Grammy nominee makes appearance at area library John Primer, a Grammy award nominee, made an appearance at the Lake Villa District Library, where he performed a free show before area residents on Sunday. A Mississippi native, Primer migrated to the South Side of Chicago in 1963, where he developed his unique talents as a guitarist and as a singer for a number of groups. He joined the Muddy Waters Band, serving not only as a guitarist, but also as an opening act and bandleader. By 1995, Primer went solo and eventually recorded 13 CDs under his own independent record label, Blues House Productions. Primer currently calls Lake County, Illinois, his home. The Sunday jam session was sponsored by the Lake Villa District Library. The library is in the process of erecting a new building located at 140 N. Munn Road in Lindenhurst. The new facility will offer more seating and collaborative spaces, room for more community programs, quiet study areas and an updated youth services department among other features. Construction began last September and will be completed in February 2019. For more information about future library events and news on progress in the construction of the new building, visit the library’s website at http://lvdl.org.

Area police departments donate to county Opioid Initiative Courtesy of 11 police departments, the Lake County Opioid Initiative received a total of $52,500 in donations to help maintain the A Way Out program, which looks to reverse the trend of overdose deaths throughout the county. “As police continue to see a rise in overdose deaths in Lake County, they collaborated to pledge funds from drug asset seizure accounts,” a news release states. A portion of the donation also will fund a coordinator position, which will be responsible for managing the program as it continues to grow, the release states. The police departments’ contributions varied in amounts ranging from $1,000 to $7,500. The donations were received from the following police departments: Deerfield, Fox Lake, Grayslake, Gurnee, Lake County Sheriff’s Office, Lake Forest, Libertyville, Mundelein, Round Lake Beach, Round Lake Park and Zion. “Since we began the A Way Out program, it became very clear that our successes are a product of the cooperation and collaboration that exists among all of the program partners,” said Chief Eric Guenther of the Mundelein Police Department. A Way Out is a Lake County, Illinois, Law Enforcement Assisted Diversion program designed to fast-track users to substance abuse programs and services. This program is available 24
hours a day, seven days a week at participating police departments across Lake County and ensures no criminal charges will be sought for those that may be in possession of narcotics or paraphernalia, as long as assistance is sought out by the prospective program participant. The program was developed by the Lake County Opioid Initiative to create additional treatment access points, reduce crime and substance-related harms, reframe the role law enforcement plays in community safety and unite the community. “For too long, substance use has been stigmatized and dealt with as a criminal issue,” the release states. “Substance use is a public health problem that needs to be addressed as such. Lake County Opioid Initiative is committed to developing innovative ways to create positive change in our community in regards to substance use and mental health. “ To date, 296 lives have been saved via the program. The Lake County Opioid Initiative’s mission is to develop, implement, evaluate and sustain a multistrategy, countywide effort to prevent opioid abuse, addiction, overdose and death.
