Local resident launching a third career through CLC apprenticeship program 28-year-old Ingleside native Olivia Peterson is no stranger to higher education, nor starting a new career. After graduating high school, she pursued a bachelor’s, and then a master’s, in music with the goal of becoming a professional classical musician. It’s a world she’s been a part of most of her life, even participating in the College of Lake County (CLC) Wind Ensemble when she was about 12 years old. However, preparing for the career, and actually taking part in it, ended up being two very different things.

“Once I got out into the real world, I was having a little trouble finding work and I ended up working in a library to make ends meet,” said Peterson who turned the job into a true second career which included more education. “I got a master’s degree in library science and found myself in the same situation where the prospects weren’t really great.”

Here she was, a woman in her mid-twenties with two master’s degrees and a future which remained unclear.

Then COVID-19 settled into society and her librarian job turned virtual, further compelling her to find her next, and hopefully more permanent, career.

“I read a story about a woman who, like me, was educated in a different field but really wanted to make an impact for women. She decided to start a new career

as a mechanic, opened her own shop and she employs all female mechanics,” said Peterson (right). “I was so inspired. I knew that CLC had an automotive program. Then I got the college’s mailer and when I flipped it open, serendipitously right there was a picture of a young woman buffing a classic car and it said come join one of our apprenticeship programs. I was sold.”

Peterson enrolled in one of the first classes of CLC apprentices and began her studies in collision repair under the program’s “learn and earn” model. After eight weeks learning in the college’s auto shop, she was interviewed and then hired by an employer partner, Gerber Collision & Glass in Crystal Lake, to begin the earning portion of the program.

“The first day she was sanding down a bumper and getting it ready for painting and I was blown away,” said Gerber Collision & Glass manager Steve Kispetik.

“When she started here, she had only finished eight weeks at CLC, so I was pretty impressed by how much she’s already learned.”

While CLC’s program is new for Kispetik’s shop, the apprenticeship idea is not.

His company began their own version, called the Technician Development Program, two years prior and has already seen the success it can bring.

“We need to make sure we’re training people now and getting people ready to come into this field because we have people leaving and retiring. The need is there,” said Kispetik. “The average body man in a shop right now is 56 years old. It seems, compared to 20 years ago, there aren’t a lot of people that even know about this career and its opportunities.”

Black Caucus introduces sweeping police legislation, faces opposition from law enforcement Massive bill ends qualified immunity, collective bargaining for unions and eliminates cash bail

The Illinois Legislative Black Caucus has introduced a sweeping criminal justice omnibus bill that aims to heavily alter the state of policing in Illinois.

Sen. Elgie Sims, D-Chicago, introduced a 611-page amendment to House Bill 163 Jan. 5 in the state Senate, a move that would allow the bill to move during the General Assembly’s lame duck session scheduled from Jan. 8 to Jan. 13.

While the bill has been introduced on short notice, it is the result of over 100 hours of hearings held by the Black Caucus over fall and winter months as part of their legislative agenda “to end systemic racism in Illinois.” Criminal justice reform and police accountability made up the first of four pillars in that agenda.

The bill has seen intense pushback from Republican lawmakers and groups representing law enforcement.

The Illinois Fraternal Order of Police called it “the worst thing to happen to our profession” and “the end of the law enforcement profession as we know it” in a statement released Jan. 5.

In a Jan. 6 notice, the Chicago Fraternal Order of Police wrote “it might as well be a crime to be a law enforcement officer in Illinois.”

State Rep. David Allen Welter, R-Morris, and state Sen. John Curran, R-Lemont, both released statements opposing HB163, with Welter calling it anti-police.

In response, the Senate Black Caucus distributed their own release Jan. 6, saying “From our perspective, our communities know what they need in order to be kept safe. We come from the communities we represent.

Our experiences, combined with our understanding of policy, have shaped our legislative approach, and they cannot be dismissed when it comes to determining what our communities need.”

The legislation has also received support from criminal justice reform groups such as the Illinois Justice Project and the Building a Safe Illinois Coalition.

