Antioch Township continues AAHAA support By Gail Peckler-Dziki CORRESPONDENT

Above: Residents of all ages gather under the “big top” to play bingo, just one of the activities at this year’s Lindenfest held on the grounds of the Lindenhurst Village Hall, 2301 E. Sand Lake Rd., Lindenhurst, on Saturday, Aug 12. The four-day festival ran Thursday through Sunday. In addition to bingo, the event featured live music, an auction, carnival rides, games, and the 2017 Miss Lindenhurst Pageant held on Thursday evening at the main stage. Right: Lindenhurst’s newly-crowned queens, left to right, Junior Miss Lindenhurst Kelly Eppel, 12, Little Miss Lindenhurst Savannah Romig, 6, whose slice of pizza nearly outweighed her, and Miss Lindenhurst Alyssa Costa, 16, take a break from their official duties to enjoy a snack at the 2017 edition of Lindenfest held on the grounds of the Lindenhurst Village Hall, 2301 E. Sand Lake Rd., Lindenhurst, on Saturday, Aug 12. The young ladies were selected to be the village’s

royal representatives for the next year during the annual pageant held only two days earlier at Lindenfest. Alyssa also was voted Miss Congeniality and Miss Sweetest of Smiles while Kelly was awarded Junior Miss Sweetest of Smiles. The four-day festival closed on Sunday evening.

Antioch Township almost did not pay this month’s bills after the first motion to pass the matter failed in a 3-2 decision. Voting against the matter were trustees Steve Turner, Kris Shepard and Judy Davis. The three voted no because of a disagreement related to a $1,100 monthly payment to the Antioch Area Health Access Alliance. However, after a series of discussions at the Aug. 10 meeting, the township voted 4-1 to pay this month’s bills and continue contributing to AAHAA. Turner remained the lone no vote on both measures. Township supervisor Steve Smouse, who attempted to streamline the process, tried to move the AAHAA presentation before the bill came to a vote. Turner, skeptical, questioned Smouse. “Do you think people are going to change their minds?” Shepard, elected last April, believes the taxpayers should decide on the AAHAA payment. “I don’t think we can decide where our taxpayers should donate money. We can put it on the website, and residents can decide if they want

to donate,” Shepard said. “We are a governmental body, not a charitable organization.” For the past several years, AAHAA has received donations from the Antioch Township. Questions were raised at a meeting on July 13, when board members questioned Trustee Peter Grant’s vote on the donation while serving on the AAHAA board of directors. Grant, who receives no money on the AAHAA board, strictly serves as a volunteer for the organization. AAHAA representatives and other Alliance board members, including Antioch Village Trustee Mary Dominak spoke in support of the organization at the Aug. 10 regular board meeting. Additionally, AAHAA Executive Director Colleen Lennon and registered nurse Maureen Cull touted the benefits of helping people. Cull talked about one retired married couple that needed assistance coping with rising medical costs. “They had worked their whole lives and saved for retirement,” Cull said. “They thought they did everything right. And then their prescription costs skyrocketed and
