Antioch continues ‘Kringle Christmas Village’ in 2018

The National Museum of the American Sailor is located on the grounds of Great Lakes Naval Station, 2531 Sheridan Road, Great Lakes. This museum is the only one in the nation devoted entirely to the American sailor.

Great Lakes Naval Station opened in 1911, north of Chicago in Lake County. It is the largest training base and is the home of the only naval boot camp in the nation. Therefore, every incoming sailor spends time here attending boot camp at Great Lakes so it is fitting that the National Museum of the American Sailor makes its home here.

The base itself is housed on more than 1,600 acres overlooking Lake Michigan. 1,513 buildings are housed on the grounds, 39 of them are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The base itself is the size of a small city with over 20,000 sailors, marines, soldiers and Department of Defense civilians making their home here.

The new Navy recruits arrive at Great Lakes and immediately begin their eight-week boot camp training. They are relived of all their personal possessions, including all their clothing and their cell phones for the duration of their stay.

During this time, they learn enough to take their place on a Navy vessel. Although the base is on the shore of Lake Michigan, none of the training is done on a ship. All the training is done in simulators. It is here that they are changed from a civilian to a sailor.

The museum was started by the Great Lakes Naval Museum Foundation in 1991 and was based in a small building on the base grounds. In 2009, the museum moved to its current location

Antioch’s “Kringle’s Christmas Village” tour will be from Thursday, Nov. 22, until Tuesday, Jan. 1, in downtown Antioch, Main St., Antioch.

Guests will browse the dozens of oversized shadowboxes that are filled to the brim with quaint scenes.

The holiday comes alive as guests enjoy the ambiance of quaint Downtown Antioch while they enjoy meandering around town visiting the various shadowbox scenes and other fun décor.

There will be a complimentary walking tour brochure available. Bus Tours can enjoy the benefit of a complimentary tour guide for groups of 20 or more. Donations appreciated for the tour guide.

Volunteers and/or shadowbox “scene” sponsors are needed for this program in 2018. Volunteers will be needed for refreshing and organizing throughout the year, plus volunteers to move scenes from warehouse to Downtown Antioch and setup. Tear down after Christmas also requires volunteers.

Two adults, two juveniles arrested for burglarizing cars in Warren Township

During the overnight hours of Oct. 29, to Oct. 30, 18 burglaries to vehicles were reported in the Grandwood Park area, Warren Township.

Sheriff’s Deputies responded and commenced an immediate investigation, according to a Lake County Sheriff’s Office press release.

During the investigation, Sheriff’s Deputies learned the suspects in the car burglaries were staying at a motel in the 600 block of North Green Bay Road, Waukegan. Sheriff’s Deputies and Detectives located a vehicle used by the suspects in the motel parking lot. After conducting surveillance at the motel, two adults and two juveniles were taken into custody in the afternoon on Oct. 30.

“They were found to be in possession of proceeds stolen during the vehicle burglaries,” the release stated.

The McHenry County Board of Health announced the resignation of medical adviser George W. Goodlow, M.D. Dr. Goodlow has provided medical supervision to the McHenry County Department of Health and medical advice to the Board of Health since January of 2014.

“Over the past four years Dr. Goodlow has been influential in guiding both the board and the department in matters requiring medical expertise,” said Board of Health President William Stinson, M.D. “Dr. Goodlow began serving McHenry County residents in 2008 as a ‘Well Child Clinic’ physician. Although this clinic has since been discontinued, he assisted the department in this capacity until 2014,” said Director of Nursing Susan Karras, R.N. “Dr. Goodlow has been a champion for public health, in addition to his expertise, his jovial manner with clients and staff will be missed.”

group of volunteers with Aurora at Home Hospice recently gathered for the second year in a row to work on a special project, making fleece lap quilts for veterans who are under hospice care.

“It was so well received last year that we did it again this year. In early October, a group of volunteers spent a couple of hours at Lynn Presbyterian Church making 25 fleece lap quilts,” said Vera Jane Johnson, volunteer coordinator for Aurora at Home.

There are four different fleece designs used, one for each branch of military service – the Army, the Navy, the Air Force and the Marines.

The quilts will be given to current hospice patients who are veterans on Veterans Day, Nov. 11.

Johnson said throughout the year, every hospice patient who is a veteran is honored for their service in a variety of ways, including a special certificate, a pin and a visit from a fellow veteran.