HB163 contains several articles that would stand as their own new laws while also amending key components of state law already on the books. While most of the legislation pertains to law enforcement, there are sections devoted to altering other aspects of the criminal justice system, such as pre-trial detention, sentencing laws and prison diversion.

Here’s a look at what’s in the bill:

Use of force A number of provisions within HB163 alter use of force guidelines for officers, something that is usually a mix of state law, municipal ordinance and departmental procedure.

Many of the changes come in response to the death of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor at the hands of police and other high-profile cases that resulted in massive protests across the country over the summer.

Many restrictions to use-offorce in the bill reflect testimonies from hearings held in the fall regarding how officers used force in response to those protests.

Article 3 of HB163, referred to in the legislation as the “Statewide Use of Force Standardization Act,” establishes guidelines for use of force that all law enforcement agencies in Illinois would be required to follow starting Jan. 1, 2022.

Law enforcement must identify themselves as peace officers and warn that deadly force will be used before use of force. Officers are not allowed to use force on a fleeing suspect unless that person has just harmed or tried to harm another person, is in possession of a deadly weapon, is considered an active threat to human life or is unable to be apprehended safely at another date.

Officers cannot use deadly force against someone who is considered a threat to themselves and not others, or someone who is committing a property crime, unless the crime is terrorism or in conjunction with another crime where deadly force is authorized.

In general terms, HB163 mandates peace officers “use deadly force only when reasonably necessary in defense of human life.” It establishes that the legal authority to use physical force “is a serious responsibility” that should be used by officers “with respect for human rights and dignity and for the sanctity of every human life.”

The bill would also amend the acceptable forms of force, banning chokeholds and any restraints on an individual above their shoulders that can potentially limit their ability to breathe.

Officers may not use force as punishment or retaliation, cannot use non-lethal projectiles to target a person’s head, groin or back or fire them indiscriminately into a crowd. Officers are also prevented from using tear gas or pepper spray without first issuing a warning and allowing “sufficient time and space” to follow the order.

HB163 will require offi-

cers to render medical aid to an injured person, regardless of whether or not they were hurt by an officer’s use of force or other means. It also requires officers to prevent another officer’s illegal use of force in their presence regardless of the chain of command and requires that they report the offending officer, with provisions that make it an offense to retaliate against any officer who files a report.

The bill also requires that any time a person dies in police custody or as a result of an officer’s use of force, the associated law enforcement agency must investigate and file a complete report in writing to the Illinois Attorney General within 30 days.

The AG is then required to make these reports publicly available on their website and issue an annual report on information and trends in use-of-force and in-custody deaths.

Qualified immunity Article 5 of HB163, referred to as the “Police Integrity and Accountability Act,” makes police officers individually liable for lawsuits if they violate the rights of a person guaranteed under the Illinois Constitution.

The law explicitly states that qualified immunity is not a defense to liability.

Qualified immunity is not a law or statute, but a legal doctrine established by the U.S. Supreme Court which grants government officials immunity from civil suits in the course of their duties.

It’s most often used in cases of alleged police misconduct or brutality and in some cases shields officers who have been found to have violated an individual’s constitutional rights from being sued by that person.

The Police Integrity and Accountability Act would remove that protection under Illinois law for acts that violate rights granted in the Illinois Constitution.

The Illinois Constitution’s Bill of Rights contains 24 sections and additional guaranteed constitutional rights that are not present in the U.S. Constitution. The Act would open Illinois officers to more civil suits than officers of other states and would strip Illinois officers of qualified immunity in federal courts if a constitutional right they violated under federal law is also a protected right under the Illinois Constitution.

Collective bargaining HB163 would institute changes to the Illinois Public Labor Relations Act regard-

ing the collective bargaining powers of unions, specifically unions for law enforcement.

Under the new changes, employers, which would refer to municipal governments at the county or city level, would not be required to negotiate with unions regarding the discipline or discharge of law enforcement.

Existing contracts between law enforcement unions and cities that include provisions regarding discipline and termination will have those sections voided when those contracts are extended or renegotiated.

No agreement that applies to police officers, including the Illinois State Police, can include a provision unrelated to wages or benefits.

