Members of the “Those Were the Days” Radio Players of Lake County Steve Dillie, Janet Hoshaw and Judy Koestner gather to ensure a good production. These three have been members of the group since its inception.

‘Those Were the Days’ Radio Players of Lake County By Sandra Landen Machaj CORRESPONDENT

Let’s step back in time, to the days when radio reigned. A time when evenings were spent gathered around the radio in the living room to enjoy the latest in family entertainment. No televisions, no streaming programs on the cell phone or computer, just favorites to entertain the whole family. This period of time began in the 1920s when commercial radio broadcasting began and would continue through the 1940s and into the 1950s. This early period of time has been known as the “golden age of radio.” At this time, a variety of programs were introduced that included radio plays. These radio plays ran the gamut from detective serials, mysteries, adventure stories and comedies to name a few. Each production was produced live. The national networks prohibited using recorded programs due to the inferior quality of the early recordings. It was not until the late 1940s that the quality of recorded works improved enough to allow them to be used on the air. But before this came

to be, there were a variety of programs on the radio that brought top vaudeville and dramatic actors to radio. Names such as George Burns and Gracie Allen, Orson Welles, Jack Benny, Minnie Pearl and Henry Morgan were but a few of the people who made their way into homes through the radio waves. These programs required the actors to bring their characters to life, while the listeners needed to visualize the setting of the drama and the actions of the actors. Sound effects such as people walking, doorbells ringing, doors opening and closing, guns shooting and a variety of others that are heard in everyday life are created using many different means. These unique programs that had been followed for so many years gradually declined as people became enamored with television. But they did not remain lost forever. In 1970, local broadcaster and historian Chuck Shaden began to host a program “Those Were the Days” on local radio which he would continue to host until 2009. On this program, Shaden would play recordings of some of the early

classic radio shows and tied this in with reminisces of old time radio. Interest in old time radio continued into the late 1900s. According to Judy Koestner and Janet Hoshaw, members of “Those Were the Days Radio Players of Lake County,” University of Illinois graduate Tom Terpak wanted some music to play and asked Chuck Shaden to lend him some tapes. Shaden gave him a box of tapes that included a tape of one of the old time radio shows, “The Shadow” which he began to show at school. Because of the popularity of the tape, a meeting was called by Chuck Shaden in January 1992 inviting people interested in old time radio. He expected about 30 people to show up but surprisingly over 100 attended the meeting. They were divided into four groups who began to learn the techniques of reproducing these old time performances. This was the beginning of “Those were the Days Radio Players in the Chicago” area. At this early meeting, Steve Dillie, Judy Koestner and Janet Hoshaw were
