The Antioch Chamber of Commerce, along with the Antioch Junior Woman’s Club, announced Saturday, March 2 as Comedy Night.

Comedy Night, an annual fundraiser, will be at Dockers North, 955 Route 59, Antioch, with proceeds benefiting Open Arms Food Pantry and the village’s holiday programs.

The event, meanwhile, begins with a cash bar from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. followed by a dinner buffet consisting of a beef carving station.

A stand-up comedian will then take the stage for a night of entertainment.

The Antioch Chamber said the event promises to be a fun evening and encourages people to bring along friends, family and co-workers to the event. The event is specifically for adults.

Cost of the event is $40 per person and includes a non alcoholic beverage, dinner buffet with a beef carving station, comedic entertainment, silent auction, raffles along with homemade cookies made by members of the Antioch Junior Woman’s Club.

College theater to show Greek drama

The College of Lake County Theater Department presents the Greek drama “Oedipus Rex” Friday, March 1, and Saturday, March 2, at 7:30 p.m.; Sunday, March 3, at 2 p.m.; and Thursday, Friday and Saturday, March 7-9, at 7:30 p.m.

Additionally, a highschool matinee will take place Friday, March 8, at 10 a.m.

Performances are held in the Studio Theatre of the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts on CLC’s Grayslake campus.

While his city suffers from plague and ruin, Oedipus stands firm—a proud king who seems to have nothing to fear.

Oedipus must solve the mystery of who murdered the previous king to save his city, and he is determined that no one will stand in his way. But in seeking the truth, his own worst nightmares come to light.

Written by Sophocles, ‘Oedipus Rex’ is considered to be the greatest of all Greek plays, said Craig Rich, chairman of CLC’s theater department and director of the play.

I have been driving him to his many appointments and to visit him when he is in the hospital. I have taken multiple days off work to care for my father because he does not have anyone else to drive him or help him when he comes home.

I have looked into getting him home health care, but they will not provide care all day while I’m at work.

I held up the bag of food and asked the man if he would like something to eat.

He made a strained face and then shook his head no.

“I don’t think I could get anything down.”

I gave the food to his daughter and she offered to make her dad a plate. He finally agreed.

The son was excited as his mother opened the bag.

“Wow, a real meal, not just noodles,” he said.

I asked the woman if she had gone to the food pantry, but she said she did not have time between work, driving to Madison for her dad’s medical care and then caring for him at home.

“I just can’t get there during their hours of operation.”

I put grocery gift cards at the top of the list.

As they ate, I asked if I could look around the apartment. The father and his daughter did not mind, so I walked to the one bedroom, noting the walker and medications on the bathroom countertop. Only the man could live in the small apartment. I saw the family pictures on the wall, and the woman proudly pointed out her father in his military uniform. Then she showed me pictures of her father and mother, and I learned the latter died five years earlier due to an aneurysm.

“This chicken is delicious, but I just can’t eat anymore,” the gentleman said after a few bites.

“This chicken is great.

I haven’t had a dinner this good in a long time,” his grandson said.

I could see the mother looked embarrassed and the son saw it, too.

“I’m sorry, Mom. It’s not that you aren’t a great cook, it’s just that we don’t have food like this anymore.”

“Don’t apologize. You are right. We haven’t had food like this in awhile.”

The woman helped her father to the bathroom and put the food away and then we sat down to talk.

She showed me her income for the past two months and how it drastically had reduced since she used up all of her sick and vacation days. Her employer was being patient because he knew she was caring for her father. She showed me how much gas she had used the past two months. Her son took me outside to look over the car, which needed service. I told her it looked to be in decent condition but would need new tires.

We then went over her father’s budget. He had been working full time before his cancer diagnosis, but he most likely would only be able to work part time once he was feeling up to it due to his age and declining health.

The daughter had put together a budget with their combined incomes, hers based on several jobs she was applying for in

the Madison area. These jobs would provide them with a better income and some benefits. She also had researched apartments and one seemed like the best fit. Without the added gas expenses they could afford rent, utilities, food and toiletries.

I asked her son what he thought about moving to Madison.

“Whatever is best for my grandpa. He is my best friend and I want him to get better as soon as he can. If we live with him, my mom and I can help him all the time. And when he is better we can do things together again like we used to before he got sick.”

I loved the boy’s devotion to his grandpa and his eagerness to help. We all assumed the grandfather was asleep in his chair and hadn’t heard our conversation.

“I want to hang out with my best buddy again, too,” he said, beginning to cry.

His daughter and grandson rushed to his side and hugged him.

“I know you do, Dad. You will be able to again soon.”

The touching scene brought tears to my eyes.

I could see how much his daughter and grandson loved him. He was blessed to have love and help from his family. Unfortunately, so many of our fellow creations do not.

I could see they all were tired, so I quickly went over the assistance we would provide.

We would bring the daughter’s rent up-to-date so her lease application would be approved at the new apartment in Madison.

We also would pay her overdue utilities so she could put the new ones in her name. We arranged car repairs and new tires so they would not have any more questionable rides to Madison.

