Antioch Township makes changes By Gail Peckler-Dziki CORRESPONDENT
EARLENE FREDERICK Hi-Liter
Entering with a bang
Wilmot Mountain rung in the new year with a celebration on Dec. 31, when revelers came together for a night on the dance floor while others hit the ski hill slopes amid subzero temperatures. At around 10 p.m., ski enthusiasts and revelers took a pause to watch a fireworks show over the ski hill.

Tom Shaughnessy, who was appointed as Steve Smouse’s replacement in early December, presided over his first meeting as township supervisor on Dec. 29. Shaughnessy was sworn in at a special meeting on Dec. 19 at 5 p.m. and held his first township board meeting, a special meeting, on Dec. 29 at 5 p.m. The first order of business on Dec. 29 was to appoint Keri-Lyn Krafthefer from the law firm of Ancel, Glink, Diamond, Bush, DiCianni & Krafthefer, P. C. as township attorney. After motions were made, trustee Peter Grant, who was the lone no vote on the township attorney matter, asked a number of questions, including various lawsuits in other townships in which Krafthefer was the attorney. He also questioned why she wrote a response to Public Access Bureau Chief Steven Silverman regarding a recent request for review into the Nov. 16 Antioch Township board executive session. Silverman had addressed the letter sent to the township regarding the Dec. 7 request to Antioch Township trustee Steve Turner, since there was no supervisor with the pass-
ing of Smouse. Turner had made the motion to enter into the closed session to discuss the laws and rules regarding the appointment of a new supervisor and to determine a process. The request for review alleges that it was an improper reason for a closed session. That allegation was added to when, at the Dec. 14 meeting, trustee Kris Shepherd stated that removing longtime township attorney Larry Clark was discussed in that same closed session. Grant asked Krafthefer “on whose authority did you respond?” Krafthefer, who attended the Dec. 29 meeting remotely, never stated on whose authority she responded but did answer in the affirmative that if the board voted not to pay the bill, it would be pro-bono work. Grant also asked if certain local lawyers such as Bob Long, Antioch village attorney and Matt DeMartini, were considered. Shaughnessy replied, “Of course I considered them, but I decided that this would be best for the township, with all her experience. We can still use local attorneys if that would be better at certain times.”
