McHenry Outdoor, Bremer Team pair up for exceptional ‘Barbie’ opening night fun

Costume contest, dream-house raffle, Barbie meet-and-greet planned

CONTRIBUTOR

With costume contests, a dream-house raffle and even a Barbie-in-the-flesh meet-and-greet on the agenda, the McHenry Outdoor Theater will be the place to be on July 21.

Visitors arriving early for opening night of the highly anticipated “Barbie” can get in on a veritable festival of doll-dazzlery. It’s all courtesy of The Bremer Team, Keller Williams Success Realty, which has formed a partnership with the Outdoor this summer. Gates will open at the theater — located at Chapel Hill and Lincoln roads, east of McHenry — about 6:30 p.m. The night’s double feature will include “Barbie” first and ’90s classic “Clueless” second.

“I’m very excited about it,” said Dawn Bremer, founder of the McHenry-based real estate team. “I think so many kids are going to love what we have in store.”

Scott Dehn, owner of the landmark theater, said he couldn’t agree more.

“We’re encouraging everyone to dress up,” he said, noting he anticipates a sea of pink in honor of the Margot Robbie-Ryan Gosling film’s motif. “My staff will be dressed up, and we’ll have a costume contest with more than $600 in prizes.”

Those prizes include a carload pass good for the rest of the season, which has been extended this

year into December, as well as gift baskets, Barbies and more. Staff has been directed to find and reward creativity, with a focus on the youngsters in the crowd, although adults who “go all out” may also be recognized, Dehn said.

Fans of all ages may also enjoy the planned Barbie meet-and-greet, Dehn and Bremer said.

“My niece, Emma, is the spitting image of the classic blonde version of Barbie,” Bremer said, adding that the Palatine woman will don her Barbie best to greet members of the crowd between 7 and 9 p.m. Not only that, but a general contractor friend of Bremer’s, Tim Boswell, is crafting a giant, lighted, pink, Mattel®-like box to house her — and for visitor photo-op use.

Those participating in the raffle — which is benefiting Kids in Need of McHenry County — will learn Friday night who wins. The lucky ticket-holder will take home from the theater a custom-built, fully renovated, professionally staged, twoand-a-half-story and approximately 2,850-square-inch Barbie dream house. Raffle tickets are $5 each and are available at tinyurl.com/ DreamHouseRaffle.

Several people are collaborating on boosting both the curb and interior appeal of the dream house before its ownership transfers. The doll house was donated by Elizabeth Pfeifer of The Glad Lamb. Kenny’s Floor Covering Inc. has donated

carpet, Pfeifer is repainting the interior and exterior, and Meghann Carpenter of Dickson Design Studio will professionally stage it, Bremer said.

“The Bremer Team has always joked that one day we’d like to be able to give away a house,” she said. “In a recent brainstorming meeting, we decided why not give away a custom Barbie house? Seriously, how fun is this?”

Links to the raffle ticket purchase portal can be found on The Bremer Team, Keller Williams Success Facebook page as well as on the McHenry Outdoor Theater – Golden Age Cinemas Facebook page.

Weekend admission at the McHenry Outdoor is $14 per adult, or $8 for children ages 3 to 11 as well as for military personnel and seniors ages 60 and up. Children 2 and younger are admitted free. Premier parking (front two rows) is $14 per vehicle. Find other information at goldenagecinemas.com.

Illinois Department of Labor joins Antioch Police investigation into carnival ride accident

The Village of Antioch Police Department has been joined by the Illinois Department of Labor to investigate what may have caused yesterday’s carnival ride accident at the Antioch Chamber of Commerce Taste of Antioch carnival.

At 2:40 p.m. on July 16, Antioch Police and Fire emergency crews were dispatched to the Taste of Summer carnival for a child who fell from the Moby Dick ride. Immediately upon notification of the incident, Antioch Police Chief Guttschow briefed Antioch Mayor Scott Gartner. The mayor then immediately issued an executive order to halt all rides to ensure the safety of the community.