Pretrial detention HB 163 will eliminate cash bail as a requirement for pretrial release. These sections of the bill draw from legislation previously introduced by Chicago Democrats Sen. Robert Peters and Rep. Justin Slaughter called the Pretrial Fairness Act. The section of HB163 known as the “Quasi-criminal and Misdemeanor Pretrial Release Act” would eliminate cash bail requirements for people charged with criminal offenses and misdemeanors and replace it with a uniform set of pretrial release conditions established by the Illinois Supreme Court.

All mentions of cash bail will be struck from Illinois statutes and replaced with pretrial release conditions.

Proponents of eliminating cash bail have long argued it targets poor residents, especially those that are Black or Latino, and that the act of cash bail has contributed to the mass incarceration of these groups for otherwise minor crimes.

Other additions Outside of what has already been mentioned, the bill includes changes to how the census is conducted in Illinois regarding prisoner populations, state recordkeeping laws, sentencing guidelines and more.

Several unfunded mandates that require dozens of hours of additional training for officers and mandatory body cameras for all departments are also included in the legislation.

The General Assembly had six days to debate and vote on HB163 during the lame duck session from Jan. 8-13 before the 102nd General Assembly with new leadership and new legislators is inaugurated.

With an addition of another Household Chemical Waste Event, there are two opportunities still left in January. Saturday, Jan. 23 and 30 are the two dates left for the month.

Appointments will be needed for both of the events.

The routine weekday events, typically held on the fourth Monday of each

month, is canceled until further notice. This safety precaution will help in minimizing potential exposure risks to SWALCO office staff due to the increase presence of outside contractor personnel in the facility that are required for those events.

Over 175,000 registered for COVID-19 vaccination in Lake County There has been incredible interest expressed in receiving the COVID-19 vaccine from those who live and work in Lake County. The Lake County AllVax Portal has now exceeded 175,000 registrants, or the equivalence of 25% of Lake County’s population.

“Registering in AllVax is more important now than ever before,” said Jefferson McMillan-Wilhoit, Director of Health Informatics and Technology at the Health Department. “This portal is designed to shield the public from road bumps on the road to vaccination, but in order to be effective we need everyone to register.”

Anyone who lives or works in Lake County can register on the AllVax Portal. Registering is free, easy, and secure—just visit AllVax.lakecohealth.org. If you are unable to register on-line, you can also register over the phone by calling the Lake County Health Department at (847) 377-8130. Once you are registered, you can also schedule your vaccination appointments for Lake County Health Department facilities using the system when a vaccine is available to you. After you are registered, you will be notified when you are eligible to make an appointment.

Currently, the Lake County Health Department is in Phase 1a of vaccinations. Following guidelines from the Center for Disease Control (CDC), this includes healthcare personnel and long-term care facility residents. Ice Fishing When conditions allow, ice fishing is available at Banana Lake at Lakewood, Sterling Lake at Van Patten Woods, Hastings Lake in Lake Villa, Lake Carina in Gurnee, and the south bay at Independence Grove. Ice fishing is free and at your own risk. Ice conditions are not monitored so anglers should check ice thickness before going out on any frozen body of water. A minimum of 4 inches of solid ice over the entire water body is recommended before individuals attempt ice fishing.

Bring your own gear. Temporary shanties and shelters are permitted but must be removed by the end of the day.

Only two poles are allowed, or tip-ups with no more than two hooks on each line.

Holes must be drilled six

inches or smaller in diameter. All other fishing regulations apply.

Van Patten Woods is open weekdays from 6:30 am until one hour past sunset for ice fishing, and on Saturdays and Sundays from 6:30 am to sunset. Other sites are open daily from 6:30 am to sunset for ice fishing. All state of Illinois fishing regulations and licenses apply.

Bipartisan Illinois politicians condemn rioters, Trump Pritzker calls for Congress to remove president immediately

Hours after rioters seeking to block the certification of President-elect Joe Biden’s November election victory first began storming the U.S. Capitol Jan. 6, Gov. JB Pritzker called on Congress to impeach and remove sitting President Donald Trump.

