They also offer Jelly Belly’s, gummies and children’s novelties.

Michele, Ashley and the entire team love taking care of their customers and getting to know them each time they visit.

“The best part of the business is getting to work with my daughter, Ashley. We both feel so honored and grateful that customers walk through our door,” Michele added.

Even though Michele and her husband have moved to California, Michele regularly returns to Antioch to help Ashley run the store. Customers wonder why Michele comes back to Antioch in the middle of winter, to which Michele replies – “I don’t really care about the cold because our customers are so warm. Antioch will always be my home.”

The College of Lake County has been selected as one of 10 American two-year schools each to receive $100,000 in scholarships from Metallica’s All Within My Hands Foundation and the American Association of Community Colleges.

These students will become the first cohorts under the “Metallica Scholars Initiative” sponsored by the nine-time, Grammy Award-winning band.

The “Metallica Scholars Initiative” is designed to provide support of job skill training for community college students and elevate the importance of career and technical education. Grant funds will provide scholarships and services for a cohort of 50 students in five manufacturing areas. They include mechatronics/automation, photonics/ lasers, welding, automotive and computer numerical control. Local students win literary award at Skyway Conference regional competition

Local college’s Multicultural Affairs honored for inspiring students

College of Lake County writers won five of 12 awards, including two firstplace finishes, at the annual Illinois Skyway Conference Writers’ Festival and Writing Competition, Nov. 15, at Morton College in Chicago Heights.

The CLC student winner in the drama category was “Lucy” by Willow Baartz, of Grayslake, first place. For fiction, Tomoko Funahashi, of Mundelein, took first place with “Sacred,” Apple Rhodes Gunther, of Lake Forest, placed third with “Indian Oaks” and Funahashi received an honorable mention with “Puppy Business.” In creative nonfiction, “Writing the Broken Heart”

by Liam Mellon, of Mundelein, finished first, and “Obsessive Compulsive” by Evalyn F. Elbe, of Waukegan, finished second.

“It takes a lot of courage and determination for students to submit their work for review. The writing programs at CLC offer a welcoming, encouraging space

for writers to explore their potential,” said English professor and editor of CLC’s award-winning journal, Willow Review, Michael Latza.

One of the winning writers who has flourished at the college is Willow Baartz, who entered the competition while enrolled in two English courses: Creative Writing and Introduction to Scripts for Screen taught, respectively, by English Professors Brigid Bell and Elizabeth Aiossa.

“I was ecstatic to hear that I received a first-place award,” said Baartz. “My piece was a part of a larger one that I have been working on for several years and I couldn’t have been more excited to hear that the judges liked it. In my story, the main character, Jodie Booker, is an assassin who works for a private company. In my screenplay, Jodie and her boyfriend go to her daughter’s grave, and Jodie tells him the story of how she lost her daughter.”

Baartz, who will transfer

to Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis for the Spring 2019 Semester, plans to major in English education. Her career goal is to become an English professor and write film scripts on the side.

“All of my CLC English professors have been extraordinarily wonderful,” Baartz said. “They are the ones who helped me realize my love for writing, and they showed me how I can incorporate my writing into my future.”

The Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference provides competition in athletics and academics for its eight member schools, which include Morton College in Cicero, Elgin Community College, Oakton Community College in Des Plaines, Waubonsee Community College in Sugar Grove, McHenry County College in Crystal Lake, Moraine Valley Community College in Palos Hills, Prairie State College in Chicago Heights and the College of Lake County in Grayslake.

Lake County Sheriff’s Office and Sheriff’s Association partner for annual shopping event Sheriff John Idleburg, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office and the Lake County Sheriff’s Association are announced a successful seventh annual “Shop with a Sheriff” event. The program was held on Dec. 18, and benefited 78 children in need by providing them an opportunity to shop for items such as winter coats and Christmas presents with a uniformed member of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office or Lake County Coroner’s Office.

The children who participated were from Community Consolidated School District 46. An application process which helped identify financial need was determined by school district officials.