Though the volunteer program Aurora at Home offers is strong, one of the challenges, Johnson said, is finding veterans to serve as volunteers.

“I am always looking for more veterans to present certificates, do a pinning or visit our veterans. That is my greatest need,” she said.

Aurora at Home currently has one veteran who is a volunteer – Carol Starkey.

“She visits every veteran once they are admitted to our hospice services. She presents them with a certificate, pins them and salutes them,” Johnson said of Starkey.

Erica Reed, also a volunteer coordinator, said a good portion of the veterans on hospice service in Kenosha and Racine counties are at the Union Grove VA facility, while veterans in neighboring Walworth County are community members.

One example Reed gave is a person describing pain in their lower legs and feet.

“In the case of someone who served in the Korean War, they could have suffered frostbite years ago.

Sometimes the reason for the pain is not related to their current condition,” Reed said.

“We Honor Veterans really helps staff and volunteers be more aware of possible causes of pain and the patients’ needs based on their time of service,” Johnson added.

She said Aurora at Home’s social workers are now better equipped to listen during conversations with veteran patients about their time of service.

“It also can make the conversations easier just by being aware of what, when and where they served, even if they don’t talk about it extensively,” Reed said.

The We Honor Veterans program is provided at no cost to hospice organizations.

The goal of the program is simple – to care for and honor those who have served when they reach the end of life, according to the website.

“By working through the partner levels and participating in community partnerships and collaborations,

partner organizations are able to educate, engage and expand awareness to veterans and their families,” it states. A vast majority of veterans “may not be aware of endof-life services and benefits available to them, including the Medicare Hospice Benefit and VA-paid hospice care.”

The WHV program is sustained via community-based health care organizations such as skilled nursing facilities and funeral homes.

Because of its comprehensive and supportive nature, hospice is something to consider before you are confined to a bed or unable to communicate,” a description on the Aurora at Home

The range of services offered through hospice includes medical care, pain management, home hospice care, infusion therapy, nutritional counseling, physical therapy and spiritual services.

“Our hospice program is designed to help adults and children with a variety of conditions. We’ll work with you in your home or a nursing home, assisted living center or hospital,” it states.

Hospice provides an interdisciplinary team to meet the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of the patient. The team may include the patient’s personal physician, a nurse, a social worker, a chaplain, a home health aide, a pharmacist, a dietitian, therapists and a counselor.

Admission to hospice is based on need, rather than the ability to pay. Medicare and Medicaid cover all costs related to hospice care, including visits from team members, equipment, supplies, medications and comfort-related therapies.

Private insurance policies vary, and if hospice coverage is not available, Aurora at Home will connect the patient with financial counseling services.

Become a volunteer

Hospice volunteers receive specialized training to help terminally ill patients remain

comfortable and connected in their final days of life.

There are a variety of areas the talents and passions of volunteers can be put to use, including office work, public speaking, patient and family support, meal preparation, running errands, pet therapy and special events.

Patients often seek engagement via playing games, hearing music or simple conversation. The availability is entirely up to the volunteers, including days of the week and periods of time.

Volunteers must apply, be interviewed and complete a criminal background check. If approved, certain vaccinations are required followed by a volunteer orientation.

In addition to the ongoing need for volunteers, Aurora at Home also accepts donations for a variety of projects and needs, Johnson said.

“People can make general donations or be specific about what they want it to go toward, such as the military blankets project,” she said.

adjacent to the main entrance to the naval base. In 2009, the Great Lakes Naval Museum became an official Department of the Navy Museum. On May 29, 2014, Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus officially changed the name to the National Museum of the American Sailor.

This new home was in a building designed in 1942

by Gordon Bunshaft. He was an architect with wellknown Chicago architectural firm Skidmore, Owings and Merrill. The building became known as the Hostess House.

During World War II, it became the welcome center for approximately one million sailors entering boot camp prior to being assigned to a ship in the fleet.

After the War, the building

was used in various ways and then fell into disrepair and demolition was considered.

Because it was considered a classic example of modern American architecture, the demolition was not carried through. Instead, it was repurposed as the home of the new National Museum of the American Sailor.