We also provided gift cards for gas, groceries and clothing for the son. And once she showed me she had her new job and apartment, we would provide the first month’s rent and security deposit.

Several months later the daughter reported that they all were happy with their new living arrangements.

Sharing an apartment close to the veteran’s medical care was the best move they could have made. Now that her father was gaining strength, she can work every day and run home during her lunch break if needed.

The son is thriving in his new school. The mother shared how her son was bullied in their previous school due to his ill-fitting clothes, but now he had many new friends and came home much happier.

Her father got on the phone and sounded much stronger as he told me about living with his grandson.

“Thank all those people again, please. Helping us

move has made my recovery so much easier.”

“He is so emotional about what you have done to help us he can’t even talk right now,” the daughter said.

“Thank you, thank you.”

When the sun is shining on the coldest of winter days.

When we find the one can of chicken noodle soup left in the pantry. When we start (or finish) a really great book. Double ditto that for a Netflix series. When the family is all home for supper.

When we go to the store for laundry detergent and actually come home with the goods.

Which brings us full circle back to the fabric softener.

What is it with labels these days? There are so many details. So many choices. Why not make the fabric softener

And it happened to me.

Of course it did.

But hey, everyone has bad days. Not a one of us has a corner on that market.

And bad days are in the eye of the beholder. I think about this when I’m having a bad day, but sometimes I don’t want to listen to my own good advice. Sometimes I just get off on feeling sorry for myself and my no-good, supremely bad day.

I think sometimes we have to feel lousy once in awhile. It makes us appreciate the better times.

The days when our socks match. When we locate the car keys without even trying.

Ditto that for sunglasses.

Sunday Fundays. When we get all green lights on our way to work. When we go to throw the washed load into the dryer and our spouse has beat us to the task.

Lake County Craft Beer Festival continues in 2019

The fifth annual Lake County Craft Beer Festival will be from 5 to 10 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 23, at the Lake County Fairgrounds, 1060 E. Peterson Road, Grayslake.

Participate in a night of fun and beverage samplings including home breweries, large breweries, distilleries, wineries and other related products in the Fairground’s Expo Hall.

Volunteers find dozens of homeless people Search part of annual Point-In-Time count

Earlier this month, when 87 volunteers searched Lake County for the annual PointIn-Time Homeless Count, they found 29 people sleeping outside and distributed needed items to them.

The search, according to Lake County officials, involves interviews and assistance to unsheltered people who experience homelessness.

“The information gathered is critical to understanding where resources should be spent and helps evaluate current and future programs to aid the homeless,” a Lake County news release states.

As part of the search, volunteers document the need in Lake County communities by gathering data and providing outreach to the homeless.

Meanwhile, Lake County officials indicate there was an increase from last year, when volunteers counted 24 homeless people.

Lake County Board Chairwoman Sandy Hart, along with Vice Chairwoman Mary Ross Cunningham, joined fellow board members Linda Pedersen and Dick Barr in the search.

Hart, who has participated in previous year, said it is imperative to offer support to the homeless community.

“The boots on the ground effort is incredibly important because it allows us to provide supplies and connect people with the services they need,” said Hart.

“The PIT Count is vital to our mission of ending chronic homelessness in Lake County because it produces a snapshot census of the homeless population. I’m proud to be out on the streets volunteering alongside my fellow Lake County residents.”

During the event held Feb. 6, two people were transported to a local homeless shelter.

Volunteers also distributed items that were

donated to the cause, such as blankets, hygiene supplies and food.

Brenda O’Connell is the Continuum of Care Coordinator for Lake County and one of the event organizers.

“The PIT Count is conducted overnight because we really want to find where people spend the night. The data collected helps us develop housing solutions, connect people with the services they need and tell if we’re close to ending chronic homelessness in the County,” she said.

“We had an incredible group of volunteers who worked tirelessly overnight and into the early morning, and we appreciate their time and dedication.”

The Lake County PIT Count is typically on the last Wednesday in January, when the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development conducts its national effort, but was postponed a week because of the extreme cold.

Lake County service providers, however, still continued to offer help to the homeless during the crippling cold weather.

“Service providers in Lake County took extra care to make sure that those unsheltered homeless individuals had access to warming centers, shelter and safety,” the release states.

Lake County hosts the PIT Count in partnership with the Lake County Coalition for the Homeless. In addition to the PointIn-Time Homeless Count, the Lake County Coalition for the Homeless and other partners work throughout the year on many programs and initiatives.

Lake County residents can help make a difference by supporting the Lake County Coalition for the Homeless and the various member organizations. Each organization has different needs or ways to get involved.

County to accept youth employment applications

Applications for the 2019 Lake County Summer Youth Employment Program are now being accepted through March 31.

The program, funded by the Lake County Board, provides meaningful work experiences for participants, who will work at various sites in Lake County, including private employers and nonprofit organizations, local municipalities and community-based organizations.

“The boots on the ground effort is incredibly important because it allows us to provide supplies and connect people with the services they need,” said Hart.

“The PIT Count is vital to our mission of ending chronic homelessness in Lake County because it produces a snapshot census of the homeless population. I’m proud to be out on the streets volunteering alongside my fellow Lake County residents.”

