The Antioch fine Arts Foundation (AFAF) is gearing up for the annual major fundraising event scheduled for October 11 from 6 to 9:30 p.m. at Anastasia’s Restaurant and Sports Lounge, located at 950 Hillside in Antioch, Illinois.

A few of the artists involved there and some of their friends sat down with the Hi-Liter and talked about the benefit the community receives from AFAF. Some were new to AFAF and there because of the book club they belong to with Beverly Walczak, one of the founding members of AFAF. One book club member, Gayle Burns, explained, “We are reading The Art Forger and we have all been moved to explore art, both on a local level and general level.”

This was her first time in AFAF and she was excited to see the work of so many talented, local artists.

Other founding members present at the interview were Roger Shule, Beverly, Ron Daiss and Margie Krutsch.

mately 9:40 p.m., Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to the 27900 block of West Wilmot Road, Antioch, for a traffic crash with injuries. The 911 caller indicated one of the vehicle’s occupants was lying in the roadway.

Sheriff’s Deputies arrived and located the passenger, a 38-year-old female of Silver Lake, WI, in the roadway. She was subsequently transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. Sheriff’s Deputies determined the driver fled from the scene.

Preliminary investigation shows a 2003 Kia Sorento, likely being driven by a 29-year-old male of Silver Lake, WI, was traveling westbound on Wilmot Road, approaching the Wisconsin border, when the driver failed to properly negotiate a curve in the roadway. The vehicle drove off the roadway and struck a tree. The driver then fled from the scene, leaving his injured passenger behind.

Sheriff’s Deputies on the scene obtained leads on the identity of the driver. At approximately 11:00 p.m., Sheriff’s Deputies located the driver hiding in a garage in the 42300 block of Willow Street, Antioch. The driver was subsequently transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries which he sustained in the crash. The crash remains under investigation and charges are likely.

Operation Drop Box, a campaign to gather household goods for veterans, began collecting donations Sept. 9.

McHenry County Department of Health (MCDH) is joining forces with partners Country Financial, McHenry County Division of Transportation (McDOT), McHenry County Veterans Assistance Commission (VAC), TLS Veterans, and volunteers from the McHenry County Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) in asking community members to donate requested items that will help give county veterans a boost.

Continuing until Oct. 21, new and unused items such as non-perishable food and new socks can be dropped at locations throughout the county.

Paddock Lake brothers accused of leading massive drug operation Officials looking for possible links to THC vaping injuries

Authorities said courageous parents from Waukesha helped uncover a massive counterfeit THC vaping cartridge manufacturing operation in Kenosha County and resulted in the arrest of two Paddock Lake brothers.

The brothers, Tyler Huffhines, 20, and Jacob Huffhines, 23, were formally charged in Kenosha County Circuit Court on Monday with 10 collective counts, inTaylor cluding eight Huffhines felonies.

Jacob Huffhines, previously convicted of manufacture and delivery of cocaine – second and subsequent offense in Racine County, is accused of possessing a firearm by a felon; possession of cocaine, second and subsequent offense; possession of cocaine, second and subsequent offense; possession of THC; possession of drug paraphernalia as well as possession of a controlled substance.

The two brothers made their initial appearances in Kenosha County Circuit Court Monday, with Tyler Huffhines held on $500,000 cash bond while Jacob remains jailed on $50,000 cash bond and a felony probation hold.

Lesli Bose, a Waukesha County deputy district attorney, is overseeing the case as a special prosecutor because the investigation started in the City of Waukesha.

The brothers cannot have contact with one another, discuss the case with their mother, must refrain from committing more crimes and are also prohibited from visiting the properties involved in the investigation.

Massive operation According to Kenosha County Sheriff David Beth, the operation involving hundreds of thousands of dollars could be the largest of its kind in the county, and could be one of the biggest in the nation.

“This is one of the largest drug operations we have had in Kenosha,” he said at a Sept. 11 news conference.

“Of this type, it is the largest we have ever had.”

“As for as I know, it is probably one of the largest in the country.”

Beth, meanwhile, indicated the investigation is still ongoing and authorities are looking into whether the Huffhines’ scheme is

related to a statewide and national epidemic involving hundreds of people who’ve suffered severe lung injuries from vaping devices.

“I am very curious and we are willing to work with any agency in this country… to see if our people here in Kenosha County had any responsibility in hurting hundreds of people throughout the United States, especially in Wisconsin,” Beth told reporters.

Parental accountability The investigation started in the City of Waukesha, where parents discovered their son in possession of a vaping device, and decided to hold the teen accountable.

City of Waukesha Police Capt. Dan Baumann said the parents should be commended for their courageous actions.

“If it wasn’t for these parents coming through and holding their son accountable, I don’t think we would be here today,” he said. “I am very grateful for these parents. There was a huge accountability component to these courageous parents.”

Authorities with the City of Waukesha Police Department later learned through their investigation these vaping devices were being distributed at Waukesha-area high schools and eventually discovered Huffhines’ alleged link.

