showed on Jan. 29 when the dozen students presented a check for $700 to the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin Cancer Care Fund.

Brenna Larson, a Children’s Hospital representative, said the student group’s fundraiser is amazing.

“It is truly incredible, especially when kids are coming together to help other kids,” said Larson, who serves as an events assistant for hospital’s foundation. “The amount they raised is amazing and shows their incredible dedication.”

The school’s two NJHS coadvisors, Missy Olson and Sheryl Camacho, reports the students started collaborating on the dance as part of the organization’s community service project.

Camacho, who also serves as a Response to Intervention teacher, said NJHS students chose Children’s Hospital as the beneficiary by a vote.

“They had to do a service project, so they wanted to do a fundraiser,” Camacho said. “Then they all voted for it and decided it would be the cancer fund for the hospital.”

Since the students were given discretion, Olson believes the group took ownership of the project, which included several responsibilities.

Responsibilities involved planning, compiling a song list, and reaching out to other feeder schools about the dance.

“Lakewood hasn’t had a dance in many, many years, so a lot of planning went in to that,” Olson said. “They got the playlist together, got all of the volunteers together to collect money, so that took a lot of time.”

Olson said NJHS students volunteered to run concession stands for the last two months during basketball games.

Meanwhile, according to Camacho, the students decorated the gymnasium before the dance.

Aside from the recent contribution to Children’s Hospital, the NJHS students have conducted other community service events, including babysitting and helping with the school’s annual Easter egg event.

Larson reports the hospital will apply the donation to services involving cancer care for children.

Slices of life

Kindness is the answer we’re looking for Life is hard. I’ve told my kids this dozens of times.

I’m not trying to be a Debby Downer parent, but I do think I owe them honesty. And honestly, life is hard.

I think it’s supposed to be.

What we get caught up in, sometimes, is thinking that life is hard for only us.

We see smiling faces on Facebook. People are taking exotic vacations, going to posh parties, eating at fancy restaurants and attending concerts and sporting events far beyond what our budget would allow.

Not everyone makes the team. Not every interview ends in employment. Love doesn’t always work out in the end. The scale never lies, and that can suck.

Sometimes there are more bills than paycheck. Illness rears its ugly head at the most inopportune of times.

Cars break down. People can be judgmental and even cruel. The weather hardly ever cooperates with our own life plans. Parenting is hard.

Marriage is hard. Adulting is hard.

Life, my friends, is hard.

And although I usually try to refrain from handing out unsolicited advice, I have something to say about this particular subject. Not about when life is hard for us, but about when life is

hard for others. Because it is. Even though they may not talk about it, post it on Facebook or even show it.

People struggle. You know it because you live it. But I’m not here to make life easier for us. I’m here to make like easier for them.

My message is basic, but ramifications and outcomes can be complex.

Be kind.

It’s a simple concept and not at all hard to implement yet we ignore opportunities for kindness all the time.

Me included. We get busy or self-focused. We’ve got problems of our own and don’t have time or energy to reach out to others. But we should.

It’s cliché, but kindness can cure many of the problems in our world. A kind word at the right time can do wonders. A kind gesture just might be the bright spot to someone’s day. And you don’t even have to know the person you reach out to. Kindness works on strangers as well

as friends. It even works on spouses. Crazy, I know!

We all have the ability and authority to choose kindness, yet I fear many of us don’t ponder this key fact on a daily, or weekly or ever basis. Especially and most consequentially with our spouses.

Kindness, however small or large, can have excruciatingly significant positive outcomes. First, it causes us to put someone else’s needs before our own. It takes the focus off “me” and puts it on “we.”

• Verdict

In my humble opinion we need more of this in our self-focused, self-esteemed, overly entitled culture.

Kindness brings about a shift in perspective. An anonymous warm body becomes a human being – a relevant human being.

Someone with wants and needs and pain and desire – just like us. That brings with it another shift.

When someone is like us, it is difficult to be critical.

Kindness is basically incompatible with passing judgment on someone. Talk

the boy to perform sex acts on him. He said Brady Schoonover hit him once after he failed to perform to Brady’s satisfaction.

When boy revealed the abuse in 2016, Donohoo said, he didn’t use the adult terms for the sex acts – another indication, she said, that his account is believable.

“He’s just a kid telling it in a kid way,” she said.

The boy testified to the last incident of sexual assault that he could recall – when Brady Schoonover sodomized him.

“I let out a huge scream because it was very painful,” he said.

not recall his mother being at the home when the assault occurred, but his mother testified that she heard the scream, went into the bathroom and saw her son and Brady Schoonover there, and the boy looked at her in a way that indicated he wanted to tell her something, Brady Schoonover’s defense attorney Michael Murphy said.

Murphy said the boy never testified that his mother was there or that their eyes met.

Frost told the jury that to find Brady and Tayler Schoonover guilty on those charges, it must have evidence that the Schoonovers showed the boy pornography or required the girl to show her genitals to derive sexual gratification for themselves or degrade the boy or girl. Frost said the state made no attempt to prove that element of those crimes.

Brady and Tayler Schoonover are scheduled to be sentenced April 2. They face a maximum of 180 years and 120 years in prison respectively.