Each child shopper had an approximate $100 limit, which was funded completely by donations. A total of $8,300 was spent by this year’s shoppers. Participating law-enforcement acted as chaperons to help the junior shoppers make sound decisions and assisted them in keeping track of how much

they spent.

The event began in the evening at Avon Center School in Round Lake Beach. The children visited with Santa and had a photo with Santa taken. The kids were able to eat, play games and enjoy themselves while waiting their turn to shop.

The kids were then transported to the Round Lake Beach Walmart to have their fun time shopping.

“I am so proud we are now in our seventh year of hosting this amazing event.

We have a terrific group of volunteers who help organize this event and we are grateful for all those who participated in taking this awesome group of kids shopping,” said Lake County Sheriff’s Association President Mark Vice.

“The Lake County Coroner’s Office is proud to participate with the Sheriff’s Office and Sheriff’s Association in such a great event. A big thank you to all of the junior shoppers and volunteers who joined,” said Lake County

Coroner Dr. Howard Cooper.

“It was nothing short of impressive watching the members of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office and Coroner’s Office have this positive interaction with our youth.

The children who participated will undoubtedly remember this positive experience forever. Thank you to the Lake County Sheriff’s Association and everyone who participated,” said Sheriff John Idleburg.

Upcoming happenings • Scholarships Wanted couple United Methodist of Antioch apprehended in Wadsworth Church to present “Organ The Lake County Sheriff’s Office Warrants Team in conjunction with the U.S. Marshals Service-Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force apprehended Anne M. Stetson, 47, of the 41500 block of North Route 41, Wadsworth, and James C. Pease, 50, of the same address, on Dec. 17, 2018, according to a Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the release, Pease had an active Lake County failure to appear arrest warrant for burglary and Stetson had an active Lake County arrest warrant for theft.

County Sheriff’s Warrants Team developed information the pair were living in a motel in the 41500 block of North Route 41.

“Warrants Deputies set up surveillance and located both inside a motel room.

Both were apprehended

without incident. Pease was found to be in possession of methamphetamine during the arrest,” the release stated.

McHenry County announces new clerk

McHenry County Board Chairman Jack Franks, D-Marengo, is in search of qualified residents to apply to succeed County Board member Michael Walkup, who resigned from office effective Dec. 1.

State law provides that the McHenry County Board Chairman shall fill the vacancy with the County Board’s advice and consent. Candidates must be age 18 or older, registered to vote in McHenry County, a Republican and must live in County Board District 3, which covers all of

Nunda Township, McHenry Township precincts 2, 9, 20, 22, 25, 28 and 30, and Algonquin Township precincts 21, 29, 49, 50 and 67.

The appointee will serve until the Dec. 1, 2020 expiration of the term.

The County Board is responsible for establishing the budgets of county government and dependent agencies, and adopting ordinances and rules pertaining to the management and business of county departments.

To apply, qualified candidates should email a resume

and cover letter detailing their interest to Franks’ office by Friday, Jan. 18, 2019. Applicants will then be asked to fill out a detailed questionnaire, as well as McHenry County’s statement of economic interests and conflict of interest form.

The McHenry County Board of Health announced the resignation of medical adviser George W. Goodlow, M.D. Dr. Goodlow has provided medical supervision to the McHenry County Department of Health and medical advice to the Board of Health since January of 2014.

“Over the past four years Dr. Goodlow has been influential in guiding both the Board and the Department in matters requiring medical expertise,” said Board of Health President William Stinson, M.D. “Dr. Goodlow began serving McHenry County residents in 2008 as a ‘Well Child Clinic’ physician. Although this clinic has since been discontinued, he assisted the Department in this capacity until 2014,” said Di-

rector of Nursing Susan Karras, R.N. “Dr. Goodlow has been a champion for public health, in addition to his expertise, his jovial manner with clients and staff will be missed.”

A Fellow in the American Academy of Pediatrics, he earned his Doctor of Medicine at the University of Illinois, Chicago in 1973. He is on staff at Northwest Community Hospital, Advocate Lutheran General Hospital and Chicago’s Lurie Children’s Hospital. He is a primary care pediatrician and has had a practice in Arlington Heights since 1976.