The Illinois Department of Labor (ILDOL), Amusement Ride and Attraction Safety

Division is responsible for the annual inspection and permitting of public rides. According to the ILDOL website, only rides that pass inspection, are insured, and meet applicable safety standards are allowed to operate in Illinois. According to the IDOL, the ride involved in the incident, which was operated by All Around Amusement of Lockport, Illinois, was inspected this year and was issued a permit to operate. The Antioch Police Department secured the ride to ensure no tampering occurred and immediately requested an ILDOL inspector to the scene. The inspector arrived and conducted an initial inspection of the ride. Subsequent to that inspection, the DOL issued a “Stop Order”

Court & crime news

on the Moby Dick ride to prohibit the further operation of this ride until a more comprehensive inspection can be conducted. The ILDOL will conduct what they call a “bolt by bolt” inspection of the ride prior to it being allowed to resume operation elsewhere. The ILDOL will conduct an independent investigation to determine if the incident resulted from mechanical failure, operator error, or a combination thereof. This investigation and release of its findings are expected to take several months

Update on the victim:

The child was seriously injured and was flown from Antioch to Lutheran General in Park Ridge. Because of the extent of his injuries, the child

was then flown last night to Comer Childrens Hospital in Chicago. The child, a 10-yearold boy, suffered multiple facial and jaw fractures and a significant injury to the bones in one leg. According to what the police department has learned, he suffered no life-threatening injuries. On Monday morning, the victim was listed in critical condition, but was is stable and was scheduled to go into surgery at Comer to repair his injuries.

Antioch Police Chief Guttschow says the police department is conducting its own investigation to determine if any criminally reckless or negligent acts may have been contributing factors to what occurred.

“We will be working with the Lake County States Attor-

ney to determine if any criminal charges will be appropriate under these circumstances,” said Guttschow.

Additionally, Mayor Gartner and other representatives from the Village of Antioch were meet Monday afternoon with representatives from the Antioch Chamber of Commerce. The annual Taste of Summer carnival is organized and run exclusively by the Antioch Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber plans and organizes the event, including choosing the carnival ride operator.

“We plan to work with the Chamber of Commerce to identify exactly what led to this horrible accident and what we can do to work together to ensure nothing like this will happen again in our

community,” said Mayor Gartner.

As the investigation continues, the Antioch Police Department asks that anyone who may have witnessed unsafe actions by carnival workers or equipment during the Taste of Summer email Antioch Police Detectives at: crime@antioch.il.gov.

Additionally, Chief Guttschow reminds anyone who attends a local community carnival and witnesses what could be unsafe operations or other unsafe conditions to contact the local authorities immediately.

A GoFundMe page has been set up by family members of the victim to assist with medical costs. Donations can be made at: https://gofund.me/0de6a456.

Illegal charter boat operator cited on Chain O’ Lakes

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office reminds those enjoying the Chain O’Lakes and other Lake County Waterways to be cognizant when hiring charter boat operators to drive you, your family, or your friends around the waterways.

Recently, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit cited Clayton Star, 25, of Geneva, for operating a charter boat for hire without having proper licensing. On June 23, Sheriff’s Marine Unit Deputies discovered Star was transporting a group of people around the Chain O’Lakes for two hours, for a cost of $500.00. Star did not possess a captain’s license as required by federal regulation. It was also determined Star did not have the required boating safety equipment onboard his boat. Marine Unit Deputies discovered Star has likely been soliciting fares at local businesses located at the Chain O’ Lakes.

Those operating for hire without the proper licensing and equipment put their customers at great risk. Prior to hiring a charter boat, ensure the operator possesses an Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels (OUPV) license, also referred to as a ‘six-pack license’ or Charter Boat Captain’s License. Possessing this document shows the operator has received the necessary training to safely operate a boat while carrying passengers for hire. If the operator refuses to show this documentation, be very wary.

Star was subsequently cited for: Operating a Watercraft for Hire Without a License, Operating a Watercraft Without Proper Equipment, Failure to Pay License Fees, Failure to Display a License, and Other Boating Violations.

Star was due in court on July 17, in Round Lake Beach Branch Court.

Sheriff John D. Idleburg added, “As we all know, the water can be a very dangerous place, which is why it is very important those soliciting business on the waterways have the required training, experience, and licensing. It is incredibly reckless to be soliciting boating fares without the proper licensing or boating equipment.”

