Lake County Sheriff promotes two members of Sheriff’s Office Lake County Sheriff John Idleburg announced the promotion of two Lake County Sheriff’s Office employees, which took effect on Jan. 30.

Corrections Lieutenant William Thornton was promoted to Corrections Deputy Chief and Deputy Ari Briskman was promoted to Sergeant.

William began his career with the Lake County Sheriff’s Office in November of 2006, shortly after retiring after a 20-year career with the U.S. Marine Corps. In September of 2012, William was promoted to Corrections Sergeant. In 2015, William attended the prestigious Northwestern University Center for Public Safety’s School of Police Staff and Command. He was then promoted to Corrections Lieutenant in 2016.

William has been an inspirational leader to his colleagues at the Lake County Sheriff’s Office and serves on the Corrections Response Team as well as the Lake County Sheriff’s Honor Guard. In his new position, he will oversee the day-to-day administrative functions of the Lake County Jail.

Ari joined the Lake County Sheriff’s Office in 2014 after serving as a police officer for Antioch and Round Lake Park Police Departments. Nearly 17 years ago, Ari’s first law-enforcement experience was as an Explorer with the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

Ari has been assigned to Highway Patrol while holding the following specialties and certifications: Field Training Officer, Traffic Crash Investigator and Reconstructionist, Evidence Technician, Drug Recognition Expert-Instructor, Standardized Field Sobriety Test Instructor and Explorer Post advisor.

Ari has received numerous commendations and awards throughout his career including six Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists Top Cop DUI Enforcement awards, Mothers Against Drunk Driving Top DUI Officer award and the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Lifesaving Award.

Ari will continue to be assigned to Highway Patrol as a shift-supervisor.

Veteran Community Partner Network assembles diverse program supporting veterans and their families The Veteran Community growth.

Partner Network recently held its bi-monthly meeting, including a “thank you” luncheon to the member partners from Lake County Veterans and Family Services Foundation. Veteran Affairs Canada, Veterans Affair and Illinois Joining Forces all had representatives attending, including the James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center new Director Dr. Robert Buckley.

The Veteran Community Partner Network is the Northeastern Illinois Region of MyVA Community Veteran Engagement Board for the Lovell Health Care Center catchment area, and also serves as the Illinois Joining Forces Northern Region Veteran Support Community group.

Using the common name of Veteran Community Partner Network allows member organizations to serve in all capacities: as individual organizations doing the work; as a local network that collaborates and supports one another in that work and as the consortium that the Veterans Affair and Illinois Joining Forces can count on to keep their missions for the region alive at the community level.

Lake County Veterans and Family Services Foundation is the backbone organization for the collective, inviting resources of any kind to join, facilitating meetings, maintaining communication between members and encouraging continued

Gathering all the local organizations who serve the military population and educating others to join in this effort has resulted in a current membership of over 80 programs that collaborate with and support the traditional resources of the VA and Great Lakes. Member organizations bring expertise in most every area, including employment, legal, housing, education, physical and mental health and alternative therapies.

Members include the Veterans Assistance Commission, Veterans of Foreign War, American Legion and other long established Veteran support systems.

“Anyone who has something to offer is welcome to join. We meet to share information across organizational boundaries to continue to build the strongest network possible in both counties as well as southern Kenosha and Northern Cook counties,” said Lake County Veterans and Family Services Foundation Director of Community Development and Board Member M.J. Hodgins.

“It has been the vision from the beginning that the community could and should be a place where those who serve and have served, and their loved ones, can be supported and assisted, so they have a choice and there are no barriers to receiving care,” said Hodgins.

Wanted, armed Spring Grove man arrested after shooting pellet gun A 60-yearold Spring Grove man was arrested following a report of someone who had been assaulted with an Stephen J. air rifle on Clarke Jan. 27, according to a Lake County Sheriff’s Office press release.

According to the release, at approximately 5:15 p.m. the Lake County Sheriff’s Office received a call from someone who had just been assaulted with an air rifle in the 39200 block of North Jackson Drive, unincorporated Spring Grove.

