Honoring our sailors
Antioch continues ‘Kringle Christmas Village’ in 2018
By Sandra Landen Machaj CORRESPONDENT
The National Museum of the American Sailor is located on the grounds of Great Lakes Naval Station, 2531 Sheridan Road, Great Lakes. This museum is the only one in the nation devoted entirely to the American sailor. Great Lakes Naval Station opened in 1911, north of Chicago in Lake County. It is the largest training base and is the home of the only naval boot camp in the nation. Therefore, every incoming sailor spends time here attending boot camp at Great Lakes so it is fitting that the National Museum of the American Sailor makes its home here. The base itself is housed on more than 1,600 acres overlooking Lake Michigan. 1,513 buildings are housed on the grounds, 39 of them are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The base itself is the size of a small city with over 20,000 sailors, marines, soldiers and Department of Defense civilians making their home here. The new Navy recruits arrive at Great Lakes and immediately begin their eight-week boot camp training. They are relived of all their personal possessions, including all their clothing and their cell phones for the duration of their stay. During this time, they learn enough to take their place on a Navy vessel. Although the base is on the shore of Lake Michigan, none of the training is done on a ship. All the training is done in simulators. It is here that they are changed from a civilian to a sailor. The museum was started by the Great Lakes Naval Museum Foundation in 1991 and was based in a small building on the base grounds. In 2009, the museum moved to its current location

Visitors Greg Lofgren and Patrick Wirtz from McHenry inspect the Mark 42 gun in place in front of the National Museum of the American Sailor. When mounted on a ship it could be fired by remote means or from the mount. The gun was used for training before being donated to the museum.
