Often in life, meeting with others who have similar interests encourages us to continue to pursue those activities. The same could be said for seven students who enrolled in a watercolor painting class in 1985 at the College of Lake County, a community in Grayslake, where they became friends and encouraged each other to perfect their craft. When the class ended, the seven classmates were not ready to end their friendship and support for their painting, so they decided to meet at each other’s homes, where they continued to share the joy of watercolor painting. Since it was a welcoming group, others with the same interest in painting with watercolors joined them, and eventually outgrew their homes as a meeting place. The group then moved to the larger Grayslake Police Station for a short time before making the transition to the State Bank of the Lakes meeting room in Grayslake, where they continue to meet to this day. Since the move, membership has grown to 144 members who meet monthly from September to

May and at least one original member can be found on the membership rolls. Meetings are a combination of learning and socializing. “We have a demo artist at each meeting,” said Board member Katherine Weber of the Lakes Region Watercolor Guild. “We are about learning but we also have a business meeting and some social time. The group is a sharing group who are always willing to help each other and we enjoy learning about each other.” Members include artists not only from the Lakes region, but also some members who travel from the North Shore, and from Wisconsin. Each month, a newsletter which highlights members accomplishments and current news of the Guild’s activities is sent to members. Additionally, the artist of the month page highlights the accomplishments of one member each month, allowing members to keep up to date with other member’s accomplishments. The purpose of the Guild is to enhance, enrich, and further work in watercolor and to promote a better understanding of creative art.

Antioch considers new police record system By Gail Peckler-Dziki CORRESPONDENT

Antioch police chief Steve Huffman brought information to the Antioch Village Board at the Nov. 29 committee of the whole meeting about upgrading to a new record system for the Village of Antioch Police Department. Huffman explained that he and his department spent 18 months researching a new record system that would have more comprehensive search ability, allow easier data gathering for proactive policing and data sharing with other communities. “The current record system we use is out of date and lacks many tools that our officers need to enforce the law more proactively,” Huffman said. A search committee was put together and considered three different services, Capers, Public Safety Systems Incorporated (PSSI) and New World/Tyler Technologies. Huffman gave certain cost parameters and neither Capers nor PSSI responded.
