Sheriff’s Office in search of wanted Ingleside man The Lake County Sheriff’s Office is in search of information leading to the whereabouts of a wanted sexual offender, according to a Lake County Sheriff’s Office press release dated Jan. 15.

According to the release, in November of 2018, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office became aware of an incident where a previously convicted sexual offender, Barry A. Deacon, 34, of the 35600 block of North Greenleaf Avenue, Ingleside, made sexual advances toward a juvenile family member.

A thorough investigation ensued, and Sheriff’s Detectives determined the juvenile was visiting some of her relaBarry A. tives in the Deacon 35600 block of North Greenleaf Avenue, on Nov. 10, 2018. While visiting her family, Deacon sexually assaulted her.

Following the investigation, Sheriff’s Detectives at-

tempted to locate Deacon but determined he fled from the residence, likely to avoid apprehension. Sheriff’s Detectives obtained two arrest warrants for Deacon. One warrant is for two counts of Failure of a Sexual Offender to Report Change of Address, which are Class Three Felonies. This warrant was issued because Deacon is required by law to notify law-enforcement when he is no longer living at a residence, and he hasn’t done so since fleeing his Greenleaf

PM&L Theatre starts 2019 off with Ken Ludwig’s ‘The Game’s Afoot’ “The Game’s Afoot” by Ken Ludwig opens Friday, Feb. 8, and will run Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays until Feb. 24, at the theatre, 877 Main St., Antioch. The performance is under the direction of Lorrie Ferguson who’s previous PM&L directing credits include “Man of La Mancha,” “The Mousetrap” and “A Flea in Her Ear.” Internationally acclaimed Broadway star made famous for his portrayal as Sherlock Holmes William Gillette, played by John Franco, of Kenosha, invites his fellow cast members to his Connecticut castle during a weekend in December of 1936. When one of his guests is stabbed to death, the merriment quickly turns murderous. Gillette takes a page out of Sherlock Holmes’s playbook and takes

it upon himself to stop the killer before the next victim is claimed. Dangerous and hilarious, this is a classic “whodunit” set during the Christmas holiday.

The play will run at 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Sunday matinee performances will be at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are available online and are $18 for adults and $15 for students and seniors.

The “Walks in the Woods” quilt exhibit created by Frieda Anderson will be open until Sunday, Feb. 3, at Lost Valley Visitor Center, Glacial Park, Route 31 and Harts Road, Ringwood.

Frieda’s quilts are inspired by the everyday scenery that surrounds her and the colors of the Midwest landscape. She works with her own hand dyed cotton and silk fabrics. The ways the dyed fabric look influence the rhythm of her work and the way she uses color in her pieces and often affects how she quilts her quilts. Trees and leaves are a big part of what influences her designs.

Frieda has been making quilts for over 40 years and is currently a BERNINA Ambassador working on the new BERNINA 770Q domestic home sewing machine.

She is also an instructor and author, having written several books, articles and publications on the fine art of quilting.

The exhibit is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. It is free and open to the public.

Within a few weeks the volunteers had her apartment painted. They also provided chairs that one of them no longer

needed and they found a wonderful table on clearance that they could all sit at and share a meal.

The senior woman was grateful for the new bed, stating it was the most comfortable one she had ever slept on. She was scheduled to have cataract surgery and did not worry about getting back and forth to the doctor on her own.

She now had several new friends who were willing to help. She would be seeing the dentist once her cataract surgery was completed.

When the letter writer saw the woman again at church, she was amazed at her transformation. The former was surprised when the senior woman invited her over and found out they lived close enough that she could drive the senior woman to church and offered to take her grocery shopping afterward.

It was a transformation that was made possible thanks to all of you. I

have found many people are willing to help. Our volunteers are a valuable part of everything we do at Time Is Now. Their help and your donations give us the strength and resources to do all we do. It’s wonderful that together we carry the Christmas spirit throughout the year.