The contractual duties of the Medical Advisor include: • Recommending and approving standing medical orders.

• Recommending clinical

• Availability for consultation on matters with medical implications.

• Availability to Department management staff.

have to hang up and call you later. If you weren’t home, the phone would continue ringing until the person on the other end hung up. There were no messaging features, no record of missed calls.

When you called someone you had to dial the number manually. You likely had dozens of phone numbers memorized. There was no auto dial. Your address book consisted of an actual book — can you believe it — where you wrote in the names and numbers by hand.

If you didn’t have a particular number, you’d look in the thick and hefty phone book supplied by the telephone company.

Everyone had one. They were valuable and extremely useful commodities. If you needed a plumber or dentist you looked in the phone book. You’d never think of throwing your phone book away or using it as a doorstop.

Calls were limited and defined by distance. If someone lived in a different state, you had to use a service called long distance. Long distance calls were expensive and were often reserved for

When you left your house – to go to the mall or to school or wherever – your phone stayed tethered to the kitchen wall. If you needed to call someone you used a public pay phone. Calls cost a quarter.

Finally, phones were unitasking units. Not even the most expensive phone came with the option of any sort of camera feature, and video capabilities were out of the question.

That was then. This is now. While phones are more important and smarter than ever, our approach to them has changed.

Today my phone rings in my pocket. My husband is calling. I know this because of the ring tone. I have different tones programmed for frequent callers, my husband being one of them.

He also has his own text tone, as do all the members of my family. Each of us has our own phone and number. We couldn’t imagine sharing.

When other friends and family call, their contact information pops up on my screen. If a call comes from an unknown number, I don’t answer it. I don’t want to risk fielding random sales calls.

When I want to call someone, I type the first few letters of their name into my phone and the number pops up on my screen. I don’t have anyone’s phone number memorized. Not even those

Lake County Sheriff supports first responders bill Lake County Sheriff John Idleburg announced his support in the Kerrie Orozco First Responders Family Support Act (H.R. 6580).

Sheriff Idleburg signed a letter of support, urging the U.S. Senate to pass the bill before the end of the 115th U.S. Congress. The letter

is being sent to U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and U.S. Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer.

In 2015, Omaha, Nebraska Police Officer Kerrie Orozco, a seven-year police officer, was killed in the line-of-duty. Her husband

became a single father and was in a five-year waiting period before he could apply to become a U.S. Citizen. In addition to losing his wife, this caused significant instability for he and his family.

H.R. 6580 provides law-enforcement officers the comfort of knowing should

they pay the ultimate sacrifice for their community, their families will be cared for by waiving the five-year continuous residence and the 30-month physical presence requirements for naturalization. This is similar to current legal provisions in place for Gold Star Families who lose an active-duty service member, killed during military service.

“I believe the Kerrie Orozco First Responders Family Support Act is a step in the right direction when it comes to supporting our first responders. Every day, our first responders serve their communities, knowing they might pay the ultimate sacrifice for those they serve. As a society, we need to ensure we are taking care of those who take care of us,” said Sheriff Idleburg.

Illinois bicentennial special exhibition coming to a close The special exhibition commemorating the Illinois bicentennial celebration will come to a close on Sunday, Jan. 6, at the Dunn Museum, 1899 W. Winchester Road, Libertyville. The exhibit is presented by the Dunn Museum and members of the Lake County Historical Alliance.

It showcases the work of local historical societies and features artifacts from the book “200 Objects That Made History in Lake and McHenry Counties.”

Project Manager for the book Debbie Fandrei is a curator at the Raupp Museum in Buffalo Grove.

“The book takes people on a trip through 200 years of Lake County history,” Fandrei said.

Fandrei was born and raised in Grayslake and attended college in Minnesota and Virginia. After an internship at the Milwaukee Public Museum, she decided she wanted to work in history museums because of the great stories museums share with

visitors.

Dunn Museum is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Tuesday to Saturday and from noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays. The museum is closed Mondays. It is open until 8 p.m. on the first and third Thursdays of every month with free admission after 5 p.m. on those days. The free admission is sponsored
