Volunteer hairdresser Melissa Trawin of AC Hair Design in Libertyville shaves the last of the golden locks from the head of Antioch Upper Grade School sixth-grade student Aubrey Maxson, 11, during the St. Baldrick’s Rock the Bald fundraiser to help cure childhood cancer held Feb. 21 at the W.C. Petty Elementary School in Antioch. The Rock the Bald event was made more relevant because one of Petty’s students, second grader Alex Texis, 7, is currently undergoing treatment for leukemia. Maxson was one of only two girls from Petty and AUGS who volunteered to have their head shaved for the event. The sacrifice of her hair was not her only contribution, however. She also personally raised $600 for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, and she will be donating the multiple ponytails fashioned from her hair to nonprofit organization Locks of Love. Whoever petitioned the Antioch Village Board to amend liquor licenses for gas stations and convenience stores, it wasn’t the owner of BP at routes 173 and 59. The owner, Sonny Judge, expressed concerns related to the village’s decision at its Feb. 12 regular board meeting. The board’s approval of the Class D license, which costs $1,300 instead of $1,900 for Class C licenses, limits the amount of space a convenience store can reserve for alcohol sales. According to the Class D license, the amount of display floor space allowed for the sale of alcoholic beverages shall be 33 percent or 600 square feet, whichever is greater.

Trustee Ed Macek was not in favor of this license, stating, “You are restricting free enterprise. It makes no sense to me.” Judge, meanwhile, has a Class C liquor license, which allows him to sell spirits along with beer and wine without space limitations. He said the Class D liquor license hinders his business growth. “I’m not in favor of the limits,” Judge said. “I am trying to build my business. I sell these products as a convenience to my customers. I try to meet customer demand. I feel like you are taking something away from me, something I’ve already paid for.” Judge mentioned that a board decision already cost him $30,000 regarding a sign he was required to install. Mayor Larry Hanson asked him not to

bring up items from the past. Village attorney Bob Long suggested that Judge’s Class C license could be grandfathered but doing that he said would drag out the process and the Shell station would have to wait longer for his liquor license. Judge said he had only 10 percent of his retail space in alcohol. He did question the possibility of conflict of interest if anyone on the board voting on this issue had anything to do with alcohol sales in the village. No one owned up to any conflict of interest. Trustee Jerry Johnson, however, is the manager of The Lodge, which does have a village liquor license.
