Area woman guides figure skater to Winter Olympics

When Twin Lakes resident Denise Myers first put on a pair of ice skates as a youngster living in Oak Creek, she fell in love with the art of figure skating, a sport she has coached for more than 37 years.

Throughout her coaching career, she guided several figure skaters to national and international competitions, but never went to the Olympics until one of her students produced a phenomenal journey in less than a year.

The student, Bradie Tennell, 20, of Carpentersville, Ill., was considered a longshot by national observers to earn a spot on the U.S. Olympic team until early January when she won the U.S. Figure Skating Championship.

The following day, Tennell was named to the Olympic team, and made the trek to Pyeongchang, South Korea alongside Myers last month.

Myers, who has coached Tennell for more than 10 years at Twin Rinks Ice Pavilion in Buffalo Grove, Ill., said the trek to South Korea was worth it.

“Because I have coached Bradie for over 10 years, it was an amazing experience for the both us,” said Myers. “I’m glad we could share this journey together.”

PM&L Theatre to host auditions for ‘The Secret Garden’

Auditions for Tony Award-winning musical “The Secret Garden” will be by appointment at 6:30 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday, with callbacks on Wednesday, March 28, at PM&L Theatre, 877 Main St., Antioch.

“The Secret Garden” is based on the beloved Frances Hodgson Burnett classic book.

Director Rebecca Zellar’s recent directing credits include A Christmas Carol and Songs for a New World.

She is in search of two children to play Mary Lennox and Colin Craven with stage ages 10 to 11, up to 10 actors who identify as male, ages 15 and older and nine actors who identify as female, ages 18 and older.

People who plan to audition should prepare and memorize a 32 bar vocal selection in the style of the musical.

“When I did my first trial lesson with Bradie, I knew she had the spirit and could see she loved skating,” Myers said.

“Bradie liked being challenged, and enjoyed the process of becoming a better athlete.”

The process, however, was arduous after Tennell suffered back injuries, which sidelined her for several months starting in 2015, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Despite the setback, Tennell continued to persevere, and eventually returned to the rink.

“Any athlete at this level has to have fire that burns within,” Myers said. “You need the self-discipline. Bradie has both characteristics.”

The self-discipline parlayed into a rapid progression within just 11 months, making the leap from junior world level competition to the Olympic stage in South Korea, where she exhibited poise in a high-pressure climate.

State’s Attorney to host free victim rights event

In observance of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, Lake County State’s Attorney Michael G. Nerheim has invited county residents to attend a free event called “Creating a More Inclusive Lake County” on Tuesday, April 30 from 1:30 p.m. until 4:30 p.m.

The event, which is held at the Gurnee Holiday Inn, 6161 W. Grand Ave., includes a viewing of the 2016 Oscar-winning short film “Sing” followed by a facilitated discussion and break-out sessions.

The film’s message of inclusion and fighting oppression and injustice will guide the afternoon’s dialogue.

There will be a focus on historically excluded groups, including individuals with disabilities and members of the LGBTQIA community.

County health department issues open burning reminder

The McHenry County Department of Health is reminding residents of a public health ordinance related to open burning of landscape waste.

According to a department news release, the public health ordinance is in effect year round, and residents should check with their local municipalities for additional restrictions.

“Where there is not a ban or more restrictive ordinance, the County Ordinance must be followed,” the release states. “The open burning of landscape waste is limited to weekend days in April, May, October and November from dawn to dusk.”

“We have already worked on some new ideas for the upcoming season, and I know there is much more potential in Bradie to reach even higher levels,” said Myers, who looks to join her in the 2022 Olympic games in Beijing, China.

Myers credits Tennell’s drive to her upbringing and strong support system.

Tennell, who attends McHenry County College, is the daughter of Jean and sister of two brothers, Austin and Shane, both hockey players.

“Bradie loves to read and is a wonderful role model to the skaters at the Twin Rinks,” Myers said.

The stroll brought them to Twin Lakes, where they have found peace and serenity, including the view of lakes Mary and Elizabeth.

“We love the area. It puts us halfway between Milwaukee and Chicago,” she said. “We have room for a garden, and this area brings us so much joy and peace.”