The Associated Press reported one woman was shot and killed at the Capitol Jan.6., and members of Congress were sent fleeing as angry Trump supporters stormed the floor of the U.S. House and Senate.

U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Channahon, called the scene a “coup attempt.”

“The current president incited this coup and encouraged it and did little to protect the Capitol and the Constitution,” Kinzinger said in a video posted on his Twitter account. “He is no longer the leader of our party. Our party must reject these treasonous

acts.”

Pritzker, in a statement, said, “Two weeks is too long for Donald Trump to remain in office, where he can continue to incite more untold violence.”

“Because of these events incited by the President, I had to ask the Illinois State Police and other law enforcement resources, engaged in important life-saving missions, to redeploy to heighten their presence at government buildings and the Capitol in Springfield,” Pritzker added.

A small group of 75 to 100 protestors demonstrated peaceably Jan. 6 outside of the Illinois State Capitol, a far cry from the events in Washington, D.C. “As the heart of our democracy was under siege and blood was literally being spilled in our most sacred halls, Donald Trump was praising the attackers. There are real questions about what efforts the president made to

protect our Congress or what obstructions he committed that has prevented the ending of the siege,” Pritzker said in the statement.

Trump, in a video statement released Jan. 6, urged the rioters to go home while still maintaining the election was “stolen” by Democrats.

Trump has filed several lawsuits alleging voter fraud, repeatedly being rejected by judges for lack of evidence.

Trump also praised the rioters in the video statement, calling them “very special” and telling them he loved them.

On Twitter, the social media platform began removing some of the president’s tweets after he criticized Vice President Mike Pence for not being more proactive in blocking the results of the November election. Twitter placed a 12hour block on his account the evening of Jan. 6, noting it would continue until certain tweets deemed a threat to pub-

lic safety were removed.

Several Republican members of Congress planned to object to Biden’s certification Jan. 6 before it was waylaid by the rioters.

However, Congress certified the Electoral College votes for President-elect Joe Biden early morning on Jan. 7. Trump said there will be an orderly transition of power on Jan. 20.

“There is no doubt in my mind that his efforts to encourage a coup represent high treason to this democracy, our Constitution and all Americans,” Pritzker said in his statement. “He poses a danger to our nation. He must be impeached and removed from office immediately. And every person in a position of public trust, elected or otherwise, who enabled the systematic dismantling of our democratic norms and failed to speak up or take action bears some responsibility for the culmina-

tion of four years of spreading bile.”

Legislative Republicans in the state also rebuked the events in Washington.

“The events unfolding at the United States Capitol, and the inflammatory remarks by members of the Republican Party, are a disgrace to the core values and beliefs of our great nation,” House Republican Leader Jim Durkin, R-Western Springs, said in a statement. “These actions do not represent our Republican Party, and are against everything we stand for as Americans. I am sickened and deeply saddened by what I have witnessed today. Any public officials who condone these actions have no place in the Republican party or in our democracy.”

Dan McConchie, Senate minority leader designate, also issued a statement.

“The horrible violence at our nation’s capitol is a disgrace to all Americans,” Mc-

Conchie said. “This violence does not reflect the United States that generations of Americans have fought so hard to build. I stand with members of all parties in condemning these un-American acts of violence and treachery, and will do my part here in Illinois to repair the devastating divide that has been created in our country.”

Senate President Don Harmon, D-Oak Park, and House Speaker Michael Madigan, D-Chicago, also issued statements condemning the rioters.

“The peaceful transition of power is a hallmark of our great democracy,” Harmon said. “To disrupt that transition is an affront to the very fabric of the United States of America. The U.S. Capitol has stood strong in the face of attacks by confederates and terrorists. We will survive today’s sad acts to once again be a beacon of hope, change and equality for the world.”

Auxiliary Deputy Brasuell presented ‘Purple Heart Award’ On January 9, 2021, Sheriff John D. Idleburg presented Auxiliary Deputy Thomas Brasuell with the Lake County Sheriff’s Purple Heart Award. Sheriff Idleburg surprised Auxiliary Deputy Brasuell with the award at his residence with members of the sheriff’s office and sheriff’s auxiliary deputy unit.