While the museum is opened, much of the building is still under construction. On a recent tour, we were taken into the construction zone to view the beautiful wood beams that are not only functional but decorative adding to the beauty of the room. The museum has been collecting memorabilia and while all of it is not yet on display, it is carefully preserved until it is brought out to be displayed.

A variety of uniforms have been donated to the museum. They are stored in rows according to the type of uniform when not on display in the museum.

Tree farms to open after Thanksgiving Tree farms throughout Northern Illinois will offer real trees for purchase in time for the upcoming holiday season. The farms are open and vary in ending dates and hours.

Tree farms in the area are the following: • Gengel Tree Farm will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. every weekend from Friday, Nov. 23, through Monday, Dec. 17, at Gengel Tree Farm, 38614 N. Fairfield, Lake Villa. Trees are pre-cut.

‘Dickens Holiday Village’ set to be on display throughout downtown Antioch Antioch’s “Dickens Holiday Village” will be on display from Thursday, Nov. 22, until Tuesday, Jan. 1, in front of the shops on Main Street, Antioch.

The displays are characters from Charles Dickens works and are handcrafted from volunteer artists. There will be a plaque on each display describing the scene.

Guests can pick up a free tour brochure from the Dickens Welcome Center. There is also

a tour option for groups of 20 people or more.

On Saturdays throughout the event, there will be music and other activities at the “Kringle Big Top Tent” located next to the intersection of Main Street and Orchard Street.

People of all ages are welcome to look at the displays and viewing the displays is free.

Waukegan man arrested following an armed robbery A Waukegan man was arrested on Oct. 30, following an armed robbery on Sept. 12, at the Clark Gas Station, 2041 E. Grand.

Ave., Lindenhurst, according to a Village of Lindenhurst press release.

According to the release, a felony warrant for aggravated robbery was issued for Harley Hall, of Waukegan. The warrant Harley Hall stemmed from an incident at the gas station where Hall allegedly entered the gas station, produced a shotgun and demanded money from the employee.

Harley was taken into custody on Oct. 30, without incident and transported to the Lake County Jail.

“This is yet another example of great teamwork.

On the night of the incident, Lindenhurst Police Officers requested immediate assistance from our law enforcement partners. Through this collaborative effort, a perimeter was established, a canine team was requested and pertinent evidence was located near the scene and subsequently collected,” said Chief Thomas Jones. “Through additional interviews and analysis of the evidence collected, we were able to identify a suspect.”

The public is reminded that the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.

Aid helps woman remove herself, young son from abusive situation Dear W.C., I have been sharing a rental with my 4-year-old son and my best friend for the past eight months. When I went through my divorce last year it left me in a bad financial situation. My ex-husband was abusive, and in our settlement I was given full custody of our son but left with nowhere to live. My friend invited me to share a rental with her, and at the time it seemed like a good solution. She was single and we got along well. We split the rent and she even offered to watch my son in the evenings when I got a second job.

Three months ago she met a guy and she claims they are in love. He has already moved in and I can see he wants me and my son out. He makes me uncomfortable, especially if I come home and she is still at work. He says inappropriate things and has said some horrible things to my son. My son is now terrified of him and I do not feel comfortable leaving him in my friend’s care while I am at work.

I have to get my son and myself out of this situation, but I do not have enough saved for a security deposit and first month’s rent somewhere else, especially while still paying rent here.

I have found a small apartment that my son and I could share. I told my friend about my concerns and that if he did not move out I would be. She was mad at first, but I told her it was unfair for me to be paying half the rent and her boyfriend paying nothing.

He eats my food, even if I label it as mine. I have found things in my room either moved or missing.

It is a terrible thing when you feel unsafe in your own home. I went through that with my ex-husband and never want my son or myself to feel that way again.

Dear readers, There are many forms of abuse, and in my many years of providing poverty relief I have seen far too many of them. This woman’s gut feeling was making her feel unsafe around her friend’s new boyfriend. I am a firm believer in following what your instincts are telling you. I would rather someone be safe than sorry.

Because there was a child involved and he was being verbally abused, we needed to step in and help them find a safe and affordable place.

I contacted the letter writer, and because she had given up her second job she was no longer working evenings and would be home. I had hoped to run into the boyfriend during my visit but was informed he was out of town for a week.

I arrived at the friends’ rented town. A woman with a young boy hiding behind her answered the door. I could tell he was shy, and

he had every right to be afraid of a stranger because of his experience with men in his young life.