As Illinois celebrates its 200th anniversary as a state, some area communities have contributed to the state’s growth, including the Village of Spring Grove in McHenry County.

While Spring Grove did not receive incorporation until 1902, 84 years after Illinois was welcomed into the union, the community saw early beginnings 60 years before becoming a village.

After Jonathan Imeson became the first settler in 1830, when he made his first home in a shanty, a year later he was joined by English families.

The English families consisting of the Wrays, Lawsons, Richardsons, Hoffmans, Fowles, Manns, Rices, and Blivens still have some descendants in the area.

They were soon followed

by John Sanborn and Alfred and Merrells Stevens. Alfred Stevens was the father of Burton Stevens for whom the township was named.

The presence of the Nippersink Creek, which zigzagged its way through the area, that would become Spring Grove, made it the perfect place for a mill.

By 1841, Spring Grove had two mills, a grist mill owned by Joseph Bliven and a sawmill owned by Lewis Hatch. The area became known as Blivin’s Mills.

In 1847, the Blivin’s Mills Post Office was established and the first store was built.

The name of the community reverted to Spring Grove in 1883 in honor of the large spring and beautiful grove that once surrounded it.

In the ensuing years, Spring Grove emerged as both an agricultural community and business center.

Progressive improvements included a telephone service in 1897 when Walter Carey ran a phone line from

his store in Wilmot to his farm in English Prairie.

By the early 1900s, concrete sidewalks replaced the wooden plank walkways in the downtown area.

Walter Carey, meanwhile, introduced electricity to the community in 1918 using a waterfall on the Fox River to generate power.

The business community continued to grow until the 1920s when automobiles began to be owned by the residents making travel to other communities to shop more accessible. Then many of the businesses closed.

Spring Grove was the home of the first State of Illinois Fish Hatchery. In 1914, with a group of 16 men, Thomas McCaferty built eight concrete ponds in swampy land near Nippersink Creek to be used as a fish hatchery.

The ponds and the buildings constructed became known as the Spring Grove Fish Hatchery and eggs were incubated in the building. Once hatched, they were moved to one of the ponds to continue growing until they were large enough to survive in the open waterways.

Each fall the little fish known as fingerlings, were released into Illinois waterways including rivers, lakes and even Lake Michigan.

By 1967, more than 500,000 fish were produced annually, making it the largest fish hatchery in Illinois.

Winter time was a favorite time for the children of the area. The ponds would freeze and they would bundle up in their winter coats, scarves, hats and gloves, don their ice skates and head for the ponds to spend the day ice skating.

McCaferty was known to leave the door to the hatchery unlocked so that the children could come into the building to warm-up something that was very appreciated by the skaters.

High schools looking into fire drill protocols Evaluations come after Florida shooting

After last month’s shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida, where 17 people were killed, both area high schools are looking into their safety protocols.

The shooting, according to national news outlets, happened when the Florida school was evacuated after accused gunman Nikolas Cruz pulled the fire alarm.

Since then, Kenosha County Sheriff David Beth suggested to Milwaukee news stations that area schools should reassess fire evacuation procedures, including evacuating to a different part of a school building.

While Beth offered suggestions, Wilmot Union High School has worked diligently to better prepare for a threat at the school, according to a letter addressed to parents by Principal Amber Torres.

“Conducting drills for a range of dynamic situations can be a daunting task, but it’s one we must undertake,” the letter stated.

On March 8, the school practiced a new safety drill, which is designed for active shooter situations.

Meanwhile, the school is incorporating the ALICE protocol, an Active Shooter Response Training program.

ALICE is an acronym for alert, lockdown, inform, counter and evacuate and looks to help organizations address aggressive intruder or active shooter threats.

“This will allow us to use the most up-to-date techniques to help keep our students’ safety and well-being our No. 1 priority,” the letter states. “Also, as a direct result of the shooting in Florida, we are now re-examining our fire drill and other emergency drill procedures.”

However, the letter reiterated safety procedures and tools in place, including a full-time, onsite Kenosha County Sheriff’s deputy, security cameras inside and outside the building and secured entrances from 7:35 a.m. until 2:45 p.m.

