Organizations collaborate to combat underage drinking

Pumpkin picking, apples, corn mazes and more Autumn activities on the farm

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office and Stand Strong Coalition are proud to announce a new initiative to assist in curbing of parties where underage drinking and drug use is taking place.

Stand Strong Coalition purchased a four-year membership to tip411 where members of the community can anonymously send a message if they have information of a situation where underage drinking or drug use is taking place. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office is taking the lead in monitoring any submitted tips.

When the incident is occurring in the jurisdiction of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, Sheriff’s Deputies will be dispatched to investigate. When the incident is occurring within municipal boundaries, Lake County Sheriff’s Telecommunicators will pass the information along to the proper dispatch center, so the proper local police department can take appropriate action.

Providing alcohol or drugs to underage people is illegal and dangerous. Additionally, parents can be held criminally and civilly liable for allowing their property (or a hotel room, rented limo, bus, boat, or vehicle) to be used for underage consumption of alcohol.

Telephone scam uses Sheriff’s office phone number

Pumpkin picking, apples, corn mazes and more

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a telephone scam being used against the public in which someone posing as a “warrant officer” from the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office attempts to obtain payment over the telephone.

Recently, a victim received a call identified as originating from 815-338-2144 by caller ID. The caller claimed they were from the Sheriff’s Office and told the homeowner that he had a warrant for his arrest for theft. The homeowner stated a third party joined the telephone conversation and demanded payment using a debit or credit card.

The 815-338-2144 number is in fact a number associated with the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, but new technology allows scammers to manipulate systems so they can program what telephone number they want to appear on a caller ID. It is not the practice of Sheriff’s Office employees to contact persons by telephone and ask for payment. If you believe there might be a warrant for your arrest, please contact our Warrant Division at 815334-5124.

This is a scam being perpetrated by very sophisticated criminal organizations and are nearly impossible to track. We encourage the public to not provide any payment over the telephone. If you receive such a call, we suggest you immediately hang-up and notify your local Police Department to report the incident.

Apple picking began Labor Day weekend and pumpkins can be picked from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on weekends. A tractor-pulled wagon will deliver you to the pumpkin patch and pick you up. Each pumpkin is $7 regardless of size.

The farm includes more than 30 different activities with a general admission ticket.

“The pumpkin cannon where employees shoot pumpkins out of a long canon, draws visitors to watch the pumpkins fly high into the air,” said Keri Rohde, a seven-year employee at Stade’s. “We also offer a

corn maze that is enjoyed by many.”

The petting zoo with its goat bridge encourages children to interact with farm animals. Traditional festival rides including a 1926 antique carousel will bring smiles to children’s and some adult faces. A climbing web, tractor tire swings and a zip-line, one for parents and one for children, are among the many activities for the day. Vendors are available on site with food items.

Each Sunday morning during Shades of Autumn, an open-air worship service, with contemporary music and visiting speakers or clergy, is begins the day.

Antioch Harvest Fest Oct. 19

Kick off fall with Antioch Harvest Fest from Noon to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 19.

Downtown businesses will be hosting Treat the Streets from Noon to 2 p.m.

Other activities will be at the William E. Brook Entertainment Center, 900 Skidmore Drive, Antioch.

Bouncy house and games from noon to 3:00; hay rides from noon to 4:00; food and non-alcoholic beverages available from noon to 4:00; wiener races 1:30; pumpkin roll 2:30 and a costume contest at 3:15.

Illinois Regional College fair being hosted by CLC How can high-school students and their parents learn about more than 170 colleges and universities in just one location? Attend the Illinois Regional College Fair, hosted by the College of Lake County from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 10.

Hatchery Park trout Call 211 to get fishing season opens connected to Lake Oct. 19 County resources The 2019 Illinois fall trout fishing season will open on Saturday, Oct. 19 at Hatchery Park.

No trout may be taken from Hatchery Park until the season opens at 5:00 a.m. Oct. 19. Anyone attempting to take trout before the season opening will be issued citations.

A valid fishing license and Inland Trout Stamp are required, except for those under 16, blind or disabled, or an Illinois resident on leave from active duty from the Armed Forces.

Sheriff’s Office investigating fatal motorcycle crash 43-year-old Jesse G. Rodriguez, Harvard, died as a result of a single motorcycle crash that occurred in unincorporated Wonder Lake Wednesday, Sept. 25 at approximately 7:39 p.m.

McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Deputies and Wonder Lake Fire Protection District personnel responded to the scene of a motorcycle crash

He was ejected from the motorcycle and was pronounced deceased on scene. Rodriguez was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

Health Department reports rabid bat with possible human exposure McHenry County Department of Health (MCDH) confirms a rabid bat was recently identified in Harvard. So far in 2019, 48 rabid bats were reported in Illinois, with two reported in McHenry County. Only in cases of possible human or animal exposure are bats tested.

