Embracing the holiday season By Sandra Landen Machaj CORRESPONDENT
While it seemed that fall had just settled in and we were enjoying the soft change of colors in nature from green to orange and red, Mother Nature had a surprise for us. More than a week ago, an unexpected snowfall reminded all of us that winter and the holiday season are just around the corner. Although the snowfall was relatively short lived, it was followed by some below average temperatures, encouraging everyone to bring out the winter coats, boots, scarves, gloves and snow shovels. In many garages, snow blowers and plows were being checked to be certain that they were ready for the months ahead. And now this week, we begin the holiday season with the celebration of Thanksgiving. It is a time when families gather together to be thankful for all their blessings, especially being thankful for each other. In many families the traditional Thanksgiving dinner of turkey, stuffing, cranberries, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes and a vegetable of choice, such as the traditional green bean casserole or more interesting vegetables such as Brussels sprouts or asparagus, makes its way to the dining table for everyone to enjoy and for many, to over-enjoy. And despite the amount consumed at dinner, there is always room for dessert, especially the traditional pumpkin pie. For the Village of Antioch, Thanksgiving Day is a special day for it is on that day that the village will be turned into a magical winter wonderland. Perhaps even the weather will cooperate and add just a tinge of fresh snow to really give the feeling of a Victorian England Christmas. Throughout the year, volunteers from the Chamber of Commerce and the Antioch Fine Arts Community have been busy devising new decorations for the Village. The many Victorian figures from Charles Dickens’ story “A Christmas Carol” have made their home on the streets of downtown Antioch for the past several years. Each figure’s head is created by volunteer artists at the Antioch Fine Arts Council and then turned over to the Chamber’s volunteers of carpenters, seamstresses and dressers who turn them into complete figures. An Ingleside man was released from a local hospital and into the custody of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office on Nov. 14, following a deputy involved shooting that took place on Nov. 2, according to a Lake County Sheriff’s Office press release. According to the release, Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched for a burglary in progress at approximately 4:45 a.m. on Nov. 2, at a residence in the 13200 block of West Greenview Drive, Wadsworth. The 911 caller indicated a man was attempting to burglarize her car. Sheriff’s Deputies, including a Canine Team, arrived and located the suspect in the area. The man ran from deputies. The man entered a running vehicle (warming-up) in a driveway in the 13300 block of West Greenview Drive. The vehicle he entered did not belong to him, but belonged to the homeowner. According to the release, the suspect attempted escaping in the vehicle but crashed into a tree. The suspect brandished a pistol and one of the sheriff’s deputies shot the man. The firearm was subsequently recovered from the suspect. “The man was transported to a local hospital in critical condition,” the release stated. Per protocol and state law, the Lake County Major Crime Task Force was requested to conduct an independent investigation of the