St. Patrick waves to the crowd during his annual visit to Lake Villa for the St. Patrick’s Day parade at Grand Avenue and Cedar Avenue on March 17. Due to a quirk of the calendar, the parade that always takes place on a Saturday this year was held on Patrick’s actual special day. What the trees, shrubs and grass may have lacked in green was made up for by the large, enthusiastic crowd of parade viewers who enjoyed the marchers under blue skies and temperatures in the lower 40s. Patrick has not lost his touch as an exterminator because no one at the event reported seeing any snakes along the route. A corned beef and cabbage dinner took place at the Lake Villa VFW hall after the event. The parade was held in part to benefit the Lake Villa Township Food Pantry. At Westosha Central, Sheriff’s deputy and school resource officer David Wright said the school implemented the ALICE protocol within the last few years and upgraded the public address system equipped to issue an announcement if a violent intruder enters the building.

“This announcement is triggered using wireless panic buttons that are distributed to every teacher,” Wright said.

Although Westosha Central has safety procedures in place like Wilmot, Central also is reviewing fire drill protocol.

“During the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting, students and staff thought they were having another drill when a fire alarm sounded, requiring them to leave their classroom,” Wright said. “The shooter then opened fire on the students in the hallway of the school.”

To exercise more caution, the school will inform teachers before administrators conduct a fire drill.

If a fire alarm is pulled without prior notification, the school plans to look into having teachers first approach the door, where they can assess the hallway.

“If everything appears to be in order, the teacher would allow the students to leave like a normal drill,” he said.

“I know this may seem over the top, but we live in a world where we need to think about these things.”

Along with reassessing fire drills, both schools have encouraged the See Something, Say Something approach.

“Our students are very well connected to people on social media, even people they aren’t necessarily friends with,” the Wilmot letter states. “We need to tell kids that it is important to tell an adult when they see something that seems off or out of place.”

Students at Wilmot can use an app known as Stop-It, which gives them an opportunity to report suspicious activity anonymously.

Village board OKs fire commission Since the former Silver Lake Village Board assembled the police and fire commission before the consolidation, several board members have had questions.

Village administrator Pat Casey consulted Michael

Best and Associates and discovered that there may have been some irregularities.

The board, which unanimously repealed the previous Silver Lake ordinance, created a new ordinance.

During the meeting, there was discussion of possibly disbanding the police and fire commission after the April Spring Election.

Ed Herreid, a commission member, told the board, “The only reason to disband the commission is for cause and I think that the commission was created legally.”

“You can rename it, but I don’t think you can disband it.”

He made this comment at the end of the board meeting. Village president Diann Tesar said they would hear his comment, but they could not comment on it.

After the meeting, Trustee Dan Campion questioned how the ordinance was created, and Kmiec said the ordinance did not go before the transition committee.

Deanna and Tim Delimat had hopes of opening a fireworks stand and Amish bakery in the Cross Lake Inn building on Antioch Road, but their goal was dashed on March 12, when the Salem Lakes Village Board unanimously denied a conditional use permit at its regular meeting.

The denial comes after the Delimats, who worked with staff and the village board for several months with hopes of receiving a guarantee, had invested several thousands of dollars into the building.

For residents looking for alternatives, the health department offered other options, like mulching, native landscaping, composting, using landscape service companies or dropping landscape waste off at a composting facility.

Municipal solid waste haulers who provide regular residential waste pickup in McHenry County must offer landscape waste collection service. Residents should contact their municipal solid waste haulers with questions about their service, the release states.

If a resident sees an open burning issue, they can contact the department of health or any local law enforcement agency, fire department or fire protection district with a complaint.

“Agencies who respond to open burning concerns are responsible for a variety of issues,” the release states. “All responses are prioritized, and am immediate response is not always possible.”

Residents who plan to burn waste on weekends should perform the activity at least 100feet from a habitual structure, like a home, and 50-feet from a detached garage, shed barn or any other accessory building.

Additionally, if winds exceed 10 mph, burning is not permitted. The same applies to any easements.

While the health department issued reminders of the ordinance, officials recommend supervision of open burning, and safety precautions.

“Adult supervision is required throughout the duration of the burning. A water source or fire extinguisher must be available,” the release states.

The McHenry County Department of Health is reminding residents of a public health ordinance related to open burning of landscape waste.