The home looked neat and did not contain much furniture.

“When my husband and I divorced, I did not take much of our belongings. I wanted out and knew with his anger issues it would just make things worse for me if I had asked for more.

My son and I took our dressers and personal items, not much more. I have a few boxes of kitchen stuff in the basement that I never unpacked because I never considered this our home anyway.”

She said that her roommate would be home from work in about an hour, and because some of the subject matter concerned her friend, I thought it best we get right to that topic.

The woman asked her son if he would like to watch his favorite television program to distract him from what we were discussing while allowing her to keep an eye on him.

We sat at a nearby table and talked about her divorce and current situation in hushed tones because she did not want to upset her son. I listened as she recounted stories of horrible things her exhusband said and his threats of punishment, including attempted strangulation.

He was careful no one ever witnessed his violent acts or threats with knives and guns, and with many friends in high places she chose not to pursue a restraining order or other legal action. She felt lucky to have gotten out with her son and the few belongings they shared.

“He said he did not want our son, so good riddance.

I can’t believe he said that right in front of our son.

He may have been afraid of his dad, but he still loved him as most little boys do.

He was a good man when I married him, until he had an injury at work and started using pain pills.

They changed him and he could not seem to get off them. I think he started using stronger drugs then.

I am just relieved he let us out of his life.”

I asked about her best friend and her boyfriend.

I learned they had been friends since college.

She filled me in on his comments and I agreed they were inappropriate.

“He actually told my son to get out of the living room because he was not wanted here. He told me he would sneak in my room at night and do inappropriate things. He said it with a laugh, but I could feel his intent was real. Ever since I have been locking my son

and I in our room at night.

If I come home now and my friend isn’t home but he is here, I go to the library or a coffee shop until she gets home. It is not right because I pay half the rent and he contributes nothing.

My friend said he needs some help right now, but I think he is lazy and I think he doesn’t even have a job.

He said he was going away for a work trip, but I don’t believe him. He is using my friend and her good heart. I have tried to warn her, but she will not listen.”

Then we went over the woman’s bills and expenses. I helped her put together a realistic budget so we could see if she could afford renting on her own. She showed me the apartment she had found through a friend at work. It was reasonable and would give them the privacy and security they needed. I showed the woman how she could afford this apartment without having to work a second job if she carefully followed their budget.

They would need the first month’s rent and security deposit. The woman showed me their few belongings, so I knew they would need some furniture. And when I saw they were sleeping half deflated air mattresses, I added new beds to the list. After looking over her son’s sparse room and empty closet, I gave the woman several gift cards for clothing, including winter coat and boots, much-needed household necessities and a few toys.

“I don’t know how to thank you. How would we have gotten out of this situation? I do not want my son living anywhere he feels threatened, fear or unwanted.”

She still asked a few questions about Time Is Now She got tears in her eyes again when I told her how many people in our community care about her and her son.

“I never knew there were so many kind, caring people here. I am amazed by their generosity to me and my son.”

She wanted to make sure I shared her gratitude for changing her life as she wiped more tears away.

“My friend will be home soon. I think I should break it to her alone that I will be leaving. I will tell her she needs to have her boyfriend paying half the rent or she should tell him to get out.

I know she will want him to stay, so I will use that as my excuse to tell her I have found a new rental. I also will again tell her the things her boyfriend has said to me and my son and hopefully this time she will believe me. I know it is time for us to move on. We are ready to be living like a family again, just my boy and me.”

I was glad we could help them do that.

I visited them in their new apartment a few weeks

later. This time I found happy faces, not stressed, fearful ones. The mother showed me the many ways we helped, from the new shoes by the door to the couch and table. This time the shy boy smiled and showed me his new toys.

His mother encouraged him to say something to me.

“Thank you for helping my mommy,” he said softly.

I did my best to hide tears from this beautiful child.

“You are very welcome.”

Juvenile arthritis an oft unknown, unseen affliction

ust prior to her 10th birthday, Amelia Detlor began complaining – on and off – about her wrist and thumb hurting.

“I didn’t think too much of it at first, but when I went to hold her hand one day and she said, ‘Not that one,’ and pulled it away, I knew something wasn’t right,” Amelia’s mom, Julie, said.

