The McHenry County Coroner ’s Office has earned accreditation from the International Association of Coroners and Medical Examiners – a high honor that only three Illinois counties and 37 nationwide have achieved.
IACME subjected the Coroner ’s Office to a thorough review of 288 standards on administrative, forensic and investigative matters, as well as an onsite inspection of its facility. To achieve accreditation, coroners’ offices are required o meet all mandatory standards and 90% of non-required standards. The Coroner’s Office exceeded requirements by meeting all mandatory standards and 99% of nonrequired standards.
“Modernizing the Coroner ’s Office has been a top priority for me since before I was even elected,” said McHenry county Coroner Dr. Michael Rein. “My office is often called to the most heart-wrenching of cases, and I am proud that we can better serve grieving families during their darkest hours and support justice for the entire community.”
The Coroner ’s Office won an $113,175 grand from the U.S. Department of Justice to pay for needed improvements and upgrades to achieve accreditation such as new software, security enhancements for the facility, and modernized equipment.
The McHenry County Medical Reserve Corps (MCMRC) is a local network of volunteers working to improve the health and safety of McHenry County. September 2023 marks the group’s 20th year of dedication and service to McHenry County.
Established in September 2003 in response to the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the MCMRC has grown into a vital force in disaster response, health promotion, and community support. The unit has expanded its mission to include national-level disaster response, community support, and health promotion. With a history of remarkable dedication, the MCMRC continues to make a positive impact on the health and well-being of our community.
Throughout its history, the MCMRC has played a
Dinosaurs will visit the Bess Bower Dunn Museum in Li bertyville with the opening of a special exhibition, “Dinosaurs: Fossils Exposed.” The exhibit runs from October 7 through January 15, 2024 at the nationally accredited Museum, operated by the Lake County Forest Preserves
The new exhibition explores the bones and fossils belonging to the giant creatures that once roamed the earth. Visitors can view and even touch six full dinosaur skeletal molds including a Triceratops, Tyrannosaurus rex and Velociraptor.
There are additional molds of skulls, arms, legs, eggs, footprints and a 6-foot1-inch Apatosaurus femur.
“People’s imaginations work overtime when it comes to developing their understanding of dinosaurs,” said Director of Education Nan Buckardt. “They include some of the largest animals ever to roam the earth and some that were just chicken sized. This exhibit will explore dinosaurs from full skeleton replicas to fossilized eggs.”
“Dinosaurs: Fossils Exposed” was conceptualized by the Arkansas Discovery Network, a unique six-mu-
seum partnership, of which the Dunn Museum is a member. The Preservation Foundation, the charitable partner of the Lake County Forest Preserves, provided support for the exhibition.
“Often, with dinosaur exhibits, the crucial background information is overshadowed by the shear majesty of these massive animals,” said Kathleen Lawson, Arkansas Discovery Network director. “But ‘Dinosaurs: Fossils Exposed’ will educate and excite visitors while dispelling common misconceptions and engage people of all ages.”
The exhibit will feature Tully monster fossils from the Dunn Museum collection. Central Illinois is the only place in the world where the fossils have been found. “This creature has baffled scientists since it was first discovered in the late 1950s. Even today, there is no agreement if it even has any living relatives,” Buckardt said.
“One of the things I’m most looking forward to is seeing the wonder and joy on the faces of our visitors as they move through the exhibition,” Buckardt said. Museum hours and admission prices are listed at DunnMuseum.org
pivotal role in various community initiatives, including Operation Dropbox, which involves gifting store-bought items to support Veterans Path to Hope. The unit has also been instrumental in ensuring the safety and well-being of our residents. They have also volunteered at various local non-profit organizations. Amongst the network’s other community involvements are emergency response exercises, trainings, vaccine clinics, phone banks, contact tracing, diabetes classes and initiatives, substance use education, recycling events, rabies and microchipping events, wellness screenings, CPR instruction, and food pantry classes.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the MCMRC assisted in the distribution of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and actively participating in vaccination
efforts. Their contribution has been instrumental in protecting the community against the virus. Between 2010 and 2022, the MCMRC has volunteered 17,594 hours, which is estimated to have saved the county over $500,000.
The national Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) network comprises more than 300,000 volunteers in roughly 800 community-based units located throughout the United States and its territories. MRC units organize and utilize local volunteers who want to donate their time and expertise to prepare for and respond to emergencies and to support ongoing preparedness initiatives. MRC volunteers include medical and public health professionals as well as other community members without healthcare backgrounds who want to improve the health and safe-
ty of their communities. The need for the MRC became apparent after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, when medical and public health professionals, eager to volunteer in support of emergency relief activities, found that there was no organized approach to channel their efforts. As a result, the MRC was established to provide a way to recruit, train, and activate medical and public health professionals and other volunteers to respond to community health needs during disasters and other public health emergencies.

Tours are available at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, and provide visitors a chance to peel back the curtain on how this amazing 75-acre complex of everything from muscle cars to music machines, mammoths and more came to be.