According to a department news release, the public health ordinance is in effect year round, and residents should check with their local municipalities for additional restrictions.

“Where there is not a ban or more restrictive ordinance, the County Ordinance must be followed,” the release states. “The open burning of landscape waste is limited to weekend days in April, May, October and November from dawn to dusk.”

Village board OKs fire commission Since the former Silver Lake Village Board assembled the police and fire commission before the consolidation, several board members have had questions.

Village administrator Pat Casey consulted Michael

Best and Associates and discovered that there may have been some irregularities.

The board, which unanimously repealed the previous Silver Lake ordinance, created a new ordinance.

During the meeting, there was discussion of possibly disbanding the police and fire commission after the April Spring Election.

Ed Herreid, a commission member, told the board, “The only reason to disband the commission is for cause and I think that the commission was created legally.”

“You can rename it, but I don’t think you can disband it.”

He made this comment at the end of the board meeting. Village president Diann Tesar said they would hear his comment, but they could not comment on it.

After the meeting, Trustee Dan Campion questioned how the ordinance was created, and Kmiec said the ordinance did not go before the transition committee.

Deanna and Tim Delimat had hopes of opening a fireworks stand and Amish bakery in the Cross Lake Inn building on Antioch Road, but their goal was dashed on March 12, when the Salem Lakes Village Board unanimously denied a conditional use permit at its regular meeting.

The Village of Spring Grove Recreation Department’s Easter egg hunt will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 24, at Richmond-Burton High School, 8311 Route 31, Richmond.

There will be over 2,500 eggs with two special eggs per age group and many more eggs that can be redeemed for prizes.

Classes are available on Fridays (April 13 – May 18, 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.) at the Harvard Senior Center or Thursday evenings at St. Mary Catholic Church in Woodstock (April 19 – May 31, 6-8:30 p.m.). Classes in Spanish are offered in Harvard at the Illinois Migrant Council on Wednesdays (April 18-May 23 6:30-9:00 p.m.) or at the Crystal Lake Food Pantry on Wednesdays (April 18 - May 23rd 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.)

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Task Force and the U.S. Marshals Service Great Lake Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested MacKenzie Killian, 18, of McHenry, and Michael Majewski, 28, of McHenry, for unlawful possession of heroin and other drugs on March 9, at the 1200 block of North Green Street, McHenry, according to a McHenry County Sheriff’s Office press release.

According to the release, members of the U.S. Marshals Service Great Lake Regional Fugitive Task Force served arrest warrants for Killian and Majewski at their residence. During the arrest, drug items were observed by the arresting officers. Investigators from the narcotics task force were called and a search warrant was obtained.

Recalling Doctor Brown

During the early 1900’s, many people called the Antioch and Chain O Lakes area home for the summer, and spent their winter months in Chicago.

While most sought peace in the area, other part-time residents were connected with the Chicago crime syndicate, including Dr. W. Spencer Brown.

Brown, who practiced dentistry early in his life, was a Chicago-area business owner and chemist.

Brown, whose Chicago-area shop manufactured rubber products and dental appliances, bought a home in Antioch on 257 Ida St. He also owned a property on Loon Lake, where neighbors noted that the Brown and his wife would only be in town for short periods of time, and return to their home in Chicago.

Before he opened his Chicago business on Wells Street, Brown operated the establishment on Wabash Street until police caught him cooking

nitroglycerine for a group of burglars known for blowing up safes and stealing the contents inside.

The police, who suspected Brown was the mastermind for many years, was also the recipient of the stolen property.

While the police put him out of business at the Wabash Street property, they did not have sufficient evidence to convict him, but continued watch his activities.

As the recipient for stolen jewelry, Brown allegedly would dismantle the items, and melt down the settings.

In 1923, a Chicago police detective said melting down the settings helped conceal evidence.

“At one time he had (pawn) tickets for 18 large diamonds but they could not trace the diamonds to the rightful owners because they had been removed from the settings and had no identifying characteristics,” the detective said.

Although he was watched, Brown still melted gold and turned them into teeth and crowns, covering them with

plaster and later sold.

The Browns’ Chicago apartment, meanwhile, did not fit the mold of a wealthy businessman.