Sheriff’s Deputies arrived and determined the 22-yearold male victim was walking his dog in the area when a man, later identified as Stephen J. Clarke, 60, of the 39200 block of North Jackson Drive, shouted, “this is private property,” and shot an air rifle projectile toward the victim.

The victim left the area and dialed 911. Sheriff’s Deputies arrived at Clarke’s residence and were initially told Clarke was not home by other occupants in the house.

An additional responding Sheriff’s Deputy observed Clarke inside the home

through a window. Sheriff’s Deputies learned Clarke was also wanted on two active Lake County arrest warrants for violating an order of protection, according to the release.

“Sheriff’s Deputies entered the home, with the assistance of Fox Lake Police Officers, and found Clarke in a back bedroom armed with a knife,” the release stated.

According to the release, Clarke refused multiple requests to drop the knife and was subsequently tased. He was then taken into custody without further incident. He was transported to Northern Illinois Medical Center, McHenry, for evaluation and released back into the custody of Sheriff’s Deputies.

Clarke was transported to the Lake County Jail and subsequently charged with: • Two counts of aggravated assault, class four felonies • Aggravated assault, class A misdemeanor • Resisting a peace officer, class A misdemeanor • Unlawful use of a weapon, class A misdemeanor • Disorderly conduct, class A misdemeanor Lake County Sheriff Idleburg reminds the public all defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.

Parenting never changes; it’s a 24/7 responsibility

My husband and I did it.

Many of us did. We jumped into the deep end and never looked back.

Just keep swimming. We did. Lap after lap. From low tide to high.

Now we find ourselves not in the water but poolside, beachside. Watching. And this time around it’s different.

Because it isn’t us swimming upstream. This time we serve as witnesses to the action.

Sometimes this new role feels even more intense than living it out personally.

Of course it isn’t. But we are reliving the past and wondering just how the heck we did it. We aren’t

superheroes or superhuman, but somehow we eked it out.

Now our daughter and her husband are doing the same.

Doing what so many of us have been doing since the beginning of time. Adam and Eve had their Cain and Abel.

Lucy and Desi had Desi and Lucie. Lois and Peter have baby Stewie. Carol and Mike Brady had a whole bunch.

Sierra Club outing to Nachusa Grasslands Sierra Club members and friends will meet at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 23, for hiking at the Nachusa Grasslands, 2075 Lowden Road, Franklin Grove.

This is a 3,800 acre preserve owned and managed by The Nature Conservancy, where volunteers have spent 200,000 hours clearing invasive species and reintroducing native grassland plants. Attendees will hike trails that take them to places where the 100 or so reintroduced bison may be glimpsed. Binoculars are suggested.

There are also several Illinois state parks nearby, if the hiking at this preserve doesn’t keep the group busy long enough.

Attendees will meet at 9 a.m. at the Antioch Public Library, 757 N. Main St., Antioch, and carpool to Franklin Grove. Guests must bring a lunch, and they will take a break at the visitors center at Nachusa to eat. There are no dining facilities at this preserve, but there are restrooms.

Parenthood. The future wouldn’t exist without it.

But it is hard, sometimes.

Oh, lots of times it is hard.

And I’m reliving it just a bit through my daughter and sonin-law.

First a caveat: She and her husband are infinitely glad for the privilege to be parents.

They wouldn’t give it up for the world. Neither would I. This grand parenting gig is pretty sweet. Our gorgeous granddaughter is beyond sweet.

Still, it is a 24/7 job, and I don’t think anything can ever prepare you for that. Is it worth the 24/7 commitment?

Undoubtedly. Unequivocally.

Without hesitation. Onehundred percent yes, yes and yes!

But babies come with just

a small amount of baggage, and I mean that in the literal sense. When the young family comes to visit us, they require a travel trailer to haul all the gear needed to clothe, diaper, occupy, nurture, feed and otherwise keep a baby alive and happy for the afternoon. I was kidding about the travel trailer part, but you get my gist.

Numerous inventions have been invented since I was in the baby business.

I’ve recently learned about the importance of things like boppies and white noise machines; sensory balls and books; weighted sleepers, smart socks and a product aptly named the SnotSucker. I kid you snot.