Health department in search of mental health first aid instructors The Lake County Health Department will host a weeklong class to train approved instructors to teach adult Mental Health First Aid courses.

The five-day training will be from Feb. 18, until Feb. 22, at the Lake County Health Department, 3010 Grand Ave., Waukegan.

“More than 50 percent of people will be diagnosed with a mental illness or disorder at some point in their lifetime,” said Lake County Health Department’s Executive Director Mark Pfister. “This initiative to train and certify individuals to help someone experiencing a mental health crisis is not only timely, but necessary to meet the rising demand in our community.”

Approved instructors learn how to teach the adult Men-

tal Health First Aid course, including the five-step action plan, evidence-supported treatment and self-help strategies. The training normally costs $2,000 per person but is being offered for free to qualified applicants. In exchange, individuals who take the course agree to teach three eight-hour Mental Health First Aid classes in 2019.

To be considered for certification, candidates must possess empathy towards individuals with behavioral health challenges and should have enthusiasm to reduce stigma associated with mental illness. Applicants should also have: • A general knowledge of mental health and substance use issues • Experience teaching

groups of adults • Understanding of best practices in adult learning • Experience facilitating groups In October 2018, the Health Department received a grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to help expand and improve Lake County’s Mental Health First Aid training initiatives. Through the grant, the Health Department will train 30 individuals per year to become instructors. In turn, those individuals will train 2,250 community members over a three-year period.

According to the U.S Fire Administration, 2,900 home fire incidents reported each year in the U.S are caused by clothes dryers. Over the years, these fires have caused millions of dollars in property damage, severe injuries and even death. The U.S. Fire Administration states that failure to properly maintain dryer vents, especially in the fall and winter seasons, leads to the high rate of home fires.

Dryer vent cleaning is crucial at all times. Cleaning the vents ensures minimum buildup of lint in the lint filter as well as the seamless passage of air in the exhaust vents. It is even more important that the clothes dryer remains lint-free during winter because it is the season when people tend to use heavy clothing and bedding to keep the cold away.

Lint is made of tiny bits of fibers shed by clothing and bedding during the cleaning process. When garments are put into the washer, lint will be shed from the clothes. Some lint is only released during the drying process. While drying, an air stream will sweep through the clothes blowing the lint off and trapping it in

the lint filter.

Materials like wool and heavier cotton fabrics commonly used in cold weather generate more lint. In other words, the thicker the clothing, the more lint is produced; hence the reason why more lint will be accumulated in your dryer during winter. Lint is highly flammable. The possibility of a dryer fire breakout increases with lint buildup.

Warning signs It is essential to keep track of how often the dryer vent is cleaned. The following are signs to alert people that there is more than enough lint in the lint filter: • The laundry room becomes hot and humid: If lint is largely accumulated in the dryer vent, it becomes hard for the exhaust vents to push air out of the house. And because eventually, the hot air has to go somewhere, it will start leaking into the laundry room.

• The dryer is too hot to touch: if garments or the dryer itself are too hot at the end of a cycle, the lint filter should be checked.

Health department in search of mental health first aid instructors The Lake County Health Department will host a weeklong class to train approved instructors to teach adult Mental Health First Aid courses.

The five-day training will be from Feb. 18, until Feb. 22, at the Lake County Health Department, 3010 Grand Ave., Waukegan.

“More than 50 percent of people will be diagnosed with a mental illness or disorder at some point in their lifetime,” said Lake County Health Department’s Executive Director Mark Pfister. “This initiative to train and certify individuals to help someone experiencing a mental health crisis is not only timely, but necessary to meet the rising demand in our community.”

Approved instructors learn how to teach the adult Men-

tal Health First Aid course, including the five-step action plan, evidence-supported treatment and self-help strategies. The training normally costs $2,000 per person but is being offered for free to qualified applicants. In exchange, individuals who take the course agree to teach three eight-hour Mental Health First Aid classes in 2019.