The apartment was in a neighborhood consisting of rooming houses, which had crumbling walls.

Inside the Browns’ home, they possessed a combination of both expensive and cheap items, including rugs imported from China and statues from Persia, which is Iran today.

Additionally, the home had a library, which had reading material by Kipling, Freud and medical books.

Other items included mahogany cabinets and chairs made of teak.

The apartment had two doorways leading to the hallway, and one door entering the living room had six locks, which needed a separate key for each of them.

In contrast, the dining room entrance had just one lock that only needed a hairpin to open, but was equipped with an alarm.

The police, who continued to monitor him, eventually ar-

rested him in connection with the robbery of the Werner brothers.

The robbery, which netted more than $1 million in bonds and jewelry, led police to Brown, who was identified by three people.

On a Saturday in 1923, Brown left his Antioch home and took the 10:45 am train to Chicago and when he realized the police were looking for him, he climbed to the roof of his business building where he was noticed and arrested.

For his crimes, Brown served six years of an eightyear sentence in federal prison for altering war savings stamps, followed by another 20 years at prison in Joliet for his role in the Werner robbery.

When he was released, Brown and his wife returned to their Antioch home, where they maintained quiet lifestyle.

After his wife died of a heart attack in March, 1945, he died of natural causes five months later.

The Browns are buried in Antioch at the Hillside Cemetery.

but don’t yet have some of the responsibilities that will build up over the coming years. They now understand the world of work and probably have come to appreciate the happiness brought on by a promotion and equally so a day off.

Weekends may take on new meaning, and joy.

The act of dating, which started during the teens may develop into marriage and a lifetime partner. This should, in the best-case scenario, increase one’s happiness quotient.

Young adults still experience a sense of immortality; life is an adventure waiting to unfold.

They enjoy roller coasters, fast food and splurging on themselves because they can.

However, happiness also comes from the increased responsibilities that often accompany this time span.

Things like a mortgage, a baby, a dog and that magical mystery known as employer paid health insurance.

Seasoned adults no longer self-actualize over a 30-year mortgage but continue to seek happiness based on their experiences and tenure in life.

Happiness isn’t as easy as a new bike or new puppy, but it isn’t as fleeting as it perhaps has been in the past.

Joy comes from solid life relationships that have been nurtured and developed throughout the years. It comes from knowing what brings happiness and then pursuing that something. It

way, clouds and all.

And that, in and of itself, brings on an overall sense of peace and contentment.

It doesn’t matter what you call it. We all want to be happy. It’s a pretty basic universal truth. What makes us happy, however, is as unique as each of us.

And to complicate matters even further, what makes us happy today may not do the same tomorrow, and vice versa.

Happiness constantly is evolving as time unfolds and our perceptions grow and unfold right along with the seconds on the clock.

When we are babies, happiness is a full belly and an empty diaper. It’s having your dad make a silly face that never fails to make you giggle. It is the magical mystery known as peek-aboo.

As children, happiness might be defined by a new bicycle or a giant cloud of cotton candy. It is camping out in the backyard, ice cream for breakfast, the first day of third grade, living room forts and the magical mystery known as the tooth fairy.

As teens, the quest for happiness continues, albeit without any cotton candy clouds or visits from the tooth fairy. For teens happiness may seem more elusive, life more complicated as the realities of self-awareness and peer pressure kick in.

Still, teens acquire happiness on occasion. It often involves friends, the social scene and dating. It might come from success in sports, academics, school activities or hobbies. Often it takes the form of the magical mystery known as the car keys and a full tank of gas.

Striking different chords

Area folk band to play concert with middle school students

T

he Georgia Rae Family Band, based in Richmond, Ill., will bring its folksy, jazzy sound to Lake Geneva Middle School for an upcoming concert. But band members will not appear onstage alone.

Orchestra students in grades four through eight in Lauren Klement’s classes will join them.

Klement is a teacher and orchestra director at the middle school and Eastview and Star Center elementary schools.

“This is going to be a first,” said Georgia Rae Mussared — known in most circles simply as Georgia Rae. Georgia Rae plays the fiddle and is joined by sisters Kelly Jo, the lead singer, and Quintessa Grace, who plays mandolin and banjo. Their mother, Roni, plays guitar, while Joe Burie plays bass for the band.