There’s one thing that hasn’t changed much:

diapers. Babies still fill theirs with the most appealing of substances. They are messy little beings, and I’m not just talking about lunchtime.

When my daughter and her hubby aren’t tracking baby’s poop progress on a handy baby cellphone app they are doing what compelled my actions and consumed my every waking moment for at least 21 of the last 27 years: pursuing the elusive state of sleep.

Oh, the treasured eight consecutive hours of a good night’s sleep that you don’t value until it is no more.

Beautiful baby granddaughter is teething (we suspect) and getting up a few times in the middle of the night. Despite the teething medication, she’s probably in pain. She’d rather

be sleeping peacefully. We all understand that. She doesn’t want to cry out in the middle of the night.

But she is tiny. And helpless. And when she wakes up in pain, the only resource she has is her lungs.

The only language she has is crying. The only comfort she has is her parents. Well, that and the weighted sleeper and white noise machine.

And the boppy. Let’s not forget the boppy.

Lake County Health Department advises increased awareness of hepatitis A The Lake County Health Department is informing the public that there has been a recent increase in reported cases of hepatitis A virus throughout the State of Illinois and in Lake County.

Since January 2018, the Illinois Department of Public Health has confirmed 110 cases of the virus and has identified 35 cases to be part of a statewide outbreak.

“We encourage any resident who is exhibiting symptoms of hepatitis A virus to seek medical attention immediately,” said Lake County Health Department’s Medi-

cal Epidemiologist Dr. Sana Ahmed. “We also encourage residents at high-risk for infection to get vaccinated for hepatitis A.” The virus is a highly contagious and vaccine-preventable infection. Symptoms include fever, tiredness, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, abdominal and joint pain, dark urine, clay-colored stools and jaundice. Once infected, it may take two to seven weeks before a person shows symptoms of infection. Anyone experiencing symptoms of the virus should call their healthcare provider

to get tested. Anyone who is a close contact of a person who has been recently infected with the virus should also get vaccinated.

The virus may spread when a person unknowingly consumes contaminated food or drink prepared or served by an infected person or has direct contact with an infected person. Groups with high risk for the virus infection include men who have sex with men, people who are homeless, people who are incarcerated, both injection and non-injection drug users, people with direct contact

with someone who has the virus and travelers to countries where the virus is common.

The Illinois Department of Public Health recommends the following steps to prevent the virus: • Get vaccinated • Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water • Do not share needles or have sex with someone who has hepatitis A • Do not share food, drinks or cigarettes • Do not share eating utensils or personal items For more information, visit www.dph.illinois.gov.

PM&L Theatre starts 2019 with ‘The Game’s Afoot’

William Gillette (John Franco) shares a Shakespeare passage to the delight of his guests in PM&L Theatre’s upcoming performance of “The Games Afoot,” directed by Lorrie Ferguson. The play will run every weekend from Feb. 8 until Feb. 24. Performances will be at 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Poyser, 24, of San Antonio, Texas, following a thorough investigation of a report of a sexual offense from July of 2018, according to a Lake County Sheriff’s Office press release.

According to the release, in July of 2018, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a sexual offense. The 23-year-old victim reported Poyser, an acquaintance of hers, was visiting the area from his permanent home in Texas. She and Poyser made plans to socialize. While together at a residence in 38100 block of North State Park Road, Unincorporated Spring Grove, Poyser made unwanted sexual advances toward the

Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched at approximately 8:30 a.m. on Feb. 1, to the area of Wadsworth Road and Sheridan Road, Beach Park, for a traffic crash, according to a Lake County Sheriff’s Office press release.

According to the release, the 911 caller indicated three male subjects fled from one of the vehicles. The vehicle they fled from had just been stolen in Waukegan.

Sheriff’s Deputies arrived and learned an adult male witness saw the three fleeing from the scene and attempted

to intervene to stop them. Two of the offenders, Stephon D. Currie, 18, of the 1800 block of Hebron Avenue, Zion, and a 16-year-old male of Waukegan, attacked and battered the witness.

“Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies, with the assistance of Zion Police Officers, located and apprehended Currie, the 16-year-old and the other passenger, a 15-year-old male of Beach Park,” the release stated.
