The Village of Antioch is well known for families that have lived in the community for generations. So too are they known for businesses which have remained in the community for many years often being taken over by the next generation of the family.

One of these businesses that have been a part of the community for over 60 years is Raymond Chevrolet and Kia. When the automobile dealership was first opened over 60 years ago by Raymond Scarpelli and John Teresi, it was located in the center of town, on Main Street near Orchard. The dealership sold Chevrolet and Oldsmobile automobiles. It was not long before Raymond Scarpelli bought out Teresi’s share of the business and Raymond Chevrolet was born.

In 1973, outgrowing the space in downtown Antioch, the company purchased land on 173, east of Main Street, where they would have room to grow. And grow they did.

“In the mid 80s, my brother Ray and I returned to the family business after college,” said Raymond Auto group in Antioch’s Owner and Operator Mark Scarpelli.

At the Antioch location, Kia was added and a second location in Fox Lake was opened. The second location handles sales of Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge and Ram vehicles. In addition, they also sell used automobiles and provide in-house repairs and a body shop.

According to Scarpelli, they employ about 350 people and sell approximately 8,000 automobiles yearly.

“Over the years, the way customers shop for and purchase automobiles has changed,” said Scarpelli.

“With the use of the Internet, many people find the automobile they are looking for online before coming into the dealer. They no longer just head to the closest dealer. They search for the auto they are interested in. Customers come to the Antioch location from Burlington, Kenosha, Lake Geneva and from many locations in Illinois.”

While leasing used to be used primarily by businesses to provide autos for their employees, today many individuals choose this method of obtaining their automobiles. “Many customers choose to lease for three years rather than purchase their automobile. This way they have a new auto every three years and don’t have to put out the $35,000 or more for a new car.”

Because of the high cost of new automobiles, used car purchases are often the answer for many. “The nearly new autos are a quality option. Some may still

Tickets for the North Pole Express Trains for Village of Antioch residents will go on sale at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 18, at the Antioch Metra Station First, 311 Depot St., Antioch. The train will run on Tuesdays through Friday from Tuesday, Dec. 4, until Friday, Dec. 21.

The 3.5-hour round-trip excursion comes to life as the train departs the Antioch Metra Station for a journey to the “North Pole.” Children will join in and sing as the conductor goes around checking each of them in. Santa will join the group in the “North Pole.”

Christmas carols will be sung as they return back to the Antioch Metra Station. Children and adults are encouraged to wear pajamas to this event.

Residents with the zip code 60002 will be able to purchase resident tickets for $23 a person. Nonresidents tickets go on sale at 9 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 22, and will be $26 per person.

Tickets include lunch, crafts, hot chocolate and cookies and a visit with Santa. Tables seat six, seven, eight and nine people. Tickets are limited to six per family. Tickets must be purchased in person only and are limited to 62 per train. Children younger than 10 months are free, but are included in the six per family.

Mark Scarpelli has been a member of the National Automobile Dealers Association and served as its chairman in 2017.

The association is an organization of 16,500 auto dealers who work with lobbyists and legislatures on issues that help to make automobiles as safe as possible.

In 2017, Mark traveled over 200,000 miles working with the association that included a meeting at the White House with Vice President Pence and a trip to China.

People are often unaware that no automobile is composed entirely of parts from one country. On the invoice attached to the window, it not only tells the cost of the vehicle and what upgrades are included but it also lists the countries that provided parts for the vehicle and the percentage of parts from that country. Also listed is the country where the auto or truck has actually been assembled.

While the Raymond Auto Group has grown over the years, they have not forgotten the community that has supported them during this time.

They were part of the group that financially supported the movie theater on Lake Street.

By restoring the theater and upgrading the equipment to conform to current standards,

the community continues to have two theater screens showing first-rate films.

They support many of the activities in the community.

Antioch Chamber of Commerce to host Arts and Crafts Faire with a Halloween twist The Antioch Fall Arts and Crafts Faire will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 20, in downtown Antioch, Main St. and Orchard St., Antioch.

There will be over 85 booths with a beautiful array of arts and crafts, activities for children and food. There will also be a Monster Bash held near the faire. Kids can enjoy Treat the Streets from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday and Monster Bash from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday at the Bandshell.

Antioch’s annual Racing of the Wieners will be at 1 p.m. All dachshunds will be placed into three categories: miniature, tweenie and standard. All dogs must be purebred. Registration will be on-site and dogs must have a copy of their shot records to participate in the event. Prizes will be given for each category and all dogs must be leashed to enter the fair.

A 43-year-old Union Grove, Wisconsin, man is left with serious injuries following a traffic crash at approximately 1:15 a.m. on Oct. 13, in Lake Villa Township, according to a Lake County Sheriff’s Office press release.

According to the release, Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to the 39200 block of Route 45,

The Lake County Health Department and Community Health Center warns residents to avoid possible exposure to rabies by avoiding contact with bats, especially in their home.

So far in 2018, the Health Department has submitted 35 bats for testing, of which two tested positive for rabies: one in Libertyville and one in Gurnee.

“Bats are encountered frequently during the fall because of their migration and search for winter quarters in places like attics,” said Lake County Health Department’s Executive Director Mark Pfister. “Bats can carry rabies, so never touch them or attempt to remove them from your home.”

Residents should take the following preventative steps to protect themselves, their families and pets from bats and rabies: • Residents should not touch bats or attempt to remove them from a home. Report bats to

Animal Care and Control by calling 847-377-4700.

• Residents should not feed, touch or adopt wild animals or stray dogs and cats. Teach children to never handle unfamiliar animals, even if they appear friendly.