The Purple Heart Award is reserved for members of the sheriff’s office who are severely injured in the in the line of duty.

On December 23, 2019, Auxiliary Deputy Brasuell was at the scene of a fatal traffic crash in Volo. Brasuell was blocking the scene and directing traffic away, so sheriff’s crash investigators could conduct the fatal crash investigation. While directing traffic, a drunk driver drove his car into Auxiliary Deputy Brasuell, severely injuring him.

It took months for Auxiliary Deputy Brasuell to recover from the significant injuries he sustained in the crash.

Sheriff Idleburg said, “I am proud to present Auxiliary Deputy Brasuell the Purple Heart Award, and while he was severely injured, we are thankful he was not killed by the reckless intoxicated driver who struck him. Our staff report for duty ready to serve the community every day knowing the risks and dangers they potentially face. I am honored to serve alongside such a dedicated group who are deeply devoted to the Lake County community.”

Local organizations partner to form Career Pathways Committee The Rotary Club of Antioch is collaborating with Antioch and Lakes High Schools (D117) to host a Virtual Vocational Pathways Discussion Panel via Zoom.

The Panel is made up of Local Fire Departments, Police Departments, EMS Educators, Lake County High Schools Technology Campus advisors, College of Lake County advisors, District 117 Staff and Rotary members.

The purpose of the Panel is to answer questions from interested students and parents on

how to create a pathway into the fields of Fire, EMS and Police careers. Information on scholarship opportunities will also be provided.

There is a link included to allow families participate in the discussion and ask questions from the comfort and safety of their homes on each topic. January 20 will be the first of monthly panel discussions attempting to create career pathways for students into the Vocational Trades.

Corrections Chief Sitkie to retire after 29 years

Republicans in the Illinois House said Jan. 5 that they hope to use legislation, instead of a constitutional amendment, to change the way state legislative and congressional district lines are redrawn every 10 years.

The so-called “fair maps” proposal would authorize the General Assembly to set up an independent, nonpartisan commission to redraw the lines, taking that highly political process out of the hands of legislators who currently are able to use that process to protect themselves politically, a process known as “gerrymandering.”

Redistricting is a process that all states go through following each decennial federal census and one that Illinois must complete in the upcoming session so that districts can be established in time for candidates to file for office in time for the 2022 elections.

Rep. Tim Butler, R-Springfield, said the measure is similar to the proposed constitutional amendment that supporters tried to put on the ballot in 2016 before being blocked by a sharply divided Illinois Supreme Court. The main difference is that it would put the process into statute instead of the constitution.

“This is a great way to do it through statute to make sure that we have an independent commission that draws our maps this year, gets it out of the hands of the leadership of the General Assembly and puts it in the hands of a commission of citizens to draw fair and equitable maps across the state of Illinois,” Butler said during a virtual news conference.

In 2016, supporters of such a change circulated petitions to put a constitutional amendment on that year’s general election ballot. That’s one of three ways the current Illinois Constitution allows amendments to be considered. The others are by a constitutional convention or by a resolution approved by a three-fifths majority in both the House and Senate.

However, the constitution also limits the scope of citizen-initiated amendments to “to structural and procedural subjects contained in Article IV,” which pertains to the General Assembly.

In a 4-3 ruling, the Supreme Court blocked the proposal from going onto the ballot because the proposed amendment contained elements that also dealt with the attorney general and the auditor general.

The legal challenge to the amendment was brought by several individuals led by John Hooker, a former Commonwealth Edison lobbyist who is now under indictment for allegedly taking part in a bribery scheme aimed at buying the favor of House Speaker Michael Madigan.

Former Justice Thomas Kilbride, who lost his bid for retention in November, wrote the majority opinion in that case, and that was a factor in the GOP-led campaign to remove him from the court.

“And that decision really still burns me to this day,” said Rep. Ryan Spain, R-Peoria, who was among the nearly 600,000 people who signed a petition to put that amendment on the ballot.