“These high school-aged kids were distributing and utilizing vaping cartridges containing THC,” Baumann said. “This was all in the high schools and they were distributing this within the Waukesha community.”

Social media monitoring According to a criminal complaint, investigators in the City of Waukesha began the investigation as early as July, and later discovered an alleged link to the Huffhines’ brothers in Kenosha County through a confidential informant.

The confidential informant told police Tyler Huffhines was the “head of a drug operation that was manufacturing a THC cartridges in hotel rooms.”

The informant, meanwhile, indicated Tyler Huffhines started operating out of a condominium unit in the Village of Bristol.

The Waukesha detective then placed Tyler Huffhines under surveillance, where he saw Huffhines driving a luxury vehicle into a condominium unit used to manufacture the cartridges.

Eventually, authorities looked at Tyler Huffhines’ SnapChat account, which allegedly had photographs and videos showing large boxes containing THC cartridges in the garage.

While authorities watched Tyler Huffhines social media activity, they learned that he flew to California, where he allegedly planned to purchase 40 to 50 jars of THC distillate to manufacture additional THC cartridges.

The complaint later contends Tyler Huffhines told investigators he flew to the

west coast with $300,000 cash for the purchase.

Warrant executed At the crack of dawn on Sept. 5, City of Waukesha Police, the Racine County Metro Drug Unit and Kenosha Drug Operations Group executed simultaneous search warrants at the Bristol condominium, 7937 Williamsburg Court, and a Paddock Lake home the brothers share with their mother.

At the Bristol condominium, authorities seized 31,200 vaping cartridges filled with one gram of THC each, 98,000 unfilled vaping cartridges, 57 mason jars filled with 1,616 ounces of refined liquid THC, 18 pounds of marijuana, and money counting machines, among other items.

“At that condo, they found an operation that really is incredible,” Beth said.

In Paddock Lake, officials seized $59,000, eight firearms with ammunition, 0.6 grams of cocaine, 10.6 grams of marijuana, Xanax, nine cellular phones as well as miscellaneous drug paraphernalia.

Investigators then discovered the filled THC cartridges were highly potent, indicating 1,000 milligrams in each rather than the usual 5 milligrams.

“It is 157 times the potency,” Beth said.

The State Crime Lab, according to Beth, is still looking into whether other drugs were cut into the THC oil.

Tyler Huffhines, however, decided to stay close to home by attending Carthage College.

While he was on the football roster as a freshman, Tyler Huffhines was not on the team as a sophomore, according to the school website.

As for Jacob Huffhines, he was the subject of drug investigations in both Kenosha and Racine counties, with the most recent conviction coming in March 2018.

Jacob Huffhines was initially charged with two felony counts of manufacture and delivery cocaine along with maintaining a drug trafficking place with second and subsequent offense modifiers.

He was convicted on one of two manufacture/deliver counts, had the rest of the charges dismissed.

As part of the conviction, Jacob Huffhines spent 90 days in Racine County Jail followed by probation, contingent on him meeting conditions of his parole.

Those conditions included refraining from possessing any firearms or drugs.

According to the Racine County criminal complaint,

through a confidential informant, the Racine County Metro Drug Unit purchased cocaine from Jacob Huffhines twice.

The first happened in the City of Racine on Sept.

12, 2017, and the second occurred in the Village of Union Grove, where an informant met with him near Union Grove Baseball Park at 14th Avenue and State Street.

“The Union Grove sale took place 656.05 feet away from the Union Grove Baseball Park,” the complaint states.

Jacob Huffhines, according to the complaint, was classified as a repeater because of a 2017 conviction in Kenosha County.

The 2017 conviction for misdemeanor possession of THC stemmed from a Dec. 17, 2016, traffic stop in the Village of Bristol.

According to the Kenosha County criminal complaint, a deputy who stopped him detected a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle.

The traffic stop, meanwhile, uncovered 28.4 grams of marijuana.

The following arrests in Lake County were reported by the Lake County Sheriff’s Dept. Suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

To date, the 26 instructors certified in February have trained 438 community members in Mental Health First Aid, and more than 500 referrals to mental health services have been made.

Health Department seeks mental health first aid instructors

The Lake County Health Department is seeking passionate people to become Mental Health First Aid USA instructors and help fight the stigma surrounding mental health.

Approved applicants must attend the 5-day instructor training held October 28-November 1, 2019 at the Lake County Health Department, 3010 Grand Avenue, Waukegan.

“In the United States, only 41 percent of the people who had a mental disorder in the past year received professional health care or other services,” said Sam Johnson-Maurello, the Health Department’s Director of Behavioral Health. “We need people representing every facet of our community to be trained in Mental Health First Aid so they can help those who are experiencing a mental health crisis.”