• Residents should vaccinate their pets and should not allow them to roam free. If bitten by a rabid bat, pets may develop rabies and present a risk to humans.

• Residents should safeguard their home. Bats can enter existing holes as small as .75-inches in diameter. Cover and seal possible access routes, especially around chimneys, vents, doors, windows and plumbing.

• Residents should seek immediate medical attention if they have been bitten or exposed to a bat.

Preliminary investigation shows the man was driving southbound on Route 45 north of West Grass Lake Road. For an unknown reason, the driver crossed into the northbound

lanes of traffic, drove off the east side of the roadway and into a ditch. The Dodge rolled over and the driver was ejected.

“The driver was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with serious injuries,” said the release.

Twice each year, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office partners with DEA on the national “Drug Take Back” program encouraging the public to prevent substance abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous, expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs. The service is free and anonymous and offered at the following three locations: • Beach Park Village Hall,

A trained animal warden will remove the bat at no cost, and the Health Department may submit the bat for rabies testing. The Health Department may refer callers to bat exclusion companies and provide information on methods for excluding bats.

Antioch Chamber of Commerce to host Arts and Crafts Faire with a Halloween twist The Antioch Fall Arts and Crafts Faire will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 20, in downtown Antioch, Main St. and Orchard St., Antioch.

Antioch’s annual Racing of the Wieners will be at 1 p.m. All dachshunds will be placed into three categories: miniature, tweenie and standard. All dogs must be purebred. Registration will be on-site and dogs must have a copy of their shot records to participate in the event. Prizes will be given for each category and all dogs must be leashed to enter the fair.

During the operation, the over 50 law-enforcement participants were divided into teams. Each team had multiple wanted subjects to investigate and apprehend. A total of 21 wanted individuals were apprehended during the operation. Additionally, an individual found to be in

possession of firearms and cannabis.

“Operation Safe Communities is a terrific example of countywide law enforcement working together to keep Lake County Safe. Without A/a we could drive SUVs but not minivans, trucks but not cars.

People could have feet but no hands, eyes but not ears, knees but not ankles, a nose without a face to put it on.

We’d have the sun without heat, clouds without rain, wind without air.

I could go on and on.

Suffice it to say that A/a has infiltrated the English language and we’d be lost without it. Well, not lost, per se, but certainly adrift, amiss and addled.

Thankfully, after about a week, three to five business days passed and my new keyboard arrived. I set it up and typed a few words to express how I was feeling: joyous, merry, gleeful, contented, delighted and awesome. Most definitely awesome.

Not a new world, per se; the world itself continued to spin and turn, but without A/a the earth and nature were goners. The universe, however, remained in its entirety.

Most states would cease to be without A/a.

Wisconsin would be one of only 15 to survive. And they’d get to keep their beer and cheese. Thank goodness for that.

Other things to be thankful for: we’d still have Kentucky and bourbon, Tennessee and country music, Mississippi and the river. We’d keep New York but lose Times Square.

Maybe it could become Times Circle?

America (sigh) would be no more.

The alphabet would, of course, be out of the question. Don’t even get me started.

Mom would still be mom. Dad simply dd, which before the demise of A/a had been relegated to a bra size.

Kids could still go to school and study history, English and science, but math would be a void equation. No one could ace a test and a grade of B

my keybo*rd is built specifically for my type of computer, so picking one up from the superstore isn’t possible. It must be ordered online, which I did.

But because I refused to cough up the fees for quick shipping, I found myself confronted with the dire truth of living with my non A/a condition for three to five business 24-four hour periods.

I decided to try to cope.

Life would go on. So would business. But things might be difficult. Would be difficult. My plight required discretion with word choice. Substitutions would be commonly needed – required, even.

While waiting for my keyboard, I decided to check if there was any information online about living without A/a.

It turns out non-use of specific letters in writing is actually a thing. It’s called a lipogram. Entire books have been written using this technique, although it’s easier to avoid lesser-used letters like Z/z or X/x. A/a proves to be a bit more of a challenge.

You don’t appreciate a letter until it no longer exists. Life without A/a

Lake County Health Department awarded grants to expand behavioral health capacity will provide $2 million over five years. Through the grant, the Health Department and PADS Lake County will form a team to serve individuals with mental illness and co-occurring substance use disorders who are in vulnerable housing situations.

Through the grant, the Health Department’s Community Support Services program will provide psychiatry, counseling and case management to program participants. Clients and their families will be linked to housing and additional support services including substance use treatment, crisis care, short-term residential programs, social security application assistance and primary care. The program is expected to serve 225 new clients in five years.

Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s Mental Health Awareness Training grant will provide $375,000 over three years to expand and improve Lake County’s Mental Health First Aid training initiatives. The

Health Department will continue its existing Youth Mental Health First Aid program, and through the grant will train 30 individuals per year to become Adult Mental Health First Aid trainers.

The Comprehensive Opioid Abuse Site-Based Program grant, administered by the U.S. Department of Justice, will provide $500,000 to expand Lake County’s “A Way Out” program, with a goal of reaching over 400 new participants by the end of the two-year grant.

Launched in 2016 by the Lake County Opioid Initiative, “A Way Out” helps connect individuals who are addicted to opioids or other drugs with substance abuse treatment. Participants can walk in to one of 13 participating police departments

and request “A Way Out” 24 hours a day, seven days a week without fear of prosecution. The Health Department provides screening and finds appropriate treatment for the person seeking help.

Through the grant, the Health Department will hire three full time staff – a dedicated program coordinator, an additional Crisis Care Program counselor and a navigator who will provide support and follow up to participants and their families. Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science will serve as research partners evaluating the effectiveness of the “A Way Out” program. They will also monitor the long-term individual and community outcomes for the project.