“So something has to change,” Spain added. “And since the Supreme Court decision many years ago, I have repeatedly supported and been either the sponsor or the chief cosponsor of a number of different initiatives to change the way we approach redistricting in the state of Illinois.”

Rep. Jackie Haas, R-Bourbonnais, said her district is an example of how gerrymandering can be unfair to certain communities. She said her 79th House District excludes three-quarters of the small town of Momence, whose 2010 population was 3,171, and includes only three streets in the village of Beecher, which has about 4,500 residents.

“These moves were not based on township, village, or meaningful divisions, but on pure partisan maneuvers to advantage (House Speaker Michael) Madigan, to keep his majority in his power,” Haas said.

Butler filed the bill, House Bill 5873, Jan. 5. That made it eligible for consideration in the lame duck session, which began Jan. 8.

Michael Clesceri to step in as chief

Sheriff Bill Prim has announced that Michael Clesceri will be the next McHenry County Sheriff’s Office corrections chief after the recent retirement announcement of Chief Daniel Sitkie.

Clesceri brings over 30 years of experience and leadership in law enforcement to his new role. Clesceri is a 21st Century Community Policing leader who excels at efficiently guiding and managing, strategic operations and organizations.

For the last 11 years, Clesceri served as the chief of police at McHenry County College. He started his career as a police officer, quickly being promoted to sergeant and

investigations commander.

Clesceri rose to the rank of assistant chief of investigations, supervising 240 investigators, managing all criminal and administrative investigations units in the County of Orange DA, Santa Ana, Calif.

Clesceri is also a graduate of Concord Law School of Purdue with an Executive Juris Doctorate of Law, Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command and has earned numerous certifications including: Crisis Leadership from Harvard Kennedy School, FBI Command, and FEMA Emergency Management. Clesceri has also served as a McHenry County

Sheriff’s Office Regional SWAT team member the past four years.

Sitkie is retiring in January after 29 years of service in the Corrections Division, most recently serving as chief for the past two years.

“We are grateful for Chief Daniel Sitkie’s service and leadership as Corrections Chief. We wish Chief Sitkie a well-deserved, enjoyable retirement,” said Sheriff Bill Prim.

“Chief Clesceri will be a valuable addition to a dedicated Corrections Administration,” Sheriff Prim added.

Sitkie began leading the transition process starting at the end of December and will guide Clesceri until his retirement on Jan. 11.

Quilt raffle postponed, tickets available The new quilt for the 2020 raffle is a bow-tie pattern made from 1930s pastel prints. Some of the fabric prints have recognizable figures in them. They are called object or conversation prints. These were used as early as the mid-1880s.Often the early prints were of a patriotic or nautical subject, or a nature theme.

The popularity of conversation prints spread as a new printing process made it economical to print small designs on fabrics. These prints remain popular and now include Disney characters and popular game or movie heroes.

The Heritage Quilters’ Bow Tie quilt has a lightness and whimsy to it, with a center block of applique. The bow tie block alternates with a 1930s’ green to add interest and color.

The Bow Tie was rarely used by Amish, but some rare examples of their use do exist.

The pattern dates to the 1880s and was first pub-

lished by the Ladies Arts Company in 1895. Like so many quilt patterns, it had other names: Colonial Bow Tie, Peekhole, True Lovers’ Knot, Dumbbell.

The persistent story of quilt blocks used as code for runaway slaves includes the Bow Tie. That story tells of signaling runaway slaves to dress up in fine clothes to pass in disguise if stopped.

The ultimate authority of quilt history, Barbara Brackman, states there is no evidence of quilts being used as signals, codes or maps.

This story persists, yet has no documentation in quilt history to back it up.

Tickets are $1 each or six for $5. Because of COVID-related programming interruptions, the drawing date for the raffle of the 2020 quilt is now Feb. 1 at 3 p.m., at the museum.

Fatal Antioch Township crash under investigation On January 9, 2021, at approximately 5:30 p.m., Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to Route 45 and Route 173, Antioch Township, for a traffic crash with injuries. Sheriff’s deputies arrived and located a rollover traffic crash.

