“Dunn Museum visitors will experience a mini documentary focusing on Ross’ work at all stages of his life,” said Dunn Museum Exhibition and Collections Manager Steve Furnett. “The gallery will include both 2D and 3D work featuring some of Marvels greatest heroes and villains. Visitors will follow the artist’s journey from a young comic book fan, through art school, to becoming the creator of some of the comic world’s most iconic images.”

“Marvelocity” is his latest release, a curated collection of his best Marvel works over his career. The book, which includes painted pages, covers, childhood artwork and never-before-seen art, reunites Ross with Author Chip Kidd and Photographer Geoff Spear, who worked with Ross on a 2003 book, “Mythology,” a collection of his best works for DC Comics.

Ross, who resides in the Chicago area, says he is proud to say he does not use computers to create his work. Instead, he utilizes paper, pencils and gouache paint, which is a mix between watercolor and acrylic. A graduate of the American Academy of Art in Chicago, Ross is known for his realistic style.

A large variety of programs and events will take place during the six-month exhibit.

“It is really exciting to host an exhibit that has such broad appeal. Preschool students and their grandparents will both be mesmerized by the artwork with the same passion,” said Director of Education Nan Buckardt. “Superheroes cross all boundaries.”

The work of a renowned comic book artist is coming to the Dunn Museum. “Marvelocity: The Art of Alex Ross” will be on exhibit from March 9, through Sept. 8, at Dunn Museum, 1899 W. Winchester Road, Libertyville.

Considered one of the greatest artists in the field of comic books, Ross has created some of the most iconic images known to fans today.

For nearly 30 years, he has revitalized classic superheroes into works of fine art by illustrating characters including Spider-Man, Captain America, Iron Man, the Avengers and many more.

“The Dunn Museum is honored to be working with Alex Ross on his first museum exhibition in the Chicago metropolitan area,” said Lake County Forest Preserves’ educational facilities superintendent Andrew Osborne. “We have talked about doing a comic book exhibit for years.

Given the current popularity of Marvel and the release of the ‘Marvelocity’ book, we think the timing is perfect for an exhibition of this type. We are grateful for the opportunity to present Alex Ross’ remarkable body of work.”

Ross, often referred to as the “Norman Rockwell of comics,” started his craft at a young age. When he was three, he was drawing TV commercials from memory, and by 13, he was scripting and drawing his own original comics. Ten years later at the age of 23, Ross was hired by Marvel Comics to illustrate Marvel’s central characters in the groundbreaking comic book event, Marvels (1994.)

Gov. Bruce Rauner announced the Governor’s Office of Early Childhood Development has received a Preschool Development Grant Birth Through Five Initial Grant Award from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The grant is one of 45 distributed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Child Care to enhance early childhood programming, which includes Head Start and Early Head Start, state prekindergarten programs, childcare and home visiting services.

The Illinois Governor’s Office of Early Childhood Development will serve as the lead agency for the grant, which will allow the Office to develop a needs assessment and strategic plan and to strengthen the State’s system of early childhood programs.

“Decades of research have shown us that children who have a strong educational and developmental foundation before they start kindergarten are much more likely to be successful later in life,” Rauner said. “The PDG B-5 grant will bolster

our commitment to making sure that every child in Illinois is well-prepared for kindergarten and beyond.”

Promoting early childhood development has been a priority for Rauner since the beginning of his administration. In 2016, an executive order established the Governor’s Cabinet on Children and Youth, which convenes leaders from across state agencies to improve outcomes for Illinois children and families. One of the projects that the Children’s Cabinet has adopted is promoting early childhood workforce development.

“We are looking forward to the opportunity to work across Illinois’ early care and education systems to unify our planning and address barriers to access and quality, as we continue to meet the needs of our youngest children and their families,” said Governor’s Office of Early Childhood Development Executive Director Cynthia Tate, Ph.D. The PDG B-5 grant will run through Dec. 31, and the Office will have the opportunity to apply for renewal grants before the end of the year.

Couple reconciles; charity helps them help their daughter Dear W.C., I have nowhere else to turn. My life has been completely changed since my daughter was born with a heart defect. She was born two years ago and has been in and out of Children’s Hospital multiple times. We have medical bills we will be making payments on for years.

The stress of the constant medical care and endless sleepless nights took its toll on my marriage. My husband left four months ago due to the stress. He lost his job right before he left me because of the many days he missed at work when we were at the hospital. He finally started a new job this week, so hopefully he will be able to begin paying child support soon.