During the event held Feb. 6, two people were transported to a local homeless shelter.

Volunteers also distributed items that were donated to the cause, such as blankets, hygiene supplies and food.

Brenda O’Connell, Continuum of Care Coordinator for Lake County and one of the event organizers.

“The PIT Count is conducted overnight because we really want to find where people spend the night. The data collected helps us develop housing solutions, connect people with the services they need and tell if we’re close to ending chronic homelessness in the County,” she said.

“We had an incredible group of volunteers who worked tirelessly overnight and into the early morning,

and we appreciate their time and dedication.”

The Lake County PIT Count is typically on the last Wednesday in January, when the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development conducts its national effort, but was postponed a week because of the extreme cold.

Lake County service providers, however, still continued to offer help to the homeless during the crippling cold weather.

“Service providers in Lake County took extra care to make sure that those unsheltered homeless individuals had access to warming centers, shelter and safety,” the release states.

Lake County hosts the PIT Count in partnership with the Lake County Coalition for the Homeless. In addition to the Point-In-Time Homeless Count, the Lake County Coalition for the Homeless and other partners work throughout the year on many programs and initiatives.

Lake County residents can help make a difference by supporting the Lake County Coalition for the Homeless and the various member organizations. Each organization has different needs or ways to get involved.

Earlier this month, when 87 volunteers searched Lake County for the annual PointIn-Time Homeless Count, they found 29 people sleeping outside and distributed needed items to them.

The search, according to Lake County officials, involves interviews and assistance to unsheltered people who experience homelessness.

“The information gathered is critical to understanding where resources should be spent and helps evaluate current and future programs to aid the homeless,” a Lake County news release states.

As part of the search, volunteers document the need in Lake County communities by gathering data and providing outreach to the homeless.

Meanwhile, Lake County officials indicate there was an increase from last year, when volunteers counted 24 homeless people.

Lake County Board Chairwoman Sandy Hart, along with Vice Chairwoman Mary Ross Cunningham, joined fellow board members Linda Pedersen and Dick Barr in the search.

Hart, who has participated in previous year, said it is imperative to offer support to the homeless community.

Sheriff’s Office announces it received a new vest

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office announced K-9 Boomer will receive a bullet and stab protective vest, courtesy of a charitable donation from non-profit organization, Vested Interest in K9s Inc. K-9 Boomer’s vest is sponsored by Yorkville Paws and Claws and will be embroidered with the sentiment “Honoring those who served and sacrificed.”

Delivery is expected within 10 weeks.

Vested Interest in K9s Inc. is a charity located in East Taunton, MA whose mission is to provide bullet and stab protective vests and other assistance to dogs of law enforcement and related agencies throughout the United States. The non-profit was established in 2009 to assist law enforcement agencies with this potentially lifesaving body armor for their four-legged K-9 officers. Since its inception, Vested Interest in K9s Inc. provided over 3,300 protective vests, in 50 states, through private and corporate donations, at a value of $5.7 million dollars.

Sheriff John Idleburg said, “We are grateful for the donation from Vested Interest in K-9s, Inc. K-9 Boomer and his partner Deputy Brian Kilpatrick serve a very important role in Lake County. K-9 Boomer and Deputy Kilpatrick serve as our explosive detection K-9 team. These two go into some very dangerous situations to keep our community safe, and this donation will help keep them safe.”

The program is open to dogs actively employed in the U.S. with law enforcement or related agencies who are certified and at least 20 months of age. New K-9 graduates, as well as K-9s with expired vests, are eligible to participate.

The donation to provide one protective vest for a law enforcement K-9 is $950. Each vest has a value between $1,744 – $2,283 and a five-year warranty, and an average weight of 4-5 lbs.

New laws took effect at start of the year More than 250 new laws went into effect at the start of the year in Illinois.

This includes a new requirement for children to sit in a rear-facing car seat, background checks for ride operators, and expanded stalking laws to include messages via social media.

Here is a partial list of new laws: • Children under age 2 will be required to sit in a rear-facing car seat. There will be height and weight exemptions.

• People with substance use disorders can get immediate access to outpatient treatment. An administrative barrier has been removed allowing an individual to begin treatment prior to receiving authorization from an insurance company.

• All schools must conduct at least one lawenforcement led active shooter drill a year no later than 90 days after the first day of the school year.

• Nursing mothers will be excused from jury duty upon request.

• To increase public safety, background checks will be required for every ride operator at carnivals and amusement attractions.

• If you are required to use your personal phone or computer for work, your employer must have a reimbursement policy.

• Police can take temporary custody of dogs or cats exposed to weather conditions likely to result in injury or death.

• Stalking behavior is expanded to include sending unwanted messages via social media. It also allows places of employment, places of worship or schools to petition for an order against a person stalking their locations.

• A new brochure will be published and distributed by the Department of Public Health to educate the public on the effects of concussions in children and how to look for warning signs.

• Hunters have a new wardrobe option, blaze pink.

Hunters may wear blaze pink or blaze orange during the firearm deer season and upland game season.
