Lake County announces high school essay contest

Local student performs in Lake Geneva Symphony Orchestra concert

The Lake County State’s Attorney Michael G. Nerheim invites high school students in Lake County to participate in an essay contest for Lake County Rising, a public statement demanding the end of violence perpetrated against women. Students are asked to write an essay of 500 words or less that addresses the following questions: • What does a future without violence look like? • How would it benefit you personally to have a future free of violence? • What do you intend to do to help create a future that is free of violence? Essays that incorporate the themes “Rise, Resist and Unite” will be given top consideration. “Involving our youth is a key component of our community engagement strategy. We want to empower and encourage them to be social justice champions and I am excited to hear their ideas,” said Lake County State Attorney Michael G. Nerheim. “Lake County Rising” is the community’s version of the global movement “One Billion Rising.” In 2012, Round Lake Beach resident and former trustee Judy Armstrong was inspired to see Lake County participate in

On Nov. 3, Antioch resident RJ Migas joined with fellow Lake Geneva Symphony Orchestra volunteer musicians from throughout northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin in a concert at Calvary Community Church in Williams Bay, Wisconsin. Mingas attends Lake Villa Community High School. The concert included Hungarian Dance No. 6 by Johannes Brahms, Symphony No. 3 – the “Organ Symphony” – by Camille Saint-Saëns and the Violin Concerto by Max Bruch, featuring Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra concertmaster Frank Almond as guest violinist. The next performance of the Orchestra will be on Feb. 16, 2019, during the orchestra’s annual “Gala” at the Grand Geneva Resort in Lake Geneva. The theme for the Gala is “Moonlight Serenade.” Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for a reception, followed by a full plated dinner served at 6:15 p.m. and a short performance featuring the entire orchestra along with guest vocalists. The Gala also includes an opportunity to take to the dance floor to the music of the 18-piece LGSO Swing Band and to bid on a select list of special prizes during a silent auction. During the concert, LGSO Music Director David Anderson announced the LGSO’s performance of Beethoven’s majestic Symphony No. 9 on Mar. 16, 2019, beginning at 7:30 p.m. in Young Auditorium at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. This concert will conclude the LGSO “Beethoven Project” started during the 2010-11 season that included a performance of each Beethoven symphony over nine seasons. A chorus of 160 will combine the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Chamber Singers and Concert Choir, the Moody Chorale from Moody Bible Institute (Chicago) and the University of Northern Iowa Concert Chorale. For more information about the LGSO, including its Chamber Music Series, and to purchase tickets for the Gala and the Beethoven 9 concert, visit www. lakegenevaorchestra.org.