Sheriff’s Office investigating man’s death from self inflicted wound

On July 17, at approximately 2:00 a.m., Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the 1800 block of North Sheridan Road, Waukegan, for a critically injured person who sustained the injury at a bar in the 37800 block of North Sheridan Road, Beach Park.

Sheriff’s deputies arrived and found a 32-year-old man of Chicago with a major arm wound. The man was transported to an area hospital where he was subsequently pronounced deceased.

Preliminary investigation shows the man was at the bar on Sheridan Road and got into a verbal altercation with another person. The man was escorted out of the bar by security. After being escorted outside, the man punched his fist through a window near the front door. This caused to sustain a severe laceration to his arm and bleed significantly.

The man asked a friend who was at the bar to drive him to the hospital. While on the way to the hospital, the man went in and out of consciousness. After regaining

consciousness at one point, the man grabbed the wheel of the car, causing the driver to strike a curb and a trashcan, which disabled the car’s ability to drive.

Lake County Sheriff’s Detectives continue to investigate, however, the injury the man sustained appears to be self-inflicted. The Lake County Coroner’s Office is conducting the autopsy.

Sheriff’s Detectives looking for community assistance in homicide investigation

Wadsworth Homicide Investigation (issued: 7/1/23)

Lake County Sheriff’s Detectives are investigating the homicide of a 19-yearold Waukegan man who was shot to death overnight.

On July 1, at approximately 1:45 a.m., Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to the 40600 block of North Kilbourne Road, Wadsworth, for a report of shots fired. Sheriff’s deputies arrived and determined a 19-year-old was shot multiple times. He was transported to an area hospital where he was subsequently pronounced deceased.

Preliminary investigation shows there was a large party occurring at the Kilbourne Road residence. There was a disagreement that occurred involving the victim and the offender. The offender produced a firearm and shot the victim several times. Dozens of people left the party after the shooting and before the arrival of deputies.

The Lake County Major Crime Task Force is assisting with the investigation.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office is scheduling an autopsy.

Nobody is in custody at this time and the investigation remains active and ongoing.

Anyone with informa-

tion is asked to call the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division at 847-377-4000 or contact Lake County CrimeStoppers at: http:// www.lakecountycrimestoppers.org/

Illinois hotels report record revenues for fiscal year 2023

For hoteliers, business is booming in Illinois.

Last week, Gov. JB Pritzker, the state’s legislative leadership and representatives of the hospitality industry announced that hotels in Illinois saw record revenues in fiscal year 2023, which ended June 30.

Across the state, hotels brought in $307.8 million, according to figures from the state’s Department of Revenue. That beats fiscal year 2019, the previous record year for hotel income and the last year before the pandemic upended the hospitality industry.

Revenue in 2023 was up 35.8 percent from the prior year and 230.1 percent from fiscal year 2021, when the pandemic was still significantly affecting peoples’ travel habits.

“Tourism means more jobs for hotel and hospitality and recreation workers—good

paying jobs with health insurance,” Pritzker said at a news conference in Chicago. “More tourism means millions of new visitors exploring all the amazing things that our state and city have to offer.”

Major events have helped bolster Illinois’ tourism industry in 2023, according to Kristin Richards, the head of the state’s Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. These include the sold out Enjoy Illinois 300 NASCAR race in Madison and Taylor Swift’s Eras tour.

Swift’s fans, who descended on Chicago’s Soldier Field for three nights over the first weekend in June, contributed to Chicago seeing the highest weekend hotel occupancy rate in history—an average of 96.8 percent, according to reporting from Bloomberg.

But hotel revenues are only one way to measure tourism’s impact. Other metrics have yet to match 2019’s records.

The state’s tourism office partners with analytics firm Tourism Economics to research visitors’ impact on the state’s economy. The agency reported to the state in June that Illinois saw 111.3 million visitors who spent $44.3 billion in calendar year 2022. Calendar year 2019, the highest year on record for both measures, saw 122.8 million visitors who spent a combined $45.5 billion.