A trip to the doctor included blood being drawn and a positive result in an Antinuclear Antibodies test. Referred to as an ANA test, it looks for autoimmune diseases such as lupus or rheumatoid arthritis, though the test itself doesn’t indicate the presence of an autoimmune disease.

“We were sent to an orthopedic doctor who did x-rays and they looked fine. But he compared her wrists and saw very minor swelling in one so referred us to

rheumatology,” Julie explained.

The Detlor family, originally from Canada, was living in Madison, Alabama, at the time so was referred to Vanderbilt, where Amelia was eventually prescribed an injectable medication.

“It didn’t work and her hips, knees and ankles started hurting, so she was switched to another medicine, Enbrel, which is also injectable,” Julie said. “It’s very expensive, like $36,000 a year, so thank God for insurance.”

Every Friday, Julie gives two shots to Amelia, who is now 12 and a seventh-grade student at Elkhorn Area Middle School.

“Some kids flip out over a flu shot and she gets 104 shots a year,” Julie said.

The medicine suppresses Amelia’s immune system to keep the inflammation to a minimum, which reduces pain and stiffness in her joints.

She said kids don’t always understand – or believe – the pain

Amelia deals with because it’s not visible. Though it would be understandable if her brother, Ryan, who is 14, felt cheated in some way, Julie said that’s never been the case.

“Ryan’s great. He just does his own thing, his small engine repair work. He’s had the business since he was 11,” she said. “It was funny because people would come by and ask him if his dad was around, thinking it was his dad’s business.”

Amelia also has taken her diagnosis well, Julie said.

“She’s a normal kid. She loves her cats, loves to draw and loves ‘The Office,’” she said.

Juvenile arthritis is not common, but Amelia and Julie have made connections at JA Family Day events.

Life with kids full of muddy messes My kids give me gifts, often without even knowing it. This weekend I received a pair, or actually it was a pair of pairs. Pants, that is. Two pairs, which totaled a pair.

To further play with words, the pants were paired with a request. It was one of the most simple, albeit complex, requests I’ve ever received: Can you clean these?

Of course I can clean them! It’s one of the things moms do best. We clean things because no one else has the ability to detect they are dirty. Except detection of dirt wouldn’t be the problem here.

These once-white football pants were covered in ground-in dirt of the driedon mud variety. Brown and crusty. From top to bottom they were covered in splashes and splotches of grime that even my 16-year-old son could not ignore.

It must have been quite a messy, rainy, mud-laden game. But I like a challenge.

I got right to work. I started with a pretreatment.

Any laundry pro knows pretreatments are key to unsoiled success. I ran the washer on the deep clean, deep water cycle. Hot. And I waited.

Here are some little known facts about ground-in dirt.

Ground-in sounds permanent because it basically is. When something is ground-in, it has permeated the fibers of the fabric and must be extracted with force. Apparently my washing machine did not possess such force because the pants came out of the cycle with 87 percent of the mud splotches intact.

I was just getting started.

I carried the pants to the kitchen sink and attacked the spots individually with toothbrush and dish soap. I use toothbrushes for cleaning more than just teeth, but not the same one for both purposes. Teeth toothbrushes are not laundry toothbrushes and vice versa. The same goes for toilet toothbrushes, which are unitaskers for sure.

I thought it best to clear that subject up earlier rather than later.

Back to the pair of pair of pants: I scrubbed until my fingers were puckered and raw, but little by little the dirt succumbed to my efforts and slowly the pants became less brown and nearer to their original white state.

Who scrubs their kid’s pants with a toothbrush, you might ask. Good question, I might answer. A parent who doesn’t want their kid to be the only one on the field with brown pants, that’s who.

Mud can make us look messy. It is messy and we don’t really want people all up in our messes. Messes should be private, or at least invisible. So we scrub, sometimes with a toothbrush, to get things looking white again. We do whatever we can to remove the mud stains from our pants and our lives.

Because mud can creep into places where we least want it. Lots of things can be muddy. Boots. Puddles.

Springtime. The back entryway. Water. The truth.

Relationships. Life. Even football pants.

Some people immerse themselves in mud by choice.

Some even run in it on the football field.

My son was scheduled to do just that the very next day. That morning – in a triumphant mom moment – I presented him with both pairs of clean pants.

“Oh, I don’t need those today,” he said. “They’re just my practice pants. I have clean ones for the game.”

So much for avoiding muddy messes.
