Two area schools awarded conservation grants School in Round Lake. While the grant helps grades 9-12 at the Gages Lake school, the Round Lake school plans to assist students in grades 1-7, but they both have the same proposed project, a pollinator garden. “The Illinois Schoolyard Habitat Action Grant program provides children and educators with an opportunity to develop wildlife habitat and increase the use of native plants in Illinois landscapes,” IDNR Director Wayne Rosenthal said. “By participating in these projects, students learn
that their efforts can make a difference in the world, and they gain experience in problem-based learning by planning, developing and maintaining the habitat.” The Illinois Schoolyard Habitat Action Grant program supports the development or enhancement of wildlife habitat on the school grounds or other public places. Funding for the program is provided through donations to the ICF. The Jadel Youth Fund and the Daniel F. and Ada L. Rice Foundation are the

Of the 21 schools that received grants through the Illinois Conservation Foundation, the facilitator of the Schoolyard Habitat Action Grant, two came from Lake County. According to the joint announcement between the state’s Department of Natural Resources and the ICF, the 21 schools received a collective $18,303, with two $1,000 grants going to the Lake County schools. The Lake County schools are Cyd Lash Academy High School, of Gages Lake, and Nature Walk Montessori
major sponsors for the program. More than $255,000 in Illinois Schoolyard Habitat Action Grant funding has been distributed since the program’s inception. “We want school children to learn about nature through hands-on experiences,” Rosenthal added. “It
is our goal to have Illinois Schoolyard Habitat Action Grant program projects developed in every county of the state, and eventually at every school. So far, we have supported projects in 84 of Illinois’ counties.” Applications will be accepted soon for the Nov. 30
Illinois Schoolyard Habitat Action Grant application deadline. See https://www.dnr.illinois.gov/education/Pages/ GrantsSHAG.aspx for the application form and related information or call 217-5244126 or email dnr.teachkids@illinois.gov.

Road rules
Illinois Secretary of State Speaker’s Bureau instructor Steve Prostram discusses the Rules of the Road with senior citizens at the Antioch Township offices, 1625 Deep Lake Road, on Jan. 19. The event was a part of the Mobile Driver Services Facility program put on by the Secretary of State’s office. Seniors who attended were brought up to speed on topics such as license renewal and testing requirements and costs, as well as having any of their questions answered. Other state employees also were available to do on-site vision screening, driver’s license renewal, replacement and corrections, vehicle sticker sales and enrollment in the organ and tissue donor program. Tractor Supply comes to town By Gail Peckler-Dziki CORRESPONDENT
Burlington Tractor Supply Company is expanding south of the border and has purchased 3.71 acres of the Antioch Tax Incremental Fund (TIF) District for $429,900. The Antioch Village Board approved the developer’s agreement for the project at the Jan. 8 regular board meeting. The Antioch Planning and Zoning Commission reviewed and approved the site plan at the Jan. 16 meeting and recommended approval to the village board. The Tractor Supply parcel is located at the northeast corner of Grimm Road and Route 83. The establishment is a retail chain of stores that offers
products for home improvement, agriculture, lawn and garden maintenance, and livestock, equine and pet care. It is a leading U.S. retailer in its market and headquartered in Brentwood, Tenn. The Village of Antioch purchased the 50-acre Boylan site as the Redevelopment Project Area for $1 million, or $20,000 an acre. TSC plans to build a 19,000-square-foot building on the site. Community Development Director Michael Garrigan said this site in Antioch is a good fit for the store. “We have some rural areas with farmettes. People near Antioch have horses. This is a good market for this retail establishment,” Garrigan said.
Garrigan said that he is in contact with several other businesses that are considering a move to the TIF district. “While we can offer some incentives such as infrastructure and tax incentives in the TIF district,” he said. “We can’t give any assistance toward the actual building of the structures.” The realignment and rebuilding of Grimm Road is part of the redevelopment plan. “Since the property was annexed into the Village of Antioch the entire road is under village jurisdiction,” Garrigan said. Currently, Grimm Road is in poor repair and the intersection of Grimm Road and Route 83 is considered dangerous.