The hotel industry as well has not fully recovered from the pandemic’s tourism industry interruptions.

Michael Jacobson, president of the Illinois Hotel and Lodging Association, said that while revenues have returned, staffing levels and occupancy rates overall have not yet reached pre-pandemic levels, although they were trending toward recovery.

“We look forward to returning to our place as one of the most significant economic engines, employers and taxpayers

in the state,” Jacobson said on Monday.

The state has made some significant investments in tourism in the past few years, including the $30.3 million “Middle of Everything” ad campaign. The campaign, which launched in the spring of 2022, stars television actress and Illinois native Jane Lynch.

The campaign’s first year brought in an additional 2 million visitors and generated $1 billion in Illinois hotels, restaurants, small businesses, and attractions, according to the state’s tourism office. The campaign recently launched a new set of TV ads this summer that feature the television star.

“Being able to share my passion for all things Illinois comes naturally, and getting to meet and work with so many inspiring people and unique businesses across the state is an honor,” Lynch said in a news release.

Turkson recognized as ‘Top Cop’ in Lake County DUI arrests

Lake County Sheriff’s Deputy Michael Turkson recorded the highest number of DUI arrests in Lake County in 2022.

The Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists (AAIM) recently released their yearly comprehensive statistics on DUI arrests, which shows Deputy Turkson recorded 55 last year, which is higher than

any other deputy or police officer in Lake County, on the list.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office frequently partners with the Illinois Department of Transportation

and other law enforcement agencies to run awareness and enforcement campaigns to keep our roadways safe. In addition to their other significant responsibilities, sheriffs’ deputies place a high emphasis on arresting drunk and high drivers.

Sheriff John D. Idleburg said, “Deputy Turkson and his colleagues do a terrific

HELP WANTED

job identifying and arresting drivers who are drunk or driving high. The members of our staff understand the risks drunk and high drivers place on everyone else.”

Congratulations to Deputy Turkson and Deputies Ascencio, Skrypek, Eng, Nirva and Sergeant Struck who were also named as ‘AAIM’s Top Cops.’

Lake County State’s Attorney welcomes new GVPI director

On July 11, the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office announced Tierra Lemon will serve as the new Gun Violence Prevention Initiative (GVPI) Director. Lake County State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart introduced her to the Lake County Board during the July 2023 Board meeting.

As the GVPI Director, Ms. Lemon is responsible for coordinating all efforts between community groups and law enforcement to prevent gun violence by addressing trauma, lack of services, and other root causes. Ms. Lemon will not only lead the State’s Attorney’s Office’s day-to-day prevention efforts but will also develop long-term safety strategies by enhancing victim support, building data infrastructure, and securing additional private and government funding.

“As the GVPI Director, I am most excited to be part of developing a program that emphasizes collaboration throughout the community to build the necessary preventative measures. By working together, we can reduce gun violence and make Lake County a safer place for all community members,” Ms. Lemon said.

Ms. Lemon says one of her goals as the GVPI Director is to become familiar with statistical prevalence of gun violence to better understand trends in Lake County and to allocate resources to under-served areas of the county. She also plans to collaborate many community-based organizations that have the same mission as the GVPI.

“Tierra will be an amazing leader who will bring a comprehensive approach to ending gun violence. We have neglected the long-term causes of violence for too long. We should have developed a strategic plan many years ago to prevent violence. I am so proud of our county board for funding this proposal we first made in 2021. Our state and federal legislators have assisted us in allocating even more funds for this critical work,” State’s Attorney Rinehart said after the board meeting today.

Tierra Lemon is a Licensed Master Level Social Worker who earned her degree at Columbia College in New York. She was most recently part of The University of Chicago’s Violence Recovery Program and worked as a Victim Recovery Specialist. In addition, Ms. Lemon has years of experience advocating for and working with those who have been impacted by violence and the criminal justice system.

In 2021, Ms. Lemon founded and serves as the chair of The Therapeutic Trap, Inc., a non-profit aimed to create a safe space for adolescents and young adults who have experienced traumatic events by using creativity as a healing technique.

The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office is excited about having someone who is as passionate and experienced as Ms. Lemon as the GVPI Director.
