Hanly Mill in McHenry acknowledged for its historical importance to the community
Sandra Landen Machaj CONTRIBUTOR
On Thursday, September 29 at 3:30 pm, the City of McHenry officially recog nized the importance of the historic Hanly Mill on Crys tal Lake Road in McHenry as part of the community’s his tory.
As members of the Al thoff family, who currently own the property, gathered with City officials and mem bers of the McHenry Land mark Commission, and the McHenry Area Historical So ciety, Victor Santi, Alderman, presented the plaque to the Althoff family to be attached to the original structure of the Hanly Mill. Mills were important in the development of the small farm communities which were built in the area. Saw mills were often the first to be built to provide wood to build barns and homes, often in that order. After the saw mills were built, grist mills appeared to provide a way for the farmers to turn their grain crops into flour so it could be used as food, McHenry like many com munities that had a water source which was needed to run the mills, had a sawmill built in the community in the early 1800s, followed by a gristmill built by Herman Owen and his brothers in
1851.
“The third mill to be built in McHenry was built by Alexander Hamilton Han ly and his sons in 1869 and completed in 1870. This mill was known as the McHenry Brick Mill and Champion Brick Yard,” said Pam Kel logg, who has studied the history of the Hanly family for years and is a member of the McHenry Landmark Commission. “The bricks they made were unique yel low bricks from clay from the clay pit on Hanly’s farm. He built his home on Crystal Lake Road and Lillian Street out of these unique yellow bricks just as he had the mill.”
The mill, according to an early article in the McHenry Plaindealer, the local news paper of the community, at tracted farmers from both McHenry and Lake Counties. They brought their harvests to the Hanly Grist Mill to be processed.
Alexander Hamilton Han ly was a businessman and a farmer. Hanly married Susan Sherman and together they had 5 children, a girl, Emma, who died in infancy, and 4 sons, Samuel, George, John, and Daniel. Susan Sherman Hanly had been a teacher in her early life so it was not surprising that her sons were well educated.
Over the years Hanly was the owner of one of the largest farms in the northern Illinois area. With his sons, he ran his farm. Like most of the farms in the McHenry County area, he produced milk which was shipped to Chicago by train. The Hanly Farms were also known for raising and selling livestock including Morgan Horses.
In these days before electric ity, food was kept cold by us ing ice. Hanly, like many oth ers in the area ran an ice busi ness, where he would harvest ice from the frozen rivers and ponds for refrigeration. Pick le and vinegar factories were common in the area and the McHenry Pickle Works Com pany was another business Hanly was involved in.
Community service was part of Hanly’s life. He served as a school director for McHenry. He continued his community service as a member of the Executive Committee of the McHenry County Agricultural Society, and as a member of the Old Settler’s Club.
Alexander Hamilton Hanly and his wife Susan were among the founding members of the Universalist Church in town. He and his wife remained active mem bers in the church.

Hanly passed away in 1891, but his sons contin ued the family businesses for many years. They sold the mill to John Spencer in the early 1900s. It was later owned by William Meath, then Chuck Miller and finally by J.L. Althoff.
Althoff had the building renovated in 1982 but kept it as original as possible while updating it to current building codes. This mill is the only one of the three mills that made Mc Henry their home that is still standing.
While the Mill has sur vived, unfortunately the yel low brick Italianate home built by Hanly just up the
street, succumbed to a fire in 1975. The last of the Hanly descendants passed away in 1993.
The Hanly Mill is the only reminder that is left of the work of Alexander Hamilton Hanly, who was born in New York and came to McHen ry as a 20 year old. He ar rived without any money but through his strong work ethic was able to accomplish much and have a very successful life.
Getting a building to be recognized by the city as an important part of the commu nity’s history is not a fast or easy job. The Landmark Com mission considered 14 points
to be met that make this build ing an important part of the city’s history. After research ing the building and its histor ical usage, it was realized that the Hanly Mill was deserving of landmark status and they submitted it to the City Coun cil for consideration, It is the City Council which approves or disapproves the building for historic status. Fortunately, the City Council approved giving the historic Hanly Mill, Landmark Status.
The city was fortunate to have had Alexander Hamil ton Hanly build his mill in McHenry and are grateful to the Althoff family for pre serving it.

‘Sensory Sunday’ this weekend at Jurassic Gardens
Volo Museum’s animatronic dinosaurs to go still, silent from 10 a.m. to noon
Cynthia Wolf CONTRIBUTOR
For those with sensory processing disorders, a walk through the writhing and roaring animatronic dinosaurs at Jurassic Gardens in Volo might be downright unnerving.
Not so, though, from 10 a.m. to noon on Sunday, Oct. 23, when the leadership at the Volo Museum and Jurassic Gardens have scheduled the first of what may become a recurring Sensory Sunday event. Between those hours on Oct. 23, anyone visiting the indoor park can enjoy the life-like and lifesized dinosaurs while the creatures are still and silent.
Volo Museum Director Brian Grams said officials there long have coordinated with organizations like the Northern Illinois Special Recreation Association, Lambs Farm, Pioneer Center for Human Services and others to host groups and events. Now that Jurassic Gardens has been open for more than a year, requests for a less stimulating version of the dino park had begun to trickle in, particularly from parents of children on the autism spectrum.
Jen Steude, recently named manager of Jurassic Gardens, wasted no time in organizing Sensory Sunday, Grams added. “Jen is looking to add more interaction and more flexibility for different groups,”
Grams said. “We want everyone to be able to enjoy our amazing and educational display.”
Steude said she herself has suffered from a non-spectrum-related sensory processing disorder. As a child, many family activities that were fun for her peers were unbearable for her. “I had to be taken out of movie theaters, and I couldn’t attend fireworks,” she said. “I’m sure the kids of today who’re similarly affected also feel like they’re missing out. This is a great opportunity for them to explore our park, to touch the dinosaurs and feel the different textures if they choose. I think it’s going to be really nice.”
Sensory bottles and fossil-dig bins will be added to the lab area at the rear of the park, as well.
“We hope to welcome a lot of children and young adults who’d like to see the dinosaurs, but without the potentially startling noise and motion,” Steude said. “If this goes well, we’ll schedule more Sensory Sundays in the future.”
The Volo Museum and Jurassic Gardens are located at 27582 Volo Village Road, Volo. The cost to visit Jurassic Gardens is $15.95 for ages 5 and up. For other details, including museum and combo pass pricing, visit volofun.com, find Volo Museum on social, or call 815-385-3644.
dinosaurs of Jurassic Gardens in Volo will go still and silent from 10 a.m. to noon Sunday, Oct. 23, so that people with sensory processing disorders can enjoy the indoor park. Mining for fossils is among activities children can explore at Jurassic Gardens. For more information visit volofun.com.
