The Antioch Library Friends host annual fall used book sale
A community gives thanks By Sandra Landen Machaj CORRESPONDENT
Each year as Thanksgiving approaches, many of us take the time to recognize and be thankful for all the blessings we have received. For some of us, there are many blessings for which to be thankful while for others there may be fewer. Everyone has something that they can be thankful for receiving, be it family friends, health, a home or a job. While each church community offers a Thanksgiving worship service, it is not always that an ecumenical service incorporates the work of different churches into one celebration as a group and reminds all of us of the need to be grateful for all that God has given. For approximately 18 years, various churches in the Antioch community have provided a variety of events that focus not only on their own prayer but also sharing with others in need. This year is no exception. Three church communities have banded together to plan and hold a community Thanksgiving worship service. The Church communities of St. Stephens, United Methodist and St. Ignatius of Antioch, who have previously joined together for other community activities, are this year sponsoring the community Thanksgiving worship service. This ecumenical program is open to all members of the Antioch community, regardless of church affiliation. “Having this service here is good for those for whom church is an important part of their lives and is also a good place for those who do not normally go to church,” said St. Stephens’ Pastor Rebecca Gordon. “For those not used to going to church it is a way to include them in this day of Thanksgiving without forcing them into a church setting where they may not be comfortable.” “The purpose of the day is of course to thank God for all that has been given and to also give back to the community,” said Pastor Gordon. “The event is free but if anyone wants to donate, all donations are going to Open Arms. Donations of supplies such as baby wipes, bar soap, diapers, tuna, jams and coffee are being collected by the various churches. Surprisingly coffee is considered a luxury in many poor families.” The service will consist of several activities along with the traditional worship. Music will be a large part of the evening.
