On September 7, 2022, at approximately 6:55 p.m., Lake County Sheriff’s Dep uties responded to Route 60 in the area of Wilson Road, near Volo, for a traffic crash with injuries. Sheriff’s dep uties arrived and initially lo cated a 44-year-old woman of Volo lying in the roadway, on RoutePreliminary60. investigation shows a 2015 Hyundai Ac cent, driven by the Volo wom an, was traveling westbound on Route 60. For an unknown reason, the driver of the Hyundai struck a guard rail on the north side of the roadway. This caused the Hyundai to then enter the eastbound lanes of traffic and strike a 2018 Subaru Outback, driven by a 68-year-old woman of Won der Lake.

Task Force Investigators and Evidence Technicians will process the scene, collect witness statements, interview all of the involved individuals, and collect evidence. As per normal protocol, all of the results will be turned over to the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office for their review and determination.

Following the shooting, Zion Officers attempted life-saving efforts. The man was transported via ambu lance to Vista East Medical Center in Waukegan, where he was subsequently pro nounced deceased. None of the officers were shot during the incident, however, the officer who shot the man was transported to an area hospi tal for evaluation.

The victims have been identified as 79-year-old Ronald Goldberg, and 74-year-old Renee Goldberg, both of Highland Park. On September 8, 2022, autopsies were completed at the Lake County Coroner’s Office. Autopsy result indicate that Mr. and Mrs. Goldberg both died from multiple sharp force injuries.
Police Officers responded and arrived within minutes of the Preliminarycall. investigation shows two Zion Police Offi cers arrived and located the man near a back door of the residence. When officers be gan speaking to him, he pro duced a firearm, turned and faced the officers with the firearm, refused to drop the firearm when ordered, and began firing shots. The of ficers retreated and the man ran approximately one block west with the firearm. A third Zion Police Officer en countered the man and shot him. The man’s firearm was recovered at the scene.
Coroner ’s update: The de ceased has been identified as a 47-year-old George Frank lin of Zion. On September 9, an autopsy was performed at the Lake County Coroner’s Office. Preliminary autop sy results indicate that Mr. Franklin died from multiple gunshot wounds.