Preliminary investigation shows a 1997 Chevrolet Blazer, driven by a 59-yearold man of Mundelein, just pulled out of the gas station parking lot which is on the northwest corner of the in-

tersection. The driver of the Chevrolet briefly drove westbound on Route 173 and then onto the shoulder on the north side of the roadway. The driver of the Chevrolet then attempted to make a U-turn to travel eastbound on Route 173. As the driver made the U-turn, the Chevrolet was struck by a westbound 1999 Lexus ES 300, driven by 25-year-old male of Buffalo Grove. This caused the Chevrolet to roll.

in the Chevrolet, a 57-yearold male of Mundelein, is believed to have been ejected from the Chevrolet. When sheriff’s deputies arrived, Good Samaritans were conducting CPR on the 57-yearold man. He was transported via ambulance to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, where he was later pronounced deceased.

The driver of the Chevrolet was transported via ambulance to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Lexus was uninjured.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office responded and an autopsy is being scheduled for the passenger of the Chevrolet.

Plant association chooses calamint for plant of the year As constant as the New Year’s Eve ball drop in New York City, every year the Perennial Plant Association presents its plant of the year. Its 2021 choice is calamint, a sun-loving, low-growing, bushy perennial with long-lasting blooms that benefit pollinators.

“Like a cloud of confetti, tiny white flowers, sometimes touched with pale blue, appear on calamint branches from early summer to fall,” says Martha Smith, University of Illinois Extension horticulture educator.

Since 1990, Perennial Plant Association members have voted for a standout perennial to showcase annually. These plants are always low maintenance with multiple-season interest and are suitable for a wide range of growing climates, according to the association.

Nepeta, is a member of the mint family and is an excellent companion for an herb garden, does wonderfully in containers, and is lovely cascading over low retaining walls.

“It is low maintenance, undemanding, and dependable and is the perfect companion for other summer bloomers and foliage,” Smith says.

With blooms from early summer until frost, calamint supports bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, while its aromatic foliage is deer resistant.

Native from southern Europe to Great Britain, calamint prefers full sun and will tolerate partial afternoon shade. It does best in soils with good drainage, but once established, it can be drought tolerant.

Plants grow up to 2 feet tall and 2 feet wide and work well as an edge planting.

It is a favorite in stylized meadows, matrix plantings, and other modern perennial designs. Gardeners can also

create a lovely monochromatic garden with past plants of the year, such as Anemone xhybrida ‘Honorine Jobert’ and Phlox paniculata ‘David,’ or complemented with ornamental grasses, such as switchgrass, Panicum virgatum ‘Northwind,’, or little bluestem, Schyzacharium scoparium.

Gardeners may have noticed that the scientific name of calamint refers to a sub-species, (subsp.), instead of a plant variety, (var.). The difference is a matter of taxonomic semantics. The two terms are interchangeable, according to the International Association for Plant Taxonomy. Much like the metric vs. imperial systems of measurement, European plant taxonomists use subspecies, while North American taxonomists prefer variety.

Calamint is easily started from seed. It may spread in the garden by rhizomes, or self-seeding to form an interesting ground cover. Stems touching the ground may root at the nodes.

Shear or cut back plants after flowering to tidy the planting, to remove unsightly foliage, or to prevent any unwanted selfseeding.

Lake County holiday traffic campaign results announced Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 10 people for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs during the winter holiday traffic enforcement campaign.

Additionally, 13 driving with a suspended/ revoked driver’s license, 38 speeding, and 62 seatbelt citations were issued.

Altmayer, 28, McHenry, was cited for delivery/manufacture cannabis over 30 gm, and cannabis control act – over 100 gms not more than 500 gms; Josue E. Delgado, 32, was cited for speeding 26-34 mph over the limit;

Adam D. Pringle, 30, McHenry, was cited for 4 counts of aggravated battery of a peace officer, and resisting a police officer; Michelle E. Samolis, 35, Spring Grove, was cited for resisting a peace officer/corr emp, domestic battery/bodily harm, and domestic battery/physical contact.