Unfortunately, the child support will come too late to prevent our eviction. I have been unable to pay our rent or utilities for the past three months. The small amount of money my husband gave us was used for food and gas to get to my daughter’s appointments. It is impossible for me to work until she is more stable.

I still have hope that my husband will return to us and we remain close friends. If my daughter and I could just be given help with our overdue rent we would be able to stay in our apartment, and I pray the doctors can fix my little girl.

Lake County Division of Transportation opens enrollment for Adopt-A-Highway program The Lake County Division of Transportation will accept applications of volunteers to help pick up litter and debris along Lake County highways and bike paths through Feb. 1.

Volunteers adopt a section of a county highway, and commit to cleaning it twice a year.

Safety vests and bags are provided. When the cleanup is done, the Division will collect the garbage bags and recycling bags from the side of the road.

An Adopt-A-Highway group should have

at least eight to ten people to help with the workload, but a group can have as many people as they would like. Participants must be ten or older, and need parental supervision for anyone younger than 18. The group might be family, friends, neighbors, co-workers or any other environmentally friendly minded people that an individual may know.

People ages 21 and older can create Subway Art during Art Ignite Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 21, at Lippert Community Center, 2200 E. Grass Lake Road, Lindenhurst.

Subway Art is a popular art form of arranging words of different fonts, colors, and sizes and embellishments in a pleasing design.

Guests will choose between a 12-by-12 inch or 16-by-20 inch canvas frame to create a customizable piece of art for the family with pre-cut “family” titles from thick cardstock/chipboard.

Not all families are the same, so along with a “family” title, and embossed red heart, guests will also be able to choose up to eight pre-cut titles for family members.

Marine Corps Recruiter charged with sexual assault Marine Corps Recruiter Alexander N. Louis, 27, of the 1800 block of Georgia Avenue, North Chicago, was arrested following an investigation of a sexual offense report that was made on Jan. 18, according to a Lake County Sheriff’s Office press release.

According to the release, an investigation was immediately launched by Lake County Sheriff’s Detectives.

Detectives discovered the possible suspect in the case was a 27-year-old Marine Corps Recruiter. The detailed investigation revealed the victim became acquainted with Louis as she was working to enlist in the Marine Corps.

Louis has been assigned to the Marine Corps Recruiting Center in Waukegan since 2016.

“On several occasions, Louis drove to the victim’s Lake Villa Township residence when her parents were not home,” the release stated.

Lake Geneva gets ready for annual Winterfest

The Lake Geneva area becomes a winter wonderland filled with exciting indoor and outdoor activities during Winterfest, which runs from Jan. 26 through Feb. 3.

The yearly festival gets people out of their January slumber and returns some of the excitement that they experienced during the holidays.

Favorite activities return along the shore of Geneva Lake and throughout the community that appeal to visitors of all ages.

Two lakefront activities make their debut at Winterfest.

New this year Located on Riviera Beach will be the Ice Castle, a frozen phenomenon said to bring fairy tales to life. The castle is built using hundreds of thousands of icicles hand placed by professional ice artists. The icicles are replaced daily as needed.

Myriad paths travel through the sculpture, which includes ice-carved tunnels, slides and beautiful fountains. Also inside are LED lights embedded in breathtaking sculptures and the ice castle’s walls, which add a gorgeous glow.

Traveling through the ice castles is reminiscent of taking a trip through the movie “Frozen.” Those who have been on Wrigley Drive in the past month cannot have missed this beautiful addition to the lakefront.

Snow sculpting returns

For many visitors, Winterfest’s main event is the annual National Snow Sculpting Championship in which teams of expert snow sculptors turn large mounds of snow into intricate sculptures. The competition is held in front of the Riviera and continues into Flat Iron Park.

Teams have qualified by winning state titles. The competition will begin on Jan. 30. Over the next few days, onlookers may see some of the artists, working through the night by flashlight if needed, as the mounds of snow are transformed.

On Feb. 2 from 11a.m. to 1 p.m., visitors may vote for their favorite sculpture for the People’s Choice Award.

Pick up ballots at the Riviera Ballroom starting at 10 a.m. and return them by 1 p.m.

Awards will be announced at 3 p.m.

In Flat Iron Park, there also will be an area of snow sculptures created by local children.

Other events Hawk’s View Golf Club on Krueger Road will be the home of the fourth annual chili cook-off, which involves more than just chili.

It will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 2.

Chili sampling begins at 11:30 a.m. and continues until it’s gone. Tasters may vote for the People’s Choice

Award.