“Hear the unknown stories, get behind-the-scenes looks and see over 10,000 mechanical marvels with a completely new perspective,” said Jim Wojdyla, marketing director at the museum.
The tours include the main museum showrooms; the Titanic Museum and Jurassic Gardens are not included.
Leading the tours will be Volo Museum employees Seamus Pearcy and Jordan Burg,
both of whom have been taking deep dives into the museum’s fascinating background.
“I love the history behind everything here,” Pearcy said.
“I love all of the old classics.
The opportunity to tell some of the stories behind the collection is pretty exciting.”
Burg, who has a bachelor’s degree in history, said she anticipates that visitor questions
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office Special Investigations Group (SIG), a High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) funded task force, concluded an investigation which led to the arrest of a Beach Park man who was selling crack cocaine.
Members of SIG conducted an investigation after receiving information Damonne L. Hunt, 33, of the 39000 block of North Sheridan Road, Beach Park, was selling crack cocaine out of a motel room in the same block.
On Sept. 27, members of SIG conducted a search warrant and located over 20 grams of crack cocaine, packaged for delivery and a firearm with the serial number scratched off.
SIG detectives arrested Hunt and reviewed the information with the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office, who approved the following charges:
– Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance with the Intent to Deliver (Class X Felony)
– Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance (Class 1 Felony)
– Aggravated Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Felon (Class 3 Felony)
– Unlawful Possession of a
Firearm with a Defaced Serial Number (Class 3 Felony).
“We have a message to those who think they can traffic guns or drugs in Lake County: Our Special Investigations Group and sheriff’s deputies will do everything they can to investigate you and hold you accountable for your actions,” Sheriff John D. Idleburg said. “I am proud of the work that went into this investigation and thankful to all of the law enforcement involved.”
Hunt remains held in the Lake County Jail and was scheduled to appear in ‘First Appearance Court’ Sept. 28.

Gerzin Ramirez-Perez, 33, of the 700 block of North Park Road, Round Lake, has been charged in connection with last week’s hostage situation in Round Lake.
Members of the Round Lake Police Department reviewed the circumstances of the incident with the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office. After reviewing the details, the following charges were approved:
– Aggravated Unlawful Restraint (Class 3 Felony)
– Two Counts of Domestic Battery (Class A Misdemeanors)
On September 22, 2023, an arrest warrant was drafted and a Lake County Judge approved and signed the warrant.
Ramirez-Perez was discharged from an area hospital on September 25, 2023. Upon his discharge, he was arrested and transported to the Lake County Jail, where he remains pending ‘First Appearance Court’ this morning.
All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
In a Sept. 20, press release, the department shared the following information.
On September 19, 2023, at approximately 6:35 p.m., Round Lake Police Officers were dispatched to a residence in the 700 block of North Park Road, Round Lake, for an unknown problem. A 911 caller reported police were needed but hung up before emergency telecommunicators could ask additional questions. Officers arrived and located a woman outside of the home. The woman outside of the home told officers there was a woman in the basement of the home, who needed help.
Round Lake Police Officers arrived at the residence and knocked on the door. The homeowner answered the door and allowed officers inside. The homeowner told officers there is a man (later identified as a 33-year-old) and woman (later identified as a 30-year-old) who live in a downstairs basement apartment of the home.
Round Lake Police Officers approached a basement door and could hear what sounded like people in the basement. The police of-
ficers attempted to speak to the couple through the door, in an attempt to determine the problem.
Around the same time, a police officer on the outside of the home looked through a basement window and saw the man holding a knife to the woman’s neck. Round Lake Police Officers attempted to deescalate the situation, however, the man continued holding the knife to the woman and refused to put the knife down or let the victim go.
Due to the nature of the situation, the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System (NIPAS), a regional SWAT team, was requested to the scene. Members of NIPAS arrived and attempted de-escalation techniques and negotiations, to rescue the hostage and peacefully resolve the situation. As the victim and man were Spanish speaking, Spanish linguists were on-scene to lead the communication efforts. During their efforts, the man grew increasingly agitated and refused to drop the knife or follow any of the instructions requested by NIPAS, placing the victim at substantial risk of being killed or seriously injured. Two members of NIPAS discharged their firearms, striking the man.
Members of NIPAS were able to rescue the victim from the man’s grip, following the shooting. Police officers provided aid to the man, until nearby paramedics arrived. The man was transported to an area hospital with critical injuries, but is expected to survive. The victim sustained minor injuries during the attack and was evaluated by paramedics, but declined transport to the hospital.
The two officers involved in the shooting were transported to area hospitals for evaluation, per protocol.
The initial woman police encountered outside of the home was an acquaintance of the victim, who the victim attempted to contact while being attacked by the man.
In addition to following these safety tips, you should devise a fire escape plan with two exits out of every room and practice it often with your family. You should also arrange for everyone to take a fire safety course. That way, in the event that a fire happens, your family will know how to react.
