Grimm Road could close in February By Gail Peckler-Dziki CORRESPONDENT

The Booker T. Washington Progressive Club is a special exhibition that will be on display from Jan. 19, through Feb. 24, at the Dunn Museum, 1899 W. Winchester Road, Libertyville. Visitors can celebrate African-American History Month by learning about the Booker T. Washington Progressive Club, an African American-led civic organization located in Zion, from 1936 to 1982. The Club’s mission was to unite individuals “interested in promoting the cause of good citizenship, better civic relations and any topic that improved local relationships.” Retired railroad porter Richard H. Williamson founded the club after he came to Zion in 1902 to join John Alexander Dowie’s church. Dowie’s strongly enforced policy against racism attracted African Americans to join his church and settle in Zion. The Club was named for the founder of the Tuskegee Institute, an AfricanAmerican college in Alabama. Membership of the Club was open to all, and people joined from communities from Racine, Wisconsin, to Maywood. The Club’s civic contributions included sending care packages to service men and women during World War II, raising money to build the Pierce Campus for Zion High School, raising money to maintain the Faith Sunshine Nursery in Waukegan and sending clothing for the students of the Tuskegee Institute. The Club was most active through the 1960s after which membership began to decline. In 1982, the Club dissolved, selling its clubhouse at 2103 Gabriel in Zion.

Antioch village administrator Jim Keim outlined reasons to close Grimm Road prior to improvements at a 10 a.m. Jan. 10, public information meeting. About 15 area residents and public officials attended the meeting. Grimm Road has become a cut through for drivers wishing to avoid the stoplight at State Routes 83 and 173. Keim said that road was never built to handle the thousands of cars that travel it daily. The pavement of Grimm Road is failing, pot-holes have been created and driving is hazardous, causing damage to tires and rims. There are only two driveways that access Grimm Road. These are east of Sequiot Creek. During a partial shutdown of Grimm Road, these would still have access. The intersection of Grimm and Route 172 is skewed and dangerous. Keim presented accident data for that intersection and compared it to three other intersections. From Jan. 1, 2016, to Nov. 30, 2018, there were 44 accidents at Grimm and 173. For that same time period, there were 35 accidents at the intersection of Deep Lake Road and 173; 21 accidents at Routes 83 and 172 and five accidents at Savage Road and 173. The improved Grimm Road would intersect Route 173 west of Sequiot Creek, at a 90-degree angle and would have turn lanes. It would