To be considered for certification, candidates must possess empathy towards individuals with behavioral health challenges and should have enthusiasm to reduce stigma associated with mental illness. Applicants should also have: • A general knowledge of mental health and substance use issues • Experience teaching

groups of adults • Understanding of best practices in adult learning • Experience facilitating groups In October 2018, the Health Department received a grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to help expand and improve Lake County’s Mental Health First Aid training initiatives. Through the grant, the Health Department will train 30 individuals per year to become instructors. In turn, those individuals will train 2,250 community members over a three-year period.

The Johnsburg Police Department has announced the eighth annual Citizen’s Police Academy Class will begin in February 2019, and will meet for two to three hours once a week for a total of nine weeks.

The program is intended to educate adult citizens about police work and is designed to give the public a working knowledge of the department’s organization, personnel, policies and procedures.

The academy is not designed as a preparatory class for individuals who desire to become a law enforcement officer.

Rather, it is intended as an educational and informative offering for adults who both reside or work within the village and have a desire to learn more about their police

department. Enrolled citizens will be encouraged to build a lasting partnership with the department, with the ultimate goal of reducing crime and improving the quality of life in the neighborhoods.

Topics covered will include the history and evolution of law enforcement, firearms familiarization, patrol tactics, gangs, drug enforcement, special response team operations, canine patrol, criminal law, crime prevention, media relations, crime scene processing, investigations and more.

A variety of instructors from the Johnsburg Police Department, and guests, will present an assortment of topics in order to provide the public with a comprehensive view of police work and the

criminal justice system.

The academy is offered free of charge to Johnsburg citizens as well as business owners and employees. Anyone interested in applying for the Academy must complete an application, which involves a criminal background check and must meet the following criteria: • Must be 21 years old or older • No prior felony conviction • No outstanding warrants • No pending criminal cases Class size is limited to eight participants, and the class will fill quickly.

The Johnsburg Educational Partnership Foundation will host a “Winter Wine Tasting Fundraiser” from 7 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 26, at the Johnsburg Community Club, 2315 W. Church St., Johnsburg. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Guests will enjoy wine samplings and appetizers while playing to win raffle baskets, 50/50 cash drawing and a drop raffle. There will also be a cash bar.

Wine tastings are provided by the International House of Wine and Cheese in Richmond. All proceeds from this event will support the purchase of Chromebooks for District 12 classrooms.

The cost is $30 per person if they are registered by Saturday, Jan. 12, or $35 after Jan. 12.

The McHenry Township and McHenry Township Fire Protection District will host a community blood drive from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 26, at McHenry Township Hall, 3703 N. Richmond Road.

The blood drive donation process begins with registration; a health history is taken and a mini-physical is given.

The actual donation takes about 10 minutes and equals approximately one pint of blood.

A photo ID is required at donation time. Donors are encouraged to eat a meal prior to giving blood and drink plenty of water. Blood donation requirements include a minimum weight of 110 pounds and minimum age of 16. There is no upper age limit for donating blood.

Ecologist joins Lake County Forest Preserve Pati Vitt, Ph.D., joined the Lake County Forest Preserves where she will work in the Natural Resources Department. Vitt will serve as the manager of ecological restoration. She previously worked for the Chicago Botanic Garden where she fulfilled several roles, including the senior scientist and manager of conservation programs.

Vitt is now an adjunct assistant professor of plant biology and conservation at Northwestern University and has authored many articles on seeds and plants. Since Larry’s retirement from the Sheriff’s Office, he’s worked in Afghanistan and the Middle East, providing U.S. and Coalition Forces training and support in Counter Terrorism, close quarter battle, defensive tactics, mission planning and leadership mentoring. Additionally, he has provided defensive tactics training to the DEA at Quantico and the U.S. Coast Guard MSST Team.

Undersheriff Oliver will be responsible to oversee the day-to-day operations of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

This includes the Corrections Division, Administration Division and Operations Division, which encompass all employees of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