Approved instructors learn how to teach the Adult Mental Health First Aid course, including the five-step action plan, evidence-supported treatment, and self-help strategies. Instructor training normally costs $2,000 per person but is being offered for free to qualified applicants. In exchange, individuals who take the course agree to teach three 8-hour Mental Health First Aid classes in 2020.

To be considered for certification, candidates must possess empathy towards individuals with behavioral health challenges and should have enthusiasm to reduce stigma associated with mental illness. Through the grant, the Health Department is training 30 individuals per year to become instructors. In turn, those individuals will train 2,250 community members over a three-year period.

PM&L holding auditions for ‘The Best Christmas Pageant Ever’ Open auditions for The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, a holiday comedy by Barbara Robinson, will be held on Monday, Oct. 7, and Tuesday, Oct. 8, beginning at 6:30 pm. The auditions will take place in PM&L Theatre’s Tribute Hall, located at 877 Main Street in Antioch, IL. There will be callbacks on Wednesday, Oct. 9, if needed.

Actors should be prepared for cold readings from the script. A 1-2 minute monologue or scripture reading is encouraged. Copies of the scenes

With the recent flooding from heavy rains and more rain expected, residents are advised that flood water can contaminate food and drinking water. To avoid getting a waterborne illness, the McHenry County Department of Health (MCDH) recommends that residents affected by flooding visit the Department’s webpage: www.mcdh. info for flood information related to the clean-up of solid waste, water wells and septic. Common water-borne illness symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal cramps. Never allow children to play in flood waters, and seek immediate medical attention if you experience these symptoms after exposure to flood waters. Persons who come in contact with flood water and have open wounds should be sure they’ve had a tetanus shot within the last 10 years. For a tetanus booster contact your health care provider. MCDH also offers tetanus vaccine boosters. Call 815-334-4500 for information.

A private water well which has been submerged must be considered contaminated and unsafe to drink for cooking, drinking, preparing food, baby formula or brushing teeth. Obtain bottled water or bring tap water to a rolling boil for at least 5 minutes before use. The Health Department will perform free testing of flooded private water wells for coliform bacteria after the flood waters have receded and the well has been flushed and disinfected. See the Department’s Frequently Asked Questions “About Water Wells and Flood Clean-Up” for additional information.

To prevent the spread of disease, always wash your hands with warm water and soap before handling, preparing, or eating food. Be sure to disinfect food preparation surfaces that may have been contaminated by flood water. Food or beverage containers should be carefully examined. Flooded, non-permeable surfaces of indoor areas (walls, floors, etc.) must be scrubbed with warm, soapy water. Wash linens and clothing in hot water or dry clean. If there is sewage backup and the drains are connected to the sewer system, then it can be disposed of by pumping it into the toilet or floor drains.

Never pump sewage-contaminated water into the yard or into the street.

Ukena announced that various partners in the Lake County legal community and the County of Lake will again work together with the Library of Congress on its Veterans History Project, being held on the morning of Monday, November 11, 2019 in the Lake County Courthouse.

Veterans are encouraged to register for the opportunity to be interviewed by volunteers and have their oral histories recorded by official court reporters who will produce written verbatim transcripts. The typed transcripts will be archived at the Library of Congress, making accessible the personal accounts of American veterans so that future generations may hear directly from the soldiers.

A copy will also be provided to the veteran.

“As time goes on, more and more war veterans pass and the details of their time of service and that of their comrades is lost. War veterans are often hesitant to talk about their own experiences because of a sense of humility, but their details are crucial to our history and a testament to the sacrifice and bravery of others. The events

they experienced, and their memories need to be preserved so that generations to come will better understand the realities of war,” said Chief Judge Jay W. Ukena.

Veterans who served in the U.S. military, in any capacity, from WWI to the present, regardless of branch or rank, and are no longer serving are eligible. VHP accepts the stories of veterans as defined by the Department of Veterans Affairs: “A person who served in the active military service and who was discharged or released under conditions other than dishonorable.”

Civilian defense workers who were actively involved in supporting war efforts (war industry workers, such as “Rosie the Riveter,” USO workers, civilian flight instructors and pilots, medical personnel, etc.) are also invited to share their valuable stories.

Alzheimer’s took my mom, but she may be back

Last night my mom appeared in one of my dreams.

She passed away nine years ago from Alzheimer’s.

I haven’t been able to think about her, not really, since.

It’s an ugly disease.

I’m weak to say so, but my last memories of her are haunting. I’m only speaking my truth.

Watching someone you love – your mom for goodness sakes – forget who you are, how the world works, which pronouns to use, how to take care of themself is devastating.

When I’d visit, she’d ask (innocently), “Who are you?

Do I know you?”

What do you do in that moment but make light of it and try to be positive, even when it is breaking your heart into a million pieces?

I wasn’t the only one.

She forgot my dad, too. She remembered being married to a much younger man and thought the guy who lived with her needed a place to live. So she let him stay.

“He doesn’t have anywhere else to go,” she said. They’d been married 49 years.