The first for Georgia Rae and her band is that they’ve never performed with students at a concert like this.

It is something of a first for the district, too. About four years ago, Klement’s students played with a jazz musician, but never with a band.

The concert will be a culmination of work between Georgia Rae, Klement and her students.

“I started doing workshops first with Lauren’s orchestra,” Georgia Rae said.

That was about two years ago, when one of Klement’s fourth-grade students was taking music lessons from Georgia

Rae. After the student introduced her and Klement, the latter saw the band perform locally and asked if Georgia Rae would like to collaborate and do any workshops.

Georgia Rae said yes.

“I was so stoked,” she said. “I was like, ‘It sounds so fun.’”

Since then, Georgia Rae has been a guest instructor in Klement’s classes at the three schools.

“It’s a one-of-a-kind experience for the students,” Klement said. “We can get stuck in our own ways with music and not do our own thing. How she teaches is different than what we typically learn in the music room.”

Klement said what makes Georgia Rae effective is that she allows students to see what they can do with music outside the music room, and Georgia Rae gives them a glimpse of what hard work can do for them.

“I think it’s really inspiring for them (the students) to see someone who has dedicated so much time to music,” Klement said. “For the students, it’s important for them to see that for music or anything. They can see if you apply yourself to anything, with a little hard work you can be successful.”

Georgia Rae’s success includes seven combined state fiddle championships in Wisconsin, Illinois and Minnesota. She also has won a total of five twin fiddle championships in Minnesota and Colorado.

“At 10 or 11, I decided to go for it,” Georgia Rae said.

Although she would like to be seen as more than just an award-winning musician and as someone who cares about more than just music, she is appreciative of her

successful background.

“I’m glad I had all those opportunities to take these challenges on at these concerts,” Georgia Rae said.

Growing up in her family, Georgia Rae always has been around fiddle music. At 9 years old, she started going to music festivals. Her musical life took off from there, including performing with family members. The Georgia Rae Family Band has brought its sound to concert venues since 2011. That sound is inspired by Americana, contemporary folk and roots, mixed with jazzy swing and flavored with family harmony and youthful energy. The band has four independently released albums, the latest in 2016. Another one is expected this spring.

Georgia Rae also hosts two radio shows, “Kicking Back With G Rae and Jacks” on WHIW 101.3 in Harvard, Ill., and “Women in Rock” on WBSD 98.3 in Burlington.

Broadening teaching experience Working with students was part of Georgia Rae’s desire to expand her musical abilities.

She had been giving kids lessons since age 13, but she wanted to teach with larger groups.

“I wanted to get more experience and see if I wanted to do a bigger orchestra,” Georgia Rae said. “I really do love to teach. It’s really fun getting to do that with a whole group of kids.

“It’s really fun because you get to see kids who are scared to improvise become students who are not afraid to be weird and not afraid

of doing something different. It’s cool to see kids be more fearless.”

The fiddle is a violin, but referring to it as a “fiddle” generally is when it is played in folk tunes and while presenting unique sounds.

“When I first started doing the workshops, I told them (the students) that it’s good to have orchestra as a backbone, but don’t be afraid of going outside the box and don’t be afraid of your instruments and the weird noises they make,” Georgia Rae said. “Don’t be afraid of playing different music on instruments you like.”

Georgia Rae,19, hopes that teaching and performing with the Lake Geneva students is just the beginning. Not only does she want to go to college for music and eventually tour and make albums, but also continuing the workshops is on her mind.

“Yeah, this has been very exciting, so I definitely want to try it with more schools,” Georgia Rae said.

The concert will be at 6 p.m. May 8 at Lake Geneva Middle School, 600 N. Bloomfield Road. Admission is free. Doors open at 5:45 p.m. The band also will hold a separate performance.

“I think everyone should come out to this concert. If they like to see kids play music and play unique music, this is the concert for them,” Georgia Rae said. “I am really pumped and excited for this.”

She will host a clinic for the Lake Geneva Schools orchestra students and the Fiddle Club before the May 8 concert. Students will perform Georgia Rae Family Band pieces with the group at the concert.