The bat was tested after it was determined to have come in contact with a human. The individual identified as an exposure to the positive bat has started appropriate treatment.

The best way to avoid rabies is to avoid exposure. Rabies is a fatal viral disease that can only be confirmed in a laboratory.

For questions about exposure or to determine the need for treatment, call MCDH’s Communicable Disease Program at 815-334-4500.

Never touch a bat with bare hands. Using a shovel or plastic bag ensures no direct contact.

If a bat is found inside, contain it in a room by closing the door. If you find a bat outside and think there has been exposure to a person or pet, or if the bat is injured, place an upside down bucket over the bat if possible. Call Animal Control immediately (815-459-6222) if you, a family member, or a pet has had direct contact with

a bat. To test bats for rabies, it is important the bat be in good condition with the head intact.

Keeping cats and dogs up to date with vaccinations will not only keep them from getting rabies but also provide a barrier of protection for you if your animal is bitten by a rabid animal. Residents are encouraged to take a “hands off” approach to wild animals to reduce their risk of exposure. Children should also be educated about the dangers. control over high water events, which will help minimize shoreline erosion caused by fluctuating water lines and as a flood hazard reduction from greater control of outflow.

“The Grandwood Park Dam rehabilitation project aligns with LCSMC’s mission to improve water quality, reduce flood damages, and restore and enhance the natural drainage system,” said Mike Warner, LCSMC Executive Director, who oversaw the project.

“We were proud to be a part of it.”

In the Mill Creek watershed plan, LCSMC identified the need for replacement of the old dam based on analysis of the dam structure and embankment, impact of the dam to surrounding residents and the region. That recommendation resulted in the project scoping process and provided the basis for the funding and staff request to complete the project. LCSMC, and a Lake County infrastructure fund award, provided 40 percent ($170,000) of the project cost for the dam renovation.

The construction on the project officially began in Nov. 2018. The new dam configuration includes a concrete-enhanced primary spillway and 80-ft stone armored secondary spillway —which directs overflow to a controlled area—and a new, high-quality wetland area.

The Grandwood Park District, established in 1965, is a municipal governing agency providing parks, recreation facilities and events/programs for its residents. They are located in northern Lake County and can be reached at 847-356-0008.

The Grandwood Park community, the Grandwood Park Park District (GPPD) and the Lake County Stormwater Management Commission (LCSMC) celebrated the grand reopening of the Grandwood Park Lake Dam at a ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday, Sept.

20.

“In 2012, we started having a lot of problems with the dam. We had one flooding event after another, more damage, and increasing issues,” said Nancy Carlson, GPPD President.

The dam was experiencing constant flooding and was in danger of collapse.

Through the Mill Creek Watershed Plan, it was declared a significant safety hazard and steps were immediately taken to rehabilitate it.

Construction officially began in Nov. 2018 through the successful collaboration between Grandwood Park, GPPD, LCSMC and other partners, and cements the safety of the Grandwood Park community. The dam passed its first test with flying colors last week as it handled the recent rains and resulting floodwaters.

“When the project first began, the dam was ready to give way,” said District 7 Lake County Board Member Steve Carlson. “I would like to commend all of our partners who took immediate action to ensure this rehabilitation would take place. We are happy to say that this dam will help prevent flood damage in this community and will maintain the precious wildlife that live this area.”

Summer officially has ended. Sigh. The warm weather morphs into autumn, and for my family that means one thing: closing up the cabin.

I’ll be honest and admit that when we’ve completed the task we’ve definitely reached an hour that’s happy.

At the end of the day, when all the chores are done, we sit on a neighbor’s deck and chat about everything and nothing. Where did summer go? Any vacations planned for the winter months?

The deck is full because no one needs an invitation to socialize. Lake life is unscripted; it happens spontaneously, in the best of ways.

It’s a comfortable camaraderie that comes from being in a place, in a space, that just feels right and good and full and happy. Darkness comes too quickly and it’s time to return to the warmth

and comfort of the cabin.

It’s always bittersweet – saying goodbye to the long, unhurried and carefree days at the lake. I’ve learned over the years that despite June feeling like the beginning of a decade-long summer, the season progresses at breakneck speed and the next 12 weeks unfold faster than a leap year February. Probably faster.

I realize I am lucky.

Although the end of something pleasant can be difficult, I know my family’s time at the cabin is precious and not something everyone can count on. Our time at the lake over the years has been illuminating. Even my kids acknowledge this truth; my husband and I a hundred times over that.

rats. I wouldn’t change that for anything. And now we have another generation – our granddaughter – who is learning to love the lake, or in her words, “wa-wa.”

Which is short for water, for those of you not fluent in toddler-speak.

Fall is here. Winter is coming. We are closing up our lake but counting the days until next spring when we return. Can’t wait to put the boat back into the water.
